order right now. we can see the smoke from this fire. thank you for joining us here during. >> o'clock today, i'm justine waltman. we have been closely following the conditions in southern california today as these high winds are creating a very dangerous scenario in this firefight. we'll go right now to our newsroom. a kron four's terisa stasio is following the situation in los angeles. theresa, what's the latest in a scary situation for so many people? the fire broke out at 10, 30 this morning. >> and residents in the pacific palisades area are being told to leave their homes immediately. you gotta see this video. this is video of the fire just into our newsroom. the fire has exploded into more than 200 acres. there is 0% contained. if you are familiar with the area, it is happening in the highlands community about 10 miles from malibu, the entire community down to the pacific ocean has been told to evacuate more than 100 firefighters and strike teams are battling the blaze right now. residents on social media have been posting how they are

fleeing for their lives, grabbing their pets and racing off. fire officials are warning residents throughout southern california to be ready to take off for fear that those santa ana winds can ignite another fire and for some to evacuate. i just spoke with the cal fire battalion chief about why fighting santa ana winds are so difficult. an alarming for crews. >> strong winds are very challenging. they they control the our hose and then the water coming out of her house. and when so powerful that we try to direct that hose directly out of the fire. that wind is pushing that that that water from the the opposite direction. and just as if we would a garden hose on a windy day, right, is it's not going straight anymore. it's not directly strain. so we have about that. and also our aviation fleet is a very important to us on large fires and highly populated areas. they could be ground any moment because of smoke and high winds. so if we lose our aviation know as we have a ground forces left, there's a

lot of resources coming into southern california from northern california as cal fire's mobilizing equipment from northern california southern california has been some equipment in place as of yesterday, but now there's probably more quickly moving downtown as well. >> as of right now, thousands have been ordered to evacuate pacific palisades. that's home to about 24,000. people. the fire is spreading rapidly threatening homes and lives. wind gusts of up to 100 miles an hour whipping through the area. these are some of the strongest winds and more than a decade. i'll have much more coming up on kron. 4 news at 3 and online. justine. >> theresa, thank you. we do have team coverage of this fire will go now to our meteorologist. kyla grogan has been watching. the winds sure have. it is heartbreaking to see this. they are santa ana winds. you can see on this map where the purple is. that's where gusts are potentially 60, 70 miles per hour. and that does include the area down in and around where the fires are. as we zoom in here, you can kind of see where los angeles right now gusting at 37 miles per hour or so. this

is what happens with offshore wind, unfortunately. and that is why southern california under this red flag warning. and as we zoom in show you kind of exactly where this is. so if you know where malibu is, it's south of malibu, north of santa monica. that's where this fire has broken out. absolutely beautiful, beautiful area palisades as i'm watching this at its hard to believe that that's happening there. but nonetheless, they are under this red flag warning right now. so let's talk about temperatures and the fact that they are also warned that has everything to do with that offshore wind. it's the same thing that's driving. so the temperatures right now here in the north bay and and up to 70 degrees, you can see there up to 72 in los angeles. so bringing it back to the bay area here. you can see that we, too, have offshore wind. now, the difference is that we have just gotten a lot of rain and i was looking and los angeles downtown. if you look as an example, they've had their 6th driest october through december on record. they've been measuring rain and hundreds of an inch. whereas we've been looking at things in, you know, 10 inches

in downtown san francisco. so here's the current wind here. you can see we are also gusty does mean that we need to be careful to, but certainly we're catching a break right now compared to what they're dealing with in southern california. all right. we'll be watching the story throughout the afternoon here. and now. >> to the ongoing story in washington, d.c., as president jimmy carter is now lying in state there at the u.s. capitol. members of congress are honoring the 39th president in the rotunda this afternoon. that's his casket there with the american flag over it. jimmy carter, the 39th president of the united states, a winner of the 2002 nobel peace prize died on december 29th at his home in plains, georgia. he was surrounded by his family and he was 100 years old. the longest lived president in u.s. history. we're watching these services here live. president carter will lie in state in the capital until thursday when his state funeral will take place at the washington national cathedral will have much more on his funeral and those who are

paying their respects to him in a live report coming up at 2.15. new today. the woman kidnapped and raped in a notorious case out of allay and 2015 is now speaking out following some news that her attacker is facing new charges. kron charles clifford is live for us now in seaside with these new details. well, good afternoon. yeah, denise huskins and aaron quinn who story was documented in a netflix series called american nightmare. >> are reacting to news that their attacker, matthew mueller, is facing additional charges. 47 year-old matthew mueller, who is serving a 40 year prison sentence for kidnapping and denise huskins in 2015 has been accused of committing a series of home invasions across santa clara county during 2009. he's also been charged in a 2015 kidnapping case in contra costa county. and on tuesday, the el dorado county district attorney announced that mueller is also believed to have kidnapped and sexually assaulted a victim as far back

