any rain so far this year. that's everything paired with the strong winds, low humidity adds up to what we're seeing right now. that extraordinary fast-growing, series of wildfires down south. we're looking at sfo right here. things are actually improving at our local airports. winds are starting to relax for us. southern california, lax, burbank, having seen a lot of delays, if not cancellations yesterday in part because of those winds and fires. we do have high wind warnings and fire advisories for southern california through the day today. back here at home, our advisory seas, high wind watches set to expire at 10:00am this morning. so we're right at the tail end of our breezy us conditions. in fact, look closely at your wind map here. it really comes down through the day by the finish of the day were downright calm and really nice and comfortable temperatures as of right now showing a pretty wide range anywhere from the 30's in fairfax, too. even a couple of 60's having held on all night long in a few areas.

we are definitely going to be seeing another warm one today. much like yesterday with highs climbing into the 60's under sunshine, rain and all right, john, thank you for that part alert. major delay on rs a full line. >> we've got some equipment issues going on there. and so that's in all directions. the are hopping on that line on bart know you've got some delays to deal with 12 minutes into the city right now. if you are traveling 8 along a richmond center fell and the golden gate bridge pitch at about 19 minutes. darya. james, back to you. thank you. reyna 6 o'clock. let's get to the big news, which are the wildfires burning in southern california with those powerful winds fueling the flames. the most recent us that we're following this morning sylmar which is called the hearse fire that's burned. 500 acres of broke out last night around 10, 30 at the other fire called the tamarack fire broke out tuesday night. that was in sun valley. >> but the larger of the for the palisades fire has now burned nearly 3,000 acres since those flames first broke out at about 10, 30 yesterday

morning. the fire in altadena is called the eaton fire broke out at 6.30 last night. >> it's grown to more than 2000 acres at this point. and firefighters are afraid that the situation could get worse because again, these winds are not letting up in southern california. kron 4 sarah stinson brings us the latest. >> chief who says they sent several crews down to southern california to help with this fire. that doesn't seem to be letting up any time soon. >> it's blowing really hard now. so it's it's going to be a really dangerous situation tonight. our firefighters have a tough fight on their hands. brent with cal fire says it's all hands on deck to fight the palisades fire with crews from all over the state down in pacific. palisades crews from sonoma lake napa, amador eldorado, butte county, nevada, yuba placer. monterey. >> santa cruz, a lot of units came down to reap preposition those wind event. >> and you can see behind me

it was needed. >> the santa ana winds wreaking havoc tuesday morning sparking this fire around 10, 30, forcing thousands to evacuate to our palisades and topanga community under evacuation order. please leave this causing a mass exodus out of the area with some people having to abandon their cars to run to safety. crews had to use a bulldozer to move the cars out of the way for firefighters, their families up their their pets up there. there are people who really need help. actor steve guttenberg lives in the area. he jumped into action, moving cars and helping others evacuate course. you know, we've got a huge fire up there. we've got huge winds right now. it's really important for people to help each other. we still don't know the exact number of homes that have been destroyed. but video shows several swallowed by flames. theirs definitely houses it engulfed. so there's fire in a lot of multiple areas from the embers, i suppose before declaring a state of emergency. governor

gavin newsom visited the fire zone and saw first hand. >> impact of the swirling winds and embers and the number of structures that are destroyed, not a few many structures already destroyed and the fire is only expected to continue to grow you at right now. >> right on the beach that saw across the street from pch on the fire's been moving this direction pretty much all day. i believe it dih jump pch. and i was told to lifeguard stands, had suffered some burns damage. >> due to high winds, cal fire had to suspend some of their aircraft. so that puts even more pressure on the crews on the ground. meanwhile, la fire has called all off-duty firefighters to come help out because it's truly all hands on deck. i'm sara stinson reporting back to now. well, last night, oakland fire department posted on exit. they're also heading south to help crews there. >> fight off those fires. so alameda county hayward and

fremont fire departments all say they're going to be helping as best they can with the containment efforts in southern california land here in the bay area. firefighters in fairfield are battling a vegetation fire. it broke out. >> off of green valley road. it's only burned an acre and containment is expected if not already there working and they did work very quickly to stop the flames from spreading 604 is the time and starting today the moraga orinda fire district is going to conduct a controlled burn in orinda. it's going to be near edgewood drive starting at 10 o'clock this morning. and there will be another controlled burn tomorrow morning at 10, the burn is of piled materials in the tunnel east bay between wilder, a lost valley and they're doing this to reduce wildfire risk and maintain the ecosystem. if you're high, cling hiking is cycling. walking in the area. firefighters say that you may see smoke or even smell it and

