tv   KRON 4 News at 7am  KRON  January 10, 2025 7:00am-8:01am PST

7:00 am
>> right now, the kron 4 morning news. a ring of fire around los angeles county has massive wildfires scorched the area. 10 people killed thousands of buildings destroyed in a person is in police custody for suspected arson. plus, concerns here at home consent crews to help in southern california. the fire chief warns a city struggling with the closure of 2 fire stations. and those wildfires are triggering and insurance crisis after the california, largest insurer left the market last year. we'll tell you how the bay area. could be impacted. it said. >> a lot to get to enforce a lot of bad news this morning. but let's start off on a good note. we can say it's friday going into the weekend and check the weather for us. the weather is mild. good morning, john. yeah, yesterday was warm
7:01 am
and today we're starting with the sunshine. some of us in the 50's this morning. setting us up for a another mild weekend ahead of us. maybe a little too mild for this time of year. we're looking outside happen, bake or out there at the coastline. if you do want to get out to the coast today, it's a good day to do so. of course, all eyes are still on southern california. high wind warnings, red flag warnings in effect into early evening. tonight. we actually go back into wind advisories but only for upper elevations this weekend, winds gusting as high as 30 miles per hour. so not exceptionally windy, but a noticeable breeze. nonetheless. now we are going to be looking at temperatures of eventually back up in the 60's to 70's. go ahead, throw the jackets on for now. palo alto fairfield, fairfax, among a few spots that are down in the 30's this morning later on today. daytime highs will reach the 60's to 70's likely not as many records broken as yesterday, but still a warm and comfortable one right now. all right.
7:02 am
>> it starts to go up a little bit. they just clear that accident. now we're at about 14 minutes traveling into the city this morning. other bridges look fine. 11 minutes. no major delays there. wire san mateo bridge are at about 15 minutes. the golden gate bridge. 21 minute ride darya. james, back to you. thank you. let's get back to our coverage of the southern california wildfires burning in los angeles county. my gosh. look at the glow of the flames here and the big news is the death toll has doubled so 10 people confirmed killed related to these wildfires and 10,000 structures have burned. >> we do know at least to those deaths were from the pacific palisades fire. 5 deaths were connected to the eaton fire in altadena. we have a map showing where all these fires are located and you can see that basically former ring around los angeles county, 5 of the blazes are the biggest ones burning right now. hundreds of acres charred thousands of structures damaged. and you can see all
7:03 am
those small red dots. those are the spot fires that have been sparked by those embers raining down on the area. let's update you on the biggest of the fires. la pd, by the way, has arrested a suspected arsonist for their potential involvement in starting what's called the candidates fire that broke out late yesterday afternoon, burning homes near calabassas and west hills. and this is video of la pd taking that suspect into custody. we're told right now that people who live in the area spotted a man trying to light a fire. they held him down until police arrived. the lapd provided an update on their investigation. here's what they had to say. >> what we know right now is that incident occurred started here and about 20 minutes, 3 minutes later, suspect was detained over woodland hills. why citizens? so someone purposely set the kind of fire? at this time. that's what we believe this. >> we know how or why they did that. i do. is this a crime scene right yes. if everything
7:04 am
goes off as being key, that's being investigated. >> well, right now, cal fire's reporting that the kind of fire has burned more than 900 acres. it's currently 35% contained. firefighters say its forward progress, though, has been stopped. so at least some good news on that front. meantime, in northern los angeles county, the lydia fire >> has burned about 400 acres. that one, though, is 75% contained. so that's the best news that we can tell you at this point. here's a picture that was posted wednesday afternoon of the smoke rising from that fire, which is about 50 miles north of the city of l a this is from our sister station, ktla cal fire's latest data shows the hurst fire in sylmar is about 800 acres now and it's got better containment as well. 37% contained. you can see crews here hitting it from above, trying to get that blaze under control. it broke out tuesday
7:05 am
evening. the deadly eaton fire burning near altadena is responsible for now more than 13,000 acres. this fire at 0% containment. you can see been so devastating. this is the one that whipped up with 100 mile per hour. wind gusts that happened tuesday night. and just give you an idea of the acreage and one woman who lost her home in the fire again, thousands of homes have been burned. let's hear what she has to say. people are kind of like a what we do next. we do next. like again, there's some people without houses. housing starts at don't home insurance. don't know what to do. >> so i think this is a direction to know which way to turn, which way to go. what do we do next? >> and now let's look at the other big fire, which is the palisades fire, which is nearing 20,000 acres. the containment at 6% this morning. yeah. at this point we've got a lot clearly firefighting efforts underway to try and get that under
