andy, thanks for joining us for kron. 4 news at 11. i'm dan thorn and i'm noelle bellow for the 4th night in a row. wildfires continue to burn through los angeles county. a total of 6 are burning tonight. some much more destructive than others. at least 11 people have died due to the fires. 5 of those

deaths attributed to the palisades fire. >> 6 of the deaths due to the heat and fire. and we are right now taking a live look. >> over los angeles county, the palisades fire is expanded northeast into the valley. you can see the fierce flames showing up on on camera here. we've been told that people there the 405 freeway and the encino reservoir have had to evacuate. also a curfew is also in effect overnight. >> this area was previously in an evacuation warning. it is now under that evacuation order. it does include of the 405 is here. they get the museum. as you can see here. we're looking at. >> 2. >> helicopters right now dropping water and retardant over these active very, very active flames burning here at least 10 helicopters we know are out there just trying their best to douse these

flames. but as you can see, like certain areas, a little bit have definitely received that water. and you can tell they've kind of calmed down. and then you see a flare ups like like this one here on your screen. it's it's frightening. exactly. you see this pop up and you think is it ever going right to know? >> well, tonight, we do know that the winds are a little easier to manage, as you can tell with the smoke. they're not really blowing fiercely any direction other than up, which is what you want. you don't want these flames to be springer embers to anywhere else. so so definitely good to see that in this live image from our sister station down in los angeles of the palisades fire. yeah, as we've mentioned with this fire, it's the largest one of all of them that are burning down there. >> that acreage has expanded. but percent containment so far, more than 20,000 acres have been torched there all the way from the coast through topanga state park, the second

largest in the deadliest fire is the eaton fire. here's a look at the damage there. 3% containment tonight. officials say significant progress has been made to stop the flames from spreading. but of course, the damage has been done. it's burned more than 14,000 acres near altadena. the eaton fire is responsible for at least 6 people dying and between the policy. it's a neat and fires. one in 10,000 structures have been destroyed. crews do have a better handle on the kenneth fire tonight. that one exploded in the west hills area yesterday. >> just north of calabassas. it is 50% contained tonight. it's burned just over 1000 acres this morning. the archer fire sparked near granada hills forward. progress has been stopped on that one. it burned just 19 acres. all evacuation orders and warnings for that fire have since been lifted. and the hearse fire burning near the sylmar area now at 70% containment. that

fire has burned nearly 800 acres near sylmar. >> this is video here of the crews dumping that fire retardant in the area yesterday to get this blaze under control. this one started on tuesday evening, much like the the others people living in this area were also forced to evacuate. >> and olivia fire 98% contained tonight. definitely good to hear that. it burned nearly 400 acres near acton forward. progress stopped there. as we mentioned, we're talking a little bit about the winds and how wind driven these fires have been. lawrence, are they going to get more of a break this weekend? >> not really a you know, we're getting that break right now. but i think over the weekend, in fact, overnight tonight. >> we're going to see that offshore wind begin to ramp up right now. you're seeing the winds are fairly light in around much of los angeles area as we've seen a little break in that weather. in fact, we've had a little bit of a cb. so humidity has also been on the rise. unfortunately overnight

tonight the winds are going to change are going to start to move out a north northeasterly direction. but you can see what a difference. just a little bit of a seabreeze has done. you're looking at 59% relative humidity in los angeles right now. and even some of the spots like chino, where you're talking about a 10% or less. now they're up to 30 per 6%. that's important because that helped to slow down the progress of these fires and gives firefighters a better chance to get a handle unfortunately overnight tonight, everything begins to change again. so we're going to watch that humidity drop. the winds are going to pick up. we do have some we'll fire weather watches issued through sunday. expect another round of some gusty winds not as strong as before, but you could still see 40 and 50 mile an hour gusts and of course, flying embers could spread more fires in los angeles area. >> lawrence, thanks a lot. well, as firefighters, thousands of them continue to battle these fires burning in los angeles county. there's also a growing health concerns related to the use of toxic fire retardant south bay company aiming to protect firefighters from toxic

chemicals. kron four's jack moment. >> in santa clara with more. >> more outside the city of santa clara spyer department because like dozens of other agencies around california, they have fire crews in los angeles helping take care of those devastating wildfires. but it's not just fire departments. there are private companies who are also helping as well, including a startup based out of morgan hill, which says they have a new fire suppressant, which they say can revolutionize the way we fight fight. in a warehouse in port. this startup is ramping up production of its signature product. as we speak. it's being applied right now. it says see xp, sean, far is the ceo of komodo fire systems. it's a fire suppressant that will not only extinguish the fire. >> will also prevent the fire from according to the company, the left side of this pile of straw was treated with the suppressant even when it's

