>> that breaking news out of southern california tonight where powerful winds are fueling to wildfires just about 40 miles from each other and altadena and pacific palisades. the fire in altadena is being called the eaton fire. it broke out around 6.30 this evening and has since grown to more than 400 acres. but the larger of the 2, the palisades fire has now burned nearly 3,000 acres since those flames broke out around 10, 30 this morning. thank you for joining us here on kron for news at 10. i'm noelle bellow and i'm dan thorn. firefighters fear the already devastating situation is expected to get worse overnight. >> because of these very strong winds. governor gavin newsom already declaring a state of emergency and thousands of people remain under an evacuation order. >> here is a 3 d map of the evacuation zone for the palisades fire. tens of thousands of people in that area under evacuation orders and warnings tonight

stretching through topanga canyon and reaching into malibu. many homes have already burned, but the exact number remains to be seen more than 13,000 homes remain under continued threat tonight. and kron 4 sarah stinson has been monitoring this situation in southern california. >> and she's joining us live in studio now with the very latest. we actually just got some information. we learned that a female firefighter was injured. and we also know that a few burn victims have been identified. a few people walked into a restaurant, apparently. >> and was injured from being burned. now, this is video just in from a plane flying above the palisades fire. you can active how expansive this fire really is. more than 30,000 residents have been told to evacuate as the fire rips through pacific palisades i spoke with a cal fire battalion chief who says they have resources from across the bay area down there helping fight this fire, which doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon. >> it's blowing really hard

now. so it's it's going to be a really dangerous situation tonight. our firefighters have a tough fight on their hands. brent with cal fire says it's all hands on deck to fight the palisades fire with crews from all over the state down in pacific. palisades crews from sonoma lake napa, amador eldorado, butte county, nevada, yuba placer. monterey. >> santa cruz, a lot of units came down to greet preposition those wind event. >> and you can see behind me it was needed. >> the santa ana winds wreaking havoc tuesday morning sparking this fire around 10, 30, forcing thousands to evacuate to our palisades and topanga community under evacuation order. please leave this causing a mass exodus out of the area with some people having to abandon their cars to run to safety. crews had to use a bulldozer to move the cars out of the way for firefighters, their families up their their pets up there. there are people who really need help. actor stephen

gothenburg lives in the area. he jumped into action, moving cars and helping others evacuate course. you know, we've got a huge fire up there. we've got huge winds right now. it's really important for people to help each other. we still don't know the exact number of homes that have been destroyed. but video shows several swallowed by flames. theirs definitely houses it engulfed. so there's fire in a lot of multiple areas from the embers, i suppose before declaring a state of emergency. governor gavin newsom visited the fire zone and saw firsthand. >> the impact of the swirling winds and embers and the number of structures that are destroyed, not a few many structures already destroyed and the fire is only expected to continue to grow overnight. where you at right now. >> right on the beach that saw across the street from pch on the fire's been moving in this direction pretty much all day. i believe it did jump pch. and i was told to lifeguard stands, had suffered some burn damage.

>> due to high winds, cal fire has suspended their aircraft from fighting the fire up in the sky, which puts even more pressure on the ground. crews officials say they are constantly reevaluating that. meanwhile, la fires calling in all off-duty firefighters to help overnight. the situation, of course dire. i'm sarah stinson reporting back to you. >> sarah, thank you. well, the evacuation order has now been expanded to santa monica as well. the city posting on social media tonight that they are evacuating all areas north of saint dissent. and a little bit more on the eaton fire, which told you about at the top of the show. it's burning in altadena, which is just north of pasadena. this is the fire that started around 6.30 this evening about 40 miles away from the palisades fire. >> it has grown to more than 400 acres authorities there using city buses and even swat vans to try and evacuate residents as of now, there aren't any reports of people injured, but there. but news

crews there do say they have seen homes on fire. kron four's meteorologist kathy trafton. she's been watching this all day long. kathy, they have not had any significant rainfall and this wind is scary. that is correct. that had so little rainfall way in less than you'd expect by this time of year. so the atmosphere's dry. and then guess what? we've got these terrible, terrible winds. >> and also we have to pop up. it's a real issues. it's just awful lot. >> winds are cashed widespread, 50 to 80 mile per hour winds. now this is the area of the red flag warning right here. you can see it's all through ventura county, los angeles county, santa barbara county and also part of the santa barbara mountains. west ynez range. so is just widespread, but these winds are widespread. so 50 to 80 miles per hour. and then some isolated areas. 8200 mile per hour gusts in the winter strengthening overnight into

