power is out. the winds are just scary. i mean, that's the best word to describe scary. a tory took callaway from walnut creek now lives in pasadena. >> from the hotel to talk with me about the moments where she fled her home with her 12 week-old baby and 4 year-old by quickly loaded up the car and loaded up my >> daughters. and we just hit the road as quickly as we could. but that was the first time i'd been out driving since the winds and i mean, there's debris everywhere. the there is a tree blocking our front gate. there is a tree blocking our main exit path from our street and, you know, trying to meet up with my fiance was coming from work and it was just pure chaos. debris everywhere. lots of cars just, you know, driving really slow because they're about to run into a tree in the middle of the street. and, you know, pulling over for firefighters to cook callaway says that she is in constant contact with friends, trying to cope with the horror of it

all. >> i have a friend who's a little bit further north in altadena a proper and she is on high alert right now waiting to hear the fate of her house as a couple of houses on her street have burned down and she lost her local fire station at teens and as well as like a hardware store up in altadena off of lake. so i've talked to her and just, you know, trying to support her and keep her calm, the suffering so widespread as each minute, more profound pictures. >> painting a painful picture. keep pouring in. >> there was cars piled on top of each other. that was on fire. that was in the middle the road where people have to abandon their cars. >> emergency officials acknowledging that crews ran out of water 3 separate times as a firefight is so fares at the palisades fire. more than

comeback. this one often this like see that that hole right there that used to be home was on fire. when we first got here. but that home started that fire to the left of it and then take a look at that one over there. take out those ferocious lanes and it's all being fueled by the wind. that is a 3 story home to give you an idea. some perspective. this is pretty well to do neighborhood. >> they all just behind me north of 3 million dollars. i watched the second story. the whole ball through looks like we have a first responder coming by now. >> and then we're gonna come here. austin. we're gonna come into the driveway because the flyer >> is moving so fast. it's fueled by the strong, strong winds. this home over here in the thick smoke, too. we got here. this whole wasn't even touched. now, look at you could see directly through this room and you could just see how ferocious those planes are as things are falling from the ceiling. when i first got here, this home had not been
3:06 pm
touched yet. look how high the flames are shooting up in the air. here's the thing. you see the wind gusts. those are taking the wind and blowing those embers and starting new fires every time they land. let's come back this that's exactly how this fire started. and that's exactly how we are watching a tree trees. some 50 feet high, catching fire as well. the winds are not dying down and back. they're supposed to get worse. if there's one bright side, we haven't seen a single person that isn't a first responder, but is it trying to help somebody out? obviously there was an evacuation order in this area. but these fires have been jumping from home to home. in fact. >> now to a live look at what is happening. a angeles county right now. there's so much smoke going into the air. we can still sort of see there. >> active fire burning in the hillside there. and it is also burning in very densely populated areas, destroying
3:07 pm
neighborhood schools. a business is there's a lot to go over with this wind driven fire right now with our meteorologist kyla grogan. she's been tracking it for us. yeah, that's right. and you can see the wind here, the numbers and these are just some of stations that are reporting. they're certainly going to be higher gusts elsewhere. but you see those reds purples, those indicate where, you know, above 40 to 50 miles per hour, they've had some wind gusts that clocked in. >> in the 80 to 90 mile per hour range. so obviously red-flag warnings going for all the way up to santa barbara down in san diego for good reason. not just through today, but also until 6 o'clock on thursday. now we mentioned we have several fires broken out of. so the biggest one in palisades. but you can see how many across la county and then we have one in riverside county and one in ventura county as well. so it's a very volatile situation. now, let's talk about what's going to happen with the winds as we go into the evening. and here is some good news. you start to see those numbers go down. this is about 10 o'clock tonight. that is a much better scenario for firefighters. and it holds pretty much as we get through
3:08 pm
the evening. you see a little bit of when trying to create their through canyons and come through, but it actually starts off a little bit better tomorrow. unfortunately by the afternoon you see a second push of this wind pushing in here and that is going to continue into thursday night. it isn't until friday morning that we finally see this pullback and that should hold. that should be the end of the santa ana wind event. so we do have this high wind warning that is up right now until 6 o'clock. again, you can see for good portion of southern california. they are still very much in this fight. meanwhile, back in the bay area, we are having a beautiful day. our wind has calmed down. i'm happy to say you can see these numbers all under 10 miles per hour. with the exception of half moon bay at about 15. but we're not seeing the pronounced when that they are because low pressure has dropped to the south. i'll talk more about that and how affects our local forecast. come back in just a bit. yes, and stay with us here on air and online for more information about fires that are burning in los angeles county. also, we're learning about riverside and ventura counties this afternoon there fires there.

