2:00 pm
>> it too games? breaking news? we have to be okay. i be okay. >> we'll start with the most
2:01 pm

2:02 pm
nancy loo with the latest on the pacific palisades fire, which itself has burned close to 16,000 acres. >> it is not over yet much of pacific palisades remains on fire, destroyed or under threat behind me. just one of the many homes that are on fire. still. over 12 hours since the palisades fire broke out. that particular fire because of the winds whipping things around throwing embers around that just started a new fire down below where there is already a lot of fire devastation with we pan over here. you can see a lot of the homes that are off the ridge here. they are already destroyed from the fires last night we saw a man yesterday eudaly trying to hose down the
2:03 pm
top of his roof of the home. just trying to save it all. the u.s. lee was a futile effort. we're seeing just the entire lack of homes flattened by fire and up in hills. there. there are a number of homes that are smoldering. as well as on fire most people have evacuated. we are seeing a handful of residents who are walking around who were not in active fire zones. but as you can see, it remains quite windy here in pacific palisades. the threat is not over. back to you. >> this is dynamic situation. we've got fires throughout the entire county which are spending our resources very short. >> and hundreds of firefighters are working to fight these fires and save community us. right now. here's some video now at a pasadena where firefighters
2:04 pm
are working to save buildings here. but city leaders are making it very clear that buildings are not their first priority. >> for us to recognize that while the firefighters are there to protect structures, life is first and foremost. frontline. >> we need to make sure that people heed the advice of our first responders. >> end video now of residents being evacuated due fire today. it exploded burning more than 10,000 acres thousands of people. >> evacuation more >> as needed. it like >> and now to video from the eaton fire has a lot of people are finding their homes today are destroyed. >> you know, at the end of the day. only think precious. everything else. second,
2:05 pm
there. >> so this fire is very close to pasadena, which is just east of los angeles. a hug there's people are taking in the immense gravity of the situation here. this fire today exploded from 2000 acres. again, it's more than 10,000 acres. we have some now live video now into our news showing us what's happening right now. this is from ktla, our sister station in los angeles. we see an active fire here. smoke going straight up into the air. and it does appear that there are they're part of the building there just collapsed. it does appear that there are fire crews there on the scene. there's water being poured on the fire at this very moment. looks like they're emergency crews there. but it's really a an uphill battle for the fire crews that are there because as you can see, the fire is burning in a very densely populated area. there's a lot of fuel for these fires to continue to keep moving forward. over 1000 buildings
2:06 pm
have been destroyed. that was a live picture. more on that in just a few moments. we are also learning. the nearly 2 dozen san francisco firefighters are heading to los angeles now to help out the department posted this video today of a strike team heading south. they're ready to help. as they do here in california, fire departments from all different areas go to help out in big situations. we know that there's resources from the san jose fire department. also mountain view. and coming up this hour, we are going to be talking with the city, clare county fire department as they have also sent strike teams down to help in southern california. we're gonna get an update from them about what they're seeing and hearing as this firefight is really. just beginning. i'm meteorologist kyla grogan for now with details still really windy there in southern yemen. absolutely is. and unfortunately that's going to
2:07 pm
be this afternoon. now we do have some better news for them this evening. so let's take a look at our current wind gusts here. you can see look at santa ana. and she know right now. >> 45 mile per hour gusts. we're going zoom in a little closer. some of these fires are and you can see where the color red that indicates that we're talking about, you know, 40 even 50 mile per hour gusts there. some of these gusts have been upwards of 80 miles per hour in spots. red flag warning all the way for santa barbara down to san diego. this is where these fires are. you can see now for fires one north of oxnard. of course we have the palisades fire, the one that is just south of santa clarita and then one that is in the hills right behind pasadena. these are all in very populated areas. and this red flag warning goes through 06:00pm on thursday. so not through today, but through tomorrow. now, let me show you what happens with these winds as we head into the evening. here's where i have some good news notice they start to ramp down. you're looking at about 9 o'clock tonight and that's the way things will and this evening and into the overnight even tomorrow morning. i do think that firefighters will have a much better run in a much better chance to getting some containment. here's the
