9:01 am
>> were gusts will exceed 60 even 70 miles per hour. this is your view at mount diablo right now. the hillsides are green and that is our saving grace. we've already seen our winter precipitation and the u.s. our fire danger is that is much a problem is a southern california, 30, 40 mile per hour gusts regularly today. we've already seen gusts topping 50 miles per hour up in the east bay hills. we do have high wind watch is in effect for the north bay mountains through 10:00am tomorrow morning. temperature wise, it's a chilly start. so don't forget the extra layer. lot of 40's and 50's right now as we move into the afternoon day time highs will reach the low 60's and are plenty of sun rain arrives on thing that got those high winds out there. but looking at the commute on our bridges, making a lot of progress. >> just because it doesn't seem like a lot of traffic. there was traffic there. so take it easy as you're traveling, especially in those high profile vehicles, 7 right richness. and with phil, the san mateo, you're at about 15
9:02 am
there on the golden gate. 30 minute ride and those highways across the bay area. you're still seeing a little rant, especially over in the east bay. we're tracking that money morning. drive be right back. all right, james, back to you. ok, we're also tracking the fires in southern california and they are making some progress on the fire fight ahead of another santa ana wind event today, as john has talked about, and that could further complicate the firefighting efforts. the death toll has risen now to 24 and counting. the acreage continues to burn homes continue to be lost, but they are making some more progress. so let's take a closer look at the 3 major fires that are burning as we get a live look from above the la county area. the palisades fire is still the biggest threat at this point. bning 23,000 acres. and it's only 14% contained. you can see it there on the map. clearly the largest fire and the most concern for firefighters at this moment. but they have their hands full as well with the eaton fire.
9:03 am
it is a little bit more contained, though. 33 1% at this hour with 14,000 acres. plus burn. and then the fire that made the most progress on which is 89% contained right now is at the hurst fire and the death toll from all of these fires at this point again, is 24. but they continue mean they're not even able to get into these burned out neighborhood. so as they do that and continue to go in with cadaver dogs, we will unfortunately probably hear more loss of life. yeah. and as we've reported, that number of crews from all over the country, but here in the bay area specifically have gone down there trying to help out. >> with the firefighting effort. and that includes clued crews, of course, from the bay area kron four's moment has more. >> of all the horrific scenes shown from the thousands of acres scorched and lives ruined by los angeles fires. photos show with the panic and terror cemented into history.
9:04 am
photos also show the heroism of firefighters from all over the country to kind of get in job to kind of help. >> so when you kind of have incidents like this, of the magnitude, you always want to go. you always want to go to. >> that includes crews from the bay area. >> a lot buddies back from back home are down here, but they're just keeping busy port carlos or with cal fire czu. it's a song bird reunion seeing his bay area colleagues battling the worst set of fires. the state has seen. >> in a couple years. and then this is what we call over. zoom or test shows us the staging area for cal fire trailers for interviews, press conferences and meetings. very much like a miniature city port is job is going to grocery stores or wherever people congregate and give them vital information to keep themselves safe. and about the next face. now that the fires are just starting to get under control was a fire runs through. it's important for us to be able to give the right
9:05 am
information for the people when they start to repopulate. so everything gets done right in orderly fashion. and that next phase includes coming home for thousands, knowing many of those won't have a home to return to it all. >> it's like the national guard and dozens of fire departments all helping the cause. the damage here will be felt for generations. the unknowns are up. >> pretty scary. crews are having a cautious mindset, though, knowing increasingly intense weather events are becoming the norm. are changing. >> but we just got to be fluid and change with them and it will be fine. >> jacques moment kron, 4 news. >> and scenes like that are reminiscent of what we saw in coffey park in santa rosa all those years ago when they have that devastating wildfire that blew through overnight while people were sleeping. yeah. and the folks who've been through that in 2017 are triggered. >> and so just they're compassionate, but they're also so concerned they go to pieces when they hear about this will tran has been