they recommend that you keep your windows and doors closed again. you don't have to call 9-1-1. they know about it. they plan these things and they wouldn't do it. if our winds were were extremely schedule that this is true. all right, 605, is the time we've got happening tomorrow. now san francisco is going to be welcoming a new mayor. daniel lurie will be sworn in at 11, 30 as the city's 46 mayor. >> kron four's will tran covering this live in san francisco. well. >> so basically for the next 5 and a half hours, you would be correct if you call him mayor elect. but after that, you would be wrong. he will be officially mayor of san francisco. the 46th one and they are getting ready for the biggest party in the bay area. and i will step out of the way just to show you the lay of the land. obviously we are right in front of city hall. a look at all the barricades in place right now. the flashing lights they have shut down civic center plaza. they are sweeping it continuously. both

lee street sweepers and security guards and police officers making this the safest place in the bay area to be because we expect so many vip to be in attendance, particularly, of course, the new mayor of san francisco, the 46, when daniel lurie, he will be the first mayor in san francisco since 1911 who comes into office without ever holding office see ran on a campaign that cost him 16 million dollars, which is the most ever spent in san francisco. and most of that money came out of his pocket with his mother actually donating 1 million dollars. he is the heir to the levi strauss empire. just in case you're wondering how he was able to do that. he comes from wealth. but according to him and many others, they are. he's thinking about other people, including homelessness. he ran on the platform of that as well tough

mateo county board of supervisors. spirit will represent district one, which includes the cities of burlingame, hillsborough, millbrae and san bruno. she previously represented san mateo county in the state senate and assembly before serving as a u.s. congresswoman for 15 years. also sworn in yesterday, former east palo alto councilmember lisa boucher. argo shea, they succeed supervisors. dave pine and warren slocum and their addition gives the board a female majority. san mateo county, by the way, is also responding to a claim by sheriff christina corpus that she has been discriminated against, harassed and defamed. last week, the embattled sheriff filed a claim against the county saying county leaders participated in what she said was an evil scheme to defame her. the county says this claim is the first step towards filing a 10 million dollar lawsuit against the county. this comes amid fallout from a scathing report that accuses sheriff corpus of abuses of power retaliation

and ethical violations. the county released a statement tuesday saying in part, quote, the assertions in corpus is claim that she has been discriminated against, harassed and defamed and more so because she is both a woman and a latinx person are completely baseless and a distraction from the issues that give rise to the present circumstances and quote. the board of supervisors has placed an amendment on the march ballot. don't forget asking voters to grant them the power to remove her from office. >> also in san jose, a person was killed when they were hit by a car around 10, 30 monday night in the area. various nca roads near the bart station there in the san jose flea market. the driver hit the person as they were crossing the street in san jose's. first traffic and pedestrian death of the year. >> its 6.10, and long lines of oversized vehicles in rv's along san jose's streets are soon going to face a crackdown. san jose just

announced a program where they're going to have tow away zones for rv's. and this week, those zones go into effect. the first zone is a long channel with avenue by snell and south san jose. and you can see there about 20 oversized vehicles there, the locations of the tow away zones were selected in the areas that are close to schools and waterways and interim housing facilities. the city says the section off a channel with avenue got warnings. they already got the warnings and then the toes, though the vehicles will be started to be towed starting january 13th. there are about 30 sites in total that the city plans to clean up over the next 6 months. its 6.11. and still ahead on the kron 4 morning news and the act has a new acting police chief. >> we're going to see why officials think that he is the right person for the job. >> plus, a former councilman now looking to run for mayor of oakland. he shares his

