wildfires in southern california. how they plan to help. >> it's systemic problems which are destroying our health care system these people are responsible for that and health care executives. that was backlash downtown san francisco as a massive pharmaceutical conference is underway. talk more about this coming up. well, good tuesday morning. thank you waking up with us bright and early for the kron. 4 morning news. >> we're still on fire. watch and fire coverage down in southern california. back here at home. e've been contending with those winds. john seibel has an updated look at where we sit today. good morning, john. good morning. yes, we are seeing southern california, the winds very strong. the bay area's calm down, though, which is definitely. >> a nice know for us. but with this com still morning that you're seeing here, we do actually have a are really cold. start to the day. once those winds come down, let's everything settle in. and

that's when you tend to see those colder starts. as you can see, not all that breezy today. we're definitely working our way out of the wind here in northern california. but take a look at how cold temps are mountain view. palo alto, san mateo oakland 39 degrees, livermore and dublin at 32 right now while santa rosa at 33 degrees, it is frigid out there. one of the coldest mornings we've talked about in some time. so you might be a little surprised when you step outside field is really how cold it is. now today is going to be on the calmer side. plenty more sunshine. we are going to be just a little bit above average temperature wise. i'll be talking any changes. we have to know long-term forecast ahead. >> sailing. it's nice to have those calmer winds going to be a little out less as you're making your drive into work this morning, the bay bridge, the richmond center fell only taking you 7 minutes rated firefighters in southern california responding to another fire that sparked last

night. >> this comes as the race continues to contain 2 massive wildfires. talk about it. we're keeping a close eye on the auto fire burning in ventura county. this is footage our sister station down in la ktla. flames popping shortly after 7 last night. they were spreading right near a golf course start crews seem to have the upper hand. now the fire has burned. 56 acres and is percent contained so far? take a look at some of the damage left behind by the palisades fire. it's now 14% contained and has burned nearly 24,000 acres right near pacific palisades. also the eaton fire in altadena and pasadena at 33% contained. that's burned over 14,000 acres. now the death toll from both fires rose to 24 over the weekend. least 17,000 structures, homes, cars, businesses, apartment buildings destroyed. powerful winds have been a key ingredient in the devastation down los angeles. okay. there's a new small brush fire. broke out in the inland

empire. the flames prompted evacuations in riverside county around 5 yesterday evening. firefighters responded to the one rupa fire. they were able to get it handled pretty quickly for progress was stopped on that fire around 6.30. at san jose state. they're keeping a close eye on. the current fire is burning in la county. the university's wildfire interdisciplinary research center. they have a goal of helping california manage the crisis right now the center is forecasting the atmosphere weather and the fires like the palisades fire, the models. they're taking a deeper look into the situation not only in real time, but also in the days to come researchers say most of the work, comes after the fires happen. >> analysis this this deeper understanding of how these fires grow, why they grow the way to do and that internap have, you know, eventually did ground effects to. know how to

piles that remains cut down from springs during the spring from those oak trees and fruit. dennis rain with the fire district says when it comes down a mitigation, reducing feels is the best bet. >> community up in bolinger canyon. that would be at risk from a fire that started here on a western north that could blow embers back up into the canyon where we really couldn't get to him easily. >> also adding that he grew up in southern california, used to work in pacific palisades. he stressed the fire mitigation efforts citing striking similarities between the 2 range there. and back here. happy to the fremont fire department that adding a new company, including a fire truck and 9 firefighters back in 2020, an assessment of the city show need for additional sport. the fire depar-ment is adding that additional fire truck to the station currently serve centerville and as nearby the downtown district. this also means that station, one in 6 will have an engine and trucks tab daily. there's going to be a grand opening

ceremony at 01:00pm with city officials. let's switch gears. millions of people are expected to visit san francisco this week, all for the annual jp morgan healthcare conference. the conference kicked off in union square on monday. it's already creating quite a buzz in the area. attendees are expecting to bring more business to local tells restaurants shops in the downtown area. some local business say they're already getting more customers. this is such an impactful conference to kick off january, which which historically? >> without this type of the conference, is a really slow month in the restaurant business. jp morgan healthcare conference is one of the largest of the year to come san francisco. >> with the health care conference sparked protest at union square on monday. many say the conference. >> is an opportunity for the rich to get richer off the backs of patients. call for sarah stinson has more on that. >> some people yelled at health care conference attendees saying they are fed up with the current system.

