francisco. yep. they're expecting a lot of people to come by thousands. in fact, to attend millions of dollars, hopefully flooding into the local economy. and they've had some protesting over coverage showing horses live in union square where there is an increase in security. joey? >> yeah, you can definitely notice the increase in police presence here. as you take a look here, the westin saint frincis is where this event is taking place. invite only and police and security are at the door making sure no one gets into the hotel without credentials. security is tight as thousands are expected in san francisco's union square. dozens of police officers on foot patrol. >> and barricades around the westin saint francis for the 39th annual jp morgan healthcare conference. this is like the super bowl of health care on the minds of many december's brazen killing of the united healthcare ceo brian thompson in the streets of new york city in december.

the suspect luigi maggi charged with murder protesters in san francisco demanding a public takeover of the health care industry, which they say is putting profits over people see certain mega millionaires who making billions of profits off of the backs of patient safety is top of mind among some of the attendees. >> i've been coming to this conference for 15 years and i have never seen so many police officers at the jp morgan conference ever before. so i think it really double down on security. those who've attended in the past recall the city's drug crisis, homelessness and crime but say they haven't encountered any violence this week. i think security is very good. things have just gotten a great job. the police presence is significant here. >> i have felt uncomfortable on one or 2 occasions when walking by people >> i have it engage me verbally. i think the security has been top i safety when all you know, i think the cities and a good job trying do the

best they can to make this up. a positive event. >> according to the san francisco travel association. this conference is one of the most significant in the city bringing in an estimated 92 million dollars to the local economy. and today's keynote speaker is to first lady doctor jill biden. she's expected to speak later on today. so far we have not seen any protesters out here. >> this morning. back to you guys. all right. thank you, joey. >> there were some protests because the only hospital equipped to handle heart attacks and strokes. and he said about san jose was going to close. and there was a lot of concern. but santa clara county has just announced a deal 2 by regional medical center last year. the hospital shut down its level too trauma center. and that's part of months of protests and rallies because people who are in the area said they're going to if they have a heart attack or streke, they're gonna have to travel a long way. it'll take much longer to get to a

hospital and get that lifesaving care that they need. well, now the county plans to purchase the hospital and preserve its services. >> in doing so that we're gonna be able to restore the level 2 trauma center at regional that was closed last august. this is about saving lives. this is about access to critical care where minutes mattered. and being able to bring regional medical center in to the county's health care system. it's going to help us ensure high-quality integrated. excellent care. >> it's still just tentative, but county officials are hoping to get it done and have control of the hospital by april. 1st. >> well, in the east bay, the county of alameda is closer to finalizing the sale of the oakland coliseum. the deal would allow the oakland acquisition ac for short to take over the county's half of the property. the city of oakland has already finalized its sale agreement ac. now,

the county has 2 goals with the sale. first is to bring the coliseum under the control of the sole owner so they can make those decisions more quickly. secondly, though, the county also wants to get out of the sports and entertainment business so we can free up money for other things. the board of supervisors will vote to complete the transaction at an upcoming meeting. >> it's 10, 0, 5, and in the east bay, a 15 year-old is in police custody now for a ooting that killed a man at ppened the day after christmas. the man was found shot on foothill boulevard around 4 in the evening and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead in. there's a gofundme page from the family where the victim's son says his dad was shot in the heart right in front of him as he went out to confront 3 people who are stealing the sons, scooter. and if you'd like to help the family again, there is a gofundme page 10. 0, 6 is the time right now. other news that we're following today, police in santa rosa are looking for a

man. >> who followed a group of girls who are leaving their school. yeah, crawford's hard here in the studio with more on what happened right now. yeah, that's right. so what happened last friday afternoon, the girls we're leaving school santa rosa. police say the suspect reportedly drove in reverse against traffic, trying to stay in the girl's path. this happened in the area of lemur street in providence road. we don't know how all the girls are, but we do know that there is an elementary and middle school really close to that neighborhood. these are the photos of a car involved. get a good look at it. okay. it's a black four-door 2008 jeep cherokee. it's got some damage to the back left side. police say he played pop music really loudly trying to entice the girls, jester them to get inside his car. the suspect is described as a white man. brown here, a beard. he is estimated to be around. 25 years old about 5 of 5 in wayne about 12230 pounds. santa rosa police are asking anybody with any information

