calmer conditions, right? all right, john, thanks for that, ok? because those calmer conditions out there. >> we're starting off a little calmer today. 60 minutes on the bay bridge meter lights are on not as gusty as yesterday. 8 along richmond center fell while the golden gate bridge that 19 minutes. sam, too, rigid 15 darya. james, back to you. thanks a lot. rain are life-saving deal for thousands of people who live in the san jose. the county of santa clara has just announced it will buy regional medical center. fact, the purchase would say the >> only hospital. that's a quick with to handle. basically heart attacks. strokes in the san jose kron. four's check moment has more on the story. >> today was a huge, huge, really. >> for myself for everybody that i've been working with. >> lora sandoval is a respiratory therapist at regional medical center. the hospital was for years. the only hospital in east side, san jose able to handle heart attacks and strokes. but since it started shutting down

services, sandoval has been taking on shifts. a good samaritan in west san jose. you know, obviously it hasn't been an easy road, but after fears of layoffs and the hospital losing more services, the county of santa clara says it's coming through to buy the hospital for 150 million dollars. this is a really critical milestone for the community. james williams as the county executive and says the county has until april first to finalize the sale hospital employees will have to reapply for their jobs. but tell kron 4 they were promised to their current positions. >> what i've heard when i've met with employees at regional is a tremendous amount of excitement. the county is here to stay. we're committed employer. we take care of our workforce, knowing that they're the ones who deliver absolutely vital care to the community. really elected county supervisor betty duong says the constant rallies and public pressure to save the hospital. >> paid off. this really started out as a grassroots effort demanding health equity for the rest senate was a refusing to accept the closure

of the level 2 trauma center and the county plans to reinstate the trauma center on day one of its ownership. >> which would mean a homecoming for this health care worker, everybody that knows worked with me knows that. >> and from the side of my father still 3 blocks down the road. i love my community. i missed my community. >> i'm happy. excited to go lawyers with the hospital told me that with new leadership, they hope that regional medical center can bring back its maternity ward, bringing back vital birthing resources to eastside san jose, which has not been here since the word closed several years ago. reporting any side. san jose. jackie moment kron 4 news. >> well, in the east bay, the county of alameda is closer to finalizing the oakland coliseum deal. there's a deal that would allow the oakland acquisition company known ac to take over the county's 50%.

undivided interest. oakland has already finalized the sale agreement ac with 2 longstanding goals for the county. the coliseum will be under control of a sole owner to make decisions that should help out going forward. also, the county will be out of the sports and entertainment business altogether, allowing them to focus their money on other areas. the board of supervisors will vote at an upcoming meeting to complete the transaction. >> time now 603 to jp morgan healthcare conference underway in san francisco. this what? yeah, it's expected to draw thousands of people and add millions of dollars to the local economy. kron four's. joey horta though live from union square where there's an increase insecurity. good morning, joey. >> good morning, james and darya. yeah. we've already seen several police officers out here around the westin saint francis were cruiser continuing to put up barricades early this morning as they secure the conference center. this is the first big health care of a sense the ceo of united healthcare was shot and killed in new york city

last month. protesters gathered here monday in union square for the first and the conference saying they're fed up with the current health care system. they want to help public takeover rather of the industry, which they say is putting profits over people. this is like the super bowl of health care. this is where everybody comes to kick off the year and talk about all the innovation that's happening in pharma. biotech and medicines are trying to make an >> meet and mix and mingle. so it's a great opportunity for i've been coming to this conference for 15 years and i've never seen so many police officers at the jp morgan conference ever before. so i think it really double down on security. >> it shall be the conference later on today. again, she says and several thousands are expected to attend this conference here throughout the next couple of days, all the way through thursday. the first lady doctor jill biden, will be the keynote speaker here later on today. and so we're expecting to more security as the day evolves here with her rival. protesters do say that they'll

be returning as well. back to you. lots to follow. joey, thank you. >> 605, is the time. and another story that we're following this morning as a 15 year-old who in police custody in oakland in connection with a shooting that killed a man that shooting happened the day after christmas on foothill boulevard. it around 4 in the afternoon and there's a gofundme page where the victim's son writes that his father was shot in the heart right in front of him. police say have what haven't said, what led up to the shooting. but on that gofundme post, it says that the shooting happened after 3 teenagers robbed the victim's son of his scooter. and then you went outside to try to fau vine the robbers. and that's when he was shot. >> well, 606, is the time and let's go to now the latest out of southern california where firefighters in will change the visual here on the screen

