dropping flame retardant and water trying to contain this thing. they've done a nice job not to let it get to homes, but officials say it's grown almost 800 acres in the past couple hours. flames have been seen right up against property lines near holmes. thanks for being with us tonight on kron. 4 news at 5. i'm grant lotus. >> and i'm vicki liviakis said devastating, horrific, unprecedented. these are all words being used to describe the wildfires still burning across la county. more than 180,000 people are out of their homes under evacuation orders and at least 5 people have been killed. officials say the city's water system is stretched and was further hampered by power outages. as of this afternoon, hundreds of thousands of angelenos remain without their power kron four's gayle ong. she's been monitoring the wildfires joins us now live from the newsroom with an update. gayle, what are you learning? vikki and the palace. 8 sunday in fires, the 2 largest of the 5 have burned a total of at least

32,000 acres. >> both 0 containment and more than 9,000 structures have been either damaged or destroyed by the fires from above. >> dozens of blocks flight into smoldering rubble in the pacific palisades community on the ground. homeowners surveying the devastation for the first time thursday. did you decide to walk up here today? i wanted to document the damage. >> and contact my insurance company. this is i and just begin the process a very because, you know, i know i have a dirt lot to me. >> the palace aides and ian fires, the largest of several in the los angeles area ravaged communities. just heartbreaking thing out. there's no water. there's no power as of thursday afternoon, at least 4,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed from the eaton fire in altadena goes out to prime provost office up there and right next to it was pizza. joe's, which was.

>> standard in the neighborhood and it's just heartbreaking to see because it feels like this to heart about the dina just been destroyed. these residents home spared but their neighbors, house, 500 feet away. that just burned to the ground. so it's just no pattern in just a random. but chimneys and things smoldering and then the next door, there's a house that's still intact. the fast-moving fire has forced thousands of people to evacuate >> 5 people have died from the fires, cadaver dogs and search crews are searching through the rubble and the death toll is expected to rise. it is safe to say >> that the palisades fire is one of the most destructive natural disasters in the history of los angeles. and we can expect critical fire weather conditions to persist. >> red flag warnings are in effect until friday evening and another offshore wind event is expected next week. so those gusty santa ana winds expected to make a return that will keep conditions dry and that could impact the

firefight in southern california a newsroom. gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> gayle, thank you. as we've been mentioning, thousands of buildings have been destroyed and this is a look at some before and after images, a stretch of beachside homes along the pacific coast highway. some of the you know, this is the before, of course, the most expensive real estate in the country reduce now to rubble. and there's a shot of building actually on fire. southern california. landmarks affected as well. some trees and vegetation here at the getty villa famous spot burned. but the museum's buildings and artwork were saved. remarkably, the museum had water stored on site to help and they took steps to protect structures, including sealing off the galleries to protect pieces from smoke. the ranch ops. the movie star will rogers owned until his death in 1935. has been reduced to rubble as well. you see what it looked like venerable. it

was standing just days ago. no more. during the 20's, the 1920's rogers but land santa monica developing what is now pacific palisades. and this is what theater palisades looked like before. and then after the community theater, which was founded by 3 television writers in the 1960's was fully engulfed in flames tuesday, dramatic before and after images really stunning. vicki. yeah. >> well, grant earlier this morning, la county officials, they updated the public on the status of the sun set fire all evacuation orders have been lifted. it started in the runyon canyon area in the hollywood hills around five-thirty. very dramatic last night burning roughly 43 acres of fire crews. they were able to control the fire overnight. thankfully and crews are currently working to contain the spot fires. the sun swept fire that destroyed a for story home in studio city last night. the powerful

winds caused flames to spread to nearby brush. but crews were able to quickly knock down the flames. keeping them from growing passed. just one acre the cause of this fire is under investigation. as for the hearst fire that's in sylmar. so far it has burned 855 acres. officials say that the flames are 10% contained. there are no reports of any homes at least at this time. that fire broke out late tuesday night near where the 5 freeway meets the 14 in the 2.10 freeways, some areas of sylmar remain under evacuation orders. just north of the the hearst fire is the lydia fire. that's 40% contained. crews worked quickly yesterday to stop the forward progress of that fire. so far burned 340 acres and some roads, though, still remain closed as those fires continue to burn the price to rebuild. well, that continues to go up. the

palisades fire that's burning, as we have mentioned, some of the most expensive real estate in the country where the median home value is over 2 million dollars. the estimated total damage could be somewhere between 52 billion dollars and 57 billion dollars. the number is expected to keep climbing as these fires just continue to rage. it would have more into perspective. the you know, the camp fire in 2018 here in northern california. that was 16.5 billion dollars in damage. >> back live, we go to the calabasas area where this fire has grown to about 800 acres. it started around 2.30. this afternoon. they did great work to prevent it so far from burning homes, making lots of air drops with tanker planes and helicopters. but it is still a threat. as you can see with the fire right up near communities. >> lawrence is here. and are

they going to get any help from the weather? no, not tonight. that scary seeing images like that right now. i think the winds ramp up overnight tonight. >> and with a fire that close to some of those homes, they've got to be evacuating. some of those homes already. right now, the winds have backed off quite a bit from where they've been, don't think they'll be a strong as they've been the last couple of nights. but still, we could still see some gusts over 50 miles an hour, maybe some 60 mile an hour gusts across some of the peaks and with active fires out there already that will likely move some of those sparks and some of the others could possibly start some other fires in and around los angeles basin. dangerous fire conditions continuing their the offshore winds continuing to flow. we are seeing a little bit of a change. there's a bit of a seabreeze. you can see that on the wind pattern there into los angeles toward long beach toward torrance. that's a good sign. i think we see more of that for tomorrow. right now things are bone dry down to 13, 14% relative humidity, extremely dry conditions there that continues for the south all the way into san diego. dry conditions, possible fire conditions overnight tonight.