to get back to send it back to bill to the desk. okay. new this morning, san francisco firefighters put out a fire on the 600 block of ella street. >> this is video provided by the fire department. you can see they have the ladder truck extended there. this was at the 6. apparently the caller to 9-1-1, said that a scooter had caught fire. right now crews are working to clean up all the damage. >> 10, 0, 7 right now and talk about the damage in southern california. as you know, it has been extreme and just last night, another fire broke out. we're taking a look at that latest fire and then also showing you the 2 massive fires in an update with that. so first of all, the one that just broke out is called the auto fire. it's in ventura county and this is from our sister station, ktla of the flames that started popping up around 7 o'clock last night. they spread it near a golf course in oxnard. but crews got the upper hand and that fire is 56 acres. 0 1%

contained. but still fairly small compared to the 2 biggest fires that we've been following. james. >> well, here's a look at some of the damage left behind by the palisades fire. that one 17% contained this morning. it's gone up. it was 14 yesterday. nearly 24,000 acres burned, though, and again, pacific palisades as they pan shots. you can see the damage left behind and the eaton fire was equally as destructive. that's the one burning in altadena and pasadena. it's now 35% contained. so that slowly growing, has burned a little more than 14,000 acres. as you can see. and the death toll to from both of these fires actually rose over the weekend to now. 24 people, at least 17,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed. and that includes homes, businesses, cars, things like that. powerful winds were what really triggered this fire and cause it to spread as fast as it did throughout la county. >> and our parent company

have to buy something because they say this is for the betterment of their coffee community. they call themselves america's coffee house and they say, you know what, that 2018 policy, it's run its course which, by the way, began in a spectacular way. it started in philadelphia when 2 african-american men, they're waiting for a business partner partner by anything waiting for the partner. then they were told to leave. they protested and then officers actually got involved racial overtones. fairness. a lot of those things were discussed and that's why they have the open door policy. but now you will have to buy something. it doesn't have to be coffee could be one of their pastries. but the bottom line is starbucks gets money and you get access to the bathroom. got a chance to talk to some customers. here's their reaction to it. it let me play starbucks their version. they might say, well, michelle toilet paper costs money, water costs, money and

wished southern california could be in that same boat. but unfortunately, they've been so persistently dry this winter and these winds have been extraordinary today. we still do have high wind warnings, fire danger, really, really high indicating red-flag warnings to and this remains through noon tomorrow for much the la metro area and surrounding region. in fact, fire danger. gradients on the map, yellow, orange and red really indicating that much of the la metro areas just lit up with continued fire danger today with winds picking up for the middle of the day. high pressure ridge is blocking in the thing from coming our direction. so this is likely to go down as one of the driest januarys that we've had in the bay area. certainly over the past decade. you can see just how nice and dry. we are the way through the rest of the week. that will remain through the weekend and next week for us in the bay area. it's made for really comfortable weather. we've been consistently in the 60's and for a lot of the coast as well. temps in the 60's along the bayshore. we're not quite

as warm as we had been last week and we are going to be seeing temperatures sliding a little closer to normal towards the tail end of the week but still warm. san jose at 66 degrees today. union city, a comfortable 64 oakland and berkeley at 62 north bay. very similar with low to mid 60's and that sunshine is going make it feel really nice. the next 7 days. you can see that very subtle downward slide towards the weekend and next week, it's all sunshine and dry skies all the way through. >> dre, thank you, john. 10, 16 right now. and you might notice some workers picketing outside of this costco in the east bay. it's in hayward and members of the teamsters union are going to be holding a demonstration outside the hayward, costco because they want a contract and there's expires january 31st. and the teamsters they represent about 18,000 costco workers nationwide and they want a strong contract that they like. and if they don't like it, they say they are prepared prepared to strike that

