d.c., the nation, all 5 living presidents saying goodbye to president jimmy carter at the age of 100, the longest living president who died on december 29th and all dignitaries now filing out and the jimmy carter will now make his last trip home to plains, georgia for a private funeral tonight. yeah, that's going to occur at maranatha baptist church where he actually taught sunday school well into his 90's. >> and then later, he will be buried at his family home next to his wife, rosalynn carter. >> bringing to an and illustrious life that as we heard described during the entirety of this ceremony is one filled with us love and humanity. yeah, was really a devoted humanitarian and won the nobel peace prize.
9:14 am
>> for his efforts also devoted most of his life of 4 years in the presidency. but 40 years, just helping the community from the ground up. and a lot of that man habitat for humanity, which he >> took part in locally. we remember it well, when he came to town a few years back and we've got actually kron four's will tran standing by with that part of the story, the legacy that president carter left here in the bay area. well. >> jimmy carter thought about san jose and oakland 12 years ago when he was at the very young age of 88, he was in town to build homes. and today, san jose and oakland, they are remembering him. we are in front of city hall, the east plaza and they have placed the door here for people to swing by. and write letters, notes, anything you want to the late president. it will stay here for a little while and maybe even makes its way to the carter center of
9:15 am
eventually he was here back in 2013 to help repair enovate and even build affordable homes. so they took this day, of course, a national day of mourning. but a national day to celebrate the life and legacy of president carter. here's patty weighing cross with habitat for humanity in silicon valley. so many people, patty, think that he started habitat for humanity, but he didn't. but he does so well. and for so long that for many people is habitat for humanity. exactly. i mean, president jimmy carter was a volunteer in an advocate for us for about 4 40 years, ever since he jogged by u.s.. first. >> habitat for humanity construction site back in 1984. and he's been a part of this organization ever since. so really, he's really closely associated with the habitat for humanity name. so it doesn't surprise me that a lot of people think that he founded the organization. and while he didn't do that, he really did help put us on the map. you know, he got involved with habitat when we were still pretty young
9:16 am
organization and really inspired millions, countless people to get involved because what does habitat for humanity do for those who don't know intrinsically and intimately what you guys are all about? >> well, in short, we're all about creating a world where everyone has a decent place to live and especially here in the bay area. we're focused on making that happen by ensuring more people can afford to purchase a home. so we sell homes. they're affordable mortgages to families and households limited incomes. we also do repairs so that people can remain in the homes in the communities that they love. and we help provide financial counseling for house in counseling so that people can better their housing situation and develop the financial skills they need to better those conditions. have you seen an uptick in interest? raised profile once again, unfortunately after his death. absolutely. i mean, it's certainly something that but the president jimmy carter's name is certain. certainly something that's brought many people through our doors. whether that's to give to to
9:17 am
volunteer or to become a partner family to get involved with our services and that there's definitely been an uptick in that interest in the last couple of weeks. speaking of doors, i'm finding very symbolic that you have the door and i think it symbolizes the doors that just as we are looking at legacy and his works. >> for humanity, have you written anything yet? are you kind have i wrote something right over here on this side? this one. this one schools meet. this one is me is you read it our viewers? absolutely. so it says for the thousands of homes you built and the countless consciences you inspired. we thank you. and the heart. course, know, i myself, i'm a carter baby was born during the administration. so the president has always held a very special place in my heart and with his passing, this is the way i want to remember him. as for all of his good works, it's so touching and you might know this. but i want to tell our viewers a little bit more about president carter. did you know that during his time he and his late wife, rosalynn. they
9:18 am
worked along 108,000 workers with habitat for humanity in 14 countries and their amber, that lillard rent of 8 and plan build affordable sure that we don't have 40 by players right now. we don't have for close air getting whacked. >> as city hall create any further spread. >> captain one of all right. thanks a lot. well, and now jimmy carter will be reunited with his wife, rosalynn carter, who died a year ago. right now, the casket will be on its way to plains, georgia and the we covered the whole national funeral you can go online kron 4 dot com and we'll have all the rest of the day's ceremonies that right there. >> 9, 17, 9.18, now is the time we're going to take a break and we'll be back with more of our morning show and our coverage of the wildfires burning in southern california and the other day's news in just a minute.