2:08 pm
problem we get into tomorrow afternoon. you start to see some of this wind rolling again. now it is not as extreme as what they've been dealing with, but nonetheless, that will make firefighting difficult until we get to friday. now we're into friday morning. now we're going to see this wind event really start to ramp down and be done. so they are still under this high wind warning right now. you can see in and around where these fires are in extending all the way down into the san diego area is going to be a very tough time. bring it back to the bay here. obviously, we are so fortunate our wind has ramped down. we have a beautiful day out there. we'll talk more about our local weather when i come back in just a bit. yes, thank you. stay with us here on air and online on kron 4 for more information on these fires, you can get the latest. >> on our website which is kron 4 dot com and we'll be covering this throughout the hour here this afternoon. another big story we're watching as the daniel lurie is now the 46 mayor of san francisco. he officially took the oath of office today at a ceremony right outside of city hall kron four's rob nesbitt
2:09 pm
is there now with a look at the inauguration that just wrapped up. >> justine breakdown is happening now. kind of clean up and getting rid of all the chairs and everything. but this is where hundreds of invited guests sat for the inauguration of daniel lurie. i was even more impressed with the hundreds of other people who are in the perimeter watching from the sides. >> mayor and city of san francisco. congratulations on your lori has officially been sworn in as the city's next mayor in front of a crowd of supporters, family friends, campaign volunteers and other city and state leaders continuing his promise to move the city forward in addressing the growing issues of homelessness and drug addiction. francisco has long been known for its values of tolerance and inclusion. >> but nothing about those values instructs us to allow nearly 8,000 people to experience homelessness in our city. widespread drug dealing public drug use and constantly seeing people in crisis has robbed us of our sense of
2:10 pm
decency and security. the guest list wednesday include california attorney general rob bonta, california first partner jennifer siebel, former mayor's willie brown. london breed and warriors coach steve kerr are like lurie is going to give u.s. inspiration and a vision. he will listen. >> and he will provide the political guidance we need to navigate the issues we face. but ultimately the citizens of san francisco will determine what kind of city we will be. laura gave an insight to his first 100 days in office promising to introduce a package of fentanyl, state of emergency ordinances creating 24 7 police from drop-off center and launching an sfpd hospitality zone task force. today marks the beginning of a new era of accountability and change in city. all. >> one that. >> above all else. >> serves you. the people of san francisco that begins now. >> the inauguration and did
2:11 pm
mayor lori invited the public uninvited guests inside city hall, calling it the people's house. and then tonight there will be a chinatown inaugural night market from 05:30pm, until 09:00pm with music, food and more celebrations for mayor reporting live in san francisco. i'm rob nesbitt. kron 4. >> rob, thank you. and now from lawmakers to business leaders. reaction pouring in overlord becoming the next mayor. so our team coverage continues now with kron four's stephanie lin, who is live with us to share those details >> hey, justine. well, that inauguration ceremony did and at 12 30 and we are now inside city hall. we know that the mayor has quite a long line of folks were lined up outside of his office waiting to take a photo with him and also send all the best as he embarks on his first year as mayor here. take a look behind me. that is the office of the mayor. we also know that that space is being held for a private reception for friends and family at the moment, folks gathering together to celebrate the 46 mayor of the
2:12 pm
city and county of san francisco. daniel lurie. and in his opening remarks today, he did thank the outgoing mayor london breed for her support on this historic day. he also acknowledged the passing of former president jimmy carter and the first responders working to contain those massive wildfires. we just talked about just and in southern california. now, as for policy, as we just heard, robbery capping lurie announced that as he's promised on the campaign trail, he's introducing a number of initiatives. fentanyl, emergency of ordinances to address the crisis and deaths on city streets. we also know public safety, a major soncern for san franciscans and later today said that he launched a policing unit specific to the downtown area. we're talking about places like union square, west county center, highly trafficked areas in san francisco and he promised to have officers there year around. 24 7, not just during conferences. now i spoke with lori staffers today during the inauguration ceremony. they tell me that they know that
2:13 pm