in a minute. but firefighters say that a fire that sparked in the flames last night happened in this comes as the race continues to contain 2 massive wildfires. at this point. we're keeping a close eye on the auto fire as it's being called. it's burning in ventura county. this is actually footage from our sister station, ktla. flames popped up shortly after 7 o'clock last night. this really was the last thing they needed. flames were spreading near a golf course in oxnard crew seemed to have the upper hand now, but the fire has burned. 56 acres so far. containment still sitting right around 0% will find out more in about an hour. typically around 7 o'clock. we get updated numbers from the cal-fire directors down there. all right. let's take a look at some of the damage left behind by the palisades fire, which is currently 14% contained this morning. it's burned nearly 24,000 acres near pacific palisades. meantime, the eaton fire in

altadena and pasadena. that's about 33% contained at this moment. it's burned a little more than 14,000 acres so far and you can see the damage done by that fire there. the death toll from the fires continues. >> to rise and we're continuing to counted at this point. it's 24 people. but again, that could rise as authorities go into the now at the 17,000 structures that have burned, many of those structures include the homes and businesses that have been destroyed. the powerful winds were the key ingredient and the devastating fires. and wildfire. researchers at san jose state are keeping a close eye on the fires. >> there in the wildfire interval disciplinary. >> research center. and the goal is to help california manage fire risk and crisis. right now the center is forecasting the atmosphere weather and the fires that

combined to create things like the palisades disaster. they used models to get a deeper look at the situation in real time and also in days to come, they say that most of the work is through looking at fires and it comes after the fire. >> analysis this this deeper understanding of how these fires grow, why they grow the way to do and that internal have, you know, eventually did ground effects to. know how to better fight these fires. we know patterns to look out for because we studied them with the simulations. >> researchers believe that california is going to end up having longer fire seasons and that they're going to get worse and they also wouldn't be surprised if there were more fires in urban areas in the future. >> well, meantime, fire crews in the east bay spent the day working to reduce the fire risk in the bay area with crews out in the moraga orinda fire conducted some prescribed burns right behind saint

mary's college in this was a video that recorded of them doing that work. now the advantage of this unusually dry january is that it gave them a chance to burn some of these piles of trimmings that were cut down last spring from oak trees. dentist rain. the fire district commander says that when it comes down to mitigation, reducing fuels is their best bet. >> there's a community up in bolinger canyon that would be at risk from a fire that started here on a western north that could blow embers back up into the canyon where we really couldn't get to him easily. >> yeah, rain is adding that he grew up in southern california. he used to work in pacific palisades and he stressed that the fire mitigation efforts. are striking. similar similarities between the terrain there and here. well, our parent company nexstar, by the way, is partnering with the red cross to raise money for wildfire victims in southern california. if you'd like to help, all you have to do is scan that qr code that you see

>> we are back at 6.14 and here are 4 things to know today marin county, the board of supervisors is considering a rate increase. former in the sanitary services. this rate adjustment would add about $0.50 per months for the company residential service package for an estimated monthly total of $55 and $0.92

rinse. sanitary service says this rate change will increase in 2025 this year, if approved. vallejo, meanwhile, has a new interim fire. chief arthur gonzales is a vallejo native and has served the city for years. gonzalez says the fire department will be a progressive organization that provides leadership and high quality safety for the community. wildfire researchers at san jose state are keeping a close eye on the current fires burning down in la county. right now the center is forecasting the atmosphere, weather and fires like the palisades fire through models. they're taking a deeper look into the situation not only in real time, but also in the days to come. and say hello to strawberry. he's one of 10 dogs volunteers with east bay spca brought back from southern california this weekend. the goal is to help shelters there in the la area. make room to take in animals that have been displaced by the fires. if you think you can get strawberry home, give them a call.

>> that emerges definitely important to focus on 2 at this time. if you could do anything to help out with their neighbors in socal, i know every bit is appreciated here locally. we are just sitting really nicely. we've seen our winds calm down with that. we do have a cold morning, but a cold and calm start no movement on the flag in downtown san francisco at the embarcadero right here. we are seeing much calmer conditions up north as our winds have subsided from yesterday. southern california, not so much just yet. we still do have those high wind warnings. red-flag warnings in effect in many cases through tomorrow. and winds are actually expected to pick up a little bit today with that. some still very critical fire danger down south for sure. this low pressure area that's swept right past southern california and us here in the bay to resulted in those offshore winds. but really now we're looking ahead towar s this blocking high. it's stuck and it is not wanting to leave us

with that extended outlook is really showing dry conditions likely up to the very end of the month, if not beyond that. so definitely a dry, dry january right in the middle of what supposed to be the wet season. 60's for your daytime highs pretty much across the board today. couple 50's mixed in at the coastline. today is going to be a little closer to our seasonal average is just a few degrees above average. but paired with that sunshine, it certainly does feel good. san jose at 66 degrees, dublin pleasanton at 63 today. 62 for oakland and berkeley. looking a little bit further north, some smid 60's and napa. you're at 64 today. as for next 7 days, there's not a ton change going on here that holding pattern. absolutely continues through the rest of the week, the weekend and into next week. reda. >> bay area highways and bridges seeing a lot more green than red. some highways that are starting to pick up a

