>> news at 6 begins breaking news. >> breaking news out of southern california tonight where a fire has erupted in calabassas. this fire now burning nearly 800 acres growing from just 50 acres couple hours ago. evacuation orders are in effect for that area. >> officials have told people to get out now. good evening, everybody. i'm vicki liviakis. thanks for joining us. i'm grant lotus. the fire now burning in calabassas is one of several fires that have been burning in and around los angeles county. the 2 biggest the crews are fighting by far the fires and palisades and

altadena. the altadena fire is being called the eaton fire within the last hour, officials updated the public and said they have found 2 people who died in the palisades fire. that's in addition to 5 people who have died in the eaton fire in altadena, our country's gayle ong joins us now live from the d newsroom with the latest. what can you tell us? >> vicki grant, the palisades and ian pfizer, largest of the several fires burning in southern california, have burned at least 32,000 acres at last check, both 0 containment and more than 10,000 structures. many of them homes have burned in the fnres from above. >> dozens of blocks flight into smoldering rubble in the pacific palisades community on the ground. homeowners surveying the devastation for the first time thursday. did you decide to walk up here i wanted to document the damage. >> and contact my insurance company. this i and just begin

the process a very because, you know, i know i have a dirt lot me. >> the palace aides and ian fires, the largest of several in the los angeles area ravaged communities. just heartbreaking thing out. there's no water. there's no power as of thursday afternoon, at least 4,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed from the eaton fire in altadena goes out to prime provost office up there and right next to it was pizza. joe's, which was >> standard in the neighborhood it's just heartbreaking to see feels like this to heart about the dina just been destroyed. these residents home spared, but their neighbors, house, 500 feet away. that just burned to the ground. so it's just no pattern, just a random, just chimneys and things smoldering. and then the next door, there's a house that's still intact. the fast-moving fire has forced thousands of people to evacuate >> 5 people have died from the fires, cadaver dogs and search

crews are searching through the rubble and the death toll is expected to rise. it is safe to say >> that the palisades fire is one of the most destructive natural disasters in the history of los angeles. >> and we are not out of the woods yet down in southern california. we can expect critical fire weather conditions to persist of red flag warnings are in effect until at least tomorrow evening. and another offshore wind event expected next week. those gusty santa ana winds expected to make a return, keeping those conditions dry that could impact the firefight out there in the newsroom. gayle ong kron, 4 news. >> gayle, thank you. just jarring before and after images here, thousands of buildings have been destroyed, talking about north of 10,000 buildings destroyed many of them homes. this is a stretch here. beautiful. beachside homes along the pacific coast highway and you're talking about some of the most valuable real estate in the country that has just been

reduced to a wasteland rubble. holmes says knocked to the ground. california landmarks were also affected. you have some trees and vegetation at the getty villa that burned here. look at that behind that iconic sign the before, of course, over here. fortunately, though, none of the buildings, none of the artwork was damaged. the museum actually had water stored on site for something just like this. and they also took steps to protect structures, including sealing off the galleries to protect valuable pieces of art from smoke damage. meanwhile, the ranch ousted movie star will rogers owned until his death in 1935. look at it now. to the ground except for some chimneys and other structures made out of stone and brick several structures that were standing before the fire are just no longer during the 1920's rogers bought land in santa monica. developing what

is now pacific palisades. and this is what theater palisades looked like before and then during and then after the community theater, which was founded by 3 television writers in the 1960's was fully engulfed in flames tuesday. our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow has been tracking the conditions actually. going back to grant. we have some breaking news at a calabassas. >> we reported on it at the top of the show. that fire is now up to 900 acres. it is raging. evacuation orders are now in effect for that area. officials telling people to get out now. so they thought they had that relatively under control. but obviously the conditions have changed. lawrence, what is going on down there with the get the santa ana tend to ramp overnight and that's what we're seeing happen. expecting to happen. >> throughout the night tonight. so you get in those areas where you get above 1000 feet or so. all of a sudden those winds start gusting 50

plus miles an hour. you get that kind of wind and really it just becomes a time where firefighters are trying to get people out of the way. there's not much you can do to stop it when those fires are raging like that. here are the current wind conditions across the greater los angeles area. you can see fairly light even a little bit sea breeze along the immediate coastline los angeles. but you get over the mountain tops and that's where we're seeing some of those offshore winds beginning to develop and now beginning to pick up as well. some of those gust to 25 29 miles an hour in ontario. so expecting those winds to wrap up overnight tonight, the humidity very interesting is that working out as well. you see downtown los angeles. they've got a seabreeze there. 59 1%. that is great news. that's what you want to see. you get toward chino. we're talking about 7%, of the corona and only 7% riverside. so dry conditions now mixing in over the mountains there in los angeles basin and that route when that offshore wind will likely pick up overnight tonight. so going to be bone dry out there overnight tonight and those offshore winds going to be ramping up dangerous fire