7:06 am
control. some neighbors in the area say they can't really >> comprehend what they've seen so far. >> it's sort of mind boggling and numbing and it's like what you see on tv and now. >> you're in the middle of it. it's really just tragic. just really gut-wrenching. >> it feels like the world stopping right now. >> all right. speaking the world stopping 705, right now. and i don't know. may have 2 minutes ago. you know, you are reading a story. i felt the studio shake. yeah. we had earthquake. not a huge one, but a close one. we've got john here in the weather center with a look at what >> was causing that ground shake for here a minute ago. yeah. both rain and are you looked at each other? they said earthquake we are looking at that quake centered nearby daly city on the peninsula. >> minor quake, 3.5 here. but a lot of people feeling it right here in the studio hearing a little bit of a rattle now. this occurred just moments ago 07:00:02am, again
7:07 am
nearby daly city reports so far of just light shaking. but again, if you did feel shaking just after 7 o'clock itself, especially for those of you on the peninsula around burlingame daly, city pacifica, areas like this closer to the san andreas fault right there. it is about 6 miles away from daly city, the epicenter of this quake. but again, a 3.5 magnitude or right after 07:00am this morning, feeling it right here in san francisco in the studio. and if you to let us know about that. but some minor shaking for sure. very short lives to it wasn't very long. just a quick little quick little jolt here. all right, john, thank you very much. 707, is the time. >> back more headlines now. and among the agencies sending crews to las angeles is the open fire department. 12 firefighters have been sent so far on thursday. the fire chief damon covington warned the oakland city council the closing 2 fire stations to help close that 129 million dollar budget deficit is a gamble. the city really can't
7:08 am
afford. he says had those 2 fire stations closed earlier this week had if had they been shuttered during october's caldor fire. well, oakland could very well be seeing the same devastation that la is dealing with right now. >> when we don't have our full compliment of fire service. 3 months ago, we could be looking the same way la looks per person is having a heart attack or seizure port, a structure fire. we could be 10, 12, 15 minutes away our come from 4 districts a way to get to that call. >> the city is receiving a little more than 2 and a half million dollars in the next several weeks from that, sale of the revenue from the sale of the oakland coliseum and arena last year. but even if that event that's alemany is able to save one of the 2 fire stations for more are slated to close in february 708, right now. and the devastation in los angeles is just so overwhelming. >> one thing that's giving people hope, though, is seeing the hard work from
7:09 am
firefighters. yeah, and some of them i from here in the bay area heading down there to help out. >> in the efforts, kron 4 sarah stinson gives us a closer >> it's hard to put it into words. i mean, it's just absolutely devastating. and our community such tight, wonderful community. and it's just very if pacific palisades resident left nearly speechless after seeing the destruction of the palisades fire. >> for the first time on thursday, video from above shows dozens of blocks decimated by the fire. the palisades fire broke out tuesday morning. an unprecedented winds fanned those flames across pacific palisades and malibu. at least 2 people have died in this fire that's now burned more than 19,000 acres. and officials believe the number of damaged structures several 1000. the damage in malibu is quite extensive. oceanfront homes and businesses can be seen burned to the ground. everything is destroyed. i mean, it's it's like it's like a new town. it's just.
7:10 am
>> and nia lead, it's like a war of words here. >> alec gillis tried to save his girlfriend's home, but sadly, it too, was lost my heart. my prayers go out for everyone that was really affected and so much of. >> but people lost in these houses is. somebody replaceable. >> and 5 people have died in the eaton fire, including 82 year-old rodney nickerson in altadena. his daughter cameco says he had been through fires before and thought he could survive this one to you said that he felt this was not pass over and that he would be here. he's been out >> as long as i've been living my whole life. i came here home as a child. born in kaiser permanente and sense. they brought me here to this house and i've been here my whole life with him. i heard a commotion, oakland, native and now los angeles resident shane reagan was keeping a close eye on the neighboring fires when a fire sparked wednesday close to his home near the hollywood hills and literally a mile from here on the hill.
