evening. and thanks for joining us for kron. 4 news at 11. i'm dan and i'm noelle bellow. firefighters in southern california. >> responding to yet another fire tonight as the race to contain 2 other massive wildfires. >> continues. we're keeping a

close eye on the auto fire burning in ventura county. this is live look from our sister station ktla from their those flames. they popped up shortly after 7 o'clock tonight. this is a close-up look at one of the most active parts of this wildfire. looks like they're going to give us a wider view because it >> does seem that they've started to extinguish most of it. but that looks like quite a strong flare yeah, it looks like the probably just 2 and through some some fuels in that area. we know that at least 75 firefighters have been out there. >> on the scene, they've been able to get a jump on this pretty quickly. there's no people that thankfully live in this area. so there's no issues with any of that. however, there are evacuation orders in that area in case anybody decides to maybe go there or if they happen to be in that area. you know, you get out there. yeah, this is a an ox start near a golf course. >> so right. as you mentioned, no one's necessarily living right on top of it for next to these flames. but it does look like they've started to get a

handle. it was a stretch pretty wide. the size of it earlier on. and now it just seems to be contained to quite a small area. so really good to see that they're starting to get a handle on this. yeah, you could even see some of the crews out there kind of doing that. that line, you know, they they can cut it off and then. >> and a longer continues eat away. and then there's still spots, of course. but you can see that most of it is sort of situated in just little pockets. it's not like a big the broad situate definitely have the upper hand. we do want to get to some information on the 2 largest and most devastating wildfires. >> this is a look at some of the damage left behind by the palisades fire. it sparked last tuesday. it is 14% contained tonight. it has burned nearly 24,000 acres near pacific palisades. meantime, the eaton fire in altadena and passing this 33% contained. it burned more than

14 1000 acres. those flames are still going. it's good to see that they've got some containment numbers, but there are some winds tonight. kron 4 meteorologist kathy trafton monitoring those conditions down in southern california. kathy. >> we know it's hard to believe that was a week ago that the first spark was fired for the palisades fire. and we continue to battle with very gusty winds. very dangerous. santa ana winds. >> blowing offshore and really causing huge, huge problems right now through many parts of los angeles and ventura counties. a red flag warning is in effect. in fact, its a p d s red flag warning in some areas for particularly dangerous situation for the red flag warning. so people got critical fire concerns going on. here's some of the gusty winds. as you can see, the areas of yellow on especially orange and especially bad. that's where the strongest winds are. it's high. it's a very high risk for large fires with a very

rapid fire spread extreme fire behavior and also long-range spotting sundays. these are really critical conditions and big concerns that's likely to continue for more days. so we've got big problems. southern california fire than long duration for these red flag warnings, pds situation again in ventura and los angeles counties, the damaging winds and some of the areas could be up to 70 miles per hour. that flag warning areas high risk for the fires. back to dan. happy. >> the death toll from both of these fires did rise to more than 24 excuse me did rise to 24 over the weekend and at least 17,000 structures have been destroyed. that includes homes, cars, businesses, churches, schools, apartment buildings, powerful winds, as we mentioned, have been a key ingredient in these

devastating fires down in los angeles. well, wildfire researchers at san jose state are keeping a close eye. >> on the current fires burning in la county. the university's wildfire interdisciplinary research center has the goal of helping california. >> manage the growing crisis of wildfiresaand right now the center is forecasting the atmosphere weather and fires like the one that's burning in pacific palisades through models. they're taking a deeper look into the situation. not only in real time, but also in the days that are to come. researchers say most of the work, though, comes after the fires are done burning. >> analysis this this deeper understanding of how these fires grow, why they grow the way to do and that internal have, you know, eventually did ground effects to. know how to better fight these fires. we know patterns to look out for because we studied them with the simulations. >> well, researchers believe that california will have longer and worse fire seasons.

