temma tail county responding to a claim made sheriff christina corpus. and how she now is planning to sue. the county will have that and more coming up. well, good wednesday morning. we have a very busy morning. we are tracking those wildfires in southern california. >> today is wednesday, january 8th. i'm reyna harvey. we're talking about the high winds all yesterday. and john is seeing same story today. good morning, john. yeah, we can be thankful for winter rains up here at north. that has really prevented are heightened fire danger. southern california la has not seen. >> those rains kick into gear yet. and the u.s. what i was talking about yesterday, the strong winds, the low humidity resulting in that extraordinary fire danger, which is resulted in the multiple fires around la where were sitting in the bay area this morning. you can see it very well. but flag right

there at the embarcadero is nice and calm. that is a little bit of a sigh of relief. it was extraordinarily windy last night, right? beer right back here at home as well. so it's not just southern california. it is also the bay area that is right here in the midst of these high wind advisories for us until 10:00am. so we're right on the tail end of this strong offshore wind event. it will last a bit longer for southern california. neighbors and with containment. nothing close to anywhere progress made for a lot of these fires. this is a scary situation down south wind gusts still very breezy, not as windy as we were just a couple of hours ago. so we're already starting to see that calming process. and you can see that by the time we work our way through the day, we're going to be finishing the day. nice and calm. so it is gradual coming for us. very welcome. change of pace, 40's to 50's for our current temps, oakland at 57 petaluma and the battle at 48 degrees right now. little bit chilly in fairfax at 39. now

today is going to start windy and calmer. that is definitely the good news for us for southern california. it's going to take longer to get there and we'll keep you updated on that. >> what doing fine this morning. only 7 minutes across the bay bridge with those strong winds. you will notice especially driving a high-profile vehicle, hauling a light load. make sure everything is tied down with these extraordinarily strong winds that we're seeing golden gate bridge, crystal clear, much like yesterday. >> we are staying on top of that breaking news this morning right now, powerful winds are feeling for wildfires in southern california. the most recent fire in sylmar called the hearse fires burned 100 acres. it broke out last night about 10, 30 los angeles fire department also saying another fire, the tamarack fire breaking out tuesday in sun valley. the fire altadena that's called the eaton fire broke out around 06:30pm, tuesday since grown to more than 1000 acres. the large of

the for the palisades fire has now burned nearly 3 1000 acres since flames broke out around 10, 30 yesterday morning. firefighters fearing the already devastating situation could get worse because of the winds for sarah stinson brings us the latest. >> i spoke with a cal fire battalion chief who says they sent several crews down to southern california to help with this fire. that doesn't seem to be letting up any time soon. >> it's blowing really hard now. so it's it's going to be a really dangerous situation tonight. our firefighters have a tough fight on their hands. brent with cal fire says it's all hands on deck to fight the palisades fire with crews from all over the state down in pacific. palisades crews from sonoma lake napa, amador eldorado, butte county, nevada, yuba placer. monterey. >> santa cruz, a lot of units came down to reap preposition those wind event. >> and you can see behind me it was needed.

>> the santa ana winds wreaking havoc tuesday morning sparking this fire around 10, 30, forcing thousands to evacuate to our palisades and topanga community under evacuation order. please leave this causing a mass exodus out of the area with some people having to abandon their cars to run to safety. crews had to use a bulldozer to move the cars out of the way for firefighters, their families up their their pets up there. there are people who really need help. actor steve guttenberg lives in the area. he jumped into action, moving cars and helping others evacuate course. you know, we've got a huge fire up there. we've got huge winds right now. it's really important for people to help each other. we still don't know the exact number of homes that have been destroyed. but video shows several swallowed by flames. theirs definitely houses it engulfed. so there's fire in a lot of multiple areas from the embers, i suppose before declaring a state of emergency. governor gavin newsom visited the fire zone and saw first hand.