that basically say you can hang out inside starbucks. but yeah, half to buy something and don't ask us to use the restroom unless you buy something. the open door policy actually went into effect back in 2018 out of when at that particular time, 2 african-american men, they were inside the store waiting for a business partner. they did not anything at the time. that's when employees came up to the men and said they had to leave. they got so out of hand that police officers are actually called in racial overtones. and that's when howard schultz, the ceo of starbucks at the time he implemented the open door policy. but 7 years later, starbucks has decided it's been more disruptive as far as the people inside not paying customers. and that's why they claim this is the better man for everybody involved. they will be training their employees on how to handle how

they can approach the customer than on paying customer. whether or not it needs to be escalated to involve police officers. but the bottom line is you're more than welcome to go there. but you have to pay back to you. all right. we'll thank you very much. 6.19, is the time. and today in the east bay, members of the teamsters union >> are going to be at costco rallying. it's a practice picket line. >> at the hayward location. and that is ahead of the january 31st expiration of the workers contract the teamsters deal with costco covers about 18,000 workers nationwide. they are demanding the strongest contract that they can get and they say they're prepared to strike if the company fails to deliver the practice pick, it begins at 8 our sorry, 11 o'clock this morning. san francisco superior court clerks have ratified a contract with court management and that includes

more training and we're staffing. he may remember the clerks went on a one-day strike during that many murder trial and san francisco in october, the union that represents the workers says that the contract was ratified on january 9th. the clerks wanted better training and they wanted to better staffing in the court system as well. the contract now mandates that court management provide ongoing training for all court employees and have training manuals in place by may. 1st. >> well, san francisco immigrant rights commission held a special hearing last night addressing the concerns of immigrants in the city as president elect donald trump is set to take office next monday. representatives from various immigration advocacy groups highlighted resources available to migrants living in the bay area as well as providing recommendations on how to handle potential policy changes. the commission will

now develop a new set of recommendations to address potential policy changes as the new administration takes office. meantime, the state of california has taken historic step to support black students in higher education. a new law authored by former state senator steve bradford aims to support colleges and universities committed to fostering black student success by creating the nation's first black serving institution designation. now currently 39 community colleges in california meet eligibility requirements alongside other public and private nonprofit colleges in the state. there will also be a podcast launching this week by the i can campaign. it will talk about how colleges are working to earn that designation. the first episode will be released this coming thursday. >> it's 6.22. still ahead on kron 4 morning news. sonoma county deputies and turned into a high-speed chase in windsor. we'll take a look at how it ended. and researchers at san jose state university

south neighboring law enforcement got into this as well. and they drove into the opposite lanes of traffic as sandra fell. officer used his cruiser. that to pan the car against the wall. >> and back. >> had a brief standoff with the police and he was eventually taken into custody. now facing multiple charges. in windsor. another stolen car led to a pursuit by the sonoma county sheriff's department. here you can see it overhead. this was yesterday a driver southbound highway 101 going towards central windsor in a stolen vehicle. then it ran over some spike strips and that eventually is what stopped it. he was apprehended and taken into custody. as you can see right there. >> well, santa rosa woman rescued after being trapped inside an apartment that was on fire. it happened about 7.40 last night. it was at a housing complex on mendocino avenue right near chen. 8 road

fire crews arrived at the scene found that woman attempting to escape the fire by climbing out of a window. they were able to get her to safety. fire officials say that fire may have been accidental, but they're investigating. still ahead on the kron 4 morning news commuters reacting to the new part schedule that is now in effect. changes come transit agencies upgrading its train control system. control system. >> we'll have the full story.

all of a bridge is at 19. thankfully, we're not as windy as we yesterday. 31, which refill bridge and the golden gate bridge. 37 of the tolls 20 minutes. all james, back to you. thank you. reyna this morning. 10's of thousands of people are under evacuation orders because of the fires in southern california. kron four's rob nesbitt has been talking with residents who are still unable to get back into their homes and have been taking refuge here in the bay area. >> i've talked with several people who came to the bay area because of the bad air quality in la. >> others were thankful to still have their home standing. and one couple whose family's home was destroyed over the weekend. some people who had to be evacuated from their neighborhoods in southern california were given the green light to go back to their homes. but many have been advised to stay away from areas like the palisades and altadena because there are still active fires. nearly a week after the first place started. one of those families is tell for. thompson's parents were evacuated. their altadena home around 02:00am

