>> news at 11? that breaking news tonight. powerful winds fueling to wildfires in southern california. they're burning just about 40 miles from each other in altadena and pacific palisades. the fire in out to dina is called the eaton that fire. it's there on the left-hand side of your screen. it broke out around 6.30 this evening and has since grown to more than 400 acres. the larger of the 2, though, the palisades fire. it's been burning for 12 hours now. it's burned. nearly 3,000 acres is since those flames broke out around 10, 30 this morning. thanks for joining us here on kron for news 11. i'm noelle bellow and i'm dan thorn. firefighters fear the already devastating situation is expected to get.

>> even worse overnight because of the strong winds. kron. 4 sarah stinson has been monitoring the situation around the palisades fire and she joins us live in studio right now with the very latest. sara. >> that's right. we just learned a 25 year-old firefighter has a serious head injury. she's been taken to the hospital and multiple burn victims have been reported. now this is stunning video from up above this aerial footage really shows us just how catastrophic this fire has become its expansive. it's active it at the last check, of course, are saying nearly 3,000 acres. but of course, they can tell in the dark and at this time. so you can see for yourself just how much land is burning. i spoke with a cal fire battalion chief who says they have resources from across the bay area down there helping fight this fire, which really doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon. >> it's blowing really hard now. so it's it's going to be a really dangerous situation tonight. our firefighters have a tough fight on their hands. brent with cal fire says it's

all hands on deck to fight the palisades fire with crews from all over the state down in pacific. palisades crews from sonoma lake napa, amador eldorado, butte county, nevada, yuba placer. monterey. >> santa cruz, a lot of units came down to preposition those wind event. >> and you can see behind me it was needed. >> the santa ana winds wreaking havoc tuesday morning sparking this fire around 10, 30, forcing thousands to evacuate to our palisades and topanga community under evacuation order. please leave this causing a mass exodus out of the area with some people having to abandon their cars to run to safety. crews had to use a bulldozer to move the cars out of the way for firefighters, their families up their their pets up there. there are people who really need help. actor steve guttenberg lives in the area. he jumped into action, moving cars and helping others evacuate course. you know, we've got a huge fire up there. we've got huge winds right now. it's really

important for people to help each other. we still don't know the exact number of homes that have been destroyed. but video shows several swallowed by flames. theirs definitely houses it engulfed. so there's fire in a lot of multiple areas from the embers, i suppose before declaring a state of emergency. governor gavin newsom visited the fire zone and saw firsthand. >> impacted the swirling winds and embers and the number of structures that are destroyed, not a few many structures already destroyed and the fire is only expected to continue to grow overnight. where you at right now. >> right on the beach that saw across the street from pch on the fire's been moving in this direction pretty much all day. i believe it did jump pch. and i was told to lifeguard stands, had suffered some burn damage. >> and we're seeing our affiliates down there just blowing in the wind due to these high winds. cal fire may have to suspend their aircraft

and they have already. they just keep reevaluating the situation. but of course, that puts more pressure on the ground. crews. i'm sara stinson reporting back to you. that seems just burning out of control. sarah, thank you. a little bit more on the eaton fire burning in altadena, which is just north of pasadena. >> this fire started around 6.30 this evening. it's about 40 miles away from palisades and it's grown to more than 400 acres. as you can see in this video, they are really working hard to evacuate folks using city buses, even swat vans to evacuate people from their homes. news from our sister station say at least dozens of homes have burned in this fire. all right. with all this, we want to bring in one of our experts here, kron 4 meteorologist kathy trafton joining us with more. >> and just this destructive winds in the >> they are tremendous winds and they're strengthening overnight. many areas seeing just widespread, windy, windy

conditions. there's the area right there of red flag warning. it's critical fire concerns. of course, winds could gust in isolated areas to 80 to 100 miles per hour and widespread 40, 60, 80 miles per hour throughout the area. the area includes los angeles, ventura county, santa barbara county, the mountains in the west and invest mountains. so it's a real concern back here at home. a lot more tranquil. but we too, have offshore winds. winds are really covering much of the bay area except for the san jose area. >> santa clara valley, but our winds to are quite gusty and the highest peaks. isolated winds could be 70 miles per hour overnight. in fact, the overnight winds, as i can see in the very early morning hours. wow. 43 mile per hour and nap and again, they can go to 50, 60 mile per hour winds and some of the higher elevations. >> that's for but they diminish tomorrow morning, sunrise 7.25. and the winds are already starting really die off and they really pull