>> on tuesday afternoon, denise huskins quinn and her husband, aaron, spoke to the media about the recent developments in these cases. we had all the markers of a serial predator. >> and it's unfortunate that it's taken this long to be able to really give some better clarity and hopefully some sense of peace to these other victims. the new charges come after mueller allegedly confessed to the crimes in letters he sent from prison. seaside police chief nick bohr just had initiated the written correspondence with mueller that led to these alleged confessions. >> i just spoke to him as a human. there was no training or skill or trickery. it was just often take who i am reaching out. >> i really believe that this is just the tip of the iceberg. denise and aaron say they believe there are probably more unsolved cases out there and they are encouraging all victims of assault to come forward. so if

you're in that situation just know. we should always trust yourself, always believe in yourself. matthew mueller is currently being held in a santa clara county jail. once the new cases against him are resolved, he will be transferred to a federal prison in arizona. all right, back live now, denise huskins also revealed today that she has spoken to one of the victims of these newly alleged crimes hurun. aaron also said today that they're considering trying to speak to matthew mueller in person to try to convince him to real further information. but for now in seaside, charles, clifford kron, 4 news. charles, thank you. we've learned now that 2 people have been detained connection to a possible stabbing at the hayward bart station. this happened just before 10 o'clock this morning. >> prompting police to temporarily close that station. barr telling us here at kron 4 that this happened at the ground level, not on the elevated tracks or on a train. bart says this is still an active investigation. any

act? the city manager announcing the new acting police chief as the current interim chief is now set to retire. kron 4 said to call spoke to them today. and reports now on the shakeup. >> today i'm pleased to announce that i've appointed captain jody hill as the acting chief of police for the antioch police department. familiar role for captain jovi hill who served as acting antioch police chief from august 2023. through last february, following the retirement. >> the former chief doctor steven forward, antioch city manager, bessie scott publicizing the appointment effective this friday during a news conference at police headquarters tuesday. i am confident that she feel will continue the work of lowering crime. >> engaging our community and helping us seamlessly transition to a permanent police chief. a process scott says could take up to 6 months while the police department works to repair its standing in the community tarnished in the wake of federal state and

county investigations into police corruption. i believe that we've seen the department. >> stabilize interim chief brian addington stein leading the police department culminates with his re retirement following a 10 and a half month stint at the helm. it ends as the city and police department reached an agreement with the u.s. department of justice that includes detailed reforms for the police agency and up to 5 years of monitoring by an independent law enforcement consultant approved by the doj. crime has undoubtedly been a challenge, significant challenge for us here. but i think there's also signs of promise. addington says staffing continues to improve with 80 sworn officers now on duty and is hopeful all 115 authorize sworn positions will be filled within a year hiring a new chief coupled with the recent agreement. >> between the city and police department and the u.s. department of justice. signals a new beginning for any on as we work towards finding a permanent chief. i will continue working with ms scott

city staff and all department heads to ensure a safer and stronger antioch. the first public forum on hiring the next police chief is scheduled for next week. >> in antioch, philippe djegal, all kron. 4 news. >> the san francisco police department is no longer under state oversight. the 8 year long supervision from the california department of justice began in 2018 when it found that sfpd had outdated use-of-force policies and lacked accountability. according to today's report, the police department implemented 263 of 272 reforms. the remaining 9 are in progress. the end of this oversight com says daniel lurie is set to take over san francisco's mayor tomorrow. and the city is announcing today a 20 year low in major crimes. and according to the city's reported 2024, property crime was down. 31 1% from 2023 while violent crime went down, 14%. homicides reached a

60 year low with only 35 murders, car break-ins down. 54 1% coming in at just under 10,000 cars. that's the first time in about 15 years. we've seen that number. the city says it was able to reach these numbers by using new tools, including the addition of drones, drug market interventions and strengthening partnerships with different law enforcement agencies. and coming up today at 3.30, mayor london breed will join us during her last day in office to talk more about this crime trend and reflecting on her time as the mayor of san francisco. if that's tomorrow, daniel lurie will be sworn in as the new mayor of the city will have special coverage of his inauguration beginning at 11 tomorrow morning. still ahead here to >> this fire that has prompted evacuations southern california. also a rough start to the year for one east bay city. alameda already hit with multiple break-ins and robberies hear from small

