some controversy. yeah, and also some celebration because thousands of people are coming millions of dollars expected to come into the local economy bay at demonstrators as well. kron four's joey horta. >> live from union square where security is certainly on the high side. joey. >> absolutely. james and darya. we have seen dozens of san francisco police officers out here this morning. they have barricades set up around the westin. saint francis is well to keep protesters and anyone else away who doesn't belong there. this is an invite only event and it is jam packed. thousands expected to attend. it's the first big health care conference since the ceo of united healthcare was shot and killed in new york city last month. jp morgan just announcing this morning that daniel pinto, its president and chief operating officer, is stepping in stepping down rather in june. lot of people are upset. those protesters saying that health care industry is putting profits over people. they want that to change. we spoke with

a few people who are attending today. here's what they're saying about safety in san francisco. >> i think security is very good. things have just gotten a great job. the police presence is significant here. i have felt uncomfortable on one or 2 occasions when walking by people i have it engage me verbally. i think the security has been top i have notes. >> for my safety and all, you know, i think the cities and a good job trying do the best they can to make this up. a positive event. >> i've been coming to this conference for 15 years and i've never seen so many police officers at the jp morgan conference ever before. so i think it really double down on security. now, according to the san francisco travel association, this conference is one of the most significant in this city. >> bringing in estimated 92 million dollars to the local economy here in this four-day conference, first lady doctor jill biden is

expected to deliver the keynote address later on today. and so dry that a lot of interest with that. we expect to see protesters later on as well promising to come back and voice their concerns again about the health care industry in particular. and so we'll be out here that keep you updated on what's going on for now. back to you. joey, thank you. >> 803, is the time. and also health care news. and another big story. the only hospital equipped to handle heart attacks and strokes in east san jose is likely to stay open. thanks to the county santa clara county just announced a tentative deal 2 by regional medical center last year. the hospital shut down its level 2 trauma center and that move sparked a lot of concern from residents. they protested and rally. they were afraid that with that hospital closing that somebody has a heart attack or stroke, they have to travel much further. she get life-saving care, putting them at risk. now the county plans to purchase the hospital and preserve the services.

>> in doing so that we're gonna be able to restore the level 2 trauma center at regional that was closed last august. this is about saving lives. this is about access to critical care where minutes mattered. and being able to bring regional medical center in to the county's health care system. it's going to help us ensure high-quality integrated. excellent care. >> the deal is still tentative at this pint, but they're hoping to have it complete. and the county control by april. 1st. >> in the east bay, the county of alameda is closer to finalizing the sale of the oakland coliseum. that deal would allow the oakland acquisition company better known as oac to take over the county's half of the property. the city of oakland already finalized the sale of its have see already. the county has 2 goals with this sale. first is to bring the coliseum under the control of the sole owner. so that person can then make

all the final decisions. and then secondly, to take the county out of the sports and entertainment business, which would free up money for other things. the board of supervisors will vote to complete the transaction at an upcoming meeting. >> a 15 year-old is in police curtody in oakland now for a deadly shooting that shooting happened the day after christmas on foothill boulevard was about 4 in the evening that a man was shot and according to his family's gofundme page, the victim's son says that his dad was shot in the heart rgght in front of him because the sun says somebody was trying to steal 3 people trying to steal his scooter. and the dad went out and tried to find out what was going on or recover the scooter. and that's when the shooting happened. if you can help, there is a gofundme page. happening now, police in santa rosa are looking for the man who followed a group of girls who are leaving school. these are photos of the vehicle that police are looking for. a black four-door

2008 model jeep cherokee. and there's some damage, as you can see here on the left back side. what happened was last friday afternoon. it was a at the school. nearly murray street in providence court that the girls were walking. the man invited them into his vehicle, as they said, no one was following them going in reverse. he is described as a white man with light brown hair and a beard estimated to be about 25 years old, 5 foot 5 and maybe 12130 pounds. >> well, new this morning, san francisco firefighters put out a fire out at the 600 block of ella street. this is video provided by the fire department. you can see they had one of their ladder trucks extended near the hotel 6, 9, 1, one caller said a scooter had caught on fire. right now crews are working to clean up all the damage. meantime, fire crews in the east bay spent the day working to rescue maria should say reduce the fire risk in that area. we're talking about the moraga orinda fire district. they