they also will not be surprised if there were more urban fires in the future. >> meantime, fire crews in the east bay spent today working to reduce the fire risk in the bay area. crews with the moraga orinda fire district conducted prescribed burns behind saint mary's college. they took advantage of usual an unusually dry january to burn piles of trimmings cut down last spring from oak trees. dennis rain with the fire district says when it comes down to mitigation, reducing fuels is their best bet. >> community up in boulder canyon that would be at risk from a fire that started here on a western north that could blow embers back up into the canyon where we really couldn't get to him easily. >> rain also adding he grew up in southern california and use work in pacific palisades. he stressed the fire mitigation citing striking similarities between the terrain there and here. >> millions of people expected

to visit san francisco this week for the annual jp morgan healthcare conference. the conference kicked off in union square today and it is already creating a buzz in the area. attendees are expected to bring more business to hotels, restaurants and shops in downtown san francisco. some local businesses say they're already getting more customers. >> this is such an impactful conference to kick off january, which which historically without this type of the conference, is a really slow month in the restaurant business. >> the jp morgan healthcare conference is one of the largest of the year to come to san francisco. >> now the health care conference did spark some protests this afternoon at union square. many saying it's an opportunity for the rich to get richer off the backs of patients. >> kron 4 sarah stinson joins us in the newsroom tonight with more. sara. >> people yelled and healthcare conference attendees saying they're fed up with the current system.

protesters today called for a public takeover of the health care industry. eliminating the profiteers with medicare for all. >> it would have been talking about moment talk about how they can make more by denying people health thousands of people attending the biggest healthcare conference in the world confronted by protesters in san francisco monday dozens held up signs calling on the companies to put people before profits see certain make of millionaires who making billions of profits off of the backs of patients i see people deny healthcare. that makes me steve seltzer helped organize the protest. he says the health care system is failing americans. why should people be denied health care in the richest country in the world? at the same time we're spending trillions of dollars for wars abroad. ukraine, israel, and yet we don't have money. i mean, israel has

national health the 43rd annual healthcare conference held by jp morgan with united healthcare is at the saint francis hotel. it comes as luigi mangione is in jail awaiting trial for the murder of united healthcare ceo brian thompson. last month. >> several protesters held up signs in support of men gionet only condone his actions. i do could own the fact that whatever he raise the awareness of this right, the entire world is talking about this industry. they should not exist. this is a system problem killing an executive is not going to change a system. i hope this issue comes out in his a few protesters yelled at attendees exiting the conference as tensions became high. police officers lined up in front of the hotel. can we ask you a thing of these protesters of the conference? >> it's all pretty you everybody's to come together every right to protest. but it's like when you see a pro luigi sign, that's that's like

really, really bad taste. i'm kind of surprised the police are allowed because technically threatening. >> some protesters told us they plan to return to the conference tomorrow as first lady jill biden is expected to give a keynote address. we did reach out to jp morgan who declined to comment on the protest. i'm sarah stinson reporting back to you. >> sarah, thank you. new at 11 the justice department has released its special investigation on president-elect trump's interference in the 2020 election concluding of trump had not won the 2024 election. he would have been convicted. the justice department sent the report to congress late tonight after a judge refused to block its release. special counsel jack smith and his team have indicted trump back in 2023. on charges of working to overturn the election in connection to the january 6 capitol insurrection. but after s veral delays in court, smith ended up dismissing the indictment following the november election because of the longstanding policy that

sitting presidents cannot face a federal prosecution. smith also resigned this week from the justice department. a life-saving deal for hundreds of thousands of people living in east side. san jose, the county of santa clara announcing today it's buying regional medical center for 150 million dollars purchase would save the only hospital equipped to handle heart attacks and >> strokes in the city. kron four's jack moment reports. >> today was a huge, huge, really. >> for myself for everybody that i've been working with. >> lora sandoval is a respiratory therapist at regional medical center. the hospital was for years. the only hospital in east side, san jose able to handle heart attacks and strokes. but since it started shutting down services, sandoval has been taking on shifts. a good samaritan in west san jose. you know, obviously it hasn't been easy road, but after fears of layoffs and the hospital losing more services, the county of santa clara says

it's coming through to buy the hospital for 150 million dollars. this is a really critical milestone for the community. james williams as the county executive and says the county has until april first to finalize the sale hospital employees will have to reapply for their jobs. but tell kron 4 they were promised to their current positions. the county is. >> here to stay. we're committed employer. we take care of our workforce, knowing that they're the ones who deliver absolutely vital care to the community. really elected county supervisor betty duong says the constant rallies and public pressure to save the hospital paid off. this really started out as a grassroots effort. >> demanding health equity for the rest senate was a refusing to accept the closure of the level 2 trauma center and the county plans to reinstate the trauma center on day one of its ownership. >> which would mean a homecoming for this health care >> and from the side of my father still 3 blocks down the road. i love my community. i