practice pickett as they're calling. it is at 11 o'clock this morning. san francisco superior court clerks had done some picketing that a one-day strike, but they have reached an agreement now with management, you might recall that the workers went on strike. the clerks were striking for one day during the mau mau many murder trial, which was and october and san francisco and now the union says they have worked it out. they ratify the contract january 9th and it includes better training and solves some shorts or short staffing. that was within the court and also provides mandates about management providing ongoing training for court employees. >> well, the san francisco immigrant rights commission held a special hearing last night to address the concerns of immigrants in the city as president elect donald trump is set to take office next week on monday. representatives from various immigration advocacy groups highlighted resources that are available to migrants living

in the bay area. we also provide recommendations on how to handle policy changes that may come from the white house. the commission will now take those recommendations and develop own plan. >> time now is 10 18 and governor newsom is expanding his special legislative session aimed at taking on donald trump. >> it will also include billions of dollars to help with the state's wildfire response. we have capitol correspondent eytan wallace with the latest. >> the governor says expanding the special legislative session to increase funds for the state's fire response will help victims, but republicans are calling on him to end the other part of the special session aimed at taking on donald trump. as the fires rage in southern california. governor gavin newsom is now calling for his special legislative session. a session originally scheduled to prepare for and take on the trump administration to now also include a component responding to the wildfires. saying the new component of the session aims to allocate 2

and a half billion dollars toward the state's emergency fire response, including recovery and cleanup or state assistance to rebuild schools and more spending for wildfire preparedness and his announcement. the governor wrote this in part, quote, california is organizing a marshall plan to help los angeles rebuild faster and stronger to the people of los angeles. we have your back. >> we're going to move heaven and earth. >> to get la read to be clear, the special session will still include its original goal of allocating 25 million dollars to the attorney general to help fund a future lawsuit against the trump administration. it will also add another 25 million dollars to assist with immigration legal services within the state democratic assembly member alex lee fully supports that. amid concerns over mass deportations and trump's threats to withhold certain emergency federal aid as a member of the special session committee island. sure that will continue fight against all the crazy trump policies that harm every detail plans. and that's what's important to trump of california in this way. but republicans at this

press conference called on democratic leaders to work with trump, not fight him. they want the governor to stop the special session on trump and the stead create a new one on fires in the state's insurance crisis. look, we called for the special session on love fire. so if he's following our lead in doing that cool, great. >> you know, but lose the special session idea that trump reef in california because not helpful. it comes as the special session's first committee hearing originally scheduled for tuesday has been postponed due to many lawmakers having to stay in their districts to respond to the fires. as for when that hearing could be rescheduled mean they could postpone this week's hearings at any time during the future. the special session remains in place until the legislature actually adjourns. it. and as for an exact timetable here, the governor says he wants the legislature to advance the special session bills to his desk before trump takes office. >> on january, 20th reporting at the state tom wallace kron 4 news. >> we continue to follow very

latest with wildfires in southern california and what we're doing in the bay area to help and of auto company. >> is offering free fire service for data recovery because when your stuff burns up, you have little to go on to recover all that stuff they couldn't take with you. you know, special papers and cell phones and things like that. the company is called drive savers and they are pledging a million dollars worth of services for free so that the victims can recovered documents and photos and for hard drive storage cards, mobile phones, anything that was shoot up by the flames. they will provide a free shipping label for those affected too. the deal is this offer stands only until january 31st or until that 1 million dollars runs out. >> well, meantime, a website called lodi could help southern california homeowners navigate insurance. now in the wake of the wildfire, which is a whole process, that's going to be a headache for a lot of folks and maybe this will help out. it was started by a