really >> scary when you can see the flames coming up over the house 2 blocks away and you're just getting out of the driveway and smoke and the ash is so thick. you can't even you can barely see 5 feet in front of you. it's it's like armageddon.
3:18 pm
>> that reaction is from an altadena resident who was forced to evacuate from the eaton fire. she and her mother evacuated with 6 rabbits for cats and a dog. her husband tried to stay behind to protect their house from flames. and the ian fire is forcing thousands of other people to evacuate, including residents from a senior center in the area there of altadena more than 10,000 acres have burned here. and this video shows u.s. employees and first responders trying to push dozens of residents in wheelchairs and hospital beds into waiting emergency vehicles. this fire here, the in fires were 2 people so far have died and there is 0% containment. residents also making sure that pets and livestock have been safely evacuated. this is video from last night showing us a man trying to lead some horses away from the eaton fire. and it's just all read and glowing there with the flames behind them. we'll talk about our
3:19 pm
forecast now. oh, sorry that we have some more video now of the pacific palisades showing the fire and people trying to leave that area. lot of cars on fire officials are saying that at least 300 buildings have been destroyed by palisades fire, which is now at about 16,000 acres. all right. now we'll talk about our local forecast taking a look at this beautiful picture here of the golden gate bridge. quite a difference from what they're experiencing in southern california. meteorologist kyla grogan here now with details on what happened. yeah, they got the unfortunate combination of having higher wind. right. so more devastating wind and then also far drier conditions. we talked about this yesterday. how. >> you know, san francisco got about 10 inches of rain since october first los angeles has gotten less than a quarter of an inch of rain. 2 huge difference. and that is unfortunately come together to make a very devastating situation in southern california. meanwhile, we're having a beautiful day here in northern california. our wind has calmed down. can see the highest number here. half moon bay about 12 miles per hour.
3:20 pm
so we are in a very different situation and thankful for that. as we take a live look here from our mount tam cam. we've got beautiful visibility today. it's just a banner day really taking a look at temperatures today. you know, about 60 threes about as highs we've gotten so far in san francisco. that's well above average. we should be about 57 this time of year. obviously nowhere near 79, which is the record set back in 1962. so not getting that warm. but temperatures right now you can see in san francisco about 61 degrees. we're flirting with that 70 again. we made it up there in santa rosa right now sitting at 69. we are at 71, though, in sunnyvale, 70 as we head down towards san jose. it's, you know, a lot of nice warm temperatures today. well, above average, high pressure. that is what's bringing the sunshine. that is what's allowing the warmth as well where that low pressure is position is key to what's happening in southern california because that counter clockwise circulation around low pressure. you can see it just drives that wind. when you get these 2 systems coming together creates a wind gradient. but the position of where exactly that most
3:21 pm
devastating wind is happening has everything to do with that low pressure being down to the south. let's talk about wind as we go through today. we're looking really good now. tomorrow we are going to see a little push of some more offshore wind. you can see fairfield, they're getting up to about 20 miles per hour. so that is not going to be to the level of say a wind advisory and that it does come down pretty quickly. but it is certainly going to be a little bit of wind for us to look out for now. the intially that low pressure will start to move away. that is going to help southern california kick that wind gradient. we're going to keep the high. and that, of course, keeps the warmth and the nice temperatures. that's what we're going to see. but our 7 day forecast, we just have a little bit of wind tomorrow and then it's just beautiful as we head across the next 7 days. but i'm very happy to say that by friday they're going to be done with the santa ana wind event and think should be much calmer. unfortunately, it's all happening a little too late for the devastation that's there right now. thank you. we'll go to san francisco now where the medical examiner has identified the victim who was shot and killed at a gas station in the mission district on new year's day.
3:22 pm