7:11 am
>> are just shy in flames. just been increasingly thankfully, fire crews stop the spread of the sunset fire. reagan says this put him on high alert. >> and out of precaution, he's staying with family members elsewhere. so you can do is really just stay attentive try to adapt quickly and consider. >> you know, evacuating yourself. i'm sara stinson reporting kron. 4 news. >> 7.10, is the time right now and we have a consumer alert for you this morning. experts say the destruction of all of those homes in southern california could drastically drive up the insurance premiums we pay here in the bay area. one way we're feeling the effects as well. kron four's will tran live in orinda to explain who will. >> according to insurance experts more than likely our premiums will go up and we would be lucky to still have our insurance coverage after. >> all of this orinda knows that all too well because last year state farm dropped about 2000 residents in this
7:12 am
particular community. as far as los angeles, the fires continue to burn pacific palisades just a couple of months ago, state farm dropped about 1600 customers. i gotta tell you from 2020 to 2022, 2.8 million californians lost their insurance because the carriers refused to renew them. and then in los angeles county, about 531,000 people lost their insurance over that particular span as well. what could happen moving forward is that will continue to happen. also, if you have insurance coverage, your insurance obviously needs to cover for all the other people who lost their homes. so your premiums could go up as well. so big dilemma for california and one more bullet point for people pointing to california saying how expensive it is to live here and why so many people are moving out. back to you. all right. thanks a lot. well.
7:13 am

7:16 am
that i look to you. i heard though. i did hear the little rumble, a feel-like, but hey, we upgraded at 3.7, 702, this morning. so it's right after 07:00am. maybe that alarm went off at 7. and then 2 minutes later, you're like, what was that? >> well, that was that shaking their now, the epicenter of this quake was just off shore of the san francisco zoo. so just west of san francisco in daly city. so especially people in the western neighborhoods of the city. we've got a report from s oy state saying they felt it. we are also looking at the depth of this quake pretty deep, but it is definitely something that people on the peninsula fell. usgs reports people as far south as half moon bay feeling it as far east as alameda and up towards point richmond as well. but most of those reports really concentrated on the peninsula. and in san francisco itself, again, this quake in the vicinity of the san andreas fault itself. so, guys, that was definitely something that maybe even jolted a couple of us awake this morning. >> all right. thanks a lot, john. and now we're talking about who felt charlie did one

7:20 am
a lot stronger than we did here in the city. and so i about all bet the reactions from people around the bay area be varying just like that. i do. when you go, we're now. all right. 7.19, is a time right now. we'll be right >> just take it in the studio as well. and a lot of other people that work here, too. so they felt it so grateful that everybody safe. a check on barton. don't see them slowing down trains because of the quake. so that's a good news. really good sign there. however, have an accident, 7, 8, 8, 8 our parkway in fremont. some things a little slow, 80 other highways here on a friday. look great. nice and light for you. bay bridge. last hour we had an accident there. that's clear. 12 minute ride heading into the city this morning. while richmond center fell bridge about 12 minutes. and let's get a look at the golden gate bridge or if you are to be taken that no major delays. 34 minute ride along highway 4, antioch in to conquer. all right, guys, we'll send it back to you. thank you. 7.20, right now and for your money.

7:30 am
>> 7.29 right now and we're checking out the weather and talking about the earthquake that hit at good morning, john. yeah, you may have felt it. i know a lot of us did this morning, especially those of you closer to the san andreas fault itself on the west side of francisco, daly city and down the peninsula little bit. although we see reports more and more on the usgs of people all across the bay area feeling this quake.