50%. undivided interest, the board of supervisors. they're going to take a public vote at an upcoming meeting to seal the transaction. city of alameda. they've announced the sale of building 92 at alameda point the city is looking for buyers with proposals that align with their development goals fills a deadline is april. 1st. in marin county, the board of supervisors are considering a rate increase for the marin sanitary service. the rate adjustment would add about $0.50 per month for the company's residential service package for an estimated monthly total $55 and $0.92 more. unsanitary service says the rate change will increase 2025 if approved. and les whole has a new interim fire chief officer gonzalez is of laminated and serve the city for years as i was as the fire department will be a progressive organization that provides leadership and high quality safety for the community.

>> 14 look outside this morning. another crystal clear start were not as windy as we were yesterday, but we certainly are colder. so as you're getting out there, make sure you are bundled up a lot of us like oakland down in the 30's right now. a lot of the bayshore there, too. and we are seeing just a very slight offshore breeze, at least for the bay now for southern california, winds are still stronger so we can appreciate the fact that here locally we are getting a little bit of relief. we still do have high wind warnings and advisories all across the southern half of the state. so something that we are looking at very closely and that fire danger does remain critical for southern neighbors to, in fact, winds will likely be picking up a little bit further later today for those in socal, you can see that we don't have need chances of rain ahead of us in this forecast is bone dry from the sierra the bay area to southern california. nothing really coming through and looking likely through the end

of january. so this is a historically dry month for so many areas. now, temperatures right back to the 60's for most of us today, a few 50's at the cotstline. but all in all, temps are still a bit above average for this time of year. low 60's with that sunshine and calmer winds is a nice pairing. you will enjoy it. likely south bay temperatures. san jose at 66 santa clara at 65 east bay, not much different fremont at 63. same in dublin while oakland at 61 degrees today, north bay temps are in the mid 60's for a lot of us. napa at 64 degrees while nevado petaluma and santa rosa at 63. a look ahead. does show calmer conditions. but just as clear and dry as we have been 60's for much of the rest of the week with a few 50's mixed in next week. roadways this morning doing all right. 8 minutes at the bay bridge. nothing holding you up. no need for the metering lights. just yep. richmond center fell rolling at the limit. that's at 7 minute crossing the golden gate. much calmer than it was yesterday. look at that

crystal clear. not a car on the road this morning. all right, john, thank you for that. to san francisco police officers were taken to the hospital after crashing into a building during a chase. >> this happened just before 3.30, monday morning, right near 9th and howard street in the city. so neighborhood police said he spotted a car, been involved in a chase on sunday, tried to pull it over again. the pursuit ended in the part hola neighborhood. when police say the suspect crashed into a pole and the officers crashed into a building. this happened right near san bruno and paul avenues. the suspects took off, but they were later arrested. the officers are expected to be okay. and in the north bay, sandra fell. police helped out the rohnert park police capturing a suspect that try to ram their car into an officer's car. that photos of the scene provided by sandra fell police as our pd learned that a felony crime happened back last week owner part now the cars in full was put into a license plate reader. according to police, the car was found or sonoma state university rohnert park.

police tried to stop the car but the suspects allegedly rammed their car into the officer's car. the suspect identified by police as casey. just back. that drove the wrong way on one on one. and officer then uses card up in the car against the concrete wall in the shoulder. back at a brief stand-off with police before he was taken into custody that was taken to the hospital for medical clearance before being booked into jail. that is now facing multiple felony counts. san francisco immigrant rights commission holding a special hearing last night to address the concerns of immigrants in san francisco as president elect trump is set to take office next monday, representatives from various immigration advocacy groups highlighting resources available to migrants living in the bay area as well as providing recommendations on how to handle potential policy changes. the commission will now develop a new set of recommendations to address potential policy changes as that new administration takes office. time now, 5.18, governor gavin newsom

expanding his special legislative session to taking on donald trump. it's got include billions of dollars to help with states wildfire response capital course money. wallace reports. the governor says expanding the special legislative session to increase funds for the state's fire response will help victims, but republicans are calling on him to end the other part of the special session aimed at taking on. >> donald trump. as the fires rage in southern california. governor gavin newsom is now calling for his special legislative session. a session originally scheduled to prepare for and take on the trump administration to now also include a component responding to the wildfires. saying the new component of the session aims to allocate 2 and a half billion dollars toward the state's emergency fire response, including recovery and cleanup or state assistance to rebuild schools and more spending for wildfire preparedness and his announcement. the governor wrote this in part, quote, california is organizing a