and rosalynn are again together. >> now carter will lie in state for tonight and for 24 hours straight starting tomorrow morning for the public to pay respects. reporting live in washington. basil, john. >> basil, how long will president carter's casket be there in d c? well, it will be here until thursday. that's until after. >> the service that will be held at the national cathedral and then he'll be sent back to atlanta. body will be buried. basil, john, thank you so much for that live report. >> we're taking a live look outside now here across the golden gate bridge. got to see some sun here in the bay area today. meteorologist kyla grogan here now with. >> details on what's happened. yeah. so you know, all of that fire that's happening on southern california. that is bad side of offshore winds, kind of the upside of offshore wind is that we have gotten a lot of rain. so it's not as dangerous for us. so we are experiencing this some blue skies and warm temperatures

and just some really nice conditions. and frankly, it's not just today that we're going to see these warm conditions. you can see as they roll through the rest of the week. we really don't cool it down again until we get to saturday. and even then it's just cooling it down to a couple of degrees above average. but today, so far proving to be quite a banner day as this high pressure takes hold here. you can see a few high clouds that are spilling over, making it into the bay area. but as we zoom out here, pretty pronounced high-pressure sitting right offshore. you see that ridge, that dome that is allowing us to warm up. and then of course, you also see the low pressure there over southern california that wind gradient between the 2 of them. it's being caught between that caught clockwise circulation in the counter clockwise circulation kind of squeezes together and creates the wind grady. and that's when we get that offshore wind rolling. and that's exactly what's happening. as far as the warmth is concerned, high pressure will stay in control here. now that low will start to move away as we get into tomorrow. and that will start to loosen the wind, grady and things will get better on that front. having said that, the high pressure is not going anywhere. you can see it rolls right through the weekend

here. so that is why we're still going to see these above average temperatures continue. meanwhile, out of the coast, we are still under that hazard statement for the coastal want to make sure we're looking out for seager ways. obviously very calm here at half. moon bay and the temperatures have just been going up up up right now. they are at 66 degrees. definitely breezy out there. you can see that offshore wind in the direction of the northeast about 15 miles per hour. take a look at these temperatures. 70 degrees right now in hayward and oakland, where it's 70 in santa rosa. we're awfully close to it in san jose at 69, even san francisco at 66 degrees. if you want to take the dog for a walk, you're looking at walnut creek here. it's going to be absolutely lovely afternoon to do that. all right. 7 day forecast really quickly to show you that warmth kind of rolls with us right through the week. we stay dry. lots of sunshine in the forecast ahead. and now to the east bay where alameda is dealing with a series of break-ins and robberies. kron four's. lindsey ford has more. >> growing. if everywhere.

front door of izzy'snalameda cannabis store was vandalized but nothing stolen. we are going to hold those who have >> committed crimes in our city accountable. and i'm looking forward to some follow-up on the story. >> and let me to police chief joshi says these recent crimes are suspected to be linked. we have some leads. we have. >> we're putting a case together and i'm confident that there will be resolution to the these events. >> alameda police tell me that they are looking at transit patterns to solve these specific crimes and additionally through license plate reader technology at the exit and entry ways into the city. additionally, business owners are also helping to solve these cases by sharing their security footage in alameda, lindsey ford kron. 4 news. >> the fremont police department is crediting prop 36 for some recent arrests.

police say they arrested 18 people in december during a two-day operation where officers watch to businesses. the thieves usually steal from. they say 9 of them were credited to prop 36 which allows for a felony arrest. if the suspect had 2 previous theft related convictions. freeman police say they will continue to patrol the streets in order to make the community safer. brentwood police say 2 suspected golf car thief garff golf cart. the ifs did not get verp far over the weekend when a police operated drone quickly tracked them down. officers were called out to a neighborhood on somerset drive and an officer quickly deployed a drone 12 search the area to find the suspects and they were found and then arrested and the golf carts were recovered. >> still ahead with the latest information on this fire in southern california and the thousands of people that have forced to evacuate said the palisades. and after the break, we'll hear more about

>> in sports, there are some reports that the forty-niners have fired special-teams coordinator, brian schneider. the team has not officially announced this yet, but it is expected to come out today at some point schneider and his 3rd season with the niners after his special teams unit finished near the bottom of the league. the forty-niners finished with a record of 6.11. the season. some major developments on california's high-speed rail project. construction of tracks for this project is going to begin this year in kern county.