7:31 am
now, the epicenter of this quake was just northwest of the san francisco zoo, which is very close in proximity to the san andreas fault itself, which you can see right there runs in yellow past san francisco. >> and then down right along highway 2.80. now the san andreas fault dives beneath the pacific ocean right around mussel rock. we had a caller right on skyline drive there in daly city right next to the fault line who said it was prolonged shaking and some actually pretty strong shaking, too. and then just moments ago, another caller in the sunset district saying much the same thing. so some of that stronger shaking occurring right there in the western edge of san francisco down through daly city. as far as the usgs is concerned, a lot of heavy shaking around pacifica too. so areas in proximity in especially right along the san andreas fault, really reporting that heavier shaking eastern at a san francisco, not quite as dramatic of shaking comparatively, but this is a 3.7 quake here. it was right
7:32 am
at 07:00:02pm. i know a lot of people have alarms set right at 07:00am so may have been just as you were starting out of in this morning. again, that was just northwest of the san francisco zoo very close proximity to the san andreas fault. with that heaviest of shaking occurring for most reports on the peninsula. although the usgs reporting people saying they felt as far south as the south bay, too. so if you did feel that shaking briefer some but prolonged for others, especially if you're on the peninsula and the west side of the city. caryn james. well, as quick nothing for james and vanessa and san francisco called in because she felt right. good morning, vanessa. >> good morning. all right. so what we're doing and what did it feel like? yeah. i would i was coming. >> the living room to watch you guys. i'm with a cup of coffee all the sudden the windows violently started shaking like the last caller said we went across the street from the as well as the al you need. and so typically a like
7:33 am
the train. but today, so a lot i mean, you never know what's going to happen next. so you kind of a great, just tough. >> into the living room, just waiting for to come on the television, the coffee spill in did anything fall of shelves, know, to think fully we have a bunch of toys sold in the house and >> everything it seems to be intact. the puppy got a little crazy from it. but >> the past week, the puppy did the puppy know ahead of time like dogs seem to sometimes have this premonition right before it strikes? >> she park, but then just became kind of crazy. you know, like she's been out in the wind it >> interest to animals know. it was weird. >> and if any damage at all? i mean, you look at sometimes you can look air sealing in the wall and use a little, something like that because you've been obviously a number of quakes when your location.
7:34 am
>> yeah, i nothing that i noticed so far kind of dark home. so maybe have to check that out later. boyfriend that she didn't it whatsoever. but i like you're seeing that the games and even feel it. >> that. but maybe it's a guy thing i john didn't see that. but are both here in the student? >> yeah, you're not crazy. we all felt it too. >> and it and and we talk about this all the time. do you have a go kit and all that or is this a reminder like on got to do that? >> i know i have a backpack that i've for that. now all the little things that i may need. i mean, we live by the beach. so, yeah. couple months ago when the earthquake happened you know, you're just ready are. to run from the how jackets while you're really on changeup. the granola bars a >> begin more about that. a good but you're doing better than me. i still still have a
7:35 am
go bag. how many times will be done? i know it and i still don't have a go bag. i'm not alone. so maybe this is the time more and more people will be as prepared as you are. vanessa. >> thanks a lot prepared. but, you know at the yeah, thanks for adding to the show. appreciate all the wonderful, frightening. later. but by all right. >> well, from that coverage, let's switch and get you quickly updated on what's happening in the southern portions of the state because as we know there's on wildfires there. and if you're looking to help those affected by the wildfires are arlen number of organizations that are available that you can donate to the red cross, for instance, salvation army, the la fire department foundation is also available to just a few of the nonprofits that are legitimate that, you know, you can donate to and trust that it's going to get what's going on for a drive-in has been has been talking about that. volunteers are on the ground from the american red cross working to help those who haoe lost everything from the devastating wildfires in southern california. >> there are also ways you can
7:36 am
help the images of the palace aides and even fires are devastating and what they have left behind books almost post-apocalyptic. it's why the red cross of northern california has stepped up to help sending 18 volunteers los angeles, including vigil ceo hannah malik. folks are still waiting to hear, you know, how things are with their specific homes. >> and we just want them to know they aren't alone. so we're making sure that the basic needs are being met with feeding and mental health and all of that. right now the red cross has mobilized truckloads of supplies like cots, blankets and water to assist thousands of people at 8 emergency shelters giving people without a home a safe place to stay while they cope with the devastation when it comes to making sure your donations are going to the right place. the american red cross has safeguards in place to help you avoid scams, the fastest and most efficient way to make an impact to step making a financial donation. the other impact that we're seeing is a blood donations not only with winter weather in other parts of the country, but because of canceled blood drives because of the wildfires here in southern california, there are other
7:37 am
ways to help as well. the california fire foundation is looking for donations to support surviving families of fallen firefighters. gofundme has compiled a list of verified fundraisers for people impacted by the wildfires. spca elese disaster. animal response team is seeking donations to support emergency services such as temporary animal shelters. >> and world central kitchen is providing meals to first responders and evacuees. kron four's parent company nexstar has partnered with the american red cross to launch a donation page for wildfire victims in southern california. you can scan the qr code to make a donation reporting from the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt. kron. 4 news. >> and really hits home how you can help people like in southern california with their disaster. when we have we had this morning at 702, earthquake. and it just shows you how close we all are, you know, to needing that help. luckily, this wasn't a huge quake, but a lot of people felt it. yeah, we've been appreciating everybody calling in to let us know what it felt like for them when it struck.