the new mayor, he's got a lot of work ahead of him, including the big issue of the budget. we're talking about an 876 million dollar budget deficit. and he did talk about this during his opening remarks and so the big question about a lot of us are asking here is can he balance the budget without slashing those essential services? i asked san francisco assemblyman matt haney for his thoughts on it. >> we getting for our city and whenever that happens, it's exciting for people there's hope there's optimism about change that will be good thing for our city. we all know that francisco still is having a tough time on many fronts. you can look around the streets and homelessness, the empty retail and it was great to both hear the mayor have a bigger vision, but also talk about accountability and results. this is a time when we all have to support our mayor because we have a new opportunity to have positive changes for our city that will benefit all of us. and i heard that vision from and so i'm
2:14 pm
excited to see what we can do and excited to roll my sleeves and help our i can. he said he's going to declare on day one. a fentanyl emergency. thank we've screaming and yelling and calling for mayor to do that for years now. so for him to start off, being willing to take on tough issues like fentanyl, i think is a good sign. >> now back here live in san francisco outside of the mayor's office. i can tell you that on the campaign trail, mayor-elect lori or other now, mayor lure yet emphasized to me that help public safety would be his number one priority. and i can tell you about law enforcement sources. they tell me that he's already met with them to talk about public safety around the upcoming chinese new year parade. a big event for folks here in san francisco reporting live in city hall in francisco. i'm stef. >> stephanie, thank you. still ahead here to barbara lee announcing that. >> wants to be the town's next
2:15 pm
mayor will hear from of resigents on why they're supporting her bed. plus, devastating video out of los angeles county as we continue our team coverage of the deadly fires there.
2:16 pm
2:17 pm
>> with gratitude for first responders are boots on the ground. >> that are battling this intense and multiple jurisdiction and number of fires. so gratitude to those who are doing the work since yesterday through the night and like chief maroney said, we're going to continue to work hard. insurer that we save. people lives and
2:18 pm
property. >> the pacific palisades fire is now the most destructive in los angeles. history of firefighters are working hard has more than 70,000 people are under evacuation orders. now we know 2 people have died and more than 1000 buildings have destroyed we're going to continue to stay on top of this here on air and online on kron 4. so stay with us. we can has more coverage throughout the next 2 hours here. we'll go now to the east bay because today former congresswoman barbara lee officially announced her bid for mayor in oakland, the special election as an april and as kron 4 street journal reports lee's broad range of supporters say she is the right person for the job. doesn't run from challenges. >> we rise meet them together. wednesday morning. former east bay congresswoman barbara lee's campaign releasing a pre-produced video on social media in which lee reaffirms her commitment to oakland and formally announcing her
2:19 pm
candidacy for mayor. we are one city in a statement. lee says in part, quote, if elected, i will bring my hands-on leadership. new ideas and decades of experience and identifying billions and resources for our great city. so all residents and businesses are stronger and safer and our community has optimism and confidence in oakland's few churches are full support. >> and you know, there's a number of reasons that we support. barbara lee collier is president of oakland, firefighters, local 55 and a captain with the oakland fire department, which this week due to budget constraints was forced to close down 2 more fire stations bringing the current total of shuttered stations to 3. >> the firefighters union, one of nearly 2 dozen labor groups, community and business leaders to endorse lee's candidacy. she reached out to us. >> and she's very concerned about the files closures. he's very concerned about public safety in oakland. then n we obviously share a deep. commitment to open.
2:20 pm
>> it represented oakland in congress from 1998, until last week. last year she chose not to seek reelection and her bid for a seat in the u.s. senate failed bubbly, you know, is to lead open needs to unite city community and business leader carl chan supported the recall of former oakland mayor sheng thao. >> and as ali supporter experience count and we'll just can point not only that, i think important for her to be able to bring in. >> not only experience but all resources that able to detecting we'll pinpoint lee enters the race as the most high-profile candidate for the special elections scheduled april 15th, philippe djegal, all kron. 4 news. >> we'll take a live look outside here for our mount tam camps. we can talk about her weather forecast here. caliber guns. joining us now with details on what's going occur. so lucky how we're so lucky. and we actually have a beautiful day out. there are wind has calmed down. we've got sunshine as we take a live look here.