9:22 am
in the neighborhood is gone. so sorry, guys. >> and people across the area there waking up. to see nothing left. we've got the latest from fire officials as these fires continue to burn. >> good morning and thanks for joining us on this thursday morning. i'm darya james, obviously lots to get to this morning with those fires burning to our south. we've got some new information to share with you. that's just come in this morning. we'll get to that here in first want to check the weather and thing is sings of teen. things have changed for hopefully down south in southern california. those ease off of the winds. maybe. yeah. >> still to have those fire warnings, we are looking at conditions out there that you can take change really i think we will take the graphic, but you're having a mike problem, but hopefully we can take a look at those cause.
9:23 am
>> if the winds have eased off, that's a good thing because those fires are still at 0 containment and it's about 45 square miles that is burned check your mike one more time, john. it just depends where the way here in area take the graphic, at least taking a look at the graphic to show us the weather conditions down in southern i think we might be. alright with your mic now, john, if we could. well, at least we'll get to the weather graphics anyway. if we can bring those up. we'll talk a little bit about that as >> get john work back in iran. looks like my mic was on the whole time. that is okay. hey, we're going to look at the forecast now. so >> from mount tam, we are looking down into the day. it is breezy out there. what we are seeing down in southern california is still high wind warnings and wind advisories as well as those red flag warnings. yesterd y we were seeing gusts in excess of 90 miles per hour today. it's 40 to 50 miles per hour. north northern part of the state. we don't have any of those advisories. we've come down already. and also we've seen our winter rain, something
9:24 am
that southern california just unfortunately hasn't seen any of wind gusts will continue to be relatively calm today making today altogether, enjoyable day for us at home. while southern california still sees that extraordinary fire danger 40's to 50's for our current temperatures as we do move into the afternoon after what has been a colder morning than yesterday. we are going to be looking at a big warm-up for some areas as warm as the low 70's for a few spots later today. rania. all right. on the eve of that tracking in accident, this is on the eastbound side of 80 at 4th street in san francisco. so traveling out of the city heading over to the east bay, things are a little slow. >> the westbound side toll not seen any major delays or issues there. in fact, look at this 11 minutes on the bay bridge, your riches summer fells and 8 and that golden gate bridge a 20 minute ride while the south bay about 15 minutes along one-on-one darya. james, back to you. all right. thanks a lot, ryan 9.24. right now and we want to take a look and a listen at what's going on in southern california.
9:25 am
>> saying we can ever thought these neighborhoods at risk. >> all right. so they're talking to some of the victims now who have evacuated. and you can see here the houses that have been burning. there are thousands of homes and structures that have burned. and now the fires 5 of them combined are covering about 45 square miles to pull people killed. now in these fires, thousands obviously. >> forced to leave their homes as these evacuations have really been growing ever since the fires first broke out tuesday night. we have a map. so we want to share with you this courtesy of cal fire that basically show if we can bring that up. yeah, you go. lots of fires popping up all around la county. in fact, 5 large blazes burning right now with hundreds of acres. thousands really burned. thousands of homes destroyed as well. and the smaller are red dots that you n see maybe towards the left side and towards the right side. those are some of the smaller fires, but it's the bigger fires that are really doing. the bulk of the damage will smaller fires that are obviously the result of
9:26 am
embers that have been blowing up in the wind and dropping down on rooftops. looks like a volcano, doesn't it? >> my god. all right. so we go through some of them by name. the sunset fire, which started around 6 o'clock last night in the hollywood hills. so far that one is burned. 43 acres. 0 containment and that sunset fire is being named the likely cause of a house fire in studio city. and you can see that one that for story house just collapsed in the heat of that fire. and then there's the northern los angeles county fire called the lydia fire enamel of ali and ktla posted this picture. we can see the plumes of smoke rising from that fire in angeles national forest. that one is near act in and the latest data shows that's about 350 acres big. but allen's 40% qbs. so some good news there. but hearst fire, which is another one that we're following here.
