9:00 am
>> morning and thanks for waking up with us on a friday. i'm darya and james 09:00am. the sun is up. the winds. thankfully for us, sir. nice and calm, which show we're glad to have all those are lisette surprising a lot of people got this morning 07:00am john. yeah, we've got a lot to talk about this morning in the jolt included in that, especially if you are on the peninsula close to the san andreas fault, that's western sf in daly city down to pacifica. >> yeah. probably felt it just after 07:00am. that is that 3.7 earthquake. we're talking about reports from several 1000 people all across the bay area to the usgs that they felt minor shaking. but for residents of daly, city and the western neighborhoods of sf, you felt it a little bit
9:01 am
harder than the rest of us. not a lot of activity since then. so just that one quick jolt right there just after 07:00am southern california. it has been a prolonged very hard few days with this fire danger continuing. we still have red flag warnings and high wind warnings, although they are set to expire today. we have high wind watches going into effect this weekend for upper elevations. winds gusting as high as 30 miles per hour here locally as of right now and really at the surface, wind shouldn't be a huge problem. so a favorable weekend for getting outside enjoying. i mean, we're looking at way above average afternoon highs ahead of us. right now. we're 40's and 50's later on today. it's going to be 60's to 70's for most of us with temperatures very similar to yesterday. what news? no major of our delays or disruptions because of that quake. and we're always looking to see if that's a factor. >> or it is look great right now. 9 and a wry traveling on the bay bridge law. 8 minutes on the richmond center fell.
9:02 am
the mateo bridge puts us at about 15 and the golden gate bridge. if you're going to hop on that 20 minute ride. 37 to the tolls. all regions. back to you. thanks to live now. let's get to the very latest with the earthquake. as john had mentioned, it was a 3.7 that hit this morning near the san francisco zoo. a lot of folks felt it cracked kron four's. jo horton is out live for us in the city with the latest on the reaction from people. good morning, joey. >> yeah, good morning, so far a lot of people saying what earthquake, what you guys talking about. but we did talk to a few here who definitely were woken up. >> in rude way, they said with the rattling out here and it's really pretty calm out here folks just carrying on without their with the rest of their day. but take a look behind me at the ocean because this 3.7 struck just off the coast about 3 miles north west of the san francisco zoo. according to the u.s. geological survey. now, the epicenter, they say is about 6 miles south west of the
9:03 am
midpoint of the golden gate. we had some kron 4 viewers calling in say they felt it. here's what one surfer walk up to. >> you know, before my alarm came off, felt just like, you know, like a vibrating bed situation. you just poke me right up. the first thing that i thought about was a stab a surfboard that was over my and i. was concerned that it was going to fall on my head. >> mayor daniel lurie saying i promise to make the safety of san franciscans. my first priorities mayor and i'm keeping that promise today with this morning's earthquake. i ordered city government into action immediately this morning and our first responders have been out across the city, ensuring the safety of our residents. we've also been sharing information and giving people the tools to protect themselves and their families. in an event like this. so again, back out here live just a regular day at the beach, folks carrying on with their
9:04 am
business. we'll be looking around to see if find any damage out here. we'll talk to some more folks about what they encounter. but again, a few say they felt it. they were a little startled, but nothing like that. 7 point. oh, we had that triggered the tsunami warning here just last last month. rather back to all right. thanks a lot of joy. i felt it, but james do scary. >> all right, 903, is the time. >> we are on top of some historic breaking news this morning. president elect donald trump has been sentenced now in his hush money case. but the judge has decided not to impose any punishments. this will allow the incoming president and her office without the threat of jail time. trump was convicted in may of 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide payments that he made to an adult film. actress. he's now the first ever former or sitting president to be convicted and sentenced for a crime. >> 904, right now. and let's get back to the very latest at
9:05 am
a southern california where they are aglow with just thousands upon thou acres burning. now we know the new numbers on death toll, which is 10 deaths confirmed related to the wildfires. double what they knew about yesterday that they're just now being able to get into a lot of the ruins of the 10,000 plus structures that have burned down many of them homes, churches, buildings, businesses, you name it. schools have been destroyed. as for the deaths, we do know at least 2 deaths. we're in the pacific palisades fire and 5, the result of the eaton fire in altadena. those are the 2 biggest fires that are burning right now. yeah. las angeles police, by the way, arrested a suspected arsonist. >> for starting what you see here, the kenneth fire. this was the latest police to break out yesterday afternoon, burning homes near calabassas in west hills. and here you see video of lapd taking that suspect into custody. we're told the people who live in the area spotted him trying to