conducted some prescribed burns behind saint mary's college. our cameras recorded what it was they were doing the advantage. they say of this unusually dry january is that allowed them to burn some of the piles of trimmings that they had collected from the spring of last year. all the oak trees that they had pruned. dennis farina with the fire district says that when it comes down to mitigation, reducing fuels is their best bet. >> there's a community up in bolinger canyon that would be at risk from a fire that started here on a western north that could blow embers back up into the canyon where we really couldn't get to him easily. >> yeah. he also added that he grew up in southern california. he used to work in pacific palisades and he stressed that fire mitigation efforts that they're doing citing that striking similarities between the terrain there and here he doesn't want those fires breaking out here. >> wildfire researchers at san jose state are studying the fires that are burning in southern california right now so that they can help us in the future. the university has

a wildlife interdisciplinary research center and they're working to help the state manage the crisis that is growing for wildfires right now. the center is forecasting how the atmosphere and the weather influence fires like this. the palisades fire and their models make real-time predictions. but they say that most of the work that they do after comes after a fire. >> this analysis this this deeper understanding of how these fires grow, why the grove, the way to do and that internal have, you know, eventually did ground effects to. know how to better fight these fires. we know patterns to look out for because we studied them with the simulations. >> the researchers believe that california is going to have longer and worst fire seasons and they wouldn't be surprised either if we see more areas that are in urban places, catch fire. let's take a look at the newest video that we have. this is live coming from southern california in ventura county. it's called the auto fire.

this is footage from our sister station, ktla. they're out and a chopper looking at the damage from she look at entire neighborhood really flattened. there is a fire now, as we just said, a new one that is prompting evacuations and ventura county. it said it in oxnard. it's only about 5 acres now 0% contained. and you can already see so much damage done there in southern california. >> we'll take a look at some of the damage left behind by the palisades fire. that was about 14% contained this morning and it's burned nearly 24,000 acres near pacific palisades. they're working right now to continue on that fire. meantime, the eaton fire in altadena and pasadena. that's about 33% contained. so about 3rd of the way there that was burned a little more than 14 1000 acres. and the death toll from both of these fires has gone up to 24 now

>> it's 14 or just but cold morning so far with so many of us down in the 30's. but we have the sunshine. and even though the camera's moving a little bit here at mount tam winds have definitely come

down for the bay area. we are seeing gusts of wind today may be maxing out around 15 to 20 miles per hour. so calm one for us here at home. that is not the case for southern california. in fact, a particularly dangerous situation as we do still see those strong santa ana winds through the day. high wind warnings and red flag warnings both in effect through tomorrow. midday and winds actually going to be picking up a bit towards the middle of the day today. that adds up to extreme fire danger. here's the la metro area. areas of yellow and orange and particular red spots where fire danger is considerably high. it's a pairing of the wind, the low humidity and of course, all the dry brush, low pressure to the south. that's what's impacting our southern california neighbors. high pressure, though, built into the west of us is just this blocking ridge and it will continue to keep all of us try likely to the end of the month in many cases. so there's nothing really coming through to disrupt this dry pattern. not the best news now here

philadelphia, 2 african-american men. they were waiting for a business partner. they did not order anything while they were waiting waiting for them to arrive. and then then all by something. but it exploded to where police officers were called in that for starbucks to start the open door policy where you did not have to buy anything to use the bathroom or stay in the location. well, that is changing because they said now the employees can tap you on the shoulder. if you've been there for quite some time and ask you to leave and of course, you go to the bathroom, you'll have to buy something. so i got reaction from customers this morning. here's their take on possibly getting a code to go to the bathroom. you sometimes it is. it is in effect effects of that's what they decide to do. i mean, it's gonna hurt some peoplf and things of that nature. but then also that goes into. >> maybe the cities of all the county city should think about public bathrooms of thing that nature's for homeless people to as well.

>> so she is actually trying to call out the city, say, ok, starbucks, they are a big places far as people using restrooms and maybe the city's need to step up. some people don't have to go to starbucks to use the restroom as far as their employees. well, according to starbucks, they are being trained on how to handle the situation. and if it gets out of hand, then police officers could possibly get called in. and if you're wondering it, starbucks is leading the charge in all this. they're actually saying they're behind the charge that other restaurants already doing the same thing. interesting. all right. well, thank you. >> 8.18 is the time. and today in the east bay, you may see some costco workers outside of this costco holding a demonstration. they call it a practice pickett. it's going to be outside of the hayward. costco. and this is ahead of the january 31st. as for 31st expiration of their contract,