9:27 am
>> that broke out tuesday evening in sylmar just. at this point you can see they're attacking from the air as crews were dumping fire retardant on the area. that fire is clearly not under control. it's 10% contained right now, but it's still growing 855 acres burned so far. >> that the latest on the hearst fire, then there's the eaton fire and this has been deadly so far. now, 5 people >> have been killed in this fire. it is 10,000 plus acre 0% contained at this point. this is a big one that started tuesday night when those winds were gusting at 100 miles an hour. it's >> causing scenes like this to. in fact, i think we have video of bank of america that burned to the ground. but even if we don't, that's fine there. school all force to doubt. >> and i quit because structures are burning there. i think about 130,000 people have been evacuated to still tens of thousands of homes in
9:28 am
harm's way. and we've been going from neighborhood to neighborhood. just some of them look like moon scapes. they're just completely leveled. well, and this brings to mind, obviously the fact that we here in northern california need to be prepared to in the case of a wildfire. we know well, what we've dealt with, many of those over the years. but it takes a situation like what we're seeing in southern california to remind us that wildfire season isn't just limited to a few months in the year. it really is a year-round thing that we have to be ready, stretching resources thin as well because some of the crews from the bay area have headed down to help out kron four's joey horta has more on that from san francisco. guys, these men and women are working around the clock. they don't know how long they'll be down there dealing with this stop. >> and the work they're doing, they tell us is both mentally and physically exhausting. it is going to take a toll on them and take a look at this video here from overnight. just over 30 firefighters from san francisco alone. it went down there late last night to los angeles, rested up before deploying this morning and
9:29 am
there among the other bay area, fire departments involved from the north bay to the south bay and they're working. 24 hour shifts. the obstacles are facing the fuel dry grass. lots of it. whether powerful hurricane force winds we saw an. the terrain there, those rugged hills. we just spoke with lieutenant marciano. ali is from the san francisco fire department. and he has experience fighting wildfires, including the deadly paradise fire of 2018, which claimed more than 80 lives. the death and destruction. these firefighters are encountering. takes a toll. >> you know, after seeing so much after a period of time being there, it does affect us a little bit heat. we are all human. we do feel for the community, the people, you know, who are without homes now and have been evacuated. we just want to help, you know, in our hearts, you know, we feel for these people. >> he said what they're encountering la now is
9:30 am
something they have not seen this bad before. they're describing it as the perfect storm and they expect to be down there for days. but the possibility they say of winds picking up again by next week, guys. >> all right, joe, we appreciate it.
9:31 am
9:32 am
>> 9.32. and we're talking about the weather here in the bay area as well as what's going on in los angeles county. all about the winds are keeping track of it all with john in the weather center, john. yes, still a little bit breezy for southern california here in the bay area. are winds have definitely calmed. already, had calm for most of the day yesterday, looking outside from mount tam a little bit of
9:33 am
shaking going on in the camera there. but really not our windiest of days by any means. still down in southern california. 44 to 40, 40 to 50 mile per hour gusts high wind warnings. red-flag warnings in effect and we are actually going to be looking at likely yet another wind event into early next week, too. so they're certainly not out of the woods yet further south. what is really spared us up north is the fact that we've already seen our winter rains. that's even with the low humidity, the dry offshore winds hasn't been near as much of a problem. you are seeing a delta wind fairfield 30 miles per hour up there. elsewhere in the bay, though we are nice and calm today. so and enjoyable day for us to get outside. capitalize on some warmer than average weather yet again for another january day. 40's to 50's right now. but later today, it is going to be a much warmer afternoon with daytime highs climbing into the 60's and even low 70's potentially record-breaking right. all right, john, thank you for that. keeping a close eye on
9:34 am
this accident eastbound at 4th street in san francisco. so for a lot of folks traveling out of the city heading to the east bay. things are a little slow for you. there. and also it's like the westbound side. we're starting to slow down just a little bit. >> might be some people that are stopping see what's going on. 17 minute ride for you now heading into the city this morning. no major delays before the toll plaza just after people drive a little slower. a lot richmond center fell while the san mateo bridge or 15 and our golden gate bridge 20 minute ride that back to you. thank you. reyna 9.33. let's get back to the news out of southern california where we've got 5 fires. >> burning out of control, totaling about 45 square miles in los angeles. so that's what we're dealing with. los angeles county schools are going to be closed this morning. the superintendent says 2 elementary schools in the district of actually been destroyed. we saw one of those. >> burning live yesterday during our break in cut. yeah. and at this point, the count is above 2000 structures, many homes and other buildings. >> kron four's dan kerman has
9:35 am
the latest. >> wednesday evening, fires continue to burn along the pacific coast highway in santa monica and malibu up the hill. much of pacific palisades has been destroyed and what hasn't been continues to be threatened. this incident is very, very dynamic as we speak. the good news, the winds have subsided a bit enough to allow are fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft to provide critical. >> support. to this fire more than 1000 structures have been destroyed so far. and that number is expected to climb. >> i think the house is gone, but i just want to make you know, just i just want to see for myself. residents took electric bikes to make their way up. smoky hills. what they found were neighborhoods burned to rubble. go, go, go, go, go go. one group of hikers got caught off guard and had to run for their lives as we got to the bottom of the rock, we started hear the fire crackled like rate behind us. >> and the wind was starting
9:36 am
to pick up really fast and like to be, we got her things and completely booked as fast as we like. yeah, it was. it was terrifying to like feel like running for your life. others who evacuated tuesday weren't sure they were going to make it gridlock. >> and there's no police at all doing traffic management. so people are because thought we were going to burn up because we had fire going over our heads. the eaton fire just north of pasadena and altadena is also continuing to wreak havoc. >> i went by the residential streets, evanston northwest, out that, you know, where i went to school at soggy mess. almost everything is going down, especially in the northwest area right now. it's very some haven't made it back home to find out if they have a home. >> but they're expecting the worst. we pretty much can assume that it's gone. and it is agonizing. >> it's the 3rd time that had to evacuate for fires. first time. then it's gone this way.
