>> right now, the kron 4 morning news. firefighters continue to battle 3 major wildfires in la county is the death toll now climbs to 24. >> plus, a violent start to the new year in oakland, a triple shooting at a community center leaves 2 people dead. and san jose officials begin moving out rv dwellers today. we're live with the latest. it said. >> good morning and thanks for waking up with us on a monday. i'm darya and james clear skies behind us here. but boy, is it windy outside? it is. and so john is watching that tracking it here in the bay area and southern california. the winds is the last thing we wanted to be talking about as we are still battling those fires down south 50 mile per hour gusts already in the bay area. gusts of wind in

southern california could exceed 70 to 80 miles per hour. so still some potentially rapid spread. >> ahead of us as part of those fires looking here locally walnut creek camera looking just fine. skies are clear, but you will feel the wind on your commute into work right now happen basing 34 mile per hour in fairfield 50 mile per hour gusts in the oakland hills right around the caldecott tunnel. so make sure to watch your travel if you are in a high profile vote vehicle, you're going to feel those gusts a little bit more high wind watches for the north bay mountains wouldn't be surprised to see those expanded for other parts of the bay area. they're in effect through tomorrow morning. we also have frost advisories inland because of these cold 30's you're seeing in spots like dublin down 39 degrees right now after a chilly start, we are going to stay windy but get a lot more mild in the afternoon. right back to the 60's right >> if you are you're out there traveling in those things,

just a little slower, 20 woman right on the bay bridge last hour. we did have a car fire. they are along 80. that's already cleared off the branch. so now it's when you got to contend with san mateo bridge about 16 while rich with summer feels at 15. >> and if you are going to be taking the golden gate bridge, you can see from that flag. gusty things. are there. high profile vehicles use less speed. a 23 minute back to you. thanks well, let's get back to southern california in the situation now. and la county crews are reporting some progress. we're taking a live look here from southern california. but there are still many fires burning in the death toll has risen now. and as john was just mentioning as windy here, and those santa winds could whip up and that would complicate efforts for them to fight the fires in southern california. yeah. so here's a look at where these fires are burning again. the map showing you the >> 3 largest fires palisades hearst and eaton fired just by looking at the graphic, you know, they're the palisades fire is the largest more than

23,000 acres burned so far. containment is growing, but still only at about 14 percent. firefighters are making some better progress on the eaton fire. >> that one is 33% contained. that's the middle of the screen there. you can see 14,000 acres have burned and taken with the many structures. thousands of structures have been burned so far that the hurst fire, which is the one on the right where there are 300 firefighters on the scene. that 89% contained this morning, stopping it at 800 acres so far the death toll overall from these fire stands at 24 this morning and they are expecting, unfortunately, that to rise as they will be able over time to get into these tens of thousands of burned out homes and other structures to see what is left. so fire crews from all over the country as we know are descending on southern california help with the firefighters. and that includes a good number of crews from right here in the bay. area's go to kron four's jack moment for that story.

>> of all the horrific scenes shown from the thousands of acres scorched and lives ruined by los angeles fires. photos show with the panic and terror cemented into history. photos also show the heroism of firefighters from all over the country to kind of get in job to kind of help. >> so when you kind of have incidents like this, of the magnitude, you always want to go. you always want to >> that includes crews from the bay area. >> a lot buddies back from back home are down here, but they're just keeping busy port carlos or to with cal fire czu. it's a song bird reunion seeing his bay area colleagues battling the worst set of fires. the state has seen. >> in a couple of years. and then this is what we call over. zoom or test shows us the staging area for cal fire trailers for interviews, press conferences and meetings. very much like a miniature city port is job is going to

grocery stores or wherever people congregate and give them vital information to keep themselves safe. >> and about the next face, now that the fires are just starting to get under control was a fire runs through. it's important for us to be able to give the right information for the people when they start to repopulate. so everything gets done right in orderly fashion. and that next phase includes coming home for thousands, knowing many of those won't have a home to return to it all. >> in spite the national guard and dozens of fire departments all helping the cause. the damage here will be felt for generations. the unknowns are up. >> pretty scary. crews are having a cautious mindset, though, knowing increasingly intense weather events are becoming the norm. they are changing. >> but we just got to be fluid and change with them and it will be fine. >> jacques moment kron, 4 news. >> well, for many people living in santa rosa's coffey park, the devastating fires southern california, bringing up a lot of memories of their

other triggered and feel about what happened in october of 2017 when the fire ripped through the north bay community, destroying homes and properties. kron four's will tran live for us up in santa rosa where a lot of folks there are, you know, reflecting back on that horrific experience. well. >> it is too close to home for them, james, because anybody in the bay area can possibly relate to the la victims, its people here in santa rosa, specifically copy park. so many people came to this coffee shop after the fire and they commiserated, they hugged. they were thankful for their lives. and unfortunately, there are those who could not join them because ultimately 22 people died from the fires in the tubs fires back in 2017. let's show you the video. raced through this community just like it did in los angeles. strong winds at that time and they had to evacuate in the overnight hours. and by the