>> impacted the swirling winds and embers and the number of structures that are destroyed, not a few many structures already destroyed and the fire is only expected to continue to grow you at right now. >> right on the beach that saw across the street from pch on the fire's been moving this direction pretty much all day. i believe it did jump pch. and i was told to lifeguard stands, had suffered some burn damage. >> due to high winds, cal fire had to suspend some of their aircraft. so that puts even more pressure on the crews on the ground. meanwhile, la fire has called all off-duty firefighters to come help out because it's truly all hands on deck. i'm sara stinson reporting back to you. >> last night opens fire department a post on x so they're going to head south. tell crews fight off those fires. alameda county hayward fremont also helping with the containment as well. back here

in the bay area, firefighters out of fairfield, they are battling a grass fire that broke out just off green valley road fire already burned about one acres. but officials say containment is expected shortly. crews are still on scene working quickly to try to keep the flames from spreading. we're gonna keep you updated on this fire as more information comes into the newsroom. starting today, the moraga orinda fire district. they're going to be can do in a controlled burn out in a renter right near edgewood, drive. officials are saying this is going to start at 10:00am. and another bird is set for tomorrow at 10:00am. firefighters are gonna burn pot materials in the tunnel east bay, right between wilder, los valley. they're trying reduce the wildfire risk and maintain the area's ecosystem. if you're hiking or cycling, i smell a little smoke and they're just reminding people who live there. keep your windows and doors closed time now 507. and happening today, san francisco. welcome. a new mayor, daniel lurie scheduled the sworn in this morning as the city's 46 mayor callers

and the sport talked to some san francisco residents about the changing of the guard. i spoke to 2 san francisco residents about the mayor elect daniel lurie. one is indecisive about the results and the other is excited about the new change in administration. >> i get on the ground in the >> durham mcallister out with their son in north beach tuesday, one day before the city welcomes daniel lurie as the new mayor. and i just hope gets better, especially kuz is baby's growing up there and it's just not the san francisco used to be. her biggest concern is the city's opioid crisis and believes it needs to be resolved. so her 4 year-old son and other children will have a bright future. a lot of jack problems and a lot of homeless people problems. and i try to call the police and asked them like can you help the people outside? but it just seems like it's getting worse. others like stephen set of a car excited for lori's term. i'm really excited that daniel lurie one, i think he's going to a great job. and i think

the embattled sheriff on a claim against the county saying county leaders participated what she's calling an evil scheme to defame her. the county says the claim is the first step towards following a 10 billion dollar lawsuit against the county. this comes amid fallout from a scathing report accusing sheriff corpus of abuses of power, retaliation and ethical violations. county released a statement on tuesday saying in part, quote, the assertions in corpus has claimed that she has been discriminated against harassed and the fame and more so because she's both a woman and a latin x person are completely baseless. and a distraction from the issues that give rise to the present circumstances. the board of supervisors they've placed an amendment on the march ballot asking voters to grant them the power to remove her from office. so i had a call for morning news, antioch. >> it got a new acting police chief will tell you why officials think this person is the right fit. plus, a former councilman is now looking run. we may plenty shares his vision for the city. we'll

running to their cars with their belongings, their pet, their animals, birds dog everything. and fortunately, people were courteous cars were allowed to go in front of other cars it was safe. but i was all of saa sudden like a freeway. be right in front of your your home. that was just hundreds of cars trying to get out at the same time. yoand, yo know, emotionally. . you're your yoyou'u'rere yoyourur prayers, you really are i just please, god, don't relet this take our house, our neighborhood, our friends, and, you know, and then i looked up the street and we have a convalescent center about a block and a half away and i can see it sometimes. but there were so many brave firefighters and pasadena policeman who would care taking, you know, people who were in their 70's 80's 90's