9:06 am
light a fire and they held him down until police arrived. the lapd talked about the latest in their investigation with that. >> what we know right now is that incident occurred started here and about 20 minutes, 3 minutes later, suspect was detained over woodland hills. why citizens? so someone purposely set the kind of fire? >> at this time, that's what we believe this. we know how or why they did that. i don't. is this a crime scene right yes. if everything goes off as being key, that's being investigated. >> well, right now, cal fire's reporting that the kind of fire has burned just about 900 acres currently, 35% contained. firefighters say that's forward. progress has been stopped. so little good news there. >> and northern los angeles county, this is a photo from the lydia fire which has burned about 400 acres. this
9:07 am
is from our sister station in southern california. it's 75% contained. so that's the best news that we've heard on any of these fires so far. this is the one in the angelo valley acton area. it's about 50 miles north of the city of l a and you can see the big plumes of smoke rising from this one. but again, a 75% contained. so that's some good news. the hurst fire also has better containment. this is a one in sylmar. it's burned 800 acres and it is. 37% can change contained at last check. this broke out tuesday night when those winds started whipping up and people who live in the area were forced to evacuate. they get out us quickly as they could. and then back to the biggest fires, which are the eaton fire in altadena on this. some video from that. this is 13,000 acres. now and it is at 3%. containment that's better than nothing. the winds were, as you know, tuesday night gusting at up to 100 mile per hour. the wind gusts. and that's what caused
9:08 am
smoke and flames to spread. so quickly. one woman talks about how she lost everything. >> a lot of people are kind of like a what we do next. we do next. like again, there's some people without housing housing starts at don't home insurance with don't know what to do. >> so i think this is a direction to know which way to turn, which way to go. what do we do next >> to the fires, one of the big ones and then the other. the biggest one is the palisades fire. and you can see by the graphic there that wants a monster 20,000 acres in size. it's 8% contained, which is an improvement. but they still got a long way to go. this is the fire burning just outside of the city of los angeles. huge plumes of smoke billowing into the night air. as you can see here in some of this video, we talked to some neighbors who say that that as they come back to see what's left of their neighborhoods, they they see the damage. but they're having a hard time absorbing it. >> it's sort of mind boggling. >> and numbing and it's like
9:09 am
what you see on tv and now. >> you're in the middle of it. it's really just tragic. just really gut-wrenching. feels like the world to stop right now. >> well, in developing news, california's national guard troops have been deployed overnight now to assist with road closures as firefighters are battling the massive eaton fire there in la county that fire, which, as we mentioned, has burned about 14,000 acres, has destroyed more than 1000 structures. troops are also helping to free up the sheriffs deputies to patrol tor looters with about 20 people arrested so far inside the evacuation zones. authorities warning of dangerous conditions with downed power lines and gas leaks in some of these affected areas. school districts across the region also still closed. at least 10 deaths reported so far in these wildfires and with the damage mounting, we talked about more than 10,000 structures burned.
9:10 am
>> in this, there could be in effect here in the bay area as far as our home insurance premium. yeah. so we've got kron four's will tran following that part of the story live for us in orinda will. >> if anybody in the bay area can feel sympathy towards the victims in los angeles, it's a renter residents because last year state farm dropped about 2000 of their customers in this city claiming that they live in wildfire area and is simply was not worth it for them to continue coverage. and that covered that sparked all kinds of outrage from the community. and that's exactly what's happening right now in los angeles. not to mention entire california, but pacific palisades just to give you a hard example. well, about 1600 residents in that particular area. and they're still dealing with fires right now. 1600 of them have their insurance dropped by state farm just a couple of months ago. and they had to scramble for other insurance coverage.
9:11 am
hopefully they did find a carrier. but this is a problem that is very indicative of california and could be a problem moving forward because from 2020, the 2022 insurance carriers dropped about 2.8 million customers. and in los angeles county, about 531,000 of them said, you know what, we're not going to continue covering your house. so what's going to happen is they probably will continue doing that. also, those who have insurance im very grateful for that. there is a good chance that your premiums could go up to cover the loss and just to make sure that the insurance companies, according to experts, they believe that your coverage could go down. so we will be feeling this for years to come. despite all the wildfires continuing to rage in los angeles. back to you. >> thanks a lot. wells have to look at all that destruction. is >> 9.11, is the time.