time it was over the tubbs fire cost 1.2 billion dollars just for santa rosa. it cost 100 million dollars just to fight it, leaving behind a trail of tears, heartbreak in years and years of rebuilding. i got a chance to talk to somebody who lived in this neighborhood at that particular time. here's his reaction to seeing the images out of los angeles. to me is kind of different more of a visual person. so like if i'm actually there seeing affects me more. so it's more different than seeing >> and video and stuff like that. but yeah, i mean, it does bring back some memories. >> for them, it's very triggering. they remember getting a knock at the door and then thinking they could possibly return only to get a knock at the door again to tell them to once again leave. so it is very personal to

them. but i got words of wisdom from them. and i know las angeles. they have their own problems and probably not watching television this morning, but they're saying just keep your head up. do acts of goodwill go around? he did during that time just to pass out water and of course, count your blessings because ultimately he says your life matters more than your personal easier said than done. but he has a lot of reflection, 7 or 8 years after the tubbs fire. he's still here with a smile on his face. back to you. >> all right, thank you. well, time now 7 or 7. and today san jose has just started temporary banning rv's in designated areas across the city. they have yet kron four's. joey horta live for us in san jose at the first location that's being targeted. joey, good morning. >> good morning, guys. these are the first rv's. it could be towed away as soon as today. and some of these have been parked out here for quite some time. as you take a look

behind me here. there's about 20 of them where we're at on channel with avenue. we did see police out here earlier talking to one of the rv dwellers. but officers would not reveal why they were called out this morning. these are among the more than 2000 rv's that people are living in long-term here in san jose. according to the city back in november, city council set aside one and a half million dollars to remove them. >> if own an rv and want to live in it permanently will work with you. but you need to place to live in your rv. and i'm the person that doesn't want to deal with any cops dry. just want to sleep and wake up the next day. >> now, according to the city, the rv's bring noise, trash fires, and sometimes even crime. this section of 20 channel with avenue rather's the first of 30 locations where this ban will be enforced. cities targeting a new location every week. so next week, wharton avenue

would be the one where they begin to toe possibly those rv's were told by the city that once those rv's are removed, they'll come with street sweepers and clean up the area. we're now back to you. all right. thanks a lot. >> 709, is the time you want to take in a santa clara county, too, where they're looking for volunteers to help count the number of homeless people. they're doing a 2025 count to assess the situation. it's happening and through january. 26 12, 22nd and 23rd. the volunteers are going to go out and survey those experiencing homelessness. ask for demographic information and get more about their living situation. and this is in order to assess the problem in the county. and if you go to the county's website, if you'd like to volunteer, you can find out how right there. >> in the south bay, santa clara county jail has reached a 20 year high in terms of inmate deaths. they. recorded that in 2024. now, according to the california department of justice, 10 people died while in custody of the sheriff's office last year.

this is out of the elmwood correctional facility in milpitas along with county hospitals were deputies transported incarcerated people for medical care. the number of deaths in 2024 doubled from 5 recorded in 2023. meanwhile, crime is the lowest it's been in more than a decade in one west valley city cupertino recorded 741 criminal incidents in 2024, that's the lowest number they've seen in 12 years. the city's dashboard is showing the most common crime category was identity theft forgery and fraud. they had 169 instances of that and then it was followed by 111 grand thefts and 106 car burglaries. the other crimes included 150 commercial in-home robberies. 54 instances of vandalism and 29 stolen cars. among other things. >> happening today, santa rosa city school just got to hold the first of 5 town hall meetings that they're having to talk about possible school

closures. let's take a look at when these meetings are going to be happening. tonight's town hall is from 6 to 7.30, and montgomery high school. and then you can see the following dates and or is a city schools are facing a 20 million dollar budget deficit and they say it may be necessary to close or at least consolidate several schools. the district says that these town halls are way for students, teachers, parents to participate, learn about the problem and possible solutions for the district information is available in english and spanish at the town hall meetings, santa rosa city schools are the largest school district in sonoma county. >> we're going to take a break here at 7.11, but still ahead on the kron, morning news, san francisco recording a presumptive case of in a child's. we're gonna have more on that person's condition. and after the break, as the death toll continues to grow there in southern california from the wildfires, governor newsom is now responding to the insults president elect donald trump has made regarding. and new technology,