tomorrow. so overnight, especially very, very strong winds. and that is a big concern. part of the promise to poverty. the dry weather, the windy conditions in the winds brought on by high pressure over over the united states and then low pressure just off los angeles and that when gradient a pressure gradient between the 2 titans and that's what really triggers. he's very, very strong winds. so i'll talk more about some winds in our area and our forecast coming up in just a bit. kathy, thank you. back here at home, the survivor of high-profile kidnapping and rape case spoke in monterey county today. >> as officers are working to find more victims. >> we had all the markers of a serial predator. and it's unfortunate that it's taken this long to be able to really give some better clarity and hopefully some sense of peace to these other victims. >> that was denise huskins talking about matthew mueller. he is facing new charges after

allegedly confessing to several crimes in letters sent from prison. some of the alleged crimes, including kidnapping case in contra costa county back in 2015 and several home invasions across santa clara county in 2009. >> i just spoke to him as a human. there was no training or skill or trickery. it was just often take who i am reaching out. >> those letters were sent to and from that officer, a huskins, a husband said today they're considering trying to talk directly to mueller in an attempt to get him to reveal even more information. >> san mateo county responding to a claim by sheriff christina corpus that she has been discriminated against, harassed and defame last week. the embattled sheriff filed a claim against the county saying county leaders participated in what she calls an evil scheme. the county says claim is the first step towards filing 10 million dollar lawsuit against the

county. this comes amid fallout from a scathing report accusing sheriff corpus of abuses of power retaliation and ethical violations this evening, county officials released a statement reading in part the assertions in corpus is claim that she has been discriminated against, harassed and defamed and more so because she is both a woman and a lot next person are completely baseless and a distraction from the issues that give rise to the present circumstances. board of supervisors has placed an amendment on the march ballot asking voters to grant them the power to remove corpus from office. >> former congresswoman jackie spear among the 2 new women sworn in to serve on the san mateo county board of supervisors. spirit will represent district one which includes cities of burlingame, hillsborough, millbrae and san bruno. she previously represented san mateo county in the state senate and assembly before then serving as a u.s. congresswoman for 15 years. she also started her

career as board of supervisor also sworn in today, councilmember lisa goshen gauthier. they succeed supervisors. dave pine and warren slocum and their addition gives the board a female majority. >> the san francisco police department no longer under state oversight. the 8 year long supervision from the california department of justice began back in 2018 when it found sfpd had an outdated use-of-force policy and lacked accountability. according to today's report, the police department implemented more than 260 of the 272 reforms. the remaining 9 are in progress. the end of the oversight comes as daniel lurie set to take over as san francisco's next mayor. the city is announcing a 20 year low in major crimes. and happening tomorrow, san francisco is going to be welcoming its new mayor, daniel lurie, scheduled to be sworn in in the morning as the city's 46 khan forza lindsay for joins us live in san

francisco tonight. after speaking with folks about changing of the guard, lindsay. >> yes, folks who to san francisco residents about the new mayor elect daniel lurie. one is indecisive about the results and the other is excited about the new change in administration. >> i could on the ground in the >> there are a mcallister out with their son in north beach tuesday, one day before the city welcomes daniel lurie as the new mayor. and i just hope gets better, especially kuz is baby's growing up there and it's just not the san francisco used to be. her biggest concern is the city's opioid crisis and believes it needs to be resolved. sp her 4 year-old son and other children will have a bright future. a lot of jack problems and a lot of homeless people problems. and i try to call the police and asked them mike, you help the people outside. but it just seems like it's getting worse. others like stephen set of a car excited for lori's term.

i'm really excited that daniel lurie one, i think he's going to a great job. and i think just >> since he's been elected just a feels like the city has a lot more hope since being elected lurie has been demonstrating his commitment to public safety by visiting officers at police stations. i want. >> sfpd to be known as the greatest police, department in the country and we can get there and we lori thanked outgoing mayor london breed saying she's been incredibly helpful during his transition. >> he also commended her administration for decreasing vehicle break-ins by 54%. lori says he wants to continue a strong crackdown on crime in the city and he's ready to lead. >> i'm feeling very calm to be quite honest. this is something that >> i asked i'm excited about. i said this recently i had fun on the campaign and i've had last 10 weeks of the

