>> now at 11, the death toll climbs to 10 from the destructive wildfires continuing to rage across la county. thousands of homes and businesses have been burned it to rubble. thank you for joining us here on kron for news at 11. i'm noelle bellow and i'm dan thorn. investigators did not say which fires of the 4 newly formed. >> deaths were related to, but we know at least 2 deaths from

the pacific palisades fired. at least 5 are the result of the even fire and altadena the 2 largest of the 5 fires which are burning in la county tonight. that's right. we are also continuing to follow this fire fight as it goes on tonight. lapd is confirming it is investigating one of the fires, the most recent fire that broke out this afternoon. >> as arson, the palisades fire, however, has burned nearly 20,000 acres since it sparked tuesday morning. cal fire says it's just 6% contained. 2 deaths there. dozens of blocks have been decimated. at least 5 churches, a synagogue, 7 schools have been lost in the pacific palisades fire. the eaton fire burning in altadena has ripped through nearly 14,000 acres. at least 5 people confirmed dead. there it is. still, though, set 0% contained. >> in the meantime, though, an arson investigation, of

course, is underway with the kind of fire. this is video that showing police taking a suspect into custody and connection with possibly starting that fire, which burned close to 1000 acres in la and ventura counties. here's the lapd saying about the investigation. >> what we know right now is that incident occurred started here and about 20 minutes, 3 minutes later, suspect was detained over woodland hills. i citizens. so someone purposely set the kind of fire. at this time. that's what we believe this. >> we know how or why they did that. i don't. is this a crime scene right yes. if everything goes off as being key, that's being investigated as a. >> well, that kind of fire is currently at 35% containment on the devastation in los angeles is so widespread overwhelming that one thing that's giving people hope, though, is seeing the hard work from firefighters who have traveled to southern california from across the state and also across the country. now, kron 4 sarah stinson has the very latest on this unprecedented fire fight.

>> it's hard to put it into words. i mean, it's just absolutely devastating. and our community such tight, wonderful community. and it's just very if pacific palisades resident left nearly speechless after seeing the destruction of the palisades fire. >> for the first time on thursday, video from above shows dozens of blocks decimated by the fire. the palisades fire broke out tuesday morning. an unprecedented winds fanned those flames across pacific palisades and malibu. at least 2 people have died in this fire that's now burned more than 19,000 acres. and officials believe the number of damaged structures is several 1000. the damage in malibu is quite extensive. oceanfront homes and businesses can be seen burned to the ground. everything is destroyed. i mean, it's it's like it's like a new town. it's just. >> and nia lead, it's like a war of words here.

>> alec gillis tried to save his girlfriend's home, but sadly, it too, was lost my heart. my prayers go out for everyone that was really affected and so much of. >> but people lost in these houses is. somebody replaceable. >> and 5 people have died in the eaton fire, including 82 year-old rodney nickerson and altadena his daughter cameco says he had been through fires before and thought he could survive this one to you said that he felt this was not pass over and that he would be here. he's been out >> as long as i've been living my whole life. came here home as a child. born in kaiser permanente and sense that they brought me here to this house. and i've been here my whole life with him. i heard a commotion, oakland native and now los angeles resident shane reagan was keeping a close eye on the neighboring fires when a fire sparked wednesday close to his home near the hollywood hills and literally a mile from here on the hill. >> are just shy in flames.

just be an increasingly thankfully. fire crews stop the spread of the sunset fire. reagan says this put him on high alert. >> and out of precaution, he's staying with family members elsewhere. so you can do is really just stay attentive in. try to adapt quickly consider. >> you know, evacuating yourself. >> you truly never think it's going to happen to you until it does. so it's important to state prepared, but i think, you know, this fire is really hitting home for everyone in the bay area. everybody knows someone actually each person at this desk. yeah. someone who has lost literally everything. yeah. and i think that, you know, you said talk about preparation. it is one thing. you know, we haven't had rain since the start of the year necessarily, but >> we got so much. that's great. however, this is such a reminder, too. make sure you are prepared if something like this does happen here at home, you know, have your go bag it can happen. natural disasters do and can happen. you not not on this scale. this ments.

again, as we said last hour, you know, it's just going to be hard for people to even come to terms with all that they have lost for a long, long road ahead. and i think people here in the bay area can sympathize cause a lot of people here there. itself. sarah, thank you. >> well, los angeles mayor karen bass is facing some backlash tonight over recent budget cuts that impacted the city's fire department said the budget cuts did not have an impact on the city's response to these fires and her focus will remain on helping los angeles rebuild when the fires are out. >> we will do a deep dive. we will look at what worked. we will look at what didn't work and we will let you know until then my focus is on the tv screens behind you that are showing devastation that has continued. >> just a month before the devastating palisades fire broke out. the la fire chief actually warned in a memo these budget cuts would impact the department's ability to respond to large-scale emergencies such as this.