torched. >> this side doesn't catch fire. >> is basically saying that we can put a firewall around any kind of asset fires throughout the bay area in 2024. saw a lot of fire suppressant used the national institute of health, however, says much of the brands that used by firefighters are toxic. >> so far he says this product nontoxic, though they're still working on getting statewide agencies like cal fire and local governments to use their product. they do say pg e is using it. they use it to protect their assets. whether it is a >> power station, whether it is a battery maybe a pole, a power pole along with private fire companies who are hired to protect property and forced to bari. it's personal. his family home in napa was burned within just 2 hours during the tubbs fire a few years back. but, you know, for me, this is a passion. and for me because of what happened, my doubts

house when i watch what's happening in la, it's personal, right? we can't we can't allow that to happen. so you could buy tubes like this to protect your own property. you may be wondering why cal fire and other state agencies are using it to fight wildfires to start up tells us it's because it hasn't gotten to the point where they can load planes full of it to fight the fires. they say once they do that. >> they hope state agencies be more lenient to use it in the future. reporting at santa clara jacmel. but kron 4 news. >> volunteers with the san francisco spca are heading to los angeles to bring back animals affected by these devastating fires to make space for them, though the spca needs to find forever homes for more than 50 puppies currently at the shelter. here's a look at their web site. these are all the puppies available for adoptions. all cuties. the shelter is waiving adoption fees for these animals right now. so if you're looking for a pat and family member head

on over to the st. certainly ones there. >> well, our parent company nexstar media group has partnered with the american red cross to launch a donation page for wildfire victims in southern california. you can scan that qr code on your screen. there to make a donation. now to the fentanyl crisis in san francisco. the city's new mayor, daniel lurie, has pledged to declare a federal state of emergency. >> meanwhile, a four-year-old city-run program is finding success in helping those addicted to the deadly drug kron four's. sara stinson explains. the program specifically helps pregnant women. i sat down with one mom who, after more than a year of getting help is thriving with a job, a home and a healthy baby girl. a new beginning for a new mom issues. farmers like my first day. >> so i think leans inches for him. >> crystal stephens says she was addicted to fentanyl when she learned she was pregnant with delilah. i was in a really hard time in my life

with the addiction. i had came from homeless. steven says a case manager connected her to the city's perinatal stabilization program. that's when she started working with public health nurse. dan allows robots to get for up to she helped me get stable. >> methadone at the hospital allows pregnant. so i could have a safe delivery. she was in the nicu to help me through that process and help me cps case so that she wasn't removed for me at birth. then stevens went to a residential treatment facility with her newborn and a robot supported her through it ail every week visiting her. >> at her treatment facility. >> weighing delilah making sure that she was meeting all her milestones and then supporting her. when she graduated treatment, stevens moved to permanent family housing and has been working at a cafe. >> but she just got a new job

that will allow her to give back at the treatment center that i was out with july. excited to be able to help fill in >> keep them there. let them know that only good things come from staying sober and stay in your baby. the perinatal stabilization program provides services to pregnant women suffering homelessness, addiction or mental health disorders. the department of public health says this program was launched in 2020 after increase of an house pregnant women miscarrying or giving birth on the street. people are capable of change that people who want to stop using drugs can. >> and with the right support do as the fentanyl crisis continues to take lives. stevens hopes programs like these stick around to help families thrive. so it. and so birth to for their children. and just it's really important to keep programs like that. >> up an unfunded, the perinatal stabilization program is one of 3 programs in the city with nurses that help pregnant or postpartum mothers by the end of 2020

