eyeing. >> another several hours of exceptionally windy conditions, which of really fuel the flames of so many fires that have rapidly expanded here at sfo. good news for any travelers as our winds are calming yesterday, it was very breezy towards the finish the day and last night we still have those high wind warnings for several more hours down in southern california. and that potential of rapid expansion of those fires is stir. certainly still a huge concern as we see new houses being engulfed in flames in multiple cities across l a high wind advisories here locally are only in effect for one more hour until 10:00am this morning. and yes, we've already seen most of our winds relaxing at this point afternoon hours, actually going to be relatively calm. as for daytime highs today, we are going to see some 60's again right now it's 50's to 40's. so it's definitely cool. still go ahead. throw that jacket on later on today. much like yesterday. going to be asking yourselves. this is not

january, whether it is warmer than average for sure. and definitely windier than average for socal reyna. all right, john, we have this major delay on the u.s. a full life for most of the morning on bart. >> they have some earlier equipment issues, but it looks like it's just a slow pool back to being normal so keep that in mind. here. it is a great, fantastic 12 minutes on the bay ridge for about 25 while you're richmond center fell is at 8 san mateo bridge back down to 15 and the golden gate bridge is at 24 all regions. back to you. thanks a lot of 91 right now. we want to take it back to southern california where we are monitoring the 3 biggest fires burning. >> and the latest news that just came out this morning, which is that 2 people have been killed in the southern california wildfires and thousands more acres have burned in these big winds that have whipped up the fires overnight. thousands of people have evacuated as of fires burning in all parts of the l a basin. you've got the woodley fire that someone burning near los angeles about

11 miles west of burbank. we've talked about. >> fires burning in sun valley. fire is burning in pasadena. 5 of them overnight. all breaking out and that's really stretching. firefighters as daria mention thousands of acres has burned so far more than 5,000 plus, more than 1000 structures destroyed. we want to get the latest now on all of this with newsnation's xavier walton. >> these winds are absolutely relentless. they're taking the fire from home to home this one right behind us has been reduced to rubble. you can see it's barely burning, but that fire actually sparked this one here that is raging on the roof right now. you can see it almost fully engulfed and then across the street, another image that we've seen since you've been here, amber, starting this fire, that home fully engulfed. >> this area palisades where we are. iconic not far from pch were on sunset boulevard. people know well. i don't know

what these people are to come back to. i'm told officials say this is only going to get worse. the winds are only going to get stronger and stronger >> but if you take a look there everywhere you look, there's a fire. there's a home going up in smoke. there are embers flying. that's why these fires are spreading so fast. >> and right now, there's no telling when it's going to end. >> from palisades xavier walton news nation. >> well, last night we also heard from the oakland fire department. they posted on social media that they are heading south to help crews battle those fires and they'll be joining as well. alameda county hayward and fremont fire departments but already announced that they're sending help down there as well. >> and here in the bay area, we've talked about how our winds are not as strong, but still there was a grass fire that broke out overnight in the windy conditions in fairfield. this burned off of green valley road because you

can see firefighters get out there quickly and put it out. they limited to about one acre. and starting today about an hour, the and a fire district is going to do a controlled burn near edgewood. drive in orinda starts at 10 o'clock this morning. they're going to do another burn tomorrow morning at 10:00am they're doing this to manage the wildfire risk in the area and also make sure that the vegetation remains healthy and they say that it is ok to do that, that our winds are going to be dying down by the time they start. if you do notice the smoke or flames, they say that this is a planned burn. she don't need to call 9-1-1. but if you live in the area, you may want to keep your windows and doors closed. >> well, this morning, san francisco will be celebrating a new mayor. daniel lurie will be sworn in as the city's 46 mayor and kron four's will tran is covering it live in san francisco. well. >> just standing here, james and area, i see a lot of dignitaries already arriving. david chiu city attorney. he is a silly into his office has