>> 6.14, and your 4 things to know today. the san francisco police department police department is no longer under state oversight. the eight-year long supervision from the california department of justice started in 2018 after they found the sfpd had an outdated use-of-force policy and lacked accountability. according to the report, the police department implemented 263 of

the 272 reforms. 2 people were hurt in a shooting that happened monday night in oakland. it was a verbal dispute of first between 2 people that escalated one, pulled out a gun and shot the other and then took off. the victim is in the hospital. they are expected to be okay. and police are looking for the shooter. the biden administration has presented california with a half a billion dollars for emergency disaster relief. that money is going to be used for possible disasters in the future and also help with people who are recovering from major flooding and also wind damage caused by the winter storms that we've had over the last couple of years. oakland's doctor erica pan is leading the state's public health department. now, governor newsom just appointed her to succeed. doctor, tomas aragon who recently announced retirement doctor pan joined the department of public health in 2020 as deputy director and served in

multiple roles with the alameda county public health department as well since 2011. >> 6.15, now and we are seeing much calmer conditions now across the bay area. welcome change of pace after very windy conditions last night. not a lot of movement on the flag right here. east bay hills got 54 mile per hour gusts yesterday and during the evening now compare that with the sierra first of all, which is steam in excess of 100 mile per hour gusts at the very crest of some of your resorts up there nearby. the eaton fire, a 93 mile per hour. peak wind gust has been detected nearby. the palisades fire in pacific palisades around 76 miles per hour. for that peak wind gusts. so definitely much more significant winds down south. and that is paired with still some very dry conditions down there. they have not seen the same winter moisture that we have gotten in the bay area. and that has really spared us helping us out so much as these dry winds push through. we do have our high wind advisories until 10:00am

this morning for the bay. you'll actually see some gradual calming going on here as we do make our way through the day today, by the end of your day, we are nice and calm across the bay area. these offshore winds are much more a problem for southern california because of that low pressure area that is brushing right past paired with this high-pressure ridge to the west in between the 2. those winds are just getting steered right off shore all across the state, but especially down south. now, as far as our temperatures go today, we are in for another warm definitely above average january day with daytime highs climbing well into the 60's. san bruno at 62 degrees today saying carlos redwood city each at 63 south bay temps much like yesterday mid to upper 60's for you. in fact, we actually broke a record high yesterday. santa rosa, you blasted all the way up to 72 degrees for january 7th. i mean, that is very warm

in that role. he had previously filled the role from august of 2023. through last february. this shake-up comes after an agreement between the city of antioch and the department of justice to help the police force recover from years of scandals. the city manager says that she thinks that the hill is the right person for the job. >> i am confident that she feel will continue the work of lowering prine engaging our community and helping us seamlessly transition to a permanent police chief. >> the first public forum on hiring the next police chief is set for next week. >> well, with congresswoman barbara lee still deciding on whether she'll run for oakland. mayor, former city council member loren taylor has emerged as a candidate. taylor says he knows the situation oakland is in right now because of its budget deficit. however, if elected, he says he's ready to face it head-on. >> what i bring and what i think oakland has been missing is a vision on not just how we

marin county. 2 people are accused of voluntary manslaughter. >> for an opioid overdose death of a 22 year-old man in corte madera. police found that man's body in a car saturday morning on sunnyside avenue and the sheriff's took over the investigation. they ended up arresting the suspects, the identity of the victim has not yet been released. the fremont police are crediting prop 36 with multiple recent arrests. they arrested 18 people in december during a two-day operation where officers watched to

businesses have themes that were stealing from them often and they surveilled that they found 9 of these arrests for credited with prop 36 that allows for a felony arrest. if the suspect had 2 previous staff related convictions. the fremont police say they also separately arrested another man at the fremont hub for causing a disturbance in stealing alcohol. he was later charged under prop 36 as well. >> well, california's homeless population remains the biggest in the nation, but new federal data shows the crisis is growing more slowly here than in most of the rest of the country. so the new findings from the u.s. department of housing and urban development's point in time count shows it's increased just more than 3% in 2024. compared to the year before two-thirds of california's homeless residents sleep outside the highest percentage in the country highlighting the state's need for more shelter. but the number of young californians who were homeless without a parent or

off a little bit here and there looks like we'll have our advisories expire later this morning, right? john, get you up 10:00am. so we're right at the end. have our wind event here locally that winds peaked for us really late yesterday into the last night and it was at my place anyways. and definitely a morning that is going to be still a bit breezy for some of your look outside from mount tam in area which did see wind gusts in excess of 50 miles per hour is looking a lot calmer right now. definitely clear southern california. you have those high wind warning still in effect and they're still extraordinarily breezy down south. our high wind watches as mentioned are going to cancel this morning at 10:00am. and then we're a lot calmer for a lot of the rest of the day. winds are offshore and you can see how they relax really consistently by the finish of the day were downright calm for a lot of areas. now temperatures are in the 40's to 50's sausalito at 52 oakland. 56. fairfax definitely are called the spot down at 37 degrees later