9:37 am
excess water demand is also made some fire hydrants run dry, making firefighters efforts all the more difficult. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> well, here in the bay area, we are, of course, no stranger to devastating fires. and the images being shared here on our broadcast and what you might be seeing on your social media could be triggering for some a psychiatrist with kaiser permanente. santa rosa says it's important in light of what's going on to make sure you take care of yourself. >> these fires can be very triggering is absolutely normal and expected to have either physical, emotional or behavioral changes are responses to them. but if they reach that threshold or of where the symptoms are impacting your daily functioning, don't hesitate to reach out to health care provider either through a community resource like namie your 7, 4, 1, 7, 4, 1, texting that. number 3, your healthcare provider. >> well, doctor katherine also suggest that if you are feeling overwhelmed or worried. take a break from tv
9:38 am
and social media try and get outside. go on a walk, trying to get as much rest as your camp. we're also following a developing situation up in the north bay where santa rosa police say they found 4 people dead inside of a home. investigators say they responded to this home on monarch court west of downtown santa rosa. right around 3 o'clock wednesday afternoon, police initially visited the home after someone associated with the family asked for a welfare check officers got in through a window and that's where they found the bodies. police say this type of incident is very unusual for this. normally quiet neighborhood. >> this neighborhood is a 55 and over mobile home community. it's very quiet, very peaceful. and this is highly unusual for santa rosa as sarah's is a very safe community. and in 2024, we only had 2 homicides. >> well, police are calling this a case of homicide.
9:39 am
they're investigating the relationship between the 4 people who died in that home. and the person who called for a welfare check. >> time now is 9.38. a santa's a family has filed a lawsuit against the parent company of a behavioral health program for autistic children. they claim that a therapist sexually assaulted their daughter. 48 year-old alejandra lopez. nunez was arrested last june. police say his salted and 11 year-old girl more than once during therapy. you nunez was a behavioral therapist with trump of behavioral health. the lawsuit claims the victim's parents tried to report the assault but workers with the program never responded. so they were forced to call the police. the family is suing the company and i say that that this could lead to more assault abuses and they want it handled in the east bay. former congressman bart really is announcing she is running for mayor of oakland. her bid comes ahead of the
9:40 am
special election in april and she joins a list of candidates that includes former city council member loren taylor. one of the many concerns is the city has closed some fire stations because the budget deficit and firefighters believe that that's a danger. they're hoping that lee among others will figure something out. yes, our full support. >> and, you know, there's a number of reasons that we support barbara lee. she's very concerned about the files closures. he's very concerned about public safety in oakland. then n we obviously share a deep. commitment >> in part, lee says in a statement that she will bring new ideas and identify of resources to make residents and businesses stronger and safer. the special election is going to take place on april. 15th. no charges will be filed in a shooting that left a man dead in orinda last year. neighbors who heard it happen believe it was a case of road rage. the shooting was in september on las vegas road
9:41 am
and lot esper all way. 50 year-old scott decker died at the scene. we don't have a lot of information about what happened, but the neighbors heard yelling tires, screeching and gunshots. deputies detained other another person involved. but that person was released. kron. 4 sources confirmed that no charges will be filed in this case. we did reach out to the contra costa county sheriff's office for more information. but we have not yet heard back. police have identified the victim who was shot and killed at a gas station in san francisco is mission district on new year's day. 36 year-old villa garcia was found dead at the gas station on south van ness avenue. the shooter took off. police tracked him down and arrested him and now he faces murder charges. >> all right, 9.41 is the time. let's take another live look this morning at some of the aerial pictures show you
9:42 am