conditions again expected tonight, although it's not going to be a strong as before we've got active fires burning when you get after fires burning and 40 50 mile an hour gusts. that means some dangerous conditions. there. and it continues all the way down further south, expecting some dangerous fire conditions all the way down into the san diego area, expecting some very gusty winds there over the mountain tops as well, hoping for a little bit of a break tomorrow, but they're more strong winds in the forecast in the future. guys are gonna be watching that very closely okay, lawrence, have firefighters, meantime from san francisco there on the front lines right now in los angeles. >> francisco fire department sharing video of its crews working right alongside southern california. firefighters nearly 2 dozen firefighters here from san francisco were sent to la yesterday in addition to crews from alameda and santa clara counties, crews from san mateo county. they're set to arrive in that area tonight. officials say that area firefighters actually could remain in southern california to help fight this fire for

several weeks now. and in addition to the many fire crews from across the bay and other states pg e has sent helicopters down to southern california to help units there battle these fires. the utility sent down to black hawk choppers and 25 teams to help out l a's department of water and power. they're going to put fire retardant on poles and other equipment and make sure that they're safe enough for la screws to restore power to the people there. and when the public sees things like this, all these fires, all these homes gone. a lot of people. >> want to help in some way. of course. >> there are organizations which you can donate, but also the concern for scams out there. but first, rob nesbitt joins us now live in the studio with more on verified relief effort. a rock grant, vicki volunteers are on the ground now from the american red cross. >> working hard to help those who have lost everything from the devastating wildfires in southern california. there are also ways you can help from home.

>> the images of the palace aides and even fires are devastating and what they have left behind books, almost post-apocalyptic. it's why the red cross of northern california has stepped up to help sending a team volunteers to los angeles, including vigil ceo hannah malik. folks are still waiting to hear, you know how things there specific homes. >> and we just want them to know they aren't alone. so we're making sure that the basic needs are being met with feeding and mental health and all of that. right now the red cross has mobilized truckloads of supplies like cots, blankets and water to assist thousands of people at 8 emergency shelters giving people without a home a safe place to stay while they cope with the devastation when it comes to making sure your donations are going to the right place. the american red cross has safeguards in place to help you avoid scams. the fastest and most efficient way to make an impact. is financial donation? the other impact that we're seeing is a blood donations not only with winter weather in other parts of the country, but because of canceled blood drives because of the wildfires here in southern california, there are other ways to help as well. the california fire foundation

is looking for donations to support surviving families of fallen firefighters. gofundme has compiled a list of verified fundraisers for people impacted by the wildfires. spca elese disaster. animal response team is seeking donations to support emergency services such as temporary animal shelters. >> and world central kitchen is providing meals to first responders and evacuees kron four's parent company nexstar has partnered with the american red cross to launch a donation page for wildfire victims in southern california. you can scan the qr code on your screen to make a donation grant. vicki, back to you. >> all right, up next, but thank you for that. among the agencies sending crews to la is the oakland fire department. 12 firefighters have been sent so far in today. they're sending a water tender. they can take all the help they can get. oakland's fire chief shared this information with new members of the city council today also warned them about what could happen if you close fire

stations in oakland as planned to kron four's. dan kerman reports. few in oakland can forget oakland's keller fire. it had all the makings of another firestorm but was quickly contained with little damage. you know, if we hadn't hat. >> a little luck and tremendous amount of support from our region. it would have been catastrophic. but oakland fire chief tim in covington told new members of the city council thursday that even with help from other agencies, a similar event now could and in devastation like los angeles now that the city has closed 2 fire stations when we don't have a full complement of fire service. 3 months ago. we could be looking the same way la looks the to fire stations were shuttered to help close 129 million dollar budget deficit. covington says it's a gamble. the city cannot afford. we have our full complement. we're rolling the dice. we don't have a full complement. we're really playing russian roulette. the closure of stations. 25 28 for