>> welcome back. it is 7.15, in really windy out there this morning. take a look at this view from the top of mount tam. the camera is really shaking. we've already had winds overnight in excess of 50 miles per hour. again, dry offshore winds right here. upping fire danger for southern california. more of just interruption to an otherwise beautiful day for us here at home. we are seeing winds regularly gusting into

the 30 to 40 mile per hour range. we do have high wind advisories for the northern part of the bay area in our upper elevations. wouldn't be surprised to see a few more advisories popping up. these are in effect from this morning all the way through tomorrow morning as that wind event will continue, especially overnight tonight as that low passes right past us. and with that southern california is actually expecting the strongest winds down south tonight into tomorrow morning. look at how much of the la metro area is lit up in yellow, orange and red. this is areas with extreme fire. danger pairing of those dry winds. all the dry grass and brush that we have down there as well as the very low humidity. so scary situation for la. absolutely. still offshore winds will carry smoke away from the coastline. so no major smoke impacts, especially not for us in the bay area. temperatures in the 60's for your daytime highs with year in the city, the coast or really anywhere else. san bruno at 61. we side

very comfortable weekend and that comfortable mild field does continue for another day. we're just adding a lot of winds into it. this forecast might keep you inside a little bit anyways. oakland at 63 for your high areas like sonoma and napa also reaching the low 60's today. let's look ahead tomorrow's temperatures as well as all the way through thursday, solidly in the 60's. we will see temps falling back into the 50's towards the weekend, which is closer to our seasonal averages, but remaining dry all the way through the forecast raid. >> windy conditions are slowing you down out there on your monday morning commute. you can see low 80 i for 6.80, things are starting to slow down even in the south bay along want to want travel to san jose. lot of people are taking their time this morning. 23 minute ride on the bay bridge. we had a few earlier issues and since cleared out. but you still have to contend with the

incoming trump administration may withhold aid. >> from above the california air national guard help support firefighters on the ground. the la county medical examiner says 24 people have died. firefighters estimate the southern california wildfires destroyed more than 12,000 structures. we haven't seen that before. not not in southern california. not like this. california governor gavin newsom says it may be the worst disaster in u.s. history. i think it will be in terms of just the costs associated with it. while we at fema now are starting to help support this recovery piece last week, president joe biden moved quickly to declare a major federal disaster days before president elect donald trump is due to take office. trump wrote online california governor gavin newsom should resign. adding this is all his fault. there is a serious lack of competent governance in california. incoming vice president jd vance and republicans blamed california democrats for the destruction,

policies of the liberal administration out there, i believe have made these fires worse. i expected there will be strings attached to money that is ultimately approved. responded on nbc's meet the press responding to donald trump's insults. >> we would spend another month. i'm very familiar newsom says he's invited president elect trump to california to see the devastation for himself. >> he says so far the president elect has not agreed to a visit in washington. i'm today some lot back to you. >> 7.21 is the time and the governor, gavin newsom, by the way, has issued an executive order aimed at streamlining the process of rebuilding homes and businesses. in the wake of that fire, it means that a wide range of building permits and reviews that are needed for projects are going to be suspended. and that is hoping make it easier and faster for people to get the help they need the measure also extends laws against price gouging for building materials and construction

costs throughout the year. state agencies will also be empowered to find creative ways to streamline rebuilding and recovery efforts there in la county. meanwhile, california's national guard is sending more than 2600 service members to los angeles. they're helping, obviously in the firefighting effort, but they'll also help out by protecting property against looters. >> we're here assisting cal fire with the wildfires down here in southern california will be flying the ch. 47 chinook with a water bucket truck to the belly of it primarily will be doing pulling water out of reservoirs, dropping water on the fire were near the fire to slow down. really our intent is to buy calfire more time further down the road to make cuts. >> art is staging at an airport in ventura county and they'll be sending out members from there. >> also 23rand still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news as we take a look at devastating wildfires that have broken out in southern california. we're going to continue to look and

windy last night through this morning. super windy conditions overnight already seeing gusts of wind in excess of 50 miles per hour up in the east bay hills, for example. >> now down in san jose and lots of sunshine as we get the morning started. that is something we are going to see across the entire bay area because this is a dry, offshore wind pushing dry air from the interior out towards the coast, as you can see, 30, 40 mile per hour gusts regularly gusts in excess of 50 from time to time. now we do have high wind advisories for the north bay mountains. wouldn't be surprised to see a few more of them popping up. these remain in effect through tomorrow morning. so today, tonight into tomorrow, we remain very, very windy. we also have frost advisories and wind this morning. dublin, you're at 39 degrees. palo alto also at 39 right now. so chilly, start for a lot of us were going to be back to those mild temps this afternoon. but today we add in the wind which will be an inconvenience for sure, as you try to step out and enjoy the sun rated. all right, john, thank for that. i

know on my ride into the city this morning, things are very gusty. >> along the bay bridge and to hands on the steering wheel. so make sure you do the same. 22 minute right there. while you're san mateo bridge sits at about 16 richmond center. fell bridge is at 13 and the golden gate bridge. 37 of the tolls. 30 minutes started. james, back to you. thank you. reyna 7, 31 2 people are dead and another in the hospital after a triple shooting in oakland. so this happened at a busy community center. kron four's jack molmud explains what happened. >> residents here on telegraph avenue described a pretty gruesome scene here on friday evening just after 10:00pm where police say 2 people were killed and one was injured in a triple shooting. >> was it 8 still left after oakland's 4th and 5th homicides of 2025. left this block of telegraph avenue you people crying props. are that worker here?