>> actually hard to see for sure. this is where we're sitting at the bay bridge right now. it has calmed down for us. let's compare our winds here locally in the bay with what we've seen in southern california. we'll start with the sierra which is seen extraordinary lee, windy conditions over 100 mile per hour gusts nearby. the eaton fire detections of around 93 mile per hour gusts. that's the fire that's burning just above altadena and pasadena nearby. the palisades fire. the one that's burning around pacific palisades 76 mile per hour peak wind gusts near by the her spy around 66 miles per hour. now, compare that with the oakland hills, which obviously has been extraordinarily windy, too, with around a 54 mile per hour wind gusts. so our winds back here at home in problematic. but they've also been paired with a lot of moisture. we've seen that recent rainfall. that is not something southern california scene and that paired with these extraordinary wind gusts is just making for this very hard situation. here are those high

wind warnings and advisories for southern california. you can see them just really lighting up that southern end of the state here as we make our way up northward. we have the high wind advisories, but ours are set to expire this morning at 10:00am and we're already starting to feel some calmer conditions, especially as compared to last night, which you may have heard. it may have even ketchup. i know it's certainly did me those strong winds that were pushing through winds will gradually come down further and further today by the finish the day we're actually relatively calm up here. it's going to be a slower process of calming down south storm tracker. 4 is still showing those offshore winds as we will across the entire state. very dry forecast ahead of us. this is the low that's responsible for all this offshore wind. it does begin to exit the region. and with that high pressure just builds in going to be a calmer tail end of the week. forecast which will be welcome change of pace, especially

down south. as for temperatures today, we've got another day with daytime highs. well, above average for this time of year, climbing well into the 60's. in fact, yesterday was a record breaker for a couple of areas. areas like santa rosa reach. 72 degrees. breaking the record for this day of january. so i mean, it has been warm out there and blame it on those hot, dry winds. the santa ana's of southern california. and of course, the dry offshore winds that we have back here locally as well. areas like sonoma and napa solidly back in the mid 60's nevado at 65 today. looking ahead, we do get calmer and comers. we go. but we stay dry. there's no chance of rainfall over the next 7 days. roadways this morning doing just fine. we are not seeing any holdups out there. both hands on the wheel, though, as you do, make your bridge crossings as we are seeing such windy conditions still and you're going to feel those stronger gusts, especially on mountain passes and bridges, rain and right, john, thank for that. will the remains of

>> while the fremont police department, they're crediting proposition. 36 for multiple recent arrests. police say they arrested 18 people in december during a two-day operation where police watched to businesses and thieves stole from them. they say 9 of them. they were credited to prop 36 which allows for felony arrest. if the suspect had 2 previous that's related to conviction, according to from a police. they also separately arrested another man at the fremont up causing a disturbance and stealing alcohol. he was later charged under prop 36 time now. 5.26. and new this morning. ladle

fire department says 2024 was a record-breaking year for the cruise. firefighters responded to nearly 19,000 emergency calls last year. that's a 5.2% increase compared to 2023 officials say the increase was driven by a search and fire related incidents, including 149 structure fires, 87 vegetation, fires total fire calls are up 9.5%. the department also handed over 12,000 500 emergency medical serviceecalls. officials say those numbers reflect that going to man on emergency services in the community. >> a huge taper. san francisco as mayor-elect daniel lurie officially takes office in a swearing-in ceremony a little bit later this morning. we'll have the details coming up in a live rep

>> welcome back to the kron. morning news. we're tracking those wildfires that are burning across southern california this morning. we also know a few of the firefighters here at home are going to heading down that way. some point today, top tables been talking about the active wind and weather. we've had for the past couple days. good morning, john. yeah, it's really been a problem for southern california rain. it just makes us all the more thankful of all the winter rains we've received up here in northern california. >> that has absolutely helped to temper our fire danger here locally while southern california hasn't seen hardly any single drop of that winter rain just yet. san francisco right now, a little bit of a breeze at the embarcadero. it is already calming down for us, which is nice news. we do

have a very windy morning in southern california. do in these high wind warnings and wind advisories will remain through the day. ours expire this morning at 10:00am. so we're still at the very tail end of this wind event here locally. but of course, it's not as windy as it was for us last night winds you'll see gradually calm through the day becoming more of that blue shade. love to see that indicating much calmer conditions for us here locally. temperatures today are going to be anywhere between the 30's 60's as you're stepping outside. that's what happees after a windy night. everything's big steps of the commerce parts spots. those tend to be your colder ones will areas like hayward, which have been clearly very windy overnight in vallejo, both sitting at 60 degrees right now as we do move into the afternoon day time highs will solidly be right back into the 60's much as we saw yesterday under sunny conditions. >> waste minutes across the bay bridge. really the only threat you've got, as you think you're crossing the fact that it is breezy out there,

