>> today kron, 4 news at 4 wildfires are raging out of control across los angeles county. at least 5 significant fires are burning across that county. this is video, 4 of them. we know at least 5 people have died and more than 1000 buildings have been destroyed. the eaton fire in altadena and the palisades fire are the 2 biggest combining to burn more than 25,000 acres since yesterday. good afternoon. thanks for being with us today on kron. 4 news at 4. i'm grant lotus and i'm vicki liviakis. let's take a look at a map. it shows exactly where these fires are. burning. >> the hearst and woodley fires are burning near san fernando valley they have burned about 550 acres combined. the levy, a fire that's burned about 50 acres so far near palmdale. the deadly eaton fire is burning right now in altadena and then of course, there's the massive destructive palisades fire
4:02 pm
burning in pacific palisades and just take a look at some of the video coming in to our newsroom. it's heartbreaking. this is video of the eden fire in altadena which is moved into pasadena. >> this started around dinner time last night. it has burned more than 10,000 acres since last night. 5 people have died in this fire. and the la county sheriff says that number is expected to rise. there is 0 containment here. >> the the fires, as we mentioned, is the palisades fire. more than 1000 structures have been destroyed. there. it's burned almost 16,000 acres. this fire along the coast started yesterday morning. you can see the devastation left behind and as homes continue to burn. residents are being told firefighters are running out of water. >> everybody wants to say their own home. but, you know, i like for example, they got out they don't have any water. they want to get more water, unfortunately, just told you they ran out of water and out
4:03 pm
of water. >> i don't even know the words to use. there's not even words that you can use right now. it's very about. >> in fact, this morning, tell me what you've seen. you've been going through different parts of this neighborhood. yeah, i've been through here. i went by the residential streets, evanston northwest, out that you know where i went to school at soggy mess. >> almost everything is burned down, especially in the northwest area right now. it's very bad. >> yeah, these fires just so devastating affecting the people in los angeles county hurt your heart kron four's terisa stasio is live in the newsroom with more on the damage to rees. it's surreal. it is so sad. these fires continue to wreak havoc. they are causing extensive hardships for firefighters, residents. and there is just no end in sight. >> as chaos as ma'am of flames descended driving people from their loving homes to save their lives. the firefighters has been incredible. there's nothing they can do this. no water la residents sharing their stories while facing
4:04 pm
horrific circumstances. it's. >> it's very bad. i mean, like i said, as soon as we opened up the door, the smoke was just mean the door was open for a second. it's dark. the power is out. the winds are just scary. i mean, that's the best word to describe scary. a tory took callaway from walnut creek now lives in pasadena. >> from the hotel to talk with me about the moments where she fled her home with her 12 week-old baby and 4 year-old by quickly loaded up the car and loaded up my >> and we just hit the road as quickly as we could. but that was the first time i'd been out driving since the winds and i mean, there's debris everywhere. the there is a tree blocking our front gate. there is a tree blocking our main exit path from our street and, you know, trying to meet up with my fiance was coming from work and it was just pure chaos. debris everywhere. lots of cars just, you know,
4:05 pm
driving really slow because they're about to run into a tree in the middle of the street. and, you know, pulling over for firefighters to cook callaway says that she is in constant contact with friends, trying to cope with the horror of it all. >> i have a friend who's a little bit further north in altadena a proper and she is on high alert right now waiting to hear the fate of her house as a couple of houses on her street have burned down and she lost her local fire station teens and as well as like a hardware store up in altadena off of lake. so i've talked to her and just, you know, trying to support her and keep her calm, the suffering so widespread as each minute, more profound pictures. >> painting a painful picture. keep pouring in. >> there was cars piled on top of each other. that was on fire. that was in the middle the road where people have to abandon their cars.