>> firefighters from san francisco on the front lines in los angeles tonight, sffd sharing video of its crews working alongside at southern california. firefighters nearly 2 dozen firefighters from san francisco were sent to the los angeles yesterday. in addition to crews from alameda and santa clara counties. crist from san mateo county also arrived earlier this evening. officials say bay area firefighters could remain in the area for several weeks. they're definitely in need of the help. we want to turn things over to kron. first. chief meteorologist lawrence karnow for a check on those wind conditions down in southern california morning. yeah, can't even imagine trying to fires in conditions like that. i mean, it's almost nothing you can do in the winds start gusting. >> over 40 miles an hour, boy, just almost have to get out of the way. they're just trying to rescue people. and those winds are once again ramping up outside. we've seen some gusts last few hours over 40 miles per hour in the malibu area there gusting to 36 right

now in ontario. so there you go. the winds now beginning to pick up a scent is usually do during the nighttime hours. those winds really start to ramp up so a very dangerous fire conditions continuing there for tonight. humidity, as you might expect, drying out again, you're looking at 9% relative humidity and a plan right now, 12 in chino, 10%, ontario of moisture, a little bit higher in downtown los angeles. that had a little bit of a seabreeze right along the coastline today. but red flag warnings continue enough for the greater los angeles area and they'll be in place through tonight and its tomorrow as well as we're going to see those very gusty winds overnight tonight that they'll begin to really calm down as we head toward the middle of the day tomorrow. but of the red flag warnings stretch all the way down into the san diego area to we've got a long way to go. no rain is in the forecast and more wind is in the forecast for then. we'll talk more about that coming up few minutes. lawrence, thank you. new at 11 california insurance commissioner ricardo, lara, has just issued a mandatory moratorium prohibiting insurance companies.

>> from canceling policies and renewals for one year. the moratorium applies to homes within the palisades and eaton fire burn areas as well as adjourning zip codes near the fire zones. the rule will expire on january 7th of next year. >> warriors head coach steve kerr is among those who have lost memories. his childhood home burned down in the palisades fire this week. he spoke today saying despite the devastating loss, his 90 year-old mother is safe. >> spending been tough made families find my mom is in good hands and about better house is gone. and you know, so i've been on the phone with my siblings quite a you family calls just with my mom and she's but she's got time. lot of support and friends. so she's safe and sound. but yeah, that's my hometown. all my friends who are from there

pretty much they've all lost, lost their homes or their family homes. child homes are all high schools gone. town looks like it. just been completely wiped out surreal and devastating. just in to our newsroom tonight, the family of the uc berkeley football player is among those who have now lost their homes. >> in los angeles because of the several devastating fires, cal football says the family of freshman player camden jones lost. he's home and belongings in the evening. fire him. all people, though, were able to evacuate there is now a gofundme that is set up for the family posted on cal football's social media. >> if you're looking to help those who have been affected, there are dozens of organizations to donate to the red cross salvation army. the los angeles, a fire department foundation are a few notable ones as kron four's. rob nesbitt reports, though, there is some concern over scams. >> volunteers are on the ground from the american red

cross working to help those who have lost everything from the devastating wildfires in southern california. there are also ways you can help the images of the palace aides and even fires are devastating and what they have left behind books almost post-apocalyptic. it's why the red cross of northern california has stepped up to help sending a team volunteers to los angeles, including vigil ceo hannah malik. folks are still waiting to hear, you know how things are with their specific homes. >> and we just want them to know they aren't alone. so we're making sure that the basic needs are being met with feeding and mental health and all of that. right now the red cross has mobilized truckloads of supplies like cots, blankets and water to assist thousands of people at 8 emergency shelters giving people without a home a safe place to stay while they cope with the devastation when it comes to making sure your donations are going to the right place. the american red cross has safeguards in place to help you avoid scams. the fastest and most efficient way to make an impact to step making a financial donation. the other impact that we're seeing is a blood donations not only with winter weather in other parts of the country,