>> it's 10 25 in the city of alameda has announced the sale of building 92 at alameda point, they issued a request for proposals and now the city is ready to start with store property and have a be redeveloped. this is at west ranger avenue in the former world war 2 era naval air station building. 92 is part of the alameda point ongoing redevelopment and it's located near other reuse projects that they're setting up the city's looking for buyers. now with a plan to a line with their own development goals. the proposed deadline is april 1st. >> well, meantime, the state of california has taken a historic step towards supporting black students in higher education. there's a new law authored by former state senator steven bradford. that's creating the nation's first black serving institution designation which aims to support colleges and universities that are committed to fostering black

student success. currently, 39 community colleges in california. meet these eligibility requirements. there are some other public and private nonprofit colleges in the state that are meeting as well. there will be a podcast to launching by the end of this week by the i can campaign. and it'll talk about how colleges are working to earn that designation. the first episode is set to drop this coming thursday. well, there are links ceo elon musk says that a 3rd patient now has successfully received a brain chip implant. musk says all 3 patients implants are working well, as the company is hoping to add up to 30 more patients this year. musk also says that since the first patient received the implant last year, the technology has been upgraded to include a higher bandwidth and longer battery life. no details were given out about the latest nearly patient. well, you know, when we find out. >> 10, 27 and still ahead on the kron morning news. >> multiple bay area shelters are trying to help southern

who had to be evacuated from their neighborhoods in southern california were given the green light to go back to their homes. but many have been advised to stay away from areas like the palisades and altadena because there are still active fires. nearly a week after the first place started. one of those families is tell for. thompson's parents were evacuated. their altadena home around 02:00am wednesday drove maybe a block and a half and saw flames. >> and wasn't expected to sign that timing quickly turned back around. >> and by the time go back to our they were already, you know, packing up the eaton fire turned their home into this. everyone in the family got out safely. >> been staying at a hotel while they wait to be allowed back into the neighborhood. a lot of uncertainty. there's a lot of fear. lot of concerns surrounding not just their immediate safety. but you know what their life is going to look like after thompson has chosen to stay with his family during mandatory evacuations, but others like dylan henley

chose to leave, fly to san francisco to stay with his godmother while the fires rage on what really started add on to the hollywood area was the canyon fire. >> that is just a mile away from mean, you could just see kind of pouring down air quality is extremely poor in la. and halle is waiting for conditions to improve because of a lung condition. getting the grim updates to the news and social media of what his friends and neighbors are going thru. i think there's a bit of >> resilience inside to hold it together. but don't think something like that is it's easy. like process right then and there to this on grew up california issued a moratorium friday on insurance companies. >> to prevent them from canceling or not renewing policies and wildfire impacted areas. thompson has been staying with his parents to try to help them with filing insurance claims but says the process has been extremely difficult with long wait times and very little answers reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news.

>> this is what bay area fire crews that are down there are dealing with. this is a group that is working from of the napa area. these are napa firefighters that said this is video from the pacific palisades fire that they are battling. and you can see these are so many active fires. they need lots of help. and the bay area sent a lot of crews. in fact, there is one from crockett. they're working in the altadena area on the eaton fire. and this is these are some pictures of their engine that they sent. plus for firefighters with that engine to help contain fires there. bryn county has also sent a bunch of responders. they deployed some search and rescue team workers over the weekend and here they are gathering. this is a team that's working on the eaton fire and they add grim task of searching for survivors and looking through the rubble and seeing if there are any hazards there. there. a team of 30 that they just sent

other fire departments that have sent their crews, including from alameda county, san mateo county, as we showed in napa county and the san francisco fire department, too. >> ok, well, yesterday we told you how the san francisco spca was waiving adoption fees to help make space for pets coming from those down caught in the wild. fires are trying to free up the kennel space for those. the agency is my taking their pets and then the fire victim. animals can feel those viewers are responding colors. reyna harvey has more. yeah, >> right behind us. a happy family reunited again. this is actually levi and bay area. residents are doing their part to help animals in need a home. so these viewers, they saw our story from yesterday and they went out in the adopted levi. they went out and they made sure that they gave him a fresh home in a social media post. levi's parents said let the memory start. meanwhile, are inhumane welcome. 46 animals from shelters in la county late last night, 2 dogs, 44 small

guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits. brought over to marin so that there's more space to house strays and evacuated animals from the fires and also relieves the pressure on the shelter staff over there. and then we got another. que vive is the strawberry. he's one of 10 dogs and volunteers with east bay spca brought back from southern california this weekend. he's also looking for a home. so the goal of all of this to help shelters in the la area make room to take in animals that are displaced by the fires. and you can do your part by helping and going in adopting some of these little cutie pies from any of the local shelters here in the bay area. send it back to bill to the desk. thank you. grant. >> it is 10 36 and happening today, the fremont fire department is going to be adding a whole new company, including a fire truck in 9 firefighters was back in 2020 that an assessment of the city show that they really did need this additional support. and so now they're getting it. the fire department is adding that additional fire truck to the station that currently serves

centerville and is nearby the downtown district. this also means that station, station 6 will have an engine and a truck fully staffed every day. there's going to be a grand opening ceremony set for 1 o'clock this afternoon with city officials. and in the north bay has a new interim fire chief. there you arthur gonzalez season native. he served this city for years. gonzalez says the fire department under his watch will be a progressive oreanization that provides leadership and high quality safety for the community. city officials say the recruitment process to pick a new permanent fire chief will get underway soon. >> time now 10:36am. bart trains are running on a new schedule. yeah. the transit system made those changes as it starts to upgrade its train control system. kron four's lindsey ford has reaction. >> having the trains be on time, it's super crucial. otherwise i lost an hour? >> alex pereira is familiar with the departure and arrival times from the lafayette bart

station. he writes the train daily to commute to san francisco and visit with family and friends. he says minutes off could mean running late to work and missing out on important moments. be more diligent on scheduling. like even like when i walk here from my apartment. >> getting here on time is crucial. because if i miss this at the wait 20 minutes, plus to get on the next train invites first coming back home parts new schedule went into effect monday morning. >> hart says the changes are necessary for the transit agency to upgrade its train control system. the biggest changes for those writing the yellow line from 09:00pm to midnight. it will end at sfo instead of millbrae. meanwhile, trains that run supple in millbrae will run every 15 minutes. neither of which would affect colleen will birds. honestly, with my schedule and usually pulling up the app to see which one i'm going to be catching anyway. but >> i guess it's a little bit more important, too. checked

>> the south bay, santa clara county is getting 12 million dollars to install more electric vehicle charging stations. they're putting in 237 ev charging ports spread all throughout san jose. most over located in public places like libraries, community centers and parks. the san jose mayor says that the new stations will make ev charging more convenient and more accessible for everybody. >> more than a dozen transit agencies are t making a new pledge to hire small businesses in the bay area. kron four's charles clifford has the story. >> well, in the years ahead, bay area transit agencies are going to spend billions on big projects. they're making a promise to share some of that wealth with small businesses. on monday, more than a dozen bay area transit agencies including bart caltrain, the golden gate bridge district signed on to what is known as the equity and infrastructure project pledge. it's an informal commitment to try to hire historically underrepresented businesses to

>> john, thank you, jen. 48 is the time in the north bay in marin county. the board of supervisors now is considering a rate increase. former in sanitary service. they want to raise it to 3.6, 1%. and that rate adjustment would come to about $0.50 more per month for the residential service package. and that would come to an estimated monthly total of about $55 and $0.92 now, marin, sanitary services. this rate change will go into effect this year. if it's approved. meanwhile, berkeley city officials celebrating the purchase of a 12 unit building on the corner of california and carlton street. it's going to be a new permanent preserved, affordable housing unit that building originally went up for sale after owner passed away. but after the tenants found out about the sale, they rally together and with the help of the bay area community land trust and berkeley city council member ben bartlett, they were able to preserve the building. >> so we've seen in this neighborhood again and again.