4:06 pm
>> just really heartbreaking stories coming out of los angeles today. so much lost so much suffering. and again, at least 5 people dead end the extent of the damage done just keeps adding up in the newsroom. theresa stasi, back to you guys. all right, teresa, yes, this thing is not over and get fires. looking up here. bay bridge toll plaza. >> to quite a difference. sun shining both in northern and southern california. meteorologist kyla grogan with us now as we look live at the fires and the smoke, kyla is just horrific. it is horrific and it is all about the santa ana winds, which you can see where some of these brighter colors on the map showing that things are just unfortunately still really in full effect with that wind. >> now you can see the flag warning. it is all the way from santa barbara is right on down to san diego. as we zoom in here, you can see where some of these fires are in and around la county and this red
4:07 pm
flag warning does go until 6 o'clock on thursday. so let me show you what's going to happen with the winds over the next 24 hours. now, some good news we're going to see things get better as we go into the evening. you see those numbers start to go down and that will be the case as they go into the overnight and even start tomorrow morning. unfortunately, what happens in the afternoon that wind starts rolling off shore again. more of a santa ana kick happens. it's not quite to the degree that they've seen in the last 24 hours, but it does mean it will make it more difficult for firefighters to try and get any kind of containment on these fires. right now. they're chasing these fires waiting for this to happen friday. you start to see this wind completely wrap up. this will be the end of the santa ana event. that's when they'll be able to get some real containment on the fire. so we do have these high wind warnings that are out. you can see that this also goes through thursday. so, you know, the problem is, is this isn't going to wrap up quickly and it's going to make it difficult for them even though we'll see things get a little bit better tonight. meanwhile,
4:08 pm
back in the bay, of course, we've had a gorgeous day out here. we've been so fortunate with the fact that we've gotten rain an hour. wind has not been any nearly what they've seen in southern california will be back in a little bit. talk more about our local forecast. 22 san francisco firefighters are heading down to los angeles to >> try to help out of the firefighters posting this video today earlier of a strike team heading southward. they say that they are ready to help enforce gayle ong. she is following this story for us and we'll have the very latest coming up on kron for news at 4.30. and we're staying on top of the deadly fires in la for the latest information. just head on over to our website. kron 4 dot com. >> our other big story this afternoon, daniel lurie is now officially the 46th mayor of san francisco. his inauguration was held in front of city hall today and kron four's rob nesbitt was there for the event to rob. it was

that they resonated so much with it looked up to is now gone. all right. thank you, basil. basil, john reporting live for us from dc. have a good evening. back here to the west coast where officials are providing an update on the fires in los angeles county. let's listen in. >> so, >> you know, the state's doing everything that it can right now to make sure that we're allocating resources. removing firefighters from northern california from central california to come here to fight this fire. there's firefighters coming from out of state and so resources are coming. we're going to get this thing contained. but it is going to take time and so make sure that you're staying away, letting our public safety officers do what they need to do so that we can get this contained. >> assembly member john here beating. thank you, mayor of bordeaux. for anyone who is a believer of any faith. please.
4:18 pm
we need your prayers. we need your. your thoughts of healing. anything that you can do to help our community. many of our neighbors, our loved ones. >> and members throughout our community lost their lives today. and we are with you. we see we feel you and we're going to help you get through this. as part of the state of california, along with our governor, our federal and local officials. our main mission now is to keep people safe. minimize and he further devastation. and for those of you who lost their homes. who lost your property? we lost loved ones. we're going to help you rebuild. we're gonna do everything we can to fight for you every day. >> now this week over the next couple months and years to make sure you get your life back. and that is my promise.

that is the promise of everyone behind us. but please stay diligent. he thus heed the warnings of our public safety are safety officers. and please stay out of harm's way. thank you to our men and women on the front lines are first responders. we are not out of this. it is all hands on deck. and it's going to be a long couple nights till. so thank you to everyone who's helping these efforts and please pray for us. >> i want to take a look at the conditions in southern california as we take a live aerial view. >> yeah, it's those santa anas. then they are truly it's been making it near impossible to fight this thing and its some not letting up but a lot but enough, right cuyler. >> well, not letting up to friday that they're going have overnight hours. everybody talk about our local forecast right now. you can see we've got blue skies out there in san francisco. >> and i'm happy to say that our wind has certainly not been a problem today.
4:20 pm
everything has been, you know, for the most part under 10 miles per hour. just a beautiful day out there. we've had temperatures that have been above average. so we low 60's in san francisco and the average about 57. obviously, we've got nowhere near the record set back in 1962. for 79 degrees. temperatures, though, have been warm. certainly seen a few 70's that have been out there now kind of pullback. but san carlos tilt 72 santa rosa 69. high pressure is in control. and that is part of why we're seeing that wind in southern california. as you see the low pressure system that's dropped down to the south. there and that is what kind of allows that counter clockwise circulation to just target that area. you see that offshore flow that is happening there. no, eventually that will start to relent. but it just unfortunately does not get done until friday. so for us, we're going to stay relatively calm. but notice tomorrow we to get a little push of when nothing to devastating, of course, compared to what's going on in southern california. but it will be a little off shore wind and then by friday, that's when we come
4:21 pm