the teamsters say that they want an agreement that serves their workers better. they represent about 18,000 costco workers nationwide. and they say if they don't get what they want, that they are prepared to strike. this is just again, a practice pickett, informational picket that will begin at 11 o'clock this morning. san francisco superior court clerks have ratified a contract after they picketed. this includes the training and the staffing that they wanted in their new deal. the clerks went on a one-day strike during the name any murder trial in san francisco and october. the union represents the clerks says that this contract is a good deal is ratified january 9th. the clerks will get better training and staffing will be addressed as well. >> well, the san francisco immigrant rights commission held a special hearing last night to address the concerns of immigrants in the city as

president elect donald trump is set to take office next monday, representatives from various immigration advocacy groups highlighted resources that are available to migrants living in the area. they also provide recommendations on how to handle policy changes from the white house. the commission will now take those recommendations and develop a plan. meantime, the state of california has taken a historic step to support black students in higher education. a new law authored by former state senator steven bradford creates the nation's first black serving institution designation and that aims to support colleges and universities committed to fostering black student success. currently, 39 community colleges in california meet eligibility requirements along with other public and private. not profit colleges in the state. there will also be a podcast launching this week by the i can campaign about how colleges are working to earn that designation. the first episode, by the way, will drop this thursday.

>> the city of alameda has announced the sale of building 92 at alameda point after issuing a request for proposals, the city is ready now to part ways with historic property located on west ranger avenue and the former world war 2 era at naval air station. billy 92 is part of alameda points ongoing redevelopment and it's located near other adaptive reuse projects. the city is looking for buyers who have plans that align with their development goals. the proposed deadline is april. 1st. we continue to cover the wildfires in southern california and how the bay area is stepping in to help a nevada coppery is offering fire victims free data recovery services because you can imagine they lost everything in their homes. so the company is called drive savers and they are pledging their expertise in recovering all the things that may have burned up the documents, photos and other items that were damaged in the fires.

>> multiple law enforcement agencies in marin county helped to capture a wrong-way driver that led them on a chase on highway 101, yesterday afternoon, this chase started and rohnert park. police tried to stop a vehicle that was connected to a burglary. the driver was identified as casey back. they say that he rammed one of the officers cars. and went on 101, southbound and then neighboring law enforcement stepped in. that car was driving in the opposite lanes of traffic and sandra fell. police officer finally use their cruiser. they pin that car against a wall. you can see the crash that ended here and then back had a brief standoff with the police and

do get back to the 60's under sunshine much as we did yesterday, right? all right, john, thank you for that. 92 westbound at 101 north and sam, a tail we've been tracking in accident there. >> so there's a little bit slower along the san mateo bridge, not the only bridge that's impacted by that slow-moving commute 15 along the bay bridge this morning. if you are going to be traveling into the city, keep that in mind. 14 along the richmond, sandra fell on your golden gate bridge about 40 minutes about an hour ago. we're at 30. so we've gone up by about 10 minutes. there are your teams. back to you. thanks a lot. 8.30, right now. and this morning, tens of thousands of people are under evacuation orders because the fires in southern california with kron four's rob nesbitt is actually talking to some residents who are still unable to get back to their homes and have been taking refuge here. >> in the bay area. i've talked with several people who came to the bay area because of the bad air quality in la others were thankful to still have their home standing. and one couple whose family's home was destroyed over the weekend. some people who had

to be evacuated from their neighborhoods in southern california were given the green light to go back to their homes. but many have been advised to stay away from areas like the palisades and altadena. >> because there are still active fires. nearly a week after the first place started. one of those families is tell for. thompson's parents were evacuated. their altadena home around 02:00am wednesday drove maybe a block and a half and saw >> and wasn't expecting to sign that timing quickly turned back around. and by the time got back to our they are already packing up. the eaton fire turned their home into this. everyone in the family got out safely. >> been staying at a hotel while they wait to be allowed back into the neighborhood. a lot of uncertainty. there's a lot of fear. lot of concerns surrounding not just their immediate safety. but you know what their life is going to look like after thompson has chosen to stay with his family during mandatory evacuations, but others like dylan henley

chose to leave, fly to san francisco to stay with his godmother while the fires rage on what really started add on to the hollywood area was there canyon fire. >> that is just a mile away from mean, you could just see kind of pouring down. the mountain air quality extremely poor in la. and halle is waiting for conditions to improve because of a lung condition. getting the grim updates to the news and social media of what his friends and neighbors are going thru. i think there's a bit of >> resilience inside to hold it together. but don't think something like that is it's easy just sake process right then and there to this on grew up california issued a moratorium friday on insurance companies to prevent them from canceling or not renewing policies and wildfire impacted areas. thompson has been staying with his parents to try to help them with filing insurance claims but says the process has been extremely difficult with long wait times and very little answers reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> and there's a lot of pressure on the governor right

