9:15 am
seeing calmer winds for the bay area in today should remain that way. southern california, not so much red flag warnings, high wind warnings in effect through tomorrow. middle of the day and absolutely critical fire situation 100% remaining down south. as we do see the la metro all the way down even further south from there in the midst of critical fire danger. strong winds, very dry conditions. we are still seeing that high pressure ridge blocking anything, anything potentially from heading our direction. the u.s. the absolutely dry forecast we have over the next week or 2 likely to be dry towards the end of the month to which is not good news for anyone in the state, particularly not for southern california. 60's for your highs in the city as well. as for most of the coastline today, it is a another mild one today, though, just a little bit above our seasonal averages. we've been running well warmer than average in temperatures have settled down a little bit south bexar, warmest with some mid 60's east bay, mostly low 60's
9:16 am
livermore right at 60 degrees. oakland 62 today, north bay temperatures. also some of our warmer ones. napa at 64 as we move into the rest of the week's forecast. lots of sunshine, nothing coming through interrupt that. we are going to have some cold nights. so prepare those warm winter jackets for evenings, at least reyna. >> and on the san mateo bridge that has just cleared so 9 to westbound east of the toll plaza, all lanes are blocked, fried say maybe about 5 minutes. they will to clear that off of the bridge. so now you're making some decent time there. they right now about 17 minutes. we've been fluctuating between a mile like 14, 17 minutes still around, 70 along. want to want in the keep that in mind. we're busy. 2, 80 82 might be your best bet at this hour and selling down to 2.37. around. 42 minutes darya. james, back to you. >> let's help winners and losers with our financial expert rob black morning route. how are the markets?
9:17 am
>> not great. they started off a little better because the producer price index, which is inflation, the people who make stuff before they sell it to us was up only 2 tenths of one percent. that's good news. it's not very inflationary. market had 8 up 20% year last year, up 20% the year before. it's it's kind of due for a pullback and maybe that's what we're getting because the fed promised not slash interest rates anytime soon. it is not thought. and without that, we have out or any means to carry us through. and we're right at the start of earnings season. some may be our next calluses the next couple of weeks with earnings. >> all right. the i would say story that affects everybody is at some time or another. you had to run into a business. use the bathroom and usually i try to use a chain like that. i think won't mind. and i was like i know where i'm going i'm guilty and i didn't like fries or something for mcdonald's. and i think people count on starbucks for that. but now they're changing their tune.
9:18 am
>> starbucks brought a new ceo last turned turned the company around because they've been slowly slipping. and one of plans is reverse their open door policy, which means you can go in there with a book if you wanted to and read, you can go in there with the computer and do your heart, your work use their internet and use bathrooms. now they're saying, nope, you got to buy and listen to this. i thought this was a bit aggressive. okay going to go into effect late january and they're said in the press release that they're going to train the breeze does too potentially contact local law enforcement to help without getting you out. i like the idea of someone who likes to sit in a cafe. i don't like the fact that ok. well, also there's a complicating factor here because i remember i would go. >> they've give me my receipt. it will have the internet code. so i could nurse that cup of coffee for 4 hours. yeah, i is there a time limit this. we have a time limit but it again, it just shows you that they're trying to turn around the business to make.
9:19 am
>> the core experience for the people who go in and buy and spend money a little bit nicer. all you know, i've gone and recently to talk with a friend i paid for something, but it was nice to have that space that wasn't being used by maybe a college taking the internet taking space. you know. >> okay. well, we'll see what happens. i get when you gotta go. you gotta go somewhere. so i guess whatever what's the cheapest thing on the menu. a bottle of water at all. how much it's going to cost immense or something like 5 hours. all right. so we've talked about and i views out know about you or maybe your wife used the amazon try before you buy thing. >> yeah, i i by lot of stuff on amazon, i did it a couple. it was a little confusing but it seemed to work. and now you're like now they're bailing on why. what was wrong with this? try before you buy thing? >> for amazon prime members, they let you try to 45 and on january 31st. election get like 4 pairs of shoes and for shirts and you pick one outfit from that return. the other 3.
9:20 am
yeah, it's expensive to restock all that stuff and probably wasn't as catches. you would have thought recently stores have been, you know, making you pay a premium couple bucks since stuff back. shipping is big problem for amazon all other retailers. so i'm okay with it. going away. i can tell you my spouse probably not so much. and it's frustrating i see a lot of weeks, 20 4 pairs of shoes show yeah. i know what you mean and you try to narrow it down. but you know, if you haven't seen and that's online shopping for you. >> i have become a little more accepting of just i have to pay to return stuff. you know, i've got to go ahead and try it. and then a pay to return. it. that's the price you i didn't go to the store. i save gas money and the time and all that. absolutely convenience of okay. >> so i want to know more about the wave of the future because of kids are going to college now or they're thinking about. >> maybe they're in high school thinking about what they should be. you've taken a look at the top earning jobs.