back by the time we get to midday or so tomorrow. so the wind concerns. our brief for us and the good news for us also is it is very moist because we had so much rain. unlike southern california, which has had very the call back to you guys. all right, cathy, thanks a lot news back here at home. the san francisco police department. >> no longer under state oversight. the a yearlong supervision from the california department of justice. again, back in 2018 when it found sfpd had outdated use-of-force policies and lacked accountability. according to today's report, the police department implemented 263 of 272 reforms. the remaining 9 reforms are in progress happening tomorrow. sept cisco is going to be welcoming a new mayor. daniel lurie is scheduled to be sworn in tomorrow morning as the city's 46 in their conference. lindsey ford spoke with some san francisco residents. >> about the changing of the guard. >> i spoke to 2 san francisco residents about the mayor

elect daniel lurie. one is indecisive about the results and the other is excited about the new change in administration. >> i could on the ground in the >> mcallister out with their son in north beach tuesday, one day before the city welcomes daniel lurie as the new mayor. and i just hope gets better, especially kuz is baby's growing up there and it's just not the san francisco used to be. her biggest concern is the city's opioid crisis and believes it needs to be resolved. so her 4 year-old son and other children will have a bright future. a lot of jack problems and a lot of homeless people problems. and i try to call the police and asked them like can you help the people outside? but it just seems like it's getting worse. others like stephen set of a car excited for lori's term. i'm really excited that daniel lurie one, i think he's going to a great job. and i think just >> since he's been elected just a feels like the city has a lot more hope since being elected lurie has been

except shelter or be towed off. kron four's jack moment reports. >> well, this program was actually approved back in november, but is just taking shape right now. you can see behind me here on this production with avenue. there are plenty of rv's here by this time next week. >> they will likely all be gone. >> living in an rv can be castle, noisy. and expensive. yeah, we've been having a lot of tickets just buy a parking overnight. michael petronella has collected piles of parking tickets while living in his rv of check in with avenue in san jose. but this green slip maybe the most consequential. a warning by the city of san jose. but his long-term parking spot will soon turn into a tow away zones. i think it's a waste of time actually november city officials enacted a program to take 30 streets in total around san jose slowly turning them into tow away zones should what is the first tollway zone on the

list? the deadline is less than a week away on january 13th. why was the specific location chosen? >> first. >> it's a neighborhood that has been significantly impacted. we've heard from many residents there, but that's true in other neighborhoods. and i want to acknowledge mayor matt mahan says clearing san jose streets of rv's is a long time coming saying many of them but get schools, shelters and other environments that can be deemed unsafe. and minimum people have the option movie. >> and while that's not ideal, the residents and small businesses that have had a an rv encampment next to them for a year or more deserve some relief shelter space around san jose is full as are their limited safe parking spaces for people to move their trailers but may have says he wants to see an increase of 1000 shelter options for the new year. that includes a new safe parking site off berryessa opening in february. i hold that. >> by. being out there and engaging with folks that are

first week of january. my goodness, gracious. what a change compared to just a few days ago. so we've warmed up. and that's because of the winds bringing us heating. so the winds are ramping up tonight overnight tonight in the very early morning hours, especially very gusty winds. 43 mile per hour forecast for napa where you see purples and the reds even higher. so could be 45 to 55 mile hour winds in some areas and isolated peaks even in the very highest peaks, maybe 70 miles per hour got some very gusty. and then by tomorrow morning around sunrise around 7.30, or so the winds start to die down and then they even diminished more throughout the day. they become not a factor for us after we get through that tonight. temperature wise. well, the temperature changes courtesy, partly because of these winds, offshore winds. the winds come down and they fall in on these on the mountain side and they start

to compress and the heat, the atmosphere look how much warmer it is right now compared to yesterday at this hour, napa, 16 degrees warmer right now compared to degrees. now, look at here's the forecast model this january. you'd expect to see rain. no rain in the forecast. not through at least january. 12th in terms of temperatures tomorrow still warm, not quite as warm but still in the 60's. pretty much everywhere. >> from san francisco to the pacific coast to the bay shoreline as you head southward toward woodside redwood city numbers in the mid 60's and then you get down to san jose in all. and my goodness gracious, 67 degrees percent is a 66 milpitas and the east bay's also in the 60's pretty much everywhere beautiful conditions. and 68 yacht feel that's one of the one warmest spots in santa rosa. 66 degrees. so over the next 7 days, there's not a drop of rain in the forecast.