>> so right here in the senate, which years ago when i this, that is not a single blade. and i police say they responded to shooting just after 10 in the evening, 2 were dead on the scene. the other person transported to a local hospital and is listed in stable condition. neighbors say police with their until 3 or 4 in the morning and the shooting originated at a community center located in this building where a party was hosted. we reached out to that community center and have yet to hear back. but when walking by the community center saturday, people inside the building told us no comment. but i came up from san jose last night i want something enough. we have the whole area cordoned off taped off. you know, i mean, it was a body. lynn, we tested. chandler says the most striking part was how young the victims court. he says this part of oakland is normally safe but says crime flows into this neighborhood from lake merritt. and it's starting to make him concern. >> it does quite often in the middle tonight walking the dogs. it also.nit's been pretty safe. i've been in the past year. but, you know,

things happen. you know, you just have to be cautious when you're outside at night time. that's all i can say to just a tragedy. you know, such a life cut down. other people say the crime has continuously ramped up here, but they do for a long time. what your kids, what else? she's sweeping new police cars. they see the >> a homeless guy didn't know half of >> the oakland police officers association told kron 4 in a statement there is a crime surge occurring in oakland as the city council has continued to cut police services, too many hard-working innocent residents and businesses are being victimized by criminals who see that police are short staffed. we reached out to oakland police for more information on a possible arrest and more details on the victims but have yet to hear back reporting in oakland jack moment. kron 4 news. 7. 33 34 nois the time in 2 days after that shooting, the jack. this told us about. >> 2 lwere shot on garfield avenue by the eastmont mall. officers found evidence of the shooting at the scene sunday morng. and then later found out that the victims took themselves to a

local hospital. those victims are listed in critical but stable condition this morning. police are still looking for the shooting suspects. meanwhile, sunnyvale police have arrested 2 men connected to a deadly shooting in sunnyvale near 7 will nearly 7 years now after it happened. vincent and a sandoval were charged with murder after being accused of a shooting that happened at the fair oaks strip mall back in 2017. one person was killed. another was injured. the investigation went cold until the tactics were able to identify the men last year. they were arrested last week. >> time now is 7.34. and we continue to look at what's going on in southern california with the wildfires as the deadly fires rage on the palisades fire. thousands of people are evacuated from that and thousands more prepared to leave at a moment's notice. the washington post reports the palisades fire likely came from a fire that broke out in the santa con of santa monica mountains on new year's eve.

and firefighters have been using helicopters to fight the fires. still, you can see the damage and the thousands of structures that have burned 6 days after this ignited with all of the winds that whipped up in la the las angeles fire department says that it's not their practice to monitor locations of past fires. investigators say it's going to be a long time before the final report on the fire's cause is released. but the winds, the bad news is they are expected to return. so firefighters are prepared for the worst in southern california as we speak. and in morgan hill, there's a startup that's lending a hand to battling the fires. they have a new kind of fire suppressant, komodo fire systems is shipping out there. suppressants spray. they make these products that use natural chemicals that are nontoxic. they say they're nontoxic, but they are chemicals. the product

extinguishes fire and also prevent fires from spreading. they're still working on getting this in the hands of statewide agencies like cal fire and local governments as well. they say that pg e is using it. >> they use it to protect their assets. whether it is a power station, whether it is a battery maybe a poll, a power pole. >> the fire they're still working on getting this fire retardant into airplanes as they can drop. did loads of return at one time on wildfires. once they're able to do that, they say that other agencies are going to be able to use them in a more massive scale. >> well, a lot of bay area residents of businesses have joined forces now in the east bay to try and help out those in southern california. they're sending donated goods to the people who have been wiped out by these fires. kron four's. lindsey ford has more. >> wildfire victims on their

path to recovery after flames tore through homes and businesses in los angeles county. like so many organizations stepping in to help 2 bay area, social media influencers. jesse kept rela and natalie marshall created clothing and toiletries donation site for those affected thinking like i will get some people to show up and >> we're at gridlock down to the highway. so the entire bay area has basically showed cars lined the streets to populate trader vic's in reveals parking lot. >> where the donations were dropped off at bring >> jackie is good for hearing how all the way la is inundated with donations. people are being so helpful. this 26 foot moving truck behind me will be delivering hundreds of items from baby clothes, toiletries bags and other goods to families that are affected by the la fires. coach manager. organizers estimate 65 southern california. families will be