they come down completely. and that's when everything changes. that's got to happen to get that win to relent in southern california's for that low pressure system move away. we have to get this gradient to kind of break. right. when you've got high, low pressure really close to each other. you get a wind gradient. so that's the difference. now, once that happens, high pressure still hangs out and we still get some really nice temperatures and some sunny skies in all that stuff. but, you know, as far as southern california is concerned, that wind gradient is the thing. it's got to break. and then once that happens, they'll do ok, but tonight they will see the wind go down. i just don't think it'll be enough long enough time for firefighters to really get meaningful containment. >> alright, friday can't come soon enough. thank you, kyra. in san francisco, the medical examiner has identified the victim who was shot and killed at a gas station in the mission district on new yeaos. he was thirty-six-year-old tirado day of garcia of san francisco. the shooting happened at 12. 25 early on january first and officers say they found garcia suffering

4:32 pm
they can get. >> los angeles firefighters are stretched thin. several crews from the bay area are already on the ground. and andrew to southern california to help battle the wildfires there. this is all part of a mutual aid program with the state firefighters from francisco, santa clara county, alameda county and sonoma county are sending strike teams, dozens of boots on the ground to help battle the raging wildfires in the los angeles area. this all began when the powerful winds took , small fires and made them explode in size that fast moving fire, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate crews with the santa rosa fire department just left for southern california this afternoon. >> so southern california, 6 print fees in the past just like we had up here in santa rosa. you know, those those kind of fires develop really quick once they get down into some of those neighborhoods and stuff like that the which would be the wildland urban interface where a lot of these neighborhoods meet the wildland areas with the winds
4:33 pm
coupled that it can move very fast. and i think it caught a lot of people off guard. >> and bay area, firefighters, all too familiar as we have experienced, devastating wildfires here. several crews still en route. they should be arriving tonight and even should be arriving right about now. once they arrive on scene, they will receive their assignments. most of them are expected to help with the palisades fire, the largest fire of the 5. back to you. all right. go. >> yeah. but that altadena fire is it's just tearing down homes as well. so they are stretched as thin as you could be. and as we speak of emergency officials who are, you know, they've been working around the clock trying to coordinate the state's response to those fires down south. yeah, our capitol correspondent eytan was is reporting now from the cal oes state operation center. it's near sacramento. >> and he shares the story of a state senator whose family had to evacuate. yeah, here at cal oes officials have screens
4:34 pm

very surreal moment for state senator saucer in a pet is. >> in all literally hits close to home. not only is the eaton fire near pasadena, burning in her district. >> but several for family members in the area had to evacuate my on my brother, my cousins, you know, all live in sierra madre. >> and and have all had to evacuate more than anything. i just want folks to know, you know, if you're receiving an evacuation warning to take that very seriously and and to prepare to evacuate. meantime, president joe biden holding this briefing with governor gavin newsom. an emergency officials in santa monica newsom thanking biden for committing an additional 15 helicopters and signing a major disaster declaration, freeing up more federal resources for southern california on all mr. president, thank you for being here. but with the fire now comes the politics and the blame game. president-elect donald trump writing this post on his social media platform blaming newsom for the
4:36 pm
situation after trump says the governor did not sign off on a trump backed declaration. trump says would have allowed more water deliveries and supplies to southern california. >> to ease dry conditions. trump writing in part, quote, i will demand that this incompetent governor allow beautiful, clean, fresh water to flow into california. he is the blame for this newsom's communications director responding with this quote, there is no such document as the water restoration declaration that is pure fiction. the governor is focused on protecting the people not playing politics and making sure firefighters have all the resources they need. and i'm told the state operation center will continue to be activated until the fires are brought under control. reporting at cal oes headquarters near tom wallace. >> kron 4 news. >> and whether such a big part of this story as we take a live look here down in southern california. word is about to get dark. but crews fortunately this afternoon we're able to get back up into the air with planes and
4:37 pm
helicopters to fight this fire from above. yeah, at least to give them tool, very important tool to fight this thing from the air. >> kron four's meteorologist kathy trafton joins us now with a look conditions. >> weather conditions are still pretty dire. there. >> pts right flag warnings. that's a particularly dangerous situation. red-flag warnings have expired but regular red flag warnings continue for ventura county and from los angeles county with really gusty winds. still 30 to 40 55 mile per hour winds. and you know what, overnight thursday night tomorrow night into friday. the winds strengthen again. those gusty offshore winds coming out of the north-northeast. we'll strengthen again with 50 to 60 mile per hour gust in the typical santa ana locations. and even gusting to 70 in some of the isolated peaks. and then finally on friday, it dies down. here's why we have the winds with high pressure and low pressure. get too close together. the pressure
4:38 pm
gradient tightens and that's what really stimulates the winds counter clockwise flow with a low pressure clockwise with the high pressure and all that converges and really brings u.s. east really strong winds. low pressure will move away. and once it does, that's when the winds will finally begin to relax. air quality is downright terrible in the fire locations, moderate to poor to very poor air quality showing up in the southern california, the fires. but for us, it's a very different scenario. yes, high pressure is bringing us the beautiful weather little bit offshore breezes. beautiful air-quality. very good. wish we could send that down to los angeles, but we're seeing nothing but the greens weather headlines then showing for us in the bay area are offshore flow continues. but it weekends we're seeing some off offshore winds gusting to maybe 40 miles per hour in the hills here. quiet again tonight. the offshore flow continues. and thursday, we get sunshine as mild dry.