9:12 am
>> other news that we're following a crackdown on unhoused people in the south bay. >> you can see these rv's parked along streets. well, there's something that goes into effect next week where the san jose mayor says he's going to do a great clean up. but we're going talk more those living. t means for
9:13 am
9:14 am
>> welcome back. thanks for staying with us. 9.14, now 2 hours ago, it felt a little shaking, but a little bit more than a little if you're near the san andreas fault as we had a 3.7 magnitude quake just northwest of the san francisco
9:15 am
zoo really affected neighborhoods on the western end francisco daly city in pacifica. again, areas along the san andreas fault really felt the shake more than the rest of us. although several 1000 reports to the usgs of minor shaking elsewhere in the bay. now, aside from that, it is a beautiful day for the bay today. take a look at this view from mount tam lots of sunshine right now. we have a bit of a southerly breeze. there is a little bit of wildfire smoke from southern california defusing our direction. but most of it is actually staying to the south. you can see we still have these high wind warnings and red flag warnings up until the early evening tonight for southern california. back here at home. we actually do have our own wind advisories in upper elevations this weekend, 30 mile per hour peak wind gusts higher up southern california is starting to calm down but with conditions so very dry down there, we still do have those areas of yellow and orange on the map indicating heightened fire danger, even as winds become
9:16 am
less of a thing. i mentioned that smoke settling into the bay just a little bit. that's not going to be a huge problem because we actually have a wind coming through. that's going to kick it out. so smoke does generally stay out of our neck of the woods for the most part, just a little bit of it settling in this afternoon. now, futurecast of winds is showing winds picking up into the afternoon today, 30 mile per hour peak gusts in mostly just at those higher elevations. yet another low is going to traverse across the region and not the kind that we want to cut off low. that does have the potential of stirring up another offshore wind into early next week. this one is not aligning to result in huge problems for la fortunately, but could result in an uptick in wind speeds for us here into monday and tuesday. now 60's for your daytime highs in the city today. 60's as well at the coastline. yesterday we were breaking records across the bay with how warm it got, including in redwood city. you're at 75 yesterday. record breaker. i'll keep you in the 60's this afternoon. but the south bay, you've got some
9:17 am
70's, san jose, santa clara in milpitas at 71. oakland also broke records yesterday getting up to 70 degrees today. you will also stay in the 60's for your high north bay. just as nice as the rest of the bay area this weekend. just very breezy. once you go to those higher elevations tomorrow, temperatures very similar this weekend looks great if you got to get some weekend plans in my recommendation. stay in the bay for it. next week does get a bit wednesday, windy into monday and tuesday, reyna. and at the start of the morning, a few issues for good across the bay area. now traffic starting to taper down out there. >> seeing a lot more green than red. still some small spots of delays like along 80 traveling through berkeley emeryville. there you can see that stretch and a long 5, 18, 8.80, you see just a slight congestion. 1, 1, 2, 80 along the peninsula making a great time traveling into the city right now, finally hit the may's to make it to that fremont street exit is just 10
9:18 am
minutes. so really good day to get things done or summer feel richer at 8. if you are going to be hitting the roads and maybe traveling along 1, of the south bay, we're at 45 last check-in. we've gone down 10 minutes now at 35 there. and sally to 37 about 26 minutes story. james, back to you. thanks. a lot of tonight, 17 right now and a developing story. the sentencing hearing date for the man who killed cash founder bob lee has been pushed back. the hearing was supposed to happen today, but now name among many will be waiting until february 7th for that many was found guilty of stabbing to death. bob lee and he faces now 16 years to life in prison for that conviction. new details this morning about the for people who are found dead in a home in santa rosa. police say the victims were all family members. they were shot to death and the autopsies will be done today. officers were called to the home to do a welfare check.