governor gavin newsom says the tracks will be laid down in the spring. the project was approved by voters in 2008. it has taken 16 years to gr.en light. the construction with the cost nearly 100 billion dollars more than anticipated newsom address this negativity around the project saying that he has a plan to keep the project funded responsibly, but not long ago. >> leaders in the state of california talking about this project said why the are we doing it in the central valley? there's just tumble weeds. and in the central valley. well, t ll that to the folks in merced said fresno and bakersfield calif to the folks that are out here every single day living their lives out loud in the manufacturing warehousing logistics. >> so officials are saying that passengers will be able to ride the train by 20 32. bart needs replace decades of old tracks between walnut creek and concord to make sure that it has reliable service

breaking news. this wildfire that has forced people from their homes and the pacific palisades. that's in southern california. this is a live picture of the area right now. we can see flames currently burning. >> this is an area that's under an evacuation order right now. we've been following the conditions very closely in southern california today because the high winds have been whipping that area. and we've getting an update now that this fire has already burned more than 700 acres. we'll go right now to our newsroom. a kron four's terisa stasio is following the situation and she has the latest for us now. what a frightening kind of situation for so many people. this fire is moving incredibly fast. >> more than 24,000 residents live in the pacific palisades area. they areas close to the santa monica pier for reference everyone. all of those residents being told to

leave immediately. you can see right here in this video into our news room, how some residents are fighting to save their homes. the fire broke out around 10, 30 this morning. wind gusts are racing through the canyons, making matters even worse. some gusts clocking in at 100 miles an hour. dark ominous plumes of smoke are now coloring the skies in the area. traffic is backing up on a palisades drive as residents continue to flee their homes. a portion of the pacific coast highway is closed. several schools have been forced to relocate. here is a spokesperson with the los angeles fire department. >> okay. we're at the incident command post at lafd fire station. 23 in the pacific palisades for the pacific palisades as you can see, there's a significant loom up behind us. we're going to show you on the map where the fire is, where it's going and what are back? concerns are. >> this is the pacific palisades highlands community.

the fire is burning in a westward direction through here. so we want evacuation warning for all of this area that is going to be from topanga canyon here to the and from rustic canyon to the west. it's all going to be area of an evacuation warning and be prepared for evacuation orders to come through. and the command post is going to be relocated down to will. rogers fire is now 200 acres rapidly spreading due to the significant winds that we have. >> just to give you a perspective of how fast the fire's going, we now know that, of course, it's 722 acres in that interview with the los angeles firefighter that just happened a short time ago. now, a couple of other things. the fire is moving incredibly fast. as i mentioned, southern california edison in the area, the region's utility company is

preparing to cut power to as many as half a million customers in the southern half of the state in hopes of staving off a igniting another blaze. this is some imaging from the satellite. you can see just how quick fast moving the fire is. residents are also being told justine that they need to have those go bags packed and it's not a matter of when it's a matter you know, whether you're going minutes, 20 minutes at center and so forth. so they're telling everyone to be prepared. there's also a risk of the san fernando valley as well as san gabriel valley. as the winds are predicted to go into those areas as well. we're keeping a close eye on all of this are going to have more updates coming up on kron. 4 news at 3 o'clock and always on kron 4 dot com. justine and lots of new video. also coming on to our newsroom, showing us the smoke and the flames. we have team coverage of this fire. >> well, now to our

meteorologist. >> with the latest on the wind conditions fortunately they are not going to get better their way to get you potentially worse as we go throughout the afternoon and evening. you can see where that area in purple really showing where some of those higher gusts are. that could be upwards of 60, 70, even 80 miles per hour, even higher in some spots. now here in the bay area, we are under a wind advisory. this does go throughout the day today into tomorrow. but as we zoom out, you can see a good portion of california under wind advisories. but southern california, the only area that is under that red flag warning and for good reason, obviously we see the fire. that's breaking out there now that red flag warning indicating what's going on there. if you kind of look underneath the fact that with 8 we have wind and they have wind. >> here's the difference. downtown san francisco's got over 10 inches of rain since october. first through today, downtown los angeles for comparison, which should have about 4 and a half inches of rain in that same time frame has gotten 16, one hundredths of an inch. that is all they've got. and so if you consider how dry we were at the end of the summer and then

you think about that, if we've been dry this whole time, just how much of brittle dry brush there would be out there. that's what's happening with them. so you can see this wildfire danger to kind havering around southern california over the next 24 to 36 hours. and then we should start to see things get a little bit better. bring it back to the bay here. you certainly see that we, too have offshore wind as you take a look at the flag there you see the direction that that wind is blowing. but the fact that we are so soggy in places around the bay area because of all the rain that we've had, that makes the difference. but just to show you some of this wind right now, you know, we're gusting to about 20 miles per hour in oakland, about 18 in fairfield. and we will continue to do this as we go throughout the night tonight. i'll be back in a little bit. we'll talk about our 7 day forecast. >> all right. i love the san mateo county sheriff's office has arrested a man for allegedly attempting a burglary outside of the slac national accelerator laboratory on sunday night, deputies were called out to a report of a suspicious person on the property that had bolt cutters. so they checked on the property and spotted the