the next 6 months is expected to save the city 5 million dollars. but the closures mean it will take fire crews longer to respond to emergencies per person is having a heart attack. >> or seizure or a structure fire. we could be 10, 12, 15 minutes away because now we're coming from 4 districts. a way to get to that call councilmember rebecca kaplan did offer some hope. >> in the next several weeks and the city will be receiving an unexpected 2.6 million dollars due to greater than expected revenue from events at the oakland arena and coliseum. last year. and so we will be working on item to bring that should oakland share of that money back. >> to to protect restore our fire services and our first nations in oakland. but even if that unexpected event, money is able to be used to reopen one of those 2 fire stations. >> 4 additional ones are slated to close sometime in february. dan kerman kron, 4 news. and will continue

members and they were shot to death. officers say they were called to the house on monarch court around 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon for a welfare check. these folks hadn't been seen in days. police say they forced their way in and found 2 men and 2 women age is 33 to 77 who'd been shot on different areas of the home. they say a semiautomatic handgun was also found near one of the bodies. the case is now being investigated as a homicide. police say that they also served a search warrant at a home on buena crest court in santa say which they say >> is linked to one of the victims. autopsies are scheduled for tomorrow. 2 people have been arrested after police say they stole from the mail truck in south city. officers say the truck was delivering mail on alta mesa drive last week when the suspects went in and stole from it. police say that they used a license plate reader to track down the car used in the burglary and arrested. 32 year-old ceci as a veto. and 35 year-old salvatore alvarado

a day later. police say they recovered boxes of stolen mail and drugs in south city and other bay area cities as well. >> developing news tonight, the sentencing hearing date for the man killed cash founder bob lee has been pushed back. nima, mo, many is hearing was scheduled to happen tomorrow. but now have to wait until february 7th for many was found guilty of stabbing lead to death last month. he faces 16 years to life in prison. take a good look. oakland police are asking for the public's help. they're trying to fan find this missing teen who hasn't seen since the weekend. they say 14 year-old daylin ewing was last spotted on greenridge drive near killer app just after 2.30, saturday afternoon. police say he was wearing a green sweat suit and black crocs. it's about 5, 9, 130 pounds. anyone with any info about where he might be is asked to call oakland police. our weather time here as we get a live look

beautiful view from the top of mount tam up ice and lawrence is here to give us an update. yeah, no rain out there in the middle of the wettest part of the season right now. i'm going to say dry for the foreseeable future out there. so. >> offshore winds in place. we're gonna see little change as we head in toward tomorrow. couple clouds going to try to factor in, but not many going to see some of those clouds move in the far northern california, the bay area staying dry, no getting around that. and those winds gonna start to ramp up again as we get to saturday out there right now. dry as can be. we've had that a beautiful day of weather. some record breaking temperatures around the bay are numbers looking like this today. it was 65 68 degrees. i should say in downtown san francisco. 68 also in oakland, 73 degrees in san jose. not a record but warm there 70 and the more 73 in concord. 78 degrees in santa rosa. amazing. 69 in half moon bay, few we had once at the oakland museum, some record to 70 degrees there tied the beat. the record set back in 2015 redwood city at a record of 75 degrees in sfo.

71 also a record here in the bay area. but tomorrow we may not see those record temperatures, but it's going to be nice. just can't find any rain that is staying well to the north doppler radar showing you skies dry all across the state of california and even further north and that we've got what's going on as a blocking ridge out there. and that ridge is dominating our weather pattern right now and taking all the storms up into canada, then you can see it just really drops down to southern california. low-pressure on the other side that's really generating a lot of the wind. overall, i think the pattern that's going to stay dry, the winds they're going ramp up again tomorrow. not a bad day. you can see a little bit of sea breeze kicking in. that's a good thing. but then as we get to saturday, those offshore winds kick back in planning to be a very blustery day around the bay area on saturday. guys, back to you. all but today, many around the country honor the life and the legacy of former president jimmy carter. funeral services were held in the nation's capital today as well as in his home state of georgia where he was laid to rest next to his wife, former first lady, rosalynn carter. our washington correspondent, basil john reports.

the company says the cuts are going to be based on performance. not clear when the layoffs will start last january. microsoft cut almost 2000 jobs in its gaming division. >> on his first full day in office, san francisco mayor daniel lurie has announced an immediate citywide hiring freeze. he says in an effort to get the city's budget deficit under control. the mayor also directed departments to realign programming in spending with the city's priorities with a focus on evidence and proven results. this includes pausing new contracts or programs that have not yet been signed or implemented. >> doesn't walgreens stores are shutting down in san francisco. the company says higher rent costs staffing and supply needs are some of the reasons why. here's a look at locations that will be closing down next month. one of them is on market street where banco brown an unarmed 24 year-old black transgender person was shot to death by a