of course he will be at the swearing-in ceremony, which is going to happen in about 2 and a half hours from now. if you don't have to be near city hall, i'm not talking driving in front of it. even on van ness. you know, just avoid this. it is terrible. i've heard so much talking this morning. i thought i was in new york city because people are just choked with traffic as in front of city hall poll, it's shut down. it is crawling with security and police officers. you're looking at grove and that is blocked off to the public as well. never mind civic center plaza. i mean, you can't even get through there at this particular time. so keep that in mind because obviously this is a huge day for the city of san francisco. 46 mayor will officially take office in 2 and a half hours from now. 47 year-old daniel lurie takes over the native san franciscan. well, you he beat

a fellow democrat london breed. not sure if she will be here, but we expect a lot of vip to be in attendance. daniel lurie has been moving around san francisco since basically winning the election on november 7th, when breed conceded the election. so he's been moving around san francisco as like getting to know the community. he has run on platforms that include tougher on crime. no open air drug use trying to deal with the homeless situation in san francisco. he ran on 16 million dollars to attack social media. all the public campaign. i mentioned this and london read at the time. also mention it because she was outspent. th trailing in the polls and then he built up momentum to, of course, where he ultimately won and will be san francisco's mayor who, by the

way, has no political experience. the first mayor in san francisco to do that since 1911. >> back to you will see how goes in. and we're standing by for that swearing-in ceremony. thank you will. and you can watch it from home. we're going to be broadcasting it here as daniel lurie sworn in as the next mayor right here on kron 4 with our special coverage beginning at 11:00am. >> well, former congresswoman jackie spear is among 2 women now that have sworn in to serve on the san mateo county board of supervisors. spirit will represent district one, which includes the cities of burlingame, hillsborough, millbrae and san bruno. she previously represented san mateo county in the state senate and assembly. before then moving to congress and representing the region for 15 years there as a congresswoman also sworn in yesterday, former palo alto councilmember lisa gauthier. they succeed supervisors dave pine and warren slocum and their edition, by the way, now gives the board a female majority.

>> san mateo county is responding to a claim by sheriff christina corpus that she has been discriminated against and harassed and defamed. last week the embattled share filed a claim against the county saying that county leaders participated in what she calls evil scheme to defame her. the county says that this is the first step towards her filing. a 10 million dollar lawsuit against the county. and all this comes amid fallout from a scathing report that accuses the sheriff of abuse of power. retaliation and ethical violations. and the county has released a statement that says in part that the assertions in the claim that she's been discriminated against because she's both a woman and a latinx person are completely baseless. and the county says it's a distraction from the issues. the board of supervisors has placed an amendment on the march ballot. they are asking voters to grant them the power to remove the sheriff from office.

>> well, long lines of oversized vehicles in rv's along san jose streets will soon face a crackdown. san jose announced a program back in november to set up tollway zones for these rv's and this week, though zones will go into effect. so the first tollway zone right there along channel with avenue by snow thats in south san jose. there are about 20 oversized vehicles currently parked there, the locations of tow away zones, by the way, were selected in areas where rv's are close to schools and waterways and interim housing facilities. the city says this section of channel with avenue receives warnings today and then the tollway will be enforced starting january 13th. there are about 30 sites in total that the city's planning on cleaning up over the next 6 months. will people who are unhoused now along train tracks pose an unsafe and dangerous problem for railroad workers across california cities. and that includes in san jose. so

conditions have shown just how close workers and riders passed by these homeless encampments along the tracks. and rebel officials say that these encampments, along with loitering and dumping prevent the company from effectively serving the areas and in some cases it can be dangerous for railroad workers and riders if they have to confront people or objects that are blocking the tracks. >> its 9.10 right now. and if you want to order a beer. >> on your morning commute. >> on the ferry, you can. on monday they started offering alcoholic a snack bars and on board the ferries and trips throughout the system throughout the day. and i guess that means they start the taps rolling. start running in the morning. the expanded service marks the end of the ferries free coffee in the mornings. and that they do say that they have high quality coffee you can buy and snacks. and of course, the bars as we're headlining here, they all open at 6.30, in the