marshall plan to help los angeles rebuild faster and stronger to the people of los angeles. we have your back. >> we're going to move heaven and earth. >> to get la read to be clear, the special session will still include its original goal of allocating 25 million dollars to the attorney general to help fund a future lawsuit against the trump administration. it will also add another 25 million dollars to assist with immigration legal services within the state democratic assembly member alex lee fully supports that. amid concerns over mass deportations and trump's threats to withhold certain emergency federal aid as a member of the special session committee island. sure that will continue fight against all the crazy trump policies that harm every detail plans. and that's what's important to trump of california in this way. but republicans at this press conference called on democratic leaders to work with trump, not fight him. they want the governor to stop the special session on trump and the stead create a new one on fires in the state's insurance crisis. look, we called for the special session on love fire. so if he's following our lead in doing

>> well, a 15 year-old is in police custody, oakland in connection to a shooting that killed a man. police say the shooting happened the day after christmas on foothill boulevard just before 4 in the evening and a gofundme page. the victim's son wrote his dad was shot in h right. his dad was shot in the heart right in front of him. police did not say what led to the shooting, but according to the gofundme, it happened after 3 teens robbed the victim's son of a scooter and the victim went outside to try to find the trail to get the scooter back.

police in san jose investigating the city's first homicide of the year. this happened just after 10 saturday on loma verde drive. police say they got to the scene. they found a man who'd been shot. he died at the hospital. we don't have any opword on an arrest this morning. a suspected dui crash turning deadly in san jose. police say the victim was hit by a car sunday night walking in the intersection of linciln avenue and loan us. the driver taken into custody and is facing dui and manslaughter charges. this now march san jose second traffic and pedestrian death of the new year. now arrested after police say he ran into a car several times because he was a set with the drivers, high beams being on this happened just before 4 monday morning, right near pacific boulevard. lori meadows drive in tale. police say 62 year-old frank falcon crashed into the car about 3 times and then drove off and police tried to stop him. he was later arrested and booked into jail. at a man custody after police say he shot at a bus driver in san francisco. this happened

around 6 monday morning, right near 4th and berry street in the city's mission bay neighborhood. the 7 men shot of the driver and then ran off. they were not hurt. police say they later found that suspect and they put him into custody. still ahead, the kron morning news. thousands of families returned home scorch neighborhoods. others are still waiting for the green to hear from a man taken refuge right here in the bay area. >> and security is expected to be tight ahead of a major conference in union square. has more turn today. a live has more turn today. a live look at the day ahead. c

>> all right. welcome back to the kron. 4 morning news. before you head out the door, you need to know how the forecast is going to play a role in your daily activities. john triples been tracking that morning, john. yeah, coming down for us arena, which is definitely ok news that yesterday was a bit of a breezy one, especially earlier on in the day, looking from mount tam, this camera has no shape to it this morning. so much calmer. then it was yesterday. and in fact, a lot of our wind speeds have come to 5 miles per hour, if not even less than that. couple of times today, you may feel a breeze up in the delta, but not altogether. a windy one like yesterday started now temperature wise. we're in the 30's for a lot of us com mornings like this can add up to cold starts oakland at 39 right now. livermore dublin at 32 santa rosa at 33 degrees right now. just downright cold for so many areas. and in fact, a lot of us are under frost advisories. that includes the south bay, the inland east bay and the north bay, too. these will remain in effect through 09:00am this morning. now as we move into

address. it will be one of her final appearances before moving out of white house next week. we're also expecting to see those protesters return this morning were now reyna. back to you. all right, kelly, thank you for that report. >> a life-saving deal for hundreds of 1000 people living in east side of san jose. the county of santa clara announced monday they're gonna by regional medical center for 150 million dollars. the purchase would save only hospital equipped to handle heart attacks and strokes in the san jose. that moment has a report. >> today was a huge, huge, really. >> for myself for everybody that i've been working with. >> lora sandoval is a respiratory therapist at regional medical center. the hospital was for years. the only hospital in east side, san jose able to handle heart attacks and strokes. but since it started shutting down services, sandoval has been taking on shifts. a good samaritan in west san jose. you know, obviously it hasn't