now during these fires in la. and that's why he has expanded his legislative session to include wildfire response on top of wanting to discuss the fight against the trump administration. newsom wants to allocate 2 and a half billion dollars for the state's emergency fire response. and that would include recovery and cleanup or state assistance to rebuild schools and more spending on wildfire preparedness in his announcement and partners. some rights. california is organizing a marshall plan to help los angeles rebuild faster and stronger and to the people of los angeles. we have your back. republicans, however, are demanding that trump order the democrats and newsom stop trying to fight trump and instead work with him. the president-elect has threatened to block disaster relief to california. the republicans want the governor to focus instead just on the wildfires. >> we called for the special

session on love fire. so if he's following our lead in doing that cool, great, you know, but lose the special session idea trump reef in california. >> because it's not helpful. >> newsom says he's ready to sign any of the special session bills that get to his desk before trump takes office on monday. >> and this is the napa crew that's on the scene in southern california helping to the fires there. a video of the napa firefighters as they respond trying to save burning homes. this is in the palisades fire. we know there are lots of different crews from all around the bay here is the crew from crockett fire. they are on the fire lines in out to dina at neighrhoods doing what they can to save structures. they a crack at sundown for firefighters and an engine. bryn county deployed search and rescue team over the weekend to southern california. they're working on the eaton fire, helping with survivors and trying to assess

the hazards in neighborhoods now that have been burned out 30 people have been sent down to southern california from marin county and the other bay area fire fighting groups are coming from alameda mateo napa, as we said, and also san francisco. >> and happening today, the fremont fire department is going to be adding a new company which includes a fire truck and 9 firefighters. it was back in 2020 that an assessment of the city showed that they had a need for this additional support. so now they've got it. the fire department is adding that additional fire truck to the station that currently serve centerville and is near the downtown district. this also means that station one at 6. we'll have an engine and truck staff daily. there's going to be a grand opening ceremony at 1 o'clock this afternoon with city officials in attendance. meanwhile, elsewhere in the north bay, filet o has a new interim fire. chief arthur gonzales is a vallejo native. he served the city for years.

gonzalez says the fire department under his watch will be a progressive organization that provides leadership and high quality safety for the community. city officials say the recruitment process to select a new permanent fire chief will get underway soon. >> police in san jose are investigating the city's first homicide of the year which happened around 10 o'clock saturday night when a man was found shot on loma verity drive. he was taken to the hospital where he died. police have not said if they have any suspects yet. a dui crash turned deadly in san jose. the victim was hit by a car sunday night while walking at the intersection of lincoln avenue and loan u.s. street. the driver was taken into custody and is facing dui and manslaughter charges. now it's santa was a second traffic and pedestrian deaths of the new year. >> well, a man is in custody now after police say he shot at a bus driver in san francisco. it happened about 6 o'clock monday morning near

4th and berry street in the city's mission bay neighborhood. police say that man shot at the driver and then ran off. luckily the bullet didn't strike. the driver said nobody was hurt, but police say they did later find the suspect and now have him in custody. meanwhile, a sonoma county sheriff's office has arrested a woman from vallejo after what they say were several fraudulent ebt card transactions. deputies say it all started with a traffic stop with one of the officers recognizing the woman is someone wanted for ebt fraud. she provided a fake passport and that led to her arrest and the subsequent search of her home. and you can see here what police say they found inside 115 containers of baby formula and some alcohol which they suspect was stolen. >> in the south bay, santa clara county is getting 12 million dollars to in storage stalled more electric vehicle charging stations. they're gonna have 237 ev charging ports that are going to be spread throughout san jose. most in public places where you might go and spend a

that realization of that and it's also the fruition of that. >> bart says other routes are going to experience some minor changes. they encourage commuters. check the schedule even if it's a regular line because you never know you don't want to get caught. >> well, across the bay area, more than a dozen local transit agencies are making a new pledge to hire small businesses on monday. a bunch of agencies including bart and caltrain and vta. they all signed what's known as the equity in infrastructure project pledge. it's an informal commitment to try and hire historically underrepresented businesses to work on some of their big projects. that means if a transit agencies building a facility, then they'll try and hire small businesses as much as they can, especially those run by women or minorities. >> by increasing the representation of historically underutilized business is we are supporting the economic empowerment and strengthening the fabric of our community. the next 10 years we're looking at about 10 billion dollars right of capital