9:19 am
the home is on monarch court. they responded around 3 in the afternoon yesterday. they had to have forced entry to get in. and that's when they found inside the home 2 men and 2 women dead. the ages from 33 to 77. they all had all been shot and they were in different areas of the house. and police also found a semiautomatic handgun next to one of the bodies. and they served a search warrant and a different home on buena crest court in san jose which they say was linked to one of those people. >> well, 9.18, is the time in on his first full day in office. san francisco mayor daniel lurie has announced an immediate citywide hiring freeze in an effort to get the city's budget deficit under control. the mayor also directed departments to realign programming and spending with the city's priorities with a focus on evidence and proven results. this includes pausing new contracts or programs that have not yet been signed or implemented. meanwhile, a
9:20 am
woman was injured at lori's inauguration party in chinatown wednesday night. she was escorted out by police officers and holding some kind of paper towel to her head, putting pressure on it. our crews say she was hit by a firecracker. we reached out to san francisco police for details. we haven't heard back we also reached out to the mayor's office for comment. also haven't heard back. we'll let you know when we do the firecracker show was put on by campaign as part of the celebration. >> 9.19, is the time in the oakland police commission is watching public hearing. now they have and they want your input on changes. they're looking at for the city's vehicle pursuit policy. there's been some criticism from governor newsom about its. they're gonna have a special meeting today at 5.30, at city hall and then they'll have a town hall next wednesday at east bay church of religious science. that should change that. the changes that they're proposing would affect high speed
9:21 am
chases, which could lead to accidents and even fatalities. oakland's current policy restricts pursuits to violent crimes that, however has resulted in higher than average collisions. compare to state data. the governor is continuing to ask for support for the ciy contingent on policy revisions. drivers and alameda pay attention because there is this new traffic signal. it's located on wilma chan way at atlantic avenue and it protects a bicycle signal and a bike lane and crossing here. and that means that drivers that are trying to turn right on wilma chan have to wait for a green light before they can turn and then also right. turns on reds are no longer prohibited are allowed at that intersection. >> san jose mayor matt mahan giving an update now on the city's plan to remove rv encampments along its streets. the city of san jose approved the program back in november. don't forget that would allow officials to tow away rv's
9:22 am
that are parked on certain streets. well, that's set to go into effect next week on thursday, the mayor said the city is working right now on creating a place where those rv's can park long term, but he calls the current arrangement unsustainable. >> if you own an rv and want to live in it permanently will work with you. but you need to find a sustainable, permanent place to live in rv. >> yeah, the city of san jose estimates that there are about 2000 oversize are fees that are currently park on city streets. well, a new donut shop that was ravaged by a fire in san francisco is west portal neighborhood is finally reopening george's doughnuts and mary meant to was supposed to have their grand opening back in september. but it was pushed back after a fire ignited on west portal avenue between 14th avenue and fill-in. vincent street. for other businesses were also damaged, but a ribbon cutting ceremony is underway right now as they're open for business. >> 9.22 is the time. and still ahead on the kron 4 morning

and supply needs as well. in brightwood police arrested a man accused of burglarizing elementary school twice. >> the man's name is brian thomas. and they believe that he's the one who broke into the isaac montana's elementary school on october, 7th and again on november 18th. when detectives were able to get these images and his vehicle through the school's video surveillance and they also found burglary tools in his vehicle. it's 9.25. and taking a live look here at southern california. you can see we've got a chopper overhead with our sister station. >> looking at the huge fires that are burning. they have become even deadlier this morning with 10 people's deaths now connected to the fires and 10,000 structures burned.

cans and debris littering the streets. here's the routes that burned and a look at the obliterated gal since it's like a war zone home after home decimated with only chimneys remaining few recognizable objects like this chart trampoline, someone's white picket fence stream melted. this man was too upset to talk on camera with me about losing his home on el medio. it says his 3 young children are devastated. he tells me the neighbors next door had just recently moved in their bmw, burned in the driveway. however, these properties and those heavily demolished in the alphabet streets will likely have an easier time rebuilding than the homes damaged along pch and on the steep cliff site's developer just told me off camera. >> that a lot of these places aren't even going to be able to rebuild like that house, for example. the foundation back in the day it was ok to build there. but now this terrain. wouldn't be legit for
9:32 am
coats for today. >> all of the buildings that marquez elementary were completely leveled. and you can see in the background smoke from various house fires continues to rise. i also came across the dozens of cars near palisades drive that were bulldozed out of the way. and you can see several were charred. it wasn't all bad news. however. >> this is the pacific palisades women's club and we thought this completely burned down. but the building is totally intact. good news about a hidden gem here in la. this is the self-realization center. >> off of sunset at pch. >> all of the structures around the lake are still intact. only the bathrooms burned down. >> and warriors head coach steve kerr is among those who have involvement with the fire, his mother, 90 years old, her home burned down. it's a devastating loss and
9:33 am