southern california, la county, where, as you can see there at the graphic, the bottom of the screen, sadly, 5 people have died in this fire that has raged now to thousands upon thousands of acres in size. when you combine all these fires together. yeah, i mean, look at the smoke and they're talking about the toxicity of the smoke, by the way, because there's >> about 130,000 people that are out of their homes and look, mean, you can see fires actively burning and spreading. most of these fires, all 5, most of them have 0 containment. and if you total it up, we're looking at 45 square miles. that's up just neighborhood after neighborhood has been leveled. they the people who have been out there say it looks apocalyptic and there are still tens of thousands of people that have been told that they have to evacuate. they don't know if they'll have homes to come back to because this is an active fire situation. this is the second day of no school. >> for 15 school districts in los angeles county. so
9:43 am
>> we've got people on the move. animals on the move displaced by this and and the firefighters are continuing in the thousands are fighting fighting blazes. and we've sent already many crews from the bay area. probably many more to come out, salute lee. all right. more coverage in just a minute. john. what we are seeing a chilly start to the morning. but a warm afternoon ahead of us. >> temperatures today are going to get up into the 60's to low 70's eventually bring the jackets for now. we've got more on your forecast ahead. the the roles are keeping a close eye on your thursday morning
9:44 am
9:45 am
9:46 am
>> i'm 45. want to give you the very latest as we take a live look here at a neighborhood that's just been completely destroyed, although there's one house standing in los angeles county. the fires have burned tens of thousands of acres and we have a new number. it's still general, but double the structures burned 2000 plus homes and other buildings have burned. there were cases where fire departments and police departments were evacuating. schools have burned down businesses and of course, many homes and 5 people have died in these fires so far. we also know that there have been several people have been injured, both civilians and firefighters and the 2000 structures that have burned just the tip of the iceberg because we've had tens of thousands of people evacuated with that many homes. >> threatened by his janice. and they can't get and in those few neighborhoods where, you know, evacuations have been lifted and people gone back in. there's not much left to find. yeah, sadly, there are 5 fires.
9:47 am
>> if you look at from space, you can just see that, you know how massive it looks. and then also when we looked at larger view of and there you have. yeah, you can see whole swaths in. some neighborhoods are near each other. so you can see that the fire kind progress in that direction. but in other cases, its spotty. and that's where the embers blew from those crazy winds that broke out trump down on the roof tops and once one home went up. >> it then spread to other homes in those neighborhoods. it's been absolutely catastrophic to see and make that satellite image showing you a neighborhood there. los angeles county really does paint the picture of what so many other communities are dealing with this morning. we'll have more coverage throughout the morning. john. this the winds and that smoking scene-setter looking good. >> the wind absolutely the smoke is being pushed well off shore so we don't have any impacts from that. >> here in the bay area. in fact, even a lot of la county isn't seeing much smoke because those winds are just pushing it right out into the
9:48 am
ocean. as you can see in the berkeley hills right here, it is a crystal-clear view here locally. got a relatively light offshore breeze that keeps fog pushed away. we don't have the fire danger. lakers southern california neighbors because we've already seen winter rains and our winds have been comparatively light. socal still in the midst of red flag warnings and high wind warnings well into tomorrow evening across the entirety of la county and a lot of surrounding areas to we will continue to see strong winds, 40 to 50 mile per hour gusts but not as strong as they were yesterday. winds here in the bay area are comparatively light. we will see gusty conditions up in the delta. vacaville and fairfield are breezy us to varias the rest of us actually pretty calm today. now, here's a little bit of bad news. this first low is exiting. give us a brief respite during the weekend. but another low is actually going to make its way towards southern california into next week in the positioning between it and this offshore high is yet
9:49 am
again going to steer up. likely another offshore wind event for a lot of the state, including southern california in the bay towards monday night into tuesday. so something that we will all be keeping our eye on 60's for a lot of our daytime highs today could be another record-breaking day for the bay area. as far as our temperatures which will make it a really comfortable january day. so do enjoy the 60's and in some cases, even low 70's, san jose and santa clara, each at 71 today. union city right at 70 degrees. well, oakland at 69 for your high north bay. temperatures also warm low 70's for a lot of us across the north bay. as we move through the forecast, we don't stay this warm for much longer. we will see temperatures sliding downwards into next week. but yes, windy conditions likely yet again into start of next week. >> and along 80 eastbound at 4th street in san francisco.
9:50 am