7:38 am

>> 7.41 is the time right now. we're following what's happening in southern california and because of the wildfires, a lot of animals have been driven from their homes. yeah. and so a lot of resources here in the bay area are looking to help out the spca, for instance, says that animal shelter space is limited. >> so they're doing what they can to kind of move the animals round. kron four's joey horta is live in nevada where an animal rescue group is on a mission to help jelly. >> darya and they're really trying to make a difference out here. it's called loves legacy rescue and they are an agency and they are nonprofit,
7:43 am
i should say. that helps put half of foster dogs into foster homes here in marin county. and so one of the things they're doing with the money that they've raises buying supplies for those animals, things like this, you know, of course they need dog food down with so many evacuee animals impacted. they also need some bowls as well. some leashes. >> and then some crates to put them in as they get those animals out of there. and take a look at this video. you know, we've seen so homes destroyed. so many people had to evacuate and a lot of the pets and up. it added shelters there. again, the running out of space for that. so it's been devastating and their owners have nowhere to go. and so the pats don't either. so urgent need for those supplies that we just showed you to take care of these animals. amanda davis is one of the rescuers here. >> it's just it's devastating. it's heartbreaking. there's so
7:44 am
i wish i could say that every single one of them, i hope that other people step up and kind can help any way they can. >> you can donate on loves legacy rescue dot com. they also need people to help foster. they plan to bring dogs back from the fire zone in los angeles this weekend. and so far they told us that over the last year that they helped rescue and find homes for 300 dogs here in marin county. they're hoping to add to that number in the next couple of days. back to you. ok? thanks a lot joy, 7.44. is the time now. let's get the latest on the weather. >> obviously, we're keeping a keen eye on the situation here and down. so always what's going on, john? yeah, we're obviously talking about weight. >> that so many people felt across the bay area. >> that quake was just at the very start of the hour here, right at 70 am. and if you felt it a little bit stronger,
7:45 am
there's a good likelihood that you were in closer proximity to the san andreas fault itself, especially right around the san francisco zoo. now the fault runs right up the peninsula and eventually makes its way right under water right around this area called mussel rock and our reports from viewers are saying that right around that spot, right there is where they felt it. well, that is appropriate because it was center just northwest of the zoo just off shore of san francisco itself. shaking was light and brief or parts of the bay area, especially further away from the fall. but for those of you a little bit closer, right around 702, you might have felt that jolt a little bit longer and it might have been a little scary for some of you, too. we haven't had any reports of any major aftershocks or anything since then. this is a magnitude 3.7, pretty minor shaking for most of the bay. a little bit stronger, though, right around southwest san francisco, daly, city and those are the areas that we've had. the reports of the strongest shaking, the most

scary reactions from some people watching this morning. now, mount tam right here, a little bit of shaking. but that's because of the wind. this wind been a huge problem. of course, for the past week, we've had a dry offshore wind for the bay, but that same dry, offshore wind, which was so significant days ago in the la metro is beginning to but we still do have those high wind warnings and we do have red flag warnings until the evening tonight. we're actually going back under wind advisories for upper elevations of the bay. and that's because of some stronger winds that will be aloft. so you won't feel it so much at the surface as you will hire up these yellow and orange gradients on the map are indicating extreme fire danger. you'll see less and less of them as we move on into the weekend, a bit of a breather for southern california's first, a stronger winds go, although it does look likely that winds will be picking up into the beginning of next week, could even smell a little bit of smoke down in the south bay at times this afternoon, some of that wildfire smoke has made its
7:47 am
way a bit further northward. we will see a northerly wind kicking it out, though. so should be something that we deal with much this weekend. our impact from smoke has been very minimal so far winds today, as i mentioned, peaking at around 30 miles per hour. most of us in urban areas will be feeling lighter. winds compared to that. so why do we have another offshore wind events into next week? what we've got yet another cut off low that drifts across the region takes a different path from that last one, though. so winds will be brief but definitely impacting different areas. it does look like southern california shouldn't have as bad of an impact as what we saw from that last low pressure. now 60's for your highs for most to san francisco today. a few 50's out along the coastline. all in all, this warm trend of weather continues today. so warm. we broke records yesterday. redwood city got to 75 yesterday. today will be in the 60's low 70's for the south bay, though, san jose, you'll be at 72 degrees. 60's continuing to the east bay