telling stories of the people who make-up san francisco. this is our city on kron 4. and if you've missed any of the stories, you know, you can always find them on kron. 4 dot com. >> all right. there's a big weather situations happening in southern california right now. 2 major fires burning on there, wind whipped area and it looks like everything's showing up dangerously as advertised. exactly. and yet if you're here in the bay area, we do have some strong winds overnight. we do have a lot of the same ingredients except couple things. one thing is we have a much moisture atmosphere because we we have rain. we had a lot of rain and that's great news because that means our trees. our drought are not dry means we've got moisture in tender it our fuel, if you will. >> so that is great news. beautiful weather from the berkeley hills towards san francisco today was really hot. temperatures soared well above seasonal averages. so typically be mainly in the mid to upper 50's. you see there in gray. we were in the mid

60's to low 70's and santa rosa at 72 was 15 degrees warmer than you expect this time of year. even now we're still in the 60's in many areas. how much warmer than yesterday at this hour, a whopping 16 degrees warmer in santa rosa. 17 degrees. warmer in livermore. 10 degrees. warmer hayward. so you get the idea. it's a lot warmer. wind gusts are really going strengthen overnight about 02:30am in the morning. i be the very strongest gust. and in some areas, even 50 mile an hour gusts. 45 to 55, depending on where you are in very highest elevations and then by sunrise tomorrow morning, those winds start to die down and looks like not much of the wind can concerned. once we get past that high winds. oh, yeah. there's a high wind advisory in effect till tomorrow except for the santa clara valley. i've got a lot more details coming up, including your seven-day forecast. that's coming up in weather. alright county, thanks a lot. some long lines of rv's donning san jose streets consuming the city of san jose has selected

30 different locations. >> were people living in rv's are going to be told to either move except shelter or be towed away. kron 4 shock moment has been following this story. he joins us live in san jose with more details. jack. >> yeah, that's right. this program was actually approved back november. and it's really just coming into fruition just now. but as you can see here behind me, anthony with avenue, there are plenty of rv's to see. but by this time next week, they will likely all be gone. >> living in an rv can be castle, noisy. and expensive. yeah, we've been having a lot of tickets just buy a parking overnight. michael petronella has collected piles of parking tickets while living in his rv of check in with avenue in san jose. but this green slip maybe the most consequential. a warning by the city of san jose. but his long-term

parking spot will soon turn into a tow away zones. i think it's a waste of time actually november city officials enacted a program to take 30 streets in total around san jose slowly turning them into tow away zones. what is the first tollway zone on the list? >> the deadline is less than a week away on january 13th. why was the specific location chosen? >> first. >> it's a neighborhood that has been significantly impacted. we've heard from many residents there, but that's true in other neighborhoods. and i want to acknowledge mayor matt mahan says clearing san jose streets of rv's is a long time coming saying many of them but to get schools, shelters and other environments that can be deemed unsafe and of minimum people have the option movie. >> and while that's not ideal, the residents and small businesses that have had a an rv encampment next to them for a year or more deserve some relief shelter space around san jose is full as are their

limited safe parking spaces for people to move their trailers to. but may have says he wants to see increase of 1000 shelter options for the new year. that includes a new safe parking site off berryessa opening in february. i hold that. >> by. being out there and engaging with folks that are these. >> do we knew has cleanups in the zones doing temporary tollway. if people do not move that we are also creating incentives for people to accept shelter and services or fine more sustainable places to be. meantime, michael has been forced to move his rv nearly every week. >> and hopes that can ensue with some kind of help. and i'm the person that doesn't want to deal with any drawn. i just want to sleep and wake up the next day. >> so again, january 13th is that deadline about a week from today when oversized vehicles will no longer be allowed on this part of china with avenue. now, the next location that san jose plans

06:30pm, tonight near pasadena. new video into our newsroom shows people evacuating from that altadena area on buses. the eaton fire has grown to more than 400 acres. news crews on the ground say they have seen some homes burning in that area. this is firefighters are still scrambling to contain the flames in the palisades fire. >> which has also exploded to nearly 3,000 acres tonight. and for us around 30,000 people to evacuate. and with that, we want to check in now with our meteorologist kathy trafton is this storm is the wind starts bad. yeah. the wind is going to get worse before it gets better, right. kathy, you're right the win strengthens overnight in the southern california through los angeles county, ventura county. >> santa barbara county. so it's real problem is going to really make the firefighting even tougher overnight. even is now. >> so it's it's tragic. it's very, very dry atmosphere in southern california that had almost no rain. this rainfall