>> welcome back to newsnight. 15 we are definitely keeping a close eye on southern california. we're going to be giving you updates all morning long regarding that, we still have those high wind warnings in effect. >> in many cases till 06:00pm tonight for many of our southern california neighbors around all to the you know, we've seen 90 mile per hour wind gusts overnight and winds will continue today. little bit of good news for us here at home. our winds have already begun to relax. these wind advisories expire at 10:00am this morning and by no means have our winds been a strong. and we've also seen our winter rains. they haven't gotten that down in la. that's the extraordinary fire

potential down there that we are living up to. she can see from mount tam still a little bit breezy winds will continue to relax gradually through the day today. and we do see a nice calm finish to your day. these offshore winds are something that the entire state are really looking at. and for southern california, their extra intense because the proximity of that low and the high to the west really dragging out that dry offshore winds from internal areas out towards the coast. things do come down after today down south, but the damage has already been done. 60's for your highs south and at the coastline today. you're also seeing those 60's elsewhere in the bay area. very much so a warmer than average january day for the bay. so much so that yesterday santa rosa broke your daytime high record getting up to 72 degrees yesterday in santa rosa. we're going to stay in the 60's today, but we're going to be a little bit calmer, which adds up to a really enjoyable feeling forecast definitely recommend getting outside and enjoying this one for a few minutes. at least we will

throughout the app. >> want to take you live to southern california for an update now. you can see the video coming in from a neighborhood that's on fire here. many homes have burned in that fires you can see. and then we're yoalso monitoring ou sister r station, ktla and how they're looking at the weather patterns of the strong winds that have really made this fire with up the winds. the santa ana winds have been incredibly powerful overnight. and that's what's been blowing these tterer embers in some ca miles ahead of the actual fire to land enon rooftops. >> and start neighborhoods burning and that sort of the situation we've seen this morning with 5 fires in total burning right now. we've got more than 50,000 people evacuated 14,000 structures threatened and what you're looking at here is a live picture on the right hand side showing the griffith observatory. that whole park has just this morning been

included in the evacuation zone. no flames currently threatening the griffith observatory, but they just want to make sure that people that are in the past of these flames are getting out well ahead of time just in case. well, because a lot of people who are evacuated overnight, we're stuck in traffic and actually had to ditch their cars and they ran on as you can see here in our graphic, we're talking about the eaton fire being deadly. >> 2 people have been killed in that fire. and also we know fire is looking at some of th devastation. >> that is right behind you there. omar. yeah, we are along pch and triple a drive. want to step out of the way. >> it's hard to put frame hear exactly what this is. but this was a whmobile home community full of mobile homes. more than 50 mobile homes were located in this area right here. and now they are all gone destroyed. we've been talking to people here in this area this morning like michael n

most important part of it all, not as dry as them. we've actually seen a lot of winter rain where hardly had any. here's your view of san francisco. gorgeous morning. obviously all eyes are in socal. they have these high wind warnings in some cases all the way up until 06:00pm tonight. so still several more hours with those extraordinarily strong winds. our winds are about 30 more minutes and we will be done with our wind advisories. winds you can see will continue to come in by the afternoon. hardly a breeze at all. for most areas. temperature wise, we're sitting very comfortably in the 50's for most areas happening. but you're already at 61 degrees will be a gorgeous day out along the coastline with daytime highs solidly with your at the coast or elsewhere in the 60's rain. all right, john, thanks for that. tracking an accident just popped up westbound highway 4. they lee road in pittsburgh. so you're seeing some delays there. also, if you're taken bar, we still got that 20 or that major delay, not 20 minutes. >> major delay that's on the nsa phone line because of an

earlier issue. bridges back down to move in at the limit 15 on the bay bridge while you're rich december fell it at 7 and the golden gate bridge down from 38 to 20 minutes story. james, back to you. thanks a lot. 9.31. is the time right now and we want to get back to the breaking news, which is the fires burning in southern california, turning deadly. >> 2 people have been killed so far. yeah. so that's been the tragedy in this. the fires burned more than 2200 acres so far, at least in one of those fires. add it all up. >> yeah, and we're looking at more than one in $7. 7,000 total between 3, 4, 5, fires actually because so moore broke out earlier this morning. let's go to carlos herrera for a look. dozen homes. >> apartment buildings that have now collapsed to the ground like this one. this one burning for about 30 minutes. a firefighter telling us, sir, that they tried their best to save all the homes in this neighborhood just a few miles north of the passing of a jewish center. but it was just