been easy road, but after fears of layoffs and the hospital losing more services, the county of santa clara says it's coming through to buy the hospital for 150 million dollars. this is a really critical milestone for the community. james williams as the county executive and says the county has until april first to finalize the sale hospital employees will have to reapply for their jobs but tell kron 4 they were promised to their current positions. >> what i've heard when i've met with employees at regional is a tremendous amount of excitement. the county is here to stay. we're committed employer. we take care of our workforce, knowing that they're the ones who deliver absolutely vital care to the community. really elected county supervisor betty duong says the constant rallies and public pressure to save the hospital paid off. this really started out as a grassroots effort. >> demanding health equity for the rest essential refusing to accept the closure of the level 2 trauma center and the county plans to reinstate the trauma center on day one of

its ownership. >> which would mean a homecoming for this health care worker, everybody that knows worked with me knows that. >> and from the side of my father still 3 blocks down the road. i love my community. i missed my community. >> i'm happy. i'm excited to go back boys with the hospital told me that with new leadership, they hope that regional medical center can bring back its maternity ward, bringing back vital birthing resources to eastside san jose, which has not been here since the word closed several years ago. reporting any side. san jose. jackie moment kron 4 news. >> well, in the east bay, the county of alameda closer to finalizing the oakland coliseum deal. the deal would allow the oakland acquisition company known as only see state over the county's 50%. undivided interest it has already finalized acela greenwood oac with 2 longstanding goals for the county. the coliseum will be under control of us all owner to make decisions. also, the county will be out of a sports and entertainment business

allowing them to refocus money to other areas. the board of supervisors vote at an upcoming meeting to complete that transaction. and the city of alameda. they've announced the sale of building 92. that's a alameda point. after issuing a request for proposals, cities ready to part with that historic property located on west ranger avenue in the formet world war 2 era naval air station building. 92 is part of alameda points ongoing. redevelopment. it's located right near other adaptive reuse projects. the city is looking for buyers with poses that align with their developmental goals. the proposal deadline is april. 1st. it's morning tens of thousands of people are under evacuation orders because of the fires in southern california. how was rob nesbitt has been talking with residents who are still unable to get back to their homes and they're taking refuge right here in the bay area. >> i've talked with several people who came to the bay area because of the bad air quality in la others were

thankful to still have their home standing. and one couple whose family's home was destroyed over the weekend. some people who had to be evacuated from their neighborhoods in southern california were given the green light to go back to their homes. but many have been advised to stay away from areas like the palisades and altadena because there are still active fires. nearly a week after the first place started. one of those families is tell for. thompson's parents were evacuated. their altadena home around 02:00am wednesday drove maybe a block and a half and saw flames. >> and wasn't expected to sign that timing quickly turned back around. >> and by the time go back to our they are already packing up. the eaton fire turned their home into this. everyone in the family got out safely. >> been staying at a hotel while they wait to be allowed back into the neighborhood. a lot of uncertainty. there's a lot of fear. >> lot of concerns surrounding not just their immediate safety. but you know what

their life is going to look like after thompson has chosen to stay with his family during mandatory evacuations, but others like dylan henley chose to leave, fly to san francisco to stay with his godmother while the fires rage on what really started add on to the hollywood area was the canyon fire. >> that is just a mile away from mean, you could just see kind of pouring down air quality is extremely poor in la. and halle is waiting for conditions to improve because of a lung condition. getting the grim updates to the news and social media of what his friends and neighbors are going thru. i think there's a bit of >> resilience inside to hold it together. but don't think something like that is it's easy. like process right then and there to this on and grew up california issued a moratorium friday on insurance companies. >> to prevent them from canceling or not renewing policies and wildfire impacted areas. thompson has been staying with his parents to try to help them with filing insurance claims but says the process has been extremely difficult with long wait times and very little answers

well, >> good morning, reyna. so that open door policy, 7 years old, but it has expired and soon and we will check it out. there will be signs all over starbucks in north america say you're welcome to stay here. but yeah, have to pay. and by the way of obviously, if you walk around and if you want to go to starbucks to use the restroom, even if you don't have to buy a cup of coffee. well, now you do. they have changed that policy say it's for the betterment of all customers. they have seen a lot of disruptions over the past few years. the policy actually started back in 2018 because of a national controversy. this was out of philadelphia where 2 african-american men there were waiting inside starbucks. they had not ordered anything simply waiting for a business partner to arrive. that's when they were told to leave. that's when police officers got involved. that's when