>> tonight, the oakland police commission discussed loosening the city's police pursuit policies. the policy went into effect in 2014 and has undergone a couple of revisions since then. currently city officers cannot

chase suspects for sideshows, reckless driving. burglaries are other property crimes they can, though, pursue for viorent crimes, including murder, kidnapping, carjacking and austin. however, if a vehicle reaches more than 50 miles per officers actually need to get permission by a watch commander before continuing on that pursuit. governor gavin newsom has asked the city to adopt less strict pursue policies. public comment has been ongoing. san francisco health officials say they found a presumptive case of bird flu in a child. they say they didn't need to be hospitalized in a sense fully recovered. but officials say risk the public is still low and that there's no evidence of person to person transmission. it's still unclear, though, how the child may have contracted the disease. >> while the usgs says that series of minor earthquakes, you likely felt jolt. san francisco this morning likely originated at the san andreas fault. those quake struck just

off shore of the great highway near the san francisco zoo. not far from the epicenter of the big 19. 0, 6 earthquake. no injuries or damage were reported in connection with these earthquakes. officials say, though, it's a good reminder to make sure you're prepared in case a more severe quake strikes. >> we just want people to be safe. and that's really the important thing is know what to do. drop cover and hold on if you feel shaking or if you get that alert on your phone. >> usgs says that quakes did not prompt an alert because they were too small. people can download the my shake app to be notified of an earthquake. that is 4.5 magnitude or higher before it strikes tease for 3.5 and smaller today. but i definitely felt for sure. grand felt that home. i didn't feel anything you didn't know. i was in my ear or shoes. >> checking on the he was this is all right. let's get you a check of your forecast tonight. the looking at downtown san francisco little

bit of moisture in the air here. we have not seen clouds in a couple of days, laura. yeah. how about that? that fog finally rolling in this afternoon. still a couple patches out there along the coastline. but overnight tonight that offshore wind is going to be kicking in. those clouds go away. so looks like a nice weekend. weather wise here in the bay area is going to be blustery and spot specially over the mountain tops. we do some wind advisories up. >> we're watching for the possibility. some flooding in and around the bay as we're going to see some astronomical high tides still out the door. right now. you're looking at 53 degrees in san jose. this 46 cooled off in livermore. 52 now pacifica. 54 in san francisco. and you're looking at 47 degrees in sonoma. so overall, the state to remaining dry outside the doppler radar scanning your skies. boy, we love to see a lot of green right now on that screen to see some rain rolling into the state. unfortunately, just not seeing it. there's a hint, maybe something in long range, but not much not for here. high pressure still in control. the problem is you get this area of low pressure that's going

to drop to the south as it does high pressure building behind and all of a sudden we watch those winds ramping up again. those strong offshore winds. even here in the bay area overnight tonight, we're gonna watch as winds begin to pick up. you start to see those colors beginning to filter in some red and even purple out there. so some 40, maybe some 50 mile hour gusts over some of the higher mountain tops around the bay area, breezy at times down below 2 in some of the urban centers that will continue on and off throughout the day tomorrow. but long-range forecast looking for a couple raindrops. unfortunately, here comes that ridge building in just like we talked about that low pressure center diving to the south and all of a sudden you get those offshore winds again, fire danger cranking up again in the southern california. maybe a little bit of relief on sunday. but then we've got another system that area of low pressure kind of spins around the southern california. and there you go. all of a sudden you're seeing some strong, almost easterly winds making their way across the los angeles basin that will bring some more high fire danger there as well. possibly some santa ana's. and that will continue right into wednesday and thursday of next week after that county.

interesting, we do have a front that drops through tries to bring a couple scattered showers. southern california doesn't look like it's going to be much, definitely not enough to really help out to bring down the fire. danger temperatures tomorrow. lot of 60's outside almost 70 degrees in san jose next couple days. lot of sunshine coming our way. no rain in sight. just little breezy out there from time to time. but southern california boy, your heart breaks all those videos. the images down there in southern california with the fires and knowing that they are far from done, they've got a long way to go and more wind events coming their way. i know they're exhausted. our sister station. >> doing such incredible work. they're exhausted as well. one of my friends, she said, you know, so many people have lost everything. the least they can do is lose a little bit of sleep, trying to help keep people during all of this. yeah, just that's the live look there behind there. and for a long week, got a long way to go. yeah, thanks. >> all right. well, tonight the oakland zoo is sharing something positive. an update on a spider monkey. the chp rescued during a traffic stop in the central valley. veterinarians say that she

still has she's pretty thin and still has some muscle loss. but she's a recovery and she's following a healthy diet. the zoo named her a zoo lays after the montez lace biosphere preserved in mexico, which is home to the spider monkey. federer marion's think the cheese about 5 to 6 months old. the zoo still trying to figure out where she's going to be moved to once he gets better. but we hope she makes a full recovery. they're going to take good care for. still ahead here in sports, ohio state and texas battled it out in the college football playoff tonight. the winner going to the finals. ben ross is going to tell you will be meeting up with notre dame for meeting up with notre dame for the championship.