too late and they're being very strategic in terms of what they can save and where the response. so there's only so many homes, so many buildings, so many structure that these firefighters can put out at this point. they say their priority really is to avoid this fire from spreading and moving further south towards the 2.10 freeway. they don't want this fire to jump the highway. this is a result of what we're seeing now. at least a dozen homes off of mcguire drive just a mere out to dina drive. i have burned to the ground. they are now destroyed. remember people who live here back, you waited and now they're going to come back and find this over oftee at this is if you can see over there that orange glow, that is actually it appears to be new building, possibly homes in that area that caught you see a lot of black smoke billowing

into the air. so that gives an indication that it's it's still actively burning that is in the last few minutes or so. we did not see that orange well past this house here. so again, firefighters really having a tough time. you can see a burned car in the driveway. a lot of cars are actually been destroyed as well by these flames. lot of people we've seen. try to move their their animals, their taking them to safety. that's also been a big issue hearing from firefighters, fire officials say the evacuation orders will continue to expand today as those winds continue to get more powerful. >> oakland doesn't run from challenges. we rise to meet them together. west oakland to the hills from the deep east to the north. we are one city. our connection is much deeper than just a location. together, we can make oakland,

speaking out. yeah. this comes after news that her attacker is now facing new charges. property charles clifford explains. >> well, here in seaside on tuesday, denise huskins quinn and her husband, aaron quinn, are reacting to news that their attacker, matthew mueller, is facing additional charges. 47 year-old matthew mueller, who is serving a 40 year prison sentence for kidnapping and denise huskins in 2015 has been accused of committing a series of home invasions across santa clara county during 2009. he's also been charged in a 2015 kidnapping case in contra costa county. and on tuesday, the el dorado county district attorney announced that mueller is also believed to have kidnapped and sexually assaulted a victim as far back as 1993 when he was just 16 years old. >> that's 2 decades of this mindset that he was living >> on tuesday afternoon, denise huskins quinn and her husband, aaron, spoke to the media about the recent developments in these cases. we had all the markers of a serial predator. >> and it's unfortunate that it's taken this long to be

able really give some better clarity and hopefully some sense of peace to these other victims. the new charges come after mueller allegedly confessed to the crimes in letters he sent from prison. seaside police chief nick bohr just had initiated the written correspondence with mueller. >> that led to these alleged confessions. >> i just spoke to him as a human. there was no training or skill or trickery. it was just often who i am reaching out. >> i really believe that this is just the tip of the iceberg. denise and aaron say they believe they'r probably more unsolved cases out there and they are encouraging all victims of assault to come forward. so if you're in that situation just know. we should always trust yourself, always believe in yourself. matthew mueller is currently being held in a santa clara county jail. once the new cases against him are resolved, he will be transferred to a federal prison in arizona. now, denise and aaron say they're also considering trying to talk directly to

matthew mueller in an attempt to get him to reveal more information. but for now in seaside, charles, clifford kron, 4 news. >> 9.38 and the biden administration has just given california a half-billion dollars for emergency disaster funding. this comes as president elect trump has warned that he withhold emergency funding to california. governor newsom doesn't change course on some of his policies. the money is going to be for any disasters that happen in the future as well as past disasters like flooding and wind damage caused by winter storms that we've had the last few years. >> people are not always aware of the long-term component of disaster recovery. and that's where the hud community development block grant disaster recovery funds come in because they stay with communities for months and years to ensure that that long-term work can happen. >> the funds ame going to be distributing to look distributed to local

>> we're back at 9.43. and a seabird covered in oil is recovering now after being found on a beach out of point reyes, national seashore up in marin county park. officials say a wildlife biologist was alerted about this bird thanks to a visitor and some rangers. the biologist sent that bird to the international bird rescue in fairfield and a veteran or staff there says that the bird should be okay. the park wants remind everybody, though, that it is illegal to handle or rescue wildlife there along the shoreline. so if you do spot one, you have to contact the national park service and a member of the staff will come out and take care of it.