>> new details tonight about the 4 people found dead inside a home in santa rosa. police say the victims or family members and they were shot to death. top seas will be scheduled for tomorrow. >> officers say they were called to the house on monarch court around 3 yesterday afternoon for a welfare check because they hadn't been seen in days. police say forced entry into the house they found 2 men and 2 women ages. 33 to 77 with gunshot wounds in different areas of the home. they also say a semiautomatic handgun was found near one of the bodies.

police say they did serve a search warrant at a home on buena crossed a court in san jose which they say is linked to one of the victims but did not give any other details. well, on his first full day in office, san francisco mayor daniel lurie has announced an immediate citywide. >> hiring freeze in effort to get the city's budget deficit under control. the mayor also directing departments to realign programming and spending with the city's priorities with a focus on evidence and proven results. this includes pausing new contracts or programs that have not yet been signed or implemented. in the meantime, the woman was injured at lori's inauguration party in chinatown last night. she was escorted out by police officers and holding some kind of paper towel on her head to put pressure on on a wound. our crew says that she apparently got hit by a firecracker. we have reached out to san francisco police for more information. but they didn't have any. we also reached out to mayor lori's office for comment, but has this report haven't heard back. the fire show was put on

by lorries campaign as a part last night's celebration. >> well, this walgreens where 24 year-old brown was shot to death by a security guard during a shoplifting incident in 2023. is one of several that we shutting down next month. walgreens announced today 12 locations in san francisco will be closing next month. that includes locations on terror of all noriega streets, geary and polk street. >> for a >> the closures. walgreens is citing what the company says is increased costs associated with rent, staffing and supply needs. >> drivers and alameda and you keep their eyes open for a new traffic signal. it's located on wilma chan way and atlantic avenue and includes a protected bike signal. that means drivers attempting to turn right to wilma chan need to wait for a green light for making that turn and right on reds are now prohibited at this intersection.

>> let's get you a check of your forecast tonight. taking a live look at downtown san francisco across the bay from our mount tam it's pretty clear. clear night out there was really nice. warm one here in the city and also all across the bay area. how about this rain season, right? yeah. what i get a season, lack a wild out there. a lot of part of december january. just dry as can be outside. >> it's going to stay that way for quite a while. now, as just does not want to break , s- down. but making for some beautiful conditions around the bay area. record-breaking heat outside clears could be out along the coastline right now temperatures today. yeah. was 68 degrees almost 70 in san francisco. 68 in oakland to 73 in san jose. 70 in livermore, 73 in concord about santa rosa. can you believe that 78 degrees today on a winter's day in santa rosa? 69 in half moon bay. so that was a record and santa rosa. but we did have some other records to be found. oakland museum, they checked in the 70. that

was a record redwood city. also record of 75 71 a record at sfo out the door. right now, though, temperatures are cooling off. 46 degrees in half moon bay. warm though comparison. 63 in pacifica. 55 in san francisco. 49 in napa. then you've got 69 in saline and they must be seeing some pretty good. gusty winds there. and that brings some warm air down from up above. but high pressure in control. look at the storms there. well, to the north, all the way up into canada, all of california, this pretty much is bone dry. and of course, southern california has hardly seen any rainfall at all since the season began. so here we go. the jetstream still sending all those storms tracking well to the north at the same time as high pressure builds in, got the low pressure, the east and now you get those offshore winds flowing right toward the coastline that dry hot air moving in and that brought with the dangerous fire conditions now looks like and the forecast. we're going to see some of the weak system kind of slide over the top of the ridge. and this is where

it gets dangerous. and you're thinking, oh, well, that's done. we're going to see that high pressure go away. but what happens that dives? the south high pressure builds in behind and all of a sudden we start talking about those offshore winds again into saturday into sunday. looks like another nice day. just watch those clouds pretty much disappear. then another area of low pressure is going to develop off the coastline. this is going to get interesting next week where this all sets up. it sets up just wrong. we could be talking about some very strong offshore winds in southern california once again and high fire danger. let's hope that doesn't happen. temperatures tomorrow. 60's couple 70's outside next couple days. we're going to see plenty of sunshine throughout. looks like high pressure in control just doesn't want to go away now that it made a home here and it's gonna stick around for at least the 7 days and probably a lot longer. >> that's concerning. >> yes, it is concerning, especially as us yet because it's right in the middle of our our wettest month of the so quickly, right? it's hard to make up when you don't get the rain that you usually expect in january to get to normal for this time of year. but you never know whether strange things can always switch gears real quickly. make it what the 2nd half. yeah. all right. thanks, lauren. thanks. all right.