season, nothing to speak up and of course, the terrain and topography also make it difficult to fight the fires on the other hand, closer to home telegraph hill coit tower. all is well. >> although we do have high wind, we have an advisory in effect for the entire bay area. with the exception of san jose with the exception of the santa clara valley where they don't have a wind advisory, but our own winds could get very strong overnight. so as a big concern could be 45 50 mile an hour winds even gusting to 70 miles per hours in isolated peaks. i think the strongest of the over night in the wee hours of the morning. but look how quickly the winds die down by sunrise at 7.25. much diminished. and then by noon into the afternoon, really, the winds are no longer a factor. high temperatures today were soaring because of the compression heating from the offshore winds. the winds come over mountains and start sink and that compresses and heats the atmosphere. so normally this time of year, early january, we'd be in the mid 50's upper 50's. we soared

into the 60's. even the 70's santa rosa, 15 degrees above normal at 72 degrees. even half moon bay. well, above normal at 67 at this hour at this late hour, still many areas are in the 60's, including hayward at 65 and fairfield at 61 degrees at this hour. it is so much warmer than it was yesterday at this hour. plus 16 degrees in santa rosa. 17 degrees warmer in livermore. 7 degrees warmer in san jose. this week's weather that is all about the winds, wind advisory, higher terrain, big gusts of winds. 45 to 55, even 70 in the isolated peaks. dry weather this week, satellite imagery, future cast really no rain in this forecast. so here we go. let's take a look at our temperatures. and for tomorrow, they will still be warm, not as warm as today, but awfully were many areas in the 60's in san francisco on the pacific coastline. and then they shoreline quite warm

conditions and you start to head south a little warmer yet. 64 for palo alto and then, of course, the warmest in santa's a santa clara numbers in the upper 60's. 67 for santa clara as we head to the east bay. we're still in the mid 60's generally everywhere. this is so much warmer. then you expect this time of year due to these gusty winds. 66 napa and in santa rosa stinson beach. 63 looking ahead the next 7 days. i do not see a drop of rain. temperatures today tomorrow. next few days are warm. slightly cooler heading into the weekend. but we stay sunny and dry. noel. dan. >> deb, thank you. happening right now, former president jimmy carter lying in state at the united states capitol and will remain there until thursday when his body will moved to the washington national cathedral for a national funeral service. washington correspondent basil john reports on events in dc honoring president carter.

richman's elected officials. the second highest paid in the region after the city of berkeley. some community members argued the increase is too high. the council members called that increase necessary pointing to high cost of living in the area. >> it's really difficult to say how many hours they put in. if you ask people who work here. they will tell you that. i mean, here every single day, it's not an easy job. it's it's a full-time job. >> richmond city council will vote on the pay increase at the next meeting. >> with congresswoman barbara lee still deciding on running for oakland's mayor, former city council member loren taylor has emerged as a candidate. taylor says he knows the can right now is because of the budget deficit. however, if he's elected, he says he's ready to face it head-on. >> what i bring and what i think oakland has been missing is a vision on not just how we address the immediate urgency.

but howie rebound from it. so a longer-term vision for the city so that, we may feel a little bit of pain now, but that allows us to really grow and restore in the longer. >> really is expected to make her decision about running for mayor sometime this week. and that would put in a little over 3 months before april's special election. in the south bay, san jose police investigating the city's first deadly crash of the year. this happened just after 10, 30 last night at berryessa in sierra roads. not too far from the bart station. there. police say a man was walking outside of the osswalk when he was hit by an suv. the driver stayed at scene and is cooperating with investigation. >> and update tonight. california's high-speed rail system. governor newsom says tracks will be laid down the starting this spring in central california, the multi-billion dollar project was approved by voters in

2008. it's taken more than a decade. nearly 2 decades to green light at the governor says he has a plan to keep the project funded responsibly. officials say passengers would be able to ride that train sometime between 2032 and 2033. in antioch, the city manager announced a new acting police chief current interim chief set to retire for a second time. the shakeup comes after an agreement between the city and the department of justice to help the police force recover from years of vandals. captain joe, the hill previously had the role from august 2023. through last february city manager had this to say about the appointment. >> i am confident that she feel will continue the work of lauren prine engaging our community and helping us seamlessly transition to a permanent police chief. >> first, a public forum on hiring the next police chief set for next week.