>> bart trains are running on a new schedule tonight. the transit system making those changes today as it starts to upgrade its train control system. kron four's lindsey ford has reaction from riders. >> yeah, not too busy at the lafayette bart station. you can see behind me there's a few people trickling out, but i was able to catch up with some commuters tonight. one tells me that they weren't aware of the new changes, the other who's a frequent commuter tells me that the changes will be somewhat of an adjustment. >> having the trains be on time, it's super crucial. otherwise my i lost an hour. >> alex pereira is familiar with the departure and arrival times from the lafayette bart station. he writes the train daily to commute to san francisco and visit with

family and friends. he says minutes off could mean running late to work and missing out on important moments. be more diligent on scheduling. like even like when i walk here from my apartment. >> getting here on time is crucial because if i miss this at the wait 20 minutes, plus to get on the next train invites first coming back home parts new schedule went into effect monday morning. >> hart says the changes are necessary for the transit agency to upgrade its train control system. the biggest changes for those writing the yellow line from 09:00pm to midnight. it will end at sfo instead of millbrae. meanwhile, trains that run supple in millbrae will run every 15 minutes. neither of which would affect colleen will birds. honestly, with my schedule and usually pulling up the app to see which one i'm going to be catching anyway. but >> i guess it's a little bit more important, too. check the times of arrivals and departures. if they're

hardly any clouds to secure our view. it's the wolf moon is the first. >> full moon of the year 2025, it's a beautiful sight to behold. we have dry conditions and it was very breezy last night. in fact, there was a wind advisory in effect last night. >> and through this morning and then it was canceled because the winds died down a little more quickly than expected. so our winds are not a big factor tonight. high temperatures will today they were to to 10 degrees warmer than normal, which put us at 59 degrees in livermore and as warm a 70 degrees that in san jose air quality today, it deteriorating a little bit over the over the evening. >> and you see a few yellow buttons there in the east bay as well as the north bay. and due to some spoke from canada and also a little bit, perhaps. >> from the fires in southern california. so here's the smoke bay area, air forecasts and you see these offshore winds, 70 pushing whatever particulate matters there off to see because he's persistent. offshore winds

continue. but this time overnight tonight into tomorrow, they're very weak at many, many areas, less than 10 miles per hour. now there's an elongated area of high pressure stretching from the truck, the eastern pacific, all the way up to the pacific northwest. and that is what's bringing us dry conditions and the offshore flow of wind. so my goodness gracious, at least the winds are not strong here, but they're still very strong in southern california. so we will see a few areas of clouds, some high, thin cirrus clouds, perhaps stretching over that ridge tonight. but overall, it's a beautiful shot. we have low temperatures today overnight tonight into tomorrow as cool as 37 degrees. maybe even 34 degrees. and that's why there is a frost advisory in effect for parts of the north bay east bay and parts of the santa clara valley as well as the santa cruz mountains. temperature wise 60's, pretty much everywhere. 60's low 60's for san francisco right along the san francisco bay shoreline, as well as a pacific shoreline. and we

continue with the 60 regime all the way down to palo alto and then the warmest spots would be in the santa clara valley putting 66 degrees for san jose and 60's again through the north bay. as we head toward the coastline. even there temperatures in the 60's. so it's really going to be a lovely day. slightly cooler. then yesterday and today. but we've got a slow cooling trend, especially as we head toward the weekend. we get temperatures back toward normal. but the main thing about this seven-day forecast, no raindrops. yeah. and looks like even toward the end of the month. we still may stay rain drops. we've got our the e- fingers crossed and i keep searching for them. all right. thanks. gotten. >> well, for many people living in santa rosa's coffey park, the devastating wildfires in southern california. bring a memories of their own loss october 2017, the tubbs fire ripped through the north bay community, destroying thousands of homes and properties. coffey park was among the hardest hit. the

neighborhood reduced to rubble. since then, though, the community has rebuild. but for people who live in the area, the wildfires burning in southern california are bringing back some painful memories. the thomas fire killed. 22 people and destroyed nearly 5700 structures. coming up next, in sports, the warriors continue their road trip in toronto taking on the raptors. aaron wilson has the highlights. wilson has the highlights. coming up.