suspect as they say he started kunning away towards to 80 with the help from the sheriff's office k 9, the suspect was found hiding and then taken into custody. a woman has been charged with attempted murder in connection to a san francisco shooting last week that injured 2 people. one of them is a social worker who's now in critical condition. kron 4 sarah stinson has the story. >> i spoke with daniel drake's mom on the phone as her daughter fights for her life to me says she's calling on her daughter's employer to have more security on site for social workers. i also spoke with a woman who lives at the building where this shooting happened. she couldn't believe what unfolded. >> oh, my god. while shot by the same person. >> christie abrams in shock learning the details of a shooting that happened inside her building at mercy housing that injured 2 people. it happened last thursday morning around 10 at the supportive housing building on bryant

street across from the hall of justice. the complex is home to people who are formally unsheltered, according to the san francisco district attorney's office. 49 year-old monique davis punch someone multiple times inside the elevator. prosecutors say davis then grabbed a pistol from her room when down to the lobby and opened fire. a social worker was shot in the face. another person was shot in the arm. police arrested davis about a mile away mercy housing partners with couple community service is the executive director, beth stokes released a statement saying in part our thoughts and prayers go out to the ecs and mercy staff who were grievously injured by this senseless act of violence. ecs will do everything in our power to support the victims. their families, our staff and our residents. as we navigate these challenging circumstances. stokes also says their top priority is the safety and well-being of residents and staff abram says mercy housing put out a notice

to residents. center. >> paper around about it. but all other day was a referred to it as the incident without seeing water was. i didn't know where it happened. you know, i haven't felt unsafe here. >> but abrams says this shooting has rattled others. there's people here saying they're going leave the building. >> davis was in court monday afternoon facing several charges. the district attorneys office says she committed this crime while out on bail for another. so the da moved to have her behind bars pending trial due to the public safety risk she poses. i'm sarah stihson reporting back to you. >> just days after a costly break-in, uc berkeley satellite campus in richmond was burglarized again on sunday. you see police were alerted to reports of a break-in at 4 buildings. the suspects allegedly stole tools valued around $2000. anyone with information should call you see police. >> and staying in the east.

>> we're not quite as gusty as that down here. take a look at the trees there by quite how are you can see them moving around indicating that we've got some wind out there about 12 miles per hour in san francisco, but we're up to 20 in oakland, 18 in fairfield. been kind of the hot spots today, 14 san jose and about about 15 miles per hour. but all of it coming in that north northeasterly direction indicating offshore wind. so this is where our wind advisory is. it is bay area wide. it does go until 10:00am tomorrow morning. so we still have a bit to get through with this where we could see these gusts that are upwards of 40, even 50 miles per hour. you're going to be driving the bridges. you're likely to notice this wind gusts here to show you futurecast as we go into the evening, they do not relent. they keep going not only into the evening but into the overnight hours. that's about 03:00am. you can see san francisco about 34 miles per hour head out to fairfield. we're going to up that to about 44 mile per hour gusts north bay up there, too. this is tomorrow about 2 o'clock. so that's what we're going to wrap it all up. and then we'll be back to kind of normal. also want to mention, we do still have the danger of the

coast that west-northwest swell. still an issue with us. we do have our beach hazard statement that is out that goes through 9 o'clock tonight. i'm happy to say that so far the wave heights have been too bad. but the sneaker wave risk is definitely elevated. so please be careful if you're out there. wave heights have gone up a bit. we're up to about 9 feet right now. but other than that, we're having a pretty nice day here as we take a live look, the golden gate bridge, the sunshine is that with us in the temperatures are soaring, where it's 70 degrees in hayward and oakland. we made it up to 71 in petaluma and you can see even san francisco right now. >> sitting at 66 degrees so well above average. that is the effect of that offshore wind driving in those warmer temperatures. just a few clouds out there. but as we zoom out, it's all about the high pressure that is keeping us warm sitting right there. low pressure, unfortunately is what's helping to kick off this wind that will eventually start to release the wind gradient as that low pressure moves away. but we'll still have our high pressure in control. that brings us a lot of sunshine and warm temperatures through the rest of the workweek. all right.