2:21 pm
>> you can see the transamerica pyramid just glistening in the sun. really lovely. you don't see a lot of things blowing around because weve got barely any wind right now in san francisco, you have to head out to the coast to find some 30 miles per hour and half moon bay. but that's about it. we're also doing okay with our temperatures today. there were a little cooler than we were yesterday. i have to say we've got to 70 degrees yesterday in san jose, santa rosa and the oakland airport today. san francisco looking out for a high of about 66. the average, though, is 57 that just shows you how warm we are. that is the offshore wind in motion. and also that is the high pressure that's sitting off the coast record, though 19, you can see 60 to 79 degrees, though. i think we'll be getting anywhere near that. here are current temperatures are at 63 in san francisco, but up to 68 in santa rosa. 69 in fremont and san jose. so we're flirting with that 70 degree mark today. but just a little bit cooler in most spots. but, you know, by all accounts, this is just a gorgeous day out there. so high pressures i mentioned sitting offshore
2:22 pm
that is allowing us to get all the sunshine that is also bringing all of that warmth, the position of low-pressure is which would keep your eye on. that has everything to do. why southern cal, why southern california is getting that offshore wind. you can see that counter clockwise circulation around low pressure. it just drives that wind right across southern california. now, eventually this is going to relent in this will start to pull away. but we do have another push of wind. let me just show you how this plays mention that we are nice and calm today, but tomorrow we're going to see a different story in the afternoon for southern california. this is our afternoon now. it's not going to likely reach, you know, wind advisory levels or anything like that. but you can see it does start to pick up there. it is that offshore wind that north northeasterly flow. it is relatively short-lived. and then by friday, we're done completely with the wind and we head into the weekend. so as we look at this high pressure, it stays where it's at, but that low pressure starts to track a way that breaks the when gradient for southern california in particular. and that will make all the difference in the world. well, as we will stay here with our high pressure,
2:23 pm
have the sunshine with us and kind of have a spectacular forecast for the next 7 days. take a look here. it's gorgeous. we do cool it down as we get to next week. but when i say cool a doubt, i mean, barely back to average temperatures were above average all through the rest of this week lots of sunshine. >> thank you. kyla and thousands of people will wait out in the cold for the opportunity to pay their respects to former president jimmy carter. the 39th president is lying in state at the u.s. capitol until tomorrow morning ahead of his state funeral. washington correspondent basil john has more. >> whether from near or far we saw a number of people come here to the capitol to pay their final respects to president jimmy carter. >> for many, it was an opportunity to bid farewell to the 39th president. some were even moved to tears. the legacy of the humanity of president jimmy carter to civility, the commitment to bring people together. stands as great testimony as a way
2:24 pm
forward for our country. thousands visited the casket, holding the former president saying he had an impact on their lives. is the first president that i really paid attention to politics. so it just means a lot to me. morris, him and traveled from philadelphia. she first met president carter when she was 5 years old. i remember is he picked me up and i just started talking to him because i'm a talker. salmon says she devoted her life to living in his footsteps. i just want to one last time. iowa senator chuck grassley also took a moment to see carter remembers both of their names on the ballot. back in 1976, is the only sitting member of congress. >> today who served with the carter presidency. >> i remember him fondly. >> visitors will have until tomorrow morning to visit president carter's casket before it's taken to washington national cathedral for the state funeral reporting in washington. i'm basil, john. >> for the looking david,
2:25 pm
>> for and heartbreak after the break. hear from survivowe'
2:26 pm
2:27 pm
look now at the destruction from the eaton fire. more than 10,000 acres burned in this fire alone. 2 people have died here since this fire started last night. the fire is very close to pasadena. that's just east of los angeles and 4 fires. actually, we're learning there is more now. there's 5 fires in total. there are currently burning throughout los angeles county, including this one. >> be okay. high. be okay.
2:28 pm
>> so this is video from the most destructive fire in the history of los angeles. that is the pacific palisades fire. the person taking this video and others were trapped by flames in a home in past pacific palisades. look at the flames there outside the window. just like waves of flames. there. the people inside, though, were able to escape safely. still ahead here at 2 o'clock, the south bay is sending support to los angeles county. >> first responders are on their way right now to fight those massive wildfires. hear from them.