you have to be extra careful for at least on the night, but more winds on the way. guys. all right, lawrence. and nearly 2 dozen firefighters from san francisco, they were sent >> to la yesterday. in addition, a cruise from alameda and santa clara counties. crews from san mateo county, they're set to arrive in southern california tonight. officials say barry firefighters they could to stay on scene in the fire zone for several weeks. >> meanwhile, pg e said crews and equipment to la to assist with checking fire damage, utility equipment and trying to make the area safer. power restoration, 2 pga black hawk helicopters also arrived yesterday to support firefighting efforts. >> and airbnb is offering temporary housing for people who've been displaced. a spokesperson also says that people here in the bay area they can sign up to open their homes to those impacted by the wildfires. people can offer their home for free or at a discounted rate. you can learn

more about the process by visiting airbnb dot org. as we look at images of these fires burning in southern california, so many of us feel compelled to want to help in some way. indeed. yeah, there are organizations you can donate to but also some concern for scams. kron four's. rob nesbitt joins us now with the verified relief efforts going on. grant vicki volunteers are on the ground now from the red cross. >> working hard to help those who have lost everything from the devastating wildfires. there are also several ways you can help from home. the images of the palace aides and even fires are devastating and what they have left behind books, almost post-apocalyptic. >> it's why the red cross of northern california has stepped up to help sending a team volunteers to los angeles, including vigil ceo hannah malik. folks are still waiting to hear, you know how things are with their specific homes. >> and we just want them to know they they aren't alone. so we're making sure that the basic needs are being met with feeding and mental health and all of that. right now the red

cross has mobilized truckloads of supplies like cots, blankets and water. >> to assist thousands of people at 8 emergency shelters giving people without a home a safe place to stay while they cope with the devastation when it comes to making sure your donations are going to the right place. the american red cross has safeguards in place to help you avoid scams mechanisms in place and processes as folks i take. we do damage assessment to verify damage and all that good stuff. when in doubt you can call 1, 800 red-cross to verify there are other ways to help as well. the california fire foundation is looking for donations to support surviving families of fallen firefighters. gofundme has compiled a list of verified fundraisers for people impacted by the wildfires. spca elese disaster. animal response team is seeking donations to support emergency services such as temporary animal shelters and world central kitchen is providing meals to first responders and evacuees. kron four's nt company nexstar has partnered with the american reo to launch a donation page fo wildfire victims in southern

could be looking the same way la a stark warning from oakland's fire chief to new members of the oakland city council had the to fire stations closed earlier this week been shuttered during oakland's keller fire. >> oakland could have seen the same devastation. los angeles is seeing now. >> you know, if we hadn't hat a little luck and tremendous amount support from our region. it would have been catastrophic. oakland fire chief damon covington says shuttering to fire stations. >> to help close 129 million dollar budget deficit is a gamble. the city cannot afford. we have our full complement. we're rolling the dice. we don't have a full complement. we're really playing russian roulette. the closure of stations. 25 28 for the next 6 months is expected to save the city 5 million dollars. but the closures mean it will take fire crews longer to respond to emergencies per person is having a heart attack or seizure port, a structure fire. we could be

his grave and has now been buried alongside his late wife, rosalynn carter. in the same time that they were born lived most of their lives and died. reporting live in washington. i'm basil, john. all right. thank you so much. based on. >> all right. back here in the bay. time to talk weather as we get a live look. outside and over san francisco. it's beautiful in the bay area. feels like spring time. yeah, lawrence is here to get and update. yeah. you know, we have those offshore winds, but they weren't the real strong ones. and of course, we've already had the rain. so we have to worry about fires here in the bay area. just gorgeous weather all the way. the coast. i mean, these are some kind of temperatures, maybe some record breaking heat around the bay area off to tabulate that just a minute. but >> out the door right now, you've got clear skies all the way the coastline, some sunshine lot of temperatures popping up in the 70's out there for today. so here's where we stand right now. it is still 74 degrees in santa rosa. 68 degrees in concord. 63 and little more. 66 in san jose, 64 in oakland.