9:21 am
>> and not just the top earning jobs. it's the you have to be making 75,000 of the job and has to get 20% growth in job postings for it. so this could be a lot of demand is what it comes down to for high paying jobs. the list that would indeed, which is one of those jobs. job search sites? they came out with 6 the top. 25 position for healthcare come up. sessions like veterinarians. number one physician making $220,000 a year on average number 3 clinical psychologist, number 8 radiologist comes in at 14, but radiologist because school for over 11 years. so can make $385,000, the registered nurses on the list, too. i've got a friend who is in his 20's. 25 year-old young man and barton's hard. works as a waiter. and he just recently became paramedic. and that's like $80,000 start. so he's doing quite are in demand. i look at i mean, those health care jobs. yeah, they pay well.
9:22 am
>> eventually. but like you said, you have to go through all this training. and i mean, my daughters and that's going out. it adds up. it costs. so they graduate. now the loans, they have to pay off. yeah. some kids now are opting not to go to college instead becoming like a paramedic like this guy is. yeah, we have an aging us population as i've turned. 56 recently. >> i may be going to the doctors more and more and taking pills for the rest of my life or hypertension or something. so health care is not going to go way i and i still need at least a nurse practitioner to outright. probably you don't need a walker yet. you're 56. happy birthday. get in there. hey, i know. know. i look like just 52. >> before we go, what are the odds that musk is going on? tiktok just you want to place bets on us? >> i think it's gonna be pretty now being talked about by china of them selling tiktok to him. he has tickets 170 million users and excess 600 million his country into
9:23 am
the william randolph hearst. and i will say this in the next 10 years, he's the first real dinner. i bet money on that one. >> wow. and then at what comes after a trillion or i'm just curious, a quick trip of a quick trillion or i think i think it's because acquittal. it's a bazillion. i fake i say that you'd like to retreive
9:24 am
9:25 am
>> we're back at 9.25. and happening right now. police in santa rosa are looking for a man who followed a group of girls leaving school. so we have photos of the car that police say was involved. this
9:26 am
described as a black four-door 2008 jeep cherokee. it has damage on the back left side and that's where you see that picture there on the right side of the screen. the incident happened last friday afternoon. it was we're near lemur street and providence court. police say the man tried to invite the girls into his car and even follow them by driving in reverse. the suspect is described as a white male. he has light brown hair and a beard. he's estimated to be about 25 years old. he stands 5, 5, they think weighing about 12230 pounds. >> it's 9. 25 and in the east bay members of the teamsters who work for costco are going to be holding demonstration outside of this. costco in hayward. and that's ahead of the january 31st. expiration of their contract. the teamsters deal with costco covers more than 18,000 workers nationwide and they say if they don't get what they want their contract, they are prepared to strike. this
9:27 am
is a practice pickett. they're calling it and it begins at 11 o'clock this morning. san francisco superior court clerks had straw, had had a strike at one point. but now they have a deal with their management. and that includes more training and more staffing. you may remember the clerks went on a one-day strike. this is during the new moma, many murder trial in san francisco. back in october. the union for the clerk says they have the contract was ratified on the 9th and they are satisfied with it includes better tray better training and better staffing for the courts. >> and starbucks considers themselves america's coffee house. well, that coffee house now has a new rule when it comes to using their bathroom. explain what that new rule is. coming up and alive.
9:28 am
9:29 am
9:30 am
>> 9.29 right now checking out the weather scene of things warm up at all because when it's cold in the morning, sometimes i later will be nice. so i'll just jump into the car without a jacket, which i did well. was that a good we're that my mind is that too, don't need to bring that jacket. how into later today? i'll be today is going to be a little bit cooler but will still be in the 60's. i guess it depends on your tolerance. >> we're looking outside of mount diablo right here from walnut creek, green hillsides. thank you. earlier, when terrain. >> obviously, january has brought us any of it. we are seeing much calmer winds today with southern california could say the same as we've seen. just extraordinary winds down south. it's 40's for most of our current temps, palo alto.