today. it'll be all about the 60's. much like yesterday under that same sunshine, right? all right, john, thank you for that. and we still have that major delay on the s a full line in all directions. >> but the updated news is they are resolving the issue. so hopefully within the next 20 minutes or so, this will no longer be a thing right now. still major delay on the sfo line. they have some equipment issues. but the issue is resolving 15 minutes on the bay bridge. no accidents. there's a little windy out there. 13 on our richmond center fell and the golden gate bridge about 20 minutes. all right. james, back to you. thanks. a lot rain at 6.30, and let's get back to the breaking news that we're following in southern california. multiple wildfires burning and forcing thousands at tens of thousands of people from their homes. this is a live look at the glow coming from the eaton fire, which is in altadena. that's north of pasadena calif are reporting this fire has burned more than 2000 acres right now. containment. >> it's still at 0%. as you

can see. we also have a look at the latest incident map from cal fire showing where these fires are burning across la county. and you can see they're scattered across a wide area. the biggest fry right now is in pacific palisades. that's west of los angeles county. it's nearly 3,000 acres so far none of these fires are contained. no news nation's xavier walton has the very latest. >> you could see the flames behind and i can really fill in their intense. and here's the other thing with the winds being so powerful near hurricane force. you see all the embers blowing. we've been here now for about 20 minutes. this house behind was on fire. the embers blew up to this home over here. and now this home is on fire to give everybody at home a little perspective. this area has never seen anything quite like this. this is unprecedented. we're only a couple miles away from the beach. these homes, multi million dollar homes and each of them that we have seen so far completely reduced i

mean, just take a look around. this is what it looks like. this giving everyone an idea at home. that's what it looks like. you see how strong the winds are. you see him picking up the embers. that's why it is so concerning. because it's going from home. and we're taking a step closer because i mean, just look at how massive those flames are next. i mean, we've been through several neighborhoods already. we started about 02:00am local time. we're going from neighborhood to neighborhood cars, completely charred homes, completely charred. thick smoke everywhere, blowing. we had to put on the goggles and then every once in a while, you just hear a loud bang, it's almost like an explosion. you don't know really what it is or where it came from. and then all around. you can kind of see just the aglow. it's like at the end of a campfire, right? you're getting ready to be out of the fire. and then all the sudden you see a glow. that's kind of like what it in the

surrounding area here in palisades. the only people we have seen so far. >> first responders, obviously this is an evacuation zone. >> first responders. >> media and that's it. i'm a little worried here because here's why. officials say it's only getting worse. >> for the state senator who represents the area where that fire the fire is burning this is a very, very disturbing state senator sasha, rene perez tells our 8 on wallace that her loved ones had to evacuate their homes as well. this is personal for her at this point with this fast-moving fire. >> it's a very scary, very surreal moment. my aunts, my brother, my cousins, you know, all live in sierra madre and and have all had to evacuate more than anything. i just want folks to know, you know, if you're receiving an evacuation warning to take that very seriously and and to

prepare to evacuate. >> now she does say that she and her family are safe and she has been up all night on the phone with senior officials from cal fire and cal oes and the governor's office to coordinate state resources and assistance for her district. >> 6.34 is that. i'm back here closer to home. we have outgoing mayor london breed in our studios yesterday and we asked her if she feels like there's any unfinished business that she's leaving behind. here's what you had to say. >> mayer's, they come and go and ultimately the decisions we make have a lasting impact in. i think there's always going to be a feeling of being unfinished. but my hope is that those types of things will get finished. but as soon as they get finishes on to the next thing, they'll be something else to do. but that's what makes san francisco city. we're always looking for the possibility of making something better. >> it does plan to be at lori's inauguration today.

speaking of san francisco, these after school police department is no longer under state oversight. the eight-year long supervision from the california department of justice began in 2018 when it found that sfpd has an outdated use-of-force policy and lacked accountability. according to the reports the police department implemented 263 of the 272 reforms. the remaining 9 reforms are in progress. it's 6.35, in the woman who was kidnapped and raped in a case out of back in 2015 is speaking out. yeah. this follows news that her attacker is facing. >> new charges kron four's charles clifford. now with the story. >> well, here in seaside on tuesday, denise huskins quinn and her husband, aaron quinn, are reacting to news that their attacker, matthew mueller, is facing additional charges. 47 year-old matthew mueller, who is serving a 40 year prison sentence for kidnapping and denise huskins in 2015 has been accused of committing a series of home invasionsnacross santa clara