now he and his siblings are doing their best to help. >> it's up and top made families find my mom is in good hands and about better house is gone. and you know, so i've been on the phone with my siblings quite a you family calls just with my mom and she's but she's got time. lot of support and friends. so she's safe and sound. but yeah, that's my hometown. all my friends who are from there pretty much they've all lost, lost their homes or their family homes. child homes are all high schools gone. town looks like it. just been completely wiped out surreal and devastating. >> yeah, is tough. and also we've got more personal stories. the family of the uc berkeley football player is among those who have lost their homes and of the los angeles area because the fires
9:34 am
cal football saying it's a freshman player named camden jones, lost his homes in his home in the eaton fire. here's picture with his family. everybody safe. they were able to get out and there's a go fund me now for the family. it's on the cal football, social media sites. >> from 05:00am this morning, there's very little water here and that's hard to do. so we're trying to do is utilize our tools. taking water from pools, using whatever were our boots just doing as much as we can. firefighters talking about how they're trying to get around the problem of fire hydrants that are >> dry. and this has led to crews dealing with lots of problems of diminishing water pressure and in some cases, no water at all. and the los a water supply is also affecting residents, drinking water across la. there's a notice from the county that advises residents to only use boiled tap water or bottled water for
9:35 am
drinking and for cooking until further notice. >> well, the concern over dry hydrants has raised questions about how bay area officials can prevent that from happening here. retired fire chief from menlo park says it's not unusual to deal with water supply issues, especially when you're battling a wildfire huge is they're seeing down south. but he does say it's important for fire departments to have good working relationships with water suppliers just to be ready if a disaster strikes. >> i don't know all the reasons of why they had the problems that they've had, but it would seem to me with with the forecasting for the severity of the winds. the potential for fire that they would have lead in. to make sure that things were going to work. well, if they were worried about that, then you know, that bringing water tenders to make sure that you have a backup, they're doing that now. i know we have a water tanker that we've never sent out of the area and they're looking at some of that down in southern california right now.
9:36 am
>> yeah, the former chief says there should be an evaluation over water supply wants the disaster response in southern california is finished. he says hopefully more backup plans are developed. well among the agency sending crews to las angeles is the oakland fire department. firefighters have been sent so far. but on thursday, fire chief damon covington warned the oakland city council that closing 2 fire stations to help close their 129 million dollar budget deficit is a gamble. the city really can't afford. he says had those 2 f%re stations which were closed earlier this week that shuttered during october's keller fire. well, he says oakland could very well dealt with the devastation that we're seeing right now in los angeles. >> we don't have our full compliment of fire service. 3 months ago. we could be looking the same way la looks per person is having a heart attack or seizure port, a structure fire. we could be 10, 12, 15 minutes away because now we're coming from 4 districts. a way to get to that call.
9:37 am
>> well, the city is set to receive a little more than 2 and a half million dollars in the next several weeks from that sale of the oakland coliseum and a reno last year. but even if that money does save, may be one of the 2 fire stations. don't forget that 4 more are slated to close in february. >> and if you're looking to help those affected by the wildfires, there are dozens of organizations to donate to everything from the red cross, the salvation army, even los angeles fire department foundation has set up. found basically place for you to donate to kron four's. rob nesbitt takes a closer look. volunteers are on the ground from the american red cross working to help those who have lost everything from the devastating wildfires in southern california. >> there are also ways you can help the images of the palace aides and even fires are devastating and what they have left behind books almost post-apocalyptic. it's why the red cross of northern california has stepped up to help sending 18 volunteers los angeles, including vigil ceo

hannah malik. folks are still waiting to hear, you know how things are with their specific homes. >> and we just want them to know they aren't alone. so we're making sure that the basic needs are being met with feeding and mental health and all of that. right now the red cross has mobilized truckloads of supplies like cots, blankets and water to assist thousands of people at 8 emergency shelters giving people without a home a safe place to stay while they cope with the devastation when it comes to making sure your donations are going to the right place. the american red cross has safeguards in place to help you avoid scams. the fastest and most efficient way to make an impact to step making a financial donation. the other impact that we're seeing is a blood donations not only with winter weather in other parts of the country, but because of canceled blood drives because of the wildfires here in southern california, there are other ways to help as well. the california fire foundation is looking for donations to support surviving families of fallen firefighters. gofundme has compiled a list of verified fundraisers for people impacted by the wildfires. spca elese disaster. animal response team

is seeking donations to support emergency services such as temporary animal shelters. >> and world central kitchen is providing meals to first responders and evacuees. kron four's parent company nexstar has partnered with the american red cross to launch a donation page for wildfire victims in southern california. you can scan the qr code to make a donation reporting from the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt. kron. 4 news. >> and businesses all around the bay area are offering to do what they can to help those displaced when it comes to animals. for anybody who was displaced in the bay area and they need care for their pets. the grateful dog daycare center is offering space to hold those animals. they say all the pets they will accommodate for free that have been displaced by the fires. and of course, we will continue covering the very latest from los angeles and the firefighting efforts there. >> if you want to check in with what we've collected so far, any time throughout the day, just head to our web site at kron 4 dot com. all right.
