to close down this year. but first, wildfires continue to rage in southern california ripping through neighborhoods and leaving devastation in its path. >> thanks so much for joining us on kron. 4 news at 5. i'm vicki liviakis. great lotus. more images are coming out of what is left to parts of southern california. la county just. >> devastating wildfires are still tearing through neighborhoods, leaving behind piles of rubble where homes once stood so here's a look at what's left of altadena after the eaton fire moved through that area. >> the neighborhood that was once lush with greenery and life. now a ghost town, at least 16 people are dead and it is now. 35% contained and burning more than 14,000 acres. about 7 1000 homes, buildings and cars destroyed, gone. here's a look at pacific

palisades where >> that fire tore through and devastated more than 10,000 structures. at least 8 people have died and this fire alone containment is up to 17%. but this fire already burned more than 23,000 acres. >> and here's an overall look at those wildfires. 24 people have died. 24 people missing 17,000 structures destroyed. and right now more than 37,000 acres are burning and crews are working really hard to try to gain ground on these fires as high winds continue to push back against that effort. that factor could. >> some of the progress that's been made in kron four's terisa stasio has more. >> and extreme fire danger warning is in effect for the entirety of southwest california intensifying winds are causing eason los angeles basin. fire officials just had a briefing talking about what they're doing to try and stop fresh fires from starting and

entire areas safe. more than 100,000 people remain displaced. officials are stressing the importance of having go bags at the ready. officials say 24 people have lost their lives because of the fires. about 20 people are still missing. >> in the newsroom, theresa kron, 4 news. all right. let's go outside or taking a live look. >> right now outside this over los angeles county from our sister station, ktla, and their chopper. you know, a strikingly. calm picture from a distance exactly one week after the fires started. so nice to see. >> the improvements still not out of the woods. meteorologist kathy trafton, but much better. >> well, the winds are still strong, although they're weaker than they were last week. so at least they're weaker now. but they are set to strengthen again, strongest winds of this strength into the night, strongest winds.

03:00am tomorrow morning to 03:00pm. it's a pds red flags situation, particularly dangerous situation throughout parts of ventura county and los angeles county. that's a red flag warning for many other areas. in fact, including now parts of san luis obispo county and santa barbara counties as well. so the concern is critic. it's critical fire danger because of very low relative humidities and very strong gusting winds in the count coast in the valleys. it can be 30 to 50 mile per hours winds, but it could be up to 70 mile per hour gusts through the mountain ranges. so as a real problem because these winds can be erratic, fires can exhibit erratic behavior. and part of that has to do is with the weather because, you know, you have a prevailing santa ana winds within a fire. you can get all kinds we get wind changes and that makes it really tough to fight a fire when all of a sudden it can turn and head toward you back to grant and vicki, thank you, kathy, our parent company nexstar is partnering with the

red cross to raise money for the wildfire victims in southern california. >> you can just scan the qr code on your screen to help out. and we are staying on top of the deadly fires in los angeles county for all the latest information head to our website at kron 4 dot com. >> now at 5, we are learning the names of the 4 family members found shot to death in a santa rosa home earlier this month. authorities have identified them as 67 year-old clive gov. 67 year-old donna goth. 33 year-old rain. it and 28 year-old cameron goff deputies say clive and donna were once married in rain and cameron where their children, the victims were found last week during a welfare check on monarch court. officers say they were each found with several gunshot wounds in different areas of the home. and a gun was near one of the victims. police say they also conducted a search warrant at a house linked to one of the

victims in san jose. police are not saying where the gun was found. they're not saying which individual that was closest to tonight. a person is dead after a shooting in oakland. it happened just before 9 o'clock this morning on east 12th street right around the corner from international boulevard. >> police say the victim was taken to the hospital where they later died. one person has been detained in that shooting new at 5. we're also learning another person was shot in oakland. it happened around. >> one this afternoon on linden street near 10th street, the victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. no word on any arrests. >> to the north bay. now a woman's arrest for welfare fraud leads to the discovery of more than 100 containers of baby formula at of allay home. take a look here. sonoma county deputies say the woman is known to be involved in several baby formula thefts and had outstanding warrants for retail theft. when deputies stopped her in santa rosa last week and asked her for her license. they say she

gave them a fake romanian passport officers then searched her home in vallejo. they found more than 100 baby formula containers. she was arrested and booked into jail on several charges. >> tonight, a community in san francisco is demanding the city save a local safeway. yeah, they marched to city hall today asking leaders to step up >> and protect what they call a pillar in their community. kron four's. leslie, good reports. >> it's really important. and to my family. >> we want know that the fillmore is upset. and we demand we've been 50 years and probably more injustice in the film or so. we will just year the days are counting down for this safeway in the fillmore. >> the grocery store, according to the community here, serves as a staple. and this departure is devastating to them was not just a grocery store. it's a full fledge grocery store. you have a yet a meat market. you have a