county during 2009. he's also been charged in a 2015 kidnapping case in contra costa county. and on tuesday, the el dorado county district attorney announced that mueller is also believed to have kidnapped and sexually assaulted a victim as far back as 1993 when he was just 16 years old. >> that's 2 decades of this mindset that he was living in. >> on tuesday afternoon, denise huskins quinn and her husband, aaron, spoke to the media about the recent developments in these cases. we had all the markers of a serial predator. >> and it's unfortunate that it's taken this long to be able to really give some better clarity and hopefully some sense of peace to these other victims. the new charges come after mueller allegedly confessed to the crimes in letters he sent from prison. seaside police chief nick bohr just had initiated the written correspondence with mueller. >> that led to these alleged confessions. >> i just spoke to him as a human. there was no training or skill or trickery. it was

just often take who i am reaching out. >> i really believe that this is just the tip of the iceberg. denise and aaron say they believe they're probably more unsolved cases out there and they are encouraging all victims of assault to come forward. so if you're in that situation just know. we should always trust yourself, always believe in yourself. matthew mueller is currently being held in a santa clara county jail. once the new cases against him are resolved, he will be transferred to a federal prison in arizona. now, denise and aaron say they're also considering trying to talk directly to matthew mueller in an attempt to get him to reveal more information. but for now in seaside, charles, clifford kron, 4 news. >> its 6.38 and the biden administration is present california with a half a billion dollars for emergency disaster relief. this comes as pres elect. trump has warned that he might withhold emergency funding to california if governor newsom doesn't change his course on some policies. the money is

going to be used for disasters in the future and also help those who are still recovering from previous disasters. major flooding, for example, and wind damage that we've had in storms of the last few years. >> but people are not always aware of the long-term component of disaster recovery. and that's where the hud community development block grant disaster recovery funds come in because they stay with communities for months and years to ensure that that long-term work can happen. now that we have the money, the funds will be distributed to local governments. and from there, people can reach out to determine if they qualify for the assistance. >> all right. now to bury a football. the forty-niners have fired their defensive cordinator nick sorensen and are now on the hunt for someone to take on that although sorenson has been fired. the niners do say they want to keep him with the organization on defensive coaching staff in some capacity, some names for possible replacements are former jets head coach robert solow, who we know well and current jets, interim head

>> we are back time now 6.42, and here for things to know today the moraga orinda fire district is going to be conducting a controlled burn in orinda near edgewood drive. officials say it's set to start at 10:00am with another burn set for 10:00am tomorrow. firefighters will be burning piled materials in the tunnel east bay between wilder and lost valley to try and reduce wildfire risk and maintain the area's ecosystem. meanwhile, firefighters and fairfield are currently battling a grass fire. that fire broke out just off green valley road. that fire already burned about an acre. but officials say containment is expected shortly. the city of antioch now has a new acting police chief kyle. joe. the hill will temporarily served in that role. the hill had previously filled the role from august of 2023 through last february. the shakeup comes after an

agreement between the city of antioch and the department of justice to help police. the police force recover from years of scandal. former congresswoman jackie spear is among 2 new women sworn in to serve on the san mateo county board of supervisors. spear will represent district one which includes the cities of burlingame, hillsborough, millbrae and san bruno. she previously represented san mateo county in the state senate and assembly before than serving in the house is congresswoman for 15 years. mercy bird with oiled feathers is now recovering after being found on a beach at point reyes, national seashore in marin county park. officials say that a wildfire biologist was alerted about the bird. thanks to visitors and rangers, the biologist center to the international bird rescue in fairfield, where veterinary staff say the bird will recover. the park wants to remind everybody that it is illegal to handle or rescue wildlife at the shore. only national park service staff

angeles fire department says it was another 5. the tamarac fire that broke out last night in sun valley. and then there's the big one. the eaton fire in out to dina north of pasadena. you can see people being loaded on to ambulances. this fire started at 6.30, last night. it's about 40 miles away from the palisades fire, which is another big one that one is 2000 plus acres. taking closer look at the palisades fire. actually, it's closer to 3,000 acres. plus, at this point, i said it grew in size overnight. the firefighters say that they are doing the best they can to save homes. but as you can see, this fire has been very destructive. if you look at all 3 of the biggest fires burning right now. >> 80,000 people have been driven from their homes and because of those driving winds, look at how close they are to the to the highways and roadways. a lot of people are in gridlock and they just had to leave their cars and they just were completely burned.