wednesday. drug may be a block and a half and saw flames. >> and wasn't expecting to sign that timing quickly turned back around. and by the time go back to our they were already, you know, packing up the eaton fire turned their home into this. everyone in the family got out safely. >> been staying at a hotel while they wait to be allowed back into the neighborhood. a lot of uncertainty. there's a lot of fear. >> lot of concerns surrounding not just immediate safety. but you know what their life is going to look like after thompson has chosen to stay with his family during mandatory evacuations, but others like dylan henley chose to leave, fly to san francisco to stay with his godmother while the fires rage on what really started to get out onto the hollywood area was the canyon fire. >> that is just a mile away from mean, you could just see kind of pouring down the mountain air quality extremely poor in la. and halle is waiting for conditions to improve because of a lung condition. getting the grim updates to the news and social

a half billion dollars towards the state emergency fire response and that includes recovery and cleanup and more assistance to rebuild schools. also more spending for wildfire preparedness in his announcement. here's some of what newsom said. quote, california is organizing a marshall plan to help los angeles rebuild faster and stronger to the people of los angeles. we have your back. but republicans are calling on newsom and the democrats to work with president trump not fight him. the president-elect has threatened to block disaster relief to california and he soon will have the power get to, you know, some at control over whether or not we get aid. the republicans want the governor to concentrate only on wildfires and where the funds will be spent. >> we called for the special session fire. so if he's

following our lead in doing that cool, great, you know, but lose the special session idea that trump reef in california because it's not helpful. >> the governor says he's ready to sign any of the special session bills that get to his desk before trump takes office next monday. >> ballot >> there you hear and see napa firefighters as they're continuing to battle and help out in southern california. they're working to reduce the fires and respond to them. here's video as they were saving some homes in the palisades fire. meantime, there's a crew from crockett and they're working on the altadena fire. that's called the eaton fire us. well. they sent 4 fire engines or firefighters and an engine helping crews down in southern california. >> happening today, the fremont fire department now adding a new company, including a fire truck and 9

firefighters was back in 2020 that an assessment of the city showed a need for the additional support. the fire department is adding that additional fire truck to the station that currently serve centerville and is nearby the downtown district. this also means that station one and 6 will have an engine and a truck staff daily. there will be a grand opening ceremony at 01:00pm. city officials will be there. in the north bay. has a new interim fire. chief arthur gonzales is affiliate native. any served the city for years. gonzalez says the fire department will be a progressive organization that provides leadership and high quality safety for the community. city officials say the recruitment process to select a new permanent fire chief will happen soon. >> police in san jose are investigating that city's first homicide of the year which happened around 10 o'clock saturday night on loma verity drive. that is where a man had been shot and he ended up dying at the hospital. we don't have any word of arrests yet this morning. a dui crash

turns deadly in san jose. the victim was hit by a car sunday night walking in the intersection of lincoln avenue and loan as street. the driver was taken into custody and faces dui and manslaughter charges. that is san jose. second traffic and pedestrian death of the new year. >> well, the man now in custody after police say he shot a bus driver in san francisco. it happened around 6 o'clock monday morning near 4th and perry streets in the city's mission bay neighborhood. police say the man shot at the driver and then ran off. nobody was hurt. police say they later found that suspect, though, got him into custody. well, the sonoma county sheriff's office has arrested a woman from the lay up for what they say are several fraudulent ebt card transactions. deputies say it started with a traffic stop with one recognizing the woman is someone wanted for ebt fraud. she provided a fake passport which then led to her arrest and eventual search of

her home. deputies recovered about 115 baby formula containers and suspected stolen alcohol. >> it's 6, 37 and in the south bay, santa clara county is getting 12 million dollars to install more electric vehicle charging stations. project includes installing 237 ev charging ports spread all throughout san jose. most are going to be located public facilities like at libraries, community centers and parks. san jose's mayor matt mahan says the new stations will make ev charging more accessible and convenient for south bay residents. trains are running in a new schedule. the transit system just made the changes to upgrade their train control system. yeah. and kron four's lindsey ford has reaction from some bart riders. >> having the trains be on time, it's super crucial. otherwise my i lost an hour.

during a chase. the chase was about 03:30am, in the morning yesterday near 9th and howard streets in the soma neighborhood when police spotted a car involved in a chase the day before on sunday. so they tried to pull it over and the pursuit began. it ended in the portola neighborhood where the suspect vehicle crashed into a pole and then the officers crashed into a building that was near san bruno and paul avenues. the suspects took off. they were later arrested, though. and the officers involved in that crash are expected to be okay. and the francisco police department just announced the passing of one of their canines. his name was harlow are sorry, carlo. he started his work with the department in 2012 and over the last 12 years, carlo was involved in hundreds of narcotics and money investigations throughout the state seizures that totaled 4 million dollars in his time off. carlo enjoyed