9:31 am
46, oakland, 48, lot of 30's still up in the north bay. it was a cold start. we had those frost advisories for most of the bay area. those have since expired, though. and from here on out temperatures will continue that upwards trajectory eventually getting us back into the low to mid 60's. reyna. >> they can do time out there. if you are going leave your house and traveling right now, 20 minute ride on the bay bridge. accidents or delays there. and that accident on the san mateo bridge. we were tracking its star of the hour. it's clear. so you're making decent time there. about 20 minutes on the senate tale. 8 are richmond center fell and the golden gate bridge about 29 minutes. if you're making that route darya. james, back to you. >> 9.30 and as you drink your coffee this morning, you might be thinking i got to go meaning where you're going to out and buy a lot of people pop into starbucks, right? not for coffee. already a coffee. you need to go to the bathroom, right? orrhe just want to go in there and just warm up for whatever reason. sure. hang out for a while. i can't do that anymore unless
9:32 am
you buy something and kron four's will. tran is live for us in walnut creek. >> with that change in policy will. >> starbucks open door policy that was enacted in 2018 is effectively slam shot because moving forward, you can go into starbucks. they would love your money. that hasn't changed to. what's going to change is if you are staying there for an extended period or if you're going to the bathroom, guess what? that's going to cost you something at the very least, a cup of coffee because they say moving forward, that's their policy. remember the days where you would have to get a code from them that might be the case moving forward because they say this is for the betterment of their coffee community, that they don't want people hphanging around all day withou spending money or going to the bathroom. now the open door policy actually started in philadelphia 7 years ago when 2 african-american men, they were waiting for a business partner to arrive. they did
9:33 am
not order anything. they wanted to wait for the partner to arrive. but in the meantime, they were harassed, they say there were racial overtones where police officers were actually involved. and that's when starbucks said, let's do the open door policy. 7 years running effectively over right now, we got a chance to talk to some customers. many they don't like it. >> i think that's within their right to do it. but i mean, it sounds like you're not a ethically. i think, you know, it be nice be able to go into the service. you know if you need to go to the bathroom. >> if you're thinking that starbucks is leading the charge in all of this, they say that's not the case that they're actually doing what many other restaurants have been doing and continue to do that. if you go into other restaurants, the use, the
9:34 am
bathroom, they also expect you to buy something. so starbucks is doing the same thing and they are training their employees on how to handle it. and if it gets out of hand, those employees could end up calling police officers like they did back in 2018. >> thank you. we'll 9.33. is the time. and bart trains are now running on a new schedule. the changes started yesterday. the transit system is upgrading the train control system and the biggest change that you'll notice in the scheduling is for those who ride the yellow line from 09:00pm to midnight because that line is now and the sfo instead of millbrae construction is going to happen during the hours between a coma and millbrae and the changes also so they can sync up bart with other transit agencies to make your ride smoother from, you know, the train to the bus and whatnot. and bart also says the changes will create a better experience for riders overall. >> i think one of the things that the pandemic showed to
9:35 am
transit agencies is that we need to do a better job working together. and so the schedule change with bart and other transit agencies all happening at the same time is that realization of that. and it's also the fruition of that. >> and bart says the other routes may have some minor changes to. so if you take part at all, they say it's best to you. rechecked that schedule in case there was a tweak. >> all right. let's go to sonoma county now where the sheriff's office there has arrested a woman from vallejo who they say had several fraudulent ebt card transactions that resulted in what you see here on your screen. all explain. deputies first say they started this whole thing with a traffic stop in one of the officers recognize the woman behind the wheel of someone who is wanted for ebt fraud. yesterday she was she provided they say a fake passport. and so they arrested her and eventually searched her home. and inside, they found what you see on the screen, 115 baby formula containers and alcohol, which they suspect was also stolen.
9:36 am
>> it's this morning. tens of thousands of people are under evacuation orders because the fires in southern california and some are here. they are in crawford's. rob nesbitt actually had a chance to chat with one family who can't go back home. they're taking refuge here in the bay area. and this is their story. >> i've talked with several people who came to the bay area because of the bad air quality in la others were thankful to still have their home standing. and one couple whose family's home was destroyed over the weekend. some people who had to be evacuated from their neighborhoods in southern california were given the green light to go back to their homes. but many have been advised to stay away from areas like the palisades and altadena because there are still active fires. nearly a week after the first place started. one of those families is tell for. thompson's parents were evacuated. their altadena home around 02:00am wednesday drove maybe a block and a half and saw flames. >> and wasn't expected to sign that timing quickly turned back around.
9:37 am
>> and by the time go back to our they were already, you know, packing up the eaton fire turned their home into this. everyone in the family got out safely. >> been staying at a hotel while they wait to be allowed back into the neighborhood. a lot of uncertainty. there's a lot of fear. >> lot of concerns surrounding not just there safety. but you know what their life is going to look like after thompson has chosen to stay with his family during mandatory evacuations, but others like dylan henley chose to leave, fly to san francisco to stay with his godmother while the fires rage on what really started add on to the hollywood area was there canyon fire. >> that is just a mile away from mean, you could just see kind of pouring down the mountain air quality is extremely poor in la. and halle is waiting for conditions to improve because of a lung condition. getting and social media of what his i- friends and neighbors are going thru. i think there's a bit of >> resilience inside to hold it together. but don't think something like that is it's

easy just sake process right then. and there on corrupt california, issued a moratorium friday on insurance companies to prevent them from canceling or not renewing policies and wildfire impacted areas. thompson has been staying with his parents to try to help them with filing insurance claims but says the process has been extremely difficult with long wait times and very little answers reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> and as you know, we have many cross fire crews from the bay area that are down in socal helping them out. this is a video and pictures of a crew from napa. they sent them to the palisades fire in there, as you can see, really needed as home after homes catching fire there. they're doing their best to put it out. here's new video we have from a crew and pictures from a crew that came from
9:39 am