although just in time for the morning commute, we are beginning to calm down. so that is good news. as you are getting out there to start the day right now. i don't think that that let's get back to that breaking news. >> we're tracking multiple wildfires that are burning across southern california. you're looking at the latest incident map from cal fire showing those fires in los angeles county. well, overnight we got this new video. this is of the hearst fire burning on sylmar. it just broke out late tuesday night and officials say it's already burned 100 acres so far around that same time, the los angeles fire department also sent another fire. the tamarack fire breaking out tuesday in sun valley. meanwhile, you have even fire burning altadena which north of pasadena. >> and this video you can see people be loaded on to ambulances, even fire starting around 6.30, yesterday evening, about 40 miles away from the palisades fire and has since grown to more than 500 acres. largest fire nearly 3 1000 acres in los

angeles. fire department says another fire. the tamarac fire broke out tuesday in sun valley. the biden administration presented california with half a billion dollars for emergency disaster relief funds. it comes after president elect trump has warned he might withhold emergency funding for california. and governor newsom does not change course on some policies. the money's not only to be used possible disasters in the future, but also helping people still recovering from major flooding. wind damage caused by the winter storms we've seen over the last few years. >> people are not always aware of the long-term component of disaster recovery. and that's where the hud community development block grant disaster recovery funds come in because they stay with communities for months and years to ensure that that long-term work can happen. >> these funds are going to be distributed to local governments from there. peopl can reach out to determine if they qualify for assistance. happening this morning, san francisco will welcome a new

mayor, daniel lurie will be sworn in at 11, 30 as the city's 46 mayor covers will tran live in san francisco. what can we expect today? will? >> well, right now, if you call a mayor-elect daniel lurie, you would be correct. but after 11, 30, as you mentioned, with the swearing in ceremony, you would be wrong if you use the word elect because after that, he is officially san francisco's newest mayor. we're right in front of city hall and i have to tell you, it is air tight. there are so many signs around here telling people not to park. they dozens of security guards already here. and as the morning moves on, i'm sure there will be countless police officers to sweep through this area in anticipation of the swearing-in ceremony, daniel lurie, 47 years old, a native san franciscan. he will be the first mayor since 1911, that

one political office without ever holding office in the first place he got here after spending 16 million dollars for his campaign. most of that money out of his own pocket i see is one of the heirs to the levi strauss empire. and 60 million dollars was the most ever spent by a candidate mpin san francisco. history. he ran on several platforms, including tough on crime, tackling open air drug use, trying to tackle also the homeless problem in san francisco before today. of course, he has been moving around. san francisco as mayor elect and then he actually stopped by the san francisco police department yesterday. been substantial progress. commends sfpd. >> and we can't stop. we've got to continue to get better. i want sfpd to be known as the

environments that can be deemed unsafe. in minimum, people have the option movie. >> and while that's not ideal, the residents and small businesses that have had a an rv encampment next to them for a year or more deserve some relief shelter space around san jose is full as are their limited safe parking spaces for people to move their trailers but may have says he wants to see increase of 1000 shelter options for the new year. that includes a new safe parking site of berryessa opening in february. i hold that. >> by. >> being out there and engaging with folks in rv's that we are also creating incentives for people to accept shelter and services or fine more sustainable. >> places to be. i mean, i don't think it's fair. all that they're trying to do is they're trying to cleave unhoused people away from the only sanctuary that they really have. shawn carter right is a local unhoused advocate. she says the safe parking spots that may be available are not ideal saying they're too restrictive to

>> we're staying on top of breaking news tracking multiple wildfires burning across southern california. you're taking a look at the latest incident map from cal fire showing those fires in los angeles county overnight. we got this video of the hearse fire burning in sylmar. you just broke out late tuesday night. officials say so far it's burned about 100 acres and then around the same time, the los angeles fire department is saying another fire. the tamarac fire broke out tuesday in sun valley.