covering of this morning finding out just how sensitive of an issue this is for them. will. >> this is triggering for them. no doubt about it. some say that they're thankful they night down there because if they see it for themselves, it would be too traumatic. many others, including a woman. i spoke to didn't need to be down there just asking her koster to start tearing up. we're at coffee park and this community was leveled. all these homes. probably only 2, r% 3, 4, years old. this was a game changer. it was gone on that overnight hour in 2017 and october because the fires just race through this community forcing so many people to flee. by the time the tubbs fire was over, it knocked out 5600 structures. many of them in tie coffey park neighborhood. and the one thing that they have in common look at how relatively new they all look, i mean, is only about a year or 2 old looks
9:07 am
like his brand-new pain because it pretty much is it had to be rebuilt. the tubbs fire went through here and by the time it was over, it cost 100 million dollars just to fight the fire. 1.2 billion dollars as far as damage to santa rosa. leaving behind so much heartbreak. 22 people died if in need body, could feel the pain of las angeles victims and want to hug them. its people in santa rosa. >> like, oh, my god, help them. to help them. because easy. to have to get up running with your kids. it's not easy. to leave everything behind. when you left that

9:09 am
it's not going to be easy, especially. for those people who lost everything. but there is hope. >> full disclosure, yulia seven's, my camerawoman and i we under and apologized for triggering that memory which obviously is so raw. 8 years later for her. she said that she and her kids while they were frantically trying to get ahold of her aunt, they drove down to but debate thinking that's the only place that you can possibly pull over and maybe get some water, get some help. and then just ride it out. and then the days the weeks ahead, she said her high school daughter. well, her friend lost everything and she asked her mom, mom, can i buy my friend? some clothes. she had not. >> all right. we'll thank you

this wind moving from the east out towards the coast. and with that, it is pushing dry air and across the region today is going to be another abundantly sunny one, but breezy through the day today into tomorrow morning. we do have these high wind advisories for the north bay mountains. now, as far as the big picture set up goes very similar to last week below branching off the jet stream and with it dragging this dry air out towards the coast, we are seeing extraordinary fire danger for the southern parts of the state because the fact we got these winds, the dry humidity haven't seen the winter rains yet. so with those fire still actively burning in southern california comes that risk of continued rapid spread. now one plus of the wind is it is pushing the smoke away from the coastline. it's not really dealing with smoke, especially not for the bay area. temperatures today in the 60's, whether you're in san francisco, the coast or along the bayshore inland, it is another above average day across the bay. as far as temperatures go. so we're

goes into effect, 170 million users, including both my children would be banned from using it. they wouldn't even able to access the data and it looks like that's what's gonna happen unless some sort of last second reprieve reprieve from either the supreme court. they heard arguments on friday there to make a ruling this week. but most people are not expecting u.s. supreme court to help bytedance. ok, alright. now let's get to the effects of the fires in southern california. >> boy, for some of those insurance companies that pulled out of offering fire insurance last guess from their perspective, they did that just in the nick of time. but there's this is a costly wildfire by some accounts, the worst wildfires we've seen in some parts of la ever. that's going to have some effects financially. and you know but what if? what are your thoughts there? but about insurance companies? because many of them hit record profits last year, right? and like you said that including state of california anyway. >> 12,000 structures have burned down. estimates are
9:20 am
right now 435 250 billion dollars in damage just but for the property casualty insurers themselves, they're looking to be on the hook for about 20 billion dollars. mercury general was down 20% last week. 24%, all state was down 5%. travelers was down 4%. now this week, the counter his monday and wall street's rewarding as companies are buying them again in large part because they're gonna raise their premiums and they've been pretty smart when pretty disciplined about not offering insurance to his new homeowners. they've been cutting back their exposure. they've been pretty strategic on it. and again, it stinks to talk about because we're right in the middle of it right but it's catastrophic for, you know, individualize. but for the insurance companies going to be ok. >> but on the flip side, i know it past natural disasters. you've that stocks like, like maybe caterpillar or home depot are things where it's all about rebuilding. it's all about, you know, resurrecting from the ashes. those might be good plays down
9:21 am
the road. i don't know if you're thinking about it in those terms. >> yeah, it it's not as material as you would want to be in disasters. like you're saying on home depot and lowe's. but there is an effect short my question is, with all the structures, how we contractors, that there's just not enough contractors in america, it's a good time to be a contractor or to do have have review. well. one of my friends, his house burned down and united called many such rebuild. and i said he has not wife, doesn't have kids he doesn't live in la anymore. so he may just take the money. pretty interesting staff a it's tragic on so many levels. >> all right. well, let's talk about dry january. i guess it's something that has some hidden benefits. walk me through it. and with the wildfires the stock market like i need a drink now write some. >> by 8.62% of american adults