3:32 pm
since this person posted the video that they were able to escape safely. we do now have some other video to show you. this is a bird's eye view of the eden fire. more than 10,000 acres burning in this fire alone. and we're learning that 5 people have died from these fires since these all started yesterday. this fire is close to pasadena, which is just east of los angeles. and there's just so much smoke in the air because of this. this video shows us the cars near pacific palisades that people just abandoned on the roads as they were trying to escape. they just had to ditch them on the side of the road. some of those because emergency responders were telling them they had to move quicker. some ran out of gas with there. their electric battery started to die. so in order to clear the roads for emergency personnel to get in, they had to bring in this bulldozer to push them out of the way. we're told that a lot of the owners just panicked left their cars behind and they were just blocking the escape routes. this fire has burned
3:33 pm
about 16,000 acres and continues to grow. and for the first time some people are now being able to take a look at the damage in the aftermath of the fires. one man walks us through the rubble of this burned down home saying seeing his house like this is a tragedy that he just cannot understand. >> this has been just the most devastating morning for you. we met i don't know. it's an hour ago when you were just coming up in for the first time seeing what what did you feel? what is continuing to go your mind? >> i mean, i first the fold couldn't believe my eyes. something had like that. within less than 7 hours i left. yes. the 9 o'clock. and today i came in 8th. and then this is what happened here. it's a i can't even believe in the house that i. battle that. for 4 years. and he done it from every detail they've been at it to last 2 years. it's

looked like it turn this way and came down. that's the only way i could explain. >> are deadly and destructive. they're being fueled by the santa ana winds. here's video of what the windstorm look like. they're in southern california. we're also learning that some new information about 1.5 million customers that are without power in los angeles county. that's happening right now. our meteorologist kyla grogan is here now with details. how are the ones doing now? >> well, i mean, the thing is the winds are gonna get a little bit better as we get into the evening and then they have another push of it tomorrow. but let's talk about where these fires are because of the big fire palisades fire. now over 15,000 pushing almost 16,000 acres. the second for that is the big one of the eaton. that's where the folks that we were just looking at that lost their home. that one over 10,000 acres. but you see the other fires are out of the lydia fire. the hearse fire, the woodley fire head up to ventura county. we now have the all of us fire. just 11 acres. so this event has not
3:38 pm
finished yet. unfortunately, temperatures have not been bad today. they've been in the 60's and 70's obviously warm for this time of year. but it is the wind. let's talk about these wind gusts and where we go from here because as we get later into the evening, you do see them start to ramp down. that is great news and what i would like to see is that hold. and we could say we're done with this. that's not the case. tomorrow morning. we're still looking good. but take your eye to that side of the screen there. and you see this next push of wind that comes in in the afternoon tomorrow. >> throughout the afternoon and evening. now it's not going to be as much as they've seen today or yesterday, but it is still present until we get into friday morning. now we get to friday morning. now you're starting to see a very different scenario and those numbers come down and the winds shift direction as well and get less of an offshore component. >> so obviously the red flag warning is still in place and you could see goes through 06:00pm on thursday. kind of showing you all of these fires have been. and this is, you know, the difficult thing is that until that wind is done, we don't have a handle on it
3:39 pm
may be wondering what's going on with the smoke will. this is offshore wind. so it's pushing it either offshore to the south and none of that really making it up into our area. but you can see how bad the air quality is in and around these fires. not surprisingly right, that we've got poor air quality so far. none of that has traveled up the state. but of course, we'll be keeping an eye on that. it depends on how long this goes on for. kyler. thank you. stay with us here on air and online for more information the fires that are burning in southern california right now. you can find the latest information. >> on our website kron 4 dot com. there's a lot of new details that continue to come into our newsroom. we're going out to the east bay because today former congresswoman barbara lee formally announced her bid to become a are in oakland. the special election is in april and lee is joining a list of candidates that does include a former council member. but as kron 4 sweep to call reports broad range of supporters say that she is the right person for the job. >> following an unsuccessful bid for a seat in the u.s.