2:29 pm
2:30 pm
2:31 pm
>> and now off. it's hard to be positive right now. but he >> hartman. >> and now there are 5 fires burning near los angeles. this is video from the deadly eaton fire that's in pasadena. 2 people died there and the flames from all 5 of the fires have now burned more than 26,000 acres in total. and there is no containment for any of these fires right now. there's a lot to go over and a lot of new video that's coming into our newsroom. kron four's terisa stasio is live for us there with all the latest details. i this is just overwhelming. these raging fires continued to stretch. firefighters traumatized residents and create widespread destruction. here is some of the latest video into our newsroom to show you. this is from the even fire. the winds continue to whip around tossing embers and causing more damage by the minute. >> tens of thousands of people forced to evacuate the
2:32 pm
situation is so dire. >> mass chaos as ma'am of flames descended driving people from their beloved homes to save their lives. the firefighters has been incredible. there's nothing they can do this. no water la residents sharing their stories while facing horrific circumstances. it's. >> it's very bad. i mean, like i said, as soon as we opened up the door, the smoke was just mean the door was open for a second. it's dark. the power is out. the winds are just scary. i mean, that's the best word to describe are scary. a tory took callaway from walnut creek now lives in pasadena. >> from the hotel to talk with me about the moments where she fled her home with her 12 week-old baby and 4 year-old by quickly loaded up the car and loaded up my >> daughters. and we just hit the road as quickly as we could. but that was the first time i'd been out driving since the winds and i mean, there's debris everywhere. the
2:33 pm
there is a tree blocking our front gate. there is a tree blocking our main exit path from our street and, you know, trying to meet up with my fiance was coming from work and it was just pure chaos. debris everywhere. lots of cars just, you know, driving really slow because they're about to run into a tree in the middle of the street. and, you know, pulling over for firefighters to cook callaway says that she is in constant contact with friends, trying to cope with the horror of it all. >> i have a friend who's a little bit further north in altadena a proper and she is on high alert right now waiting to hear the fate of her house as a couple of houses on her street have burned down and she lost her local fire station at teens and as well as like a hardware store up in altadena off of lake. so i've talked to her and just, you know, trying to support her and keep her calm, the suffering so widespread as each minute, more profound pictures.
2:34 pm
>> painting a painful picture. keep pouring in. >> there was cars piled on top of each other. that was on fire. that was in the middle the road where people had to abandon their cars. >> the stories are so sad now. emergency officials acknowledge that crews ran out of water 3 separate times as a fire fight just so fears at the palace sides. fire more than 15,000 acres have burned 15,000, 300 buildings have been destroyed for the fire. that's about 10,000 acres with many homes adding to the list by the second in the newsroom, theresa kron, 4 news back to just 3. thank you. and the santa clara county fire department has just sent to strike teams to help fight these fires. we want to learn more about this. >> so we're chatting now with the acting deputy chief bill murphy. thank you for joining this afternoon. how are your crews doing that are already there? what have they seen?
2:35 pm
>> it's the first rate team got down there this morning. you know, spoke to strike team leaders soon as he arrived. you know, dismissed described the the devastation that they're they're witnessing in the area. i just like to say to my thoughts, go out to everyone in southern california and what is really a, you know, a devastating weather event we're sending as many resources as we can to help. >> and which fire did they go to? which city are they in? >> so we've sent to strike teams. we caught a 23. 0, 1, has gone to the palisades fire. so that is the fire that's burning on along the pacific coast highway. >> and are they there, you know, with resources that they brought with them from santa clara with are they actively trying to put fire out? are they helping to evacuate people just specific that trying to learn a little bit more details about what exactly they're doing. >> yeah, absolutely. the so 2 strike teams in total
2:36 pm
responded from santa clara county. that's 10 fire engines. it's made up of. but this gives me fire engines and personnel from all of the fire departments in santa clara county. that's 40 firefighters in total, along with some chief officers when they get there. there incorporated immediately into the incident action plan assigned to an area the fire to assist with the firefight. >> and is this a request that comes from southern california or do volunteer to do this? >> it's part of the california master mutual aid system. so you know, the as soon as understood the weather forecast leading up to you're leading into monday. resources from northern california were headed to southern california ahead of the wind actually starting, which is what we refer as pre positioning, which is something that we started in the last few years as a result of, you know, the devastation that we're seeing from wildfires and then we had