>> and 63 degrees in san francisco. little bit of sea breeze, though, along the coastline, half moon bay there at 54 degrees. alright overall, though, yeah, we cannot buy a raindrop out there and this kind of pattern. i don't like to see this in january was watching big blocking ridge beginning to set itself up. and usually when they build in like this are usually around for a good 2, maybe 3 weeks or so. and that's kind of where we're sitting right now the middle of that ridge. and so no rain to speak of that ridge of high pressure holding on sending any chance of rain. well, north of the bay area. and you can see that offshore winds get low pressure moving down toward southern california. get those offshore winds developing. and that's exactly what we've seen. those tremendous santa ana winds up there right now. we are seeing more of an offshore breeze tonight. winds likely going to a ramp up a little bit, especially southern california, some very gusty winds, the bay area. i think we see more of a seabreeze in a couple minutes right now. we're going to toss back to the anchors with the latest on the news. all right, lauren, so let's go ahead and go to southern california, los angeles press conference now. ventura county. this fire was over 50 acres upon arrival.

>> with the potential for rapid growth over the next hour. over 60 fire companies from a los angeles city fire department la county fire department and ventura county fire department were initially dispatched to the specific incident. additional resources have been requested and are in route. the fire started in the city of los angeles and bird rapidly into the county of ventura, los angeles county fire department and ventura county fire department are in unified command. the lafd is now and he's sistine agency. they're currently immediate of evacuation orders in place south no one north of burbank, east of valley circle and west of county lane road and evacuation warning is in place. west valley circle north of saticoy east of woodlake and self of burbank now be providing a quick update on the palisades fire.

current acreage is 19,978. there are currently 5,316 structures that were damaged or destroyed and unfortunately our thoughts and prayers go out to the families. we do have a confirmed 2 fatalities that are now due to this incident. closing. i want to make sure that we think the residents of los angeles for remaining vigilant and this new fire shows that we're absolutely not out of this extreme weather event. i personally want to take and show i should say my thanks and gratitude to all of our firefighters, our first responders and for their families, for all the sacrifices they're relentless efforts in battling this historic fire. and i should make that plural, historic fires. next step we can bring back the mayor. thank you.

chief crowley for your leadership and thank you for that update. we'll have critical updates on the state of this emergency broadly. >> including resources for angelenos who have been impacted again, the priority of all angelenos remains to stay safe and to follow directions from public safety officials. i was at the command post for the palisades fire with governor newsom and other federal partners earlier today. and we talked about strategies to provide relief. first. i just got off the phone with president biden and right before this press conference, i also spoke to vice president harris earlier today earlier today, the president announce the federal as the fema administrator, chris. well, we'll discuss. new resources are also available for impacted

angelenos to recover from this emergency. so thank you. fema administrator for being here today and for your continued partnership on behalf of the white house. second, as you heard from the update from the county at the eaton fire post in coordination with the county of l a we have requested the national guard along with the sheriff and the county has implemented a curfew in all burn burn areas and actually let me correct that and say that the county is looking at a curfew but has not implemented yet. in los angeles, we have had evacuation orders in place in the palisades and in sylmar. those evacuation orders have the force of a curfew, meaning you must leave and you cannot come back into the area. 24 hours a day, we have to protect the area, especially from those properties that remain. i've joined the sheriff in inviting the

national guard to take on non emergency rules and provide us with resources to keep the burn area secure so that our frontline firefighters and police officers can focus on saving lives. so let me be clear. there's going to be 0 tolerance, 0 tolerance for anybody that would be i don't even know how to say this, but that would dare to enter houses or loot. property or anything from the individuals or from structures that remain standing. i was with da hochman this morning and he made it very clear that of anybody is involved in looting or any property damage that he is ready to prosecute to the full extent of the law. so my team is in coordination with the adjutant general who heads the national guard. and i've spoken with the governor with about the national guard to take on specifically non emergency rules to free up our

firefighters and officers to do the lifesaving work that they do in the city so that we are sure to have enough resources to surge our first responders so that they can focus on the life-saving work. i would be listening to an update from officials and los angeles about the >> fires. guess the headline would be. we now know 2 additional people have been killed. we knew 5 were killed in the eden fire and altadena. now 2 were killed in the palisades fire. also just as left the press conference, the mayor there talking about. >> the the issue with looters, the national guard has been deployed. governor newsom saying looting will not be tolerated so we need to take a

>> welcome back to kron. 4 news at 5 here. we have learned new information about 4 people found dead in a home in santa rosa. we have learned that they were family members killed by gunfire. this case is being investigated as a homicide after officers say they found 2 men and 2 women between the ages of 33 77 with gunshot wounds. they were found in different areas of the house, a semiautomatic gun. handgun was found near one of the bodies. police also searched a home in san jose which they say is linked to one of the victims will update you on this tragedy as we learn more. >> 2 people are under arrest, accused of stealing all this mail in south city. officers

say a postal truck was delivering mail when the suspects went in and stole from it. police used a license plate reader to track down the suspects. car and arrested 2 people a day later. police say that they recovered boxes of stolen mail from multiple bay area cities. >> the sentencing date for them killed cash founder bob lee has been pushed back. name many was scheduled to appear in court tomorrow to learn his sentencing date. but that will know now happened february 7th. that is when they'll set a date for his sentencing. mo, many was found guilty of stabbing lead to death last month. he faces 16 years to life in prison. >> still ahead, new legislation to help out fire victims. why one lawmaker says yeah, they'd rather see the special session on fire assistance.