2:37 pm
also started planning for if we were going to receive additional what we call mutual aid request to send help from northern california to southern california. it's almost like. >> you kind of thought not that you wanted to. but the thought that something like this could happen. so everyone got ready to go. >> becoming >> all too common occurrence. unfortunately, it's like i said, it's it's it's difficult to watch. >> have they said anything about the water supply if they've notice that there's just isn't enough water to put out the fires. >> tell, you know, i'm i'm not in southern california. so on, you know, part of what i'm elaine to you is what i'm seeing on tv. and, you know, i know from experience again, the devastation down there is it's going to be very significant anytime you have, you know, as many resources responding into an area that's, you know, is densely
2:38 pm
populated as the areas that are involved in fire are the in the potential exists to overwhelm the water supply system. you know, i had the analogy i'd give you is, you know, when you put 10, 10 straws in the cup, the cups going to get him to pretty quick in, you know, we're talking about thousands of structures that the firefighters are trying to protect them. there. >> do you know how long they'll be there? >> what we any time that we send resources about throughout the state. you know, we expect that they're going to be gone for at least 14 days up to 21 days, potentially. when we look at how to rotate crews and provide relief, you doing okay? yeah. good, sir. you know. it goes with the business at this point. it's a you i'm proud of the work that everybody's doing. but, you know, again, it's this has become all too common occurrence over the last several years. >> acting deputy chief bill
2:39 pm
murphy, thank you for joining us here on kron 4 this afternoon. we hope that your crew stay safe there and you'll keep us updated on how they're doing. >> we'll talk about our forecast with a live look here at what's happening. los angeles county can see this ominous sight of the flames and the smoke there that's covering the sky there. these fires are burning. there's now 5 of them in our meteorologist. kyla grogan is here now with details. yeah, actually, we now have 6 of them. there is a new one, the lady of fire. and you can see it here. just 50 acres. i say just 50 acres because that small comparatively speaking to some of the other fires are dealing with. that's in the northern part of the angeles. >> for a schedule is national forest. but obviously the big fire here palisades fire over 15,000 acres. then we also have the eaton fire. that's the one that is in the hills behind pasadena. that is over 10,000 acres. and then, of course, the smaller fires that are around that the woodley fire also the all of us fire now that is over in and around near oxnard. so hurst fire
2:40 pm
now, 500 acres. it is a lot going on quickly and it has everything to do with the wind and thankfully not the temperatures. temperatures right now are war. 73 in los angeles. but that is not really the problem today. we don't have extreme temperatures. it's about the wind and these wind gusts. as you can see where some of the purples and the reds are. that's where those higher gusts are. as we take a look at riverside, for example, there are 34 mile per hour gusts. now, if you put it into motion as we get into tonight, as i mentioned earlier, we do start to see things improve a little bit and that will hold into the overnight tonight. that will help firefighters in awful lot. this is tomorrow morning. now the unfortunate thing is take your eye over to that right side of your screen. you're gonna start to see a little more offshore wind push as we get into the afternoon. now, that is not going to help firefighters and that will be what happens for our day tomorrow. and then finally, as we get into friday, will really start to see this ramp down. and then we'll put a pin in this. it will be done with this wind of that, but it really won't happen until friday. so the
2:41 pm
break tonight is a good thing. but the red flag warning, of course, goes until thursday at 06:00pm. and it wouldn't surprise me if that was actually extended. now that we see that second push of when that's going to be coming in the afternoon on thursday. now, you may be wondering what's going on with the smoke. well, this is offshore wind. so for the most part, it is pushing any of the smoke offshore and also to the south. it's not really coming into northern california or even central california at this point, depending on how long this goes on, that could change. but right now, air quality in and around the fires. obviously, it's terrible. you see the oranges and the reds indicating poor air quality, but none of it making its way up into the northern part of the state yet. so we are actually looking pretty good at the moment live. look right now at half moon bay. and you can see it's actually a beautiful day here in northern california. want to come back. we'll talk a little bit more about our local forecast. >> was new live video now into our news room. this is out los angeles county, one of the areas that is on fire right now. we know that some 1000 structures have been destroyed. something is burning there behind. but we
2:42 pm