2022. 2023 meta employees on edge. finding out that 5% of the company's workforce will be laid off. >> those employees will receive notice next month. and ceo mark zuckerberg says this decision is to move out. low performers. tech jobs used to mean job security. the president of technologists research bob o'donnell says that's no longer the case. mark zuckerberg, the ceo believes they have to work. >> more quickly to weed out what he's calling loper former. so getting much more aggressive in the means by which they do. these performance-based reviews. and i think that's a trend we may see more of in silicon valley medicines laid-off employees will receive severance in line with what the company has provided recently. >> the company that owns facebook, instagram and whatsapp has also ended its fact checking program saying it will now allow more online speech leading into a donald trump presidency. i think there'll be a number of changes at meta. >> based on politics that will force some people to leave or will drive some people to leave for years. meta has used third-party fact checkers for social media platforms.

talk weather as we get live look outside here. beautiful time of day. the twilight hour here in the bay. the view. >> is serene from the top of mount tam kron four's meteorologist kathy trafton here with a look at the forecast. >> grabbed his right is twilight hours because the sun just set at 5.14, after day with mostly clear skies for all. i saw a few high thin wispy cirrus clouds in the sky and take a look at this view from the berkeley hills, the sun shots went down and now we see all the yellows and oranges. and if you read it, thank you. absolute spectacular view for us. it's been really a beautiful day with temperatures just a little bit cooler than yesterday in some areas. here are the high temperatures cooler than normal. maybe 2 to 6 degrees cooler than you might expect on this date number. still in the 50's upper 50's into the 60's mid-sixties for half moon bay. 66 degrees. and in terms of the temperature change will 6

degrees cooler. then yesterday in santa rosa. so made most areas now statue down to 4. but most areas little cooler than again, san francisco up one degrees. so it's not much variation temperatures right now. 50's and 60's. and now that the sun has set, the temperatures will start to drop even more last night into this morning. it was really, really cold. and then we even had some frost advisories in effect because we had 32 degree temperatures overnight last night in napa and santa rosa and concord and forecast lows tomorrow morning will be similar to this morning. so we don't have an advisory in effect, but certainly as a pretty good chance. we could see some freezing temperatures. the wind is so light. it's little weekly offshore, even a little bit variable, if you will. and we are in for just a beautiful spell of weather because tonight and tomorrow will be a lot like last night. and today. so bit of a cookie cutter going on for us. all right. a full moon out there. oh, yeah, it wasn't. it was 100 moon last night. just

beautiful. and is that 99% today? so you could go out tonight. take a look at the moon. it'll still be extremely bright. it will look almost full and yeah, definitely go do it. ok? thank kathy. we have some breaking news right now out of southern california. >> this is just coming in a fire near hansen dam. this is in the san fernando valley. we're looking at live pictures from our sister station, ktla and the chopper there. yeah, northeastern part of the san fernando valley. -> the winds, as you can see with that that live shot. we had were pretty pronounced again. they have that extreme wind warning going on. and you can see just based on the way the the smoke is coming off the hills there that it is being wind-aided to what extent? not really sure this is in between the to 10 in the 5 and the valli. they're not far from the city of san fernando. no word on acreage

or >> to what extent this could be a threat potentially to homes. but we'll keep an eye on this. certainly as any little spot fire that pops up is a real risk. given the winds that they're experiencing and figure to until about noon tomorrow. so could be a long night. winds expected to peak somewhere in the 03:00am to 04:00am range and they're trying to obviously get this out before it can get much bigger. alright, meantime, of people. >> are not the only ones displaced by these fires so are many pets. as a result. rescue organizations here in the bay area, they are taking in southern california dogs that were up for adoption before the fire to make room for those in la shelters for their dogs that are lost or had to evacuate. yes, kind of a juggling act right now to find the space at least temporarily kron four's. dan kerman tells us. >> now the goal is to get these dogs forever homes up in the bay area.

>> they may be senior dogs, but they seem to be in perpetual motion. 4 of them just recently traveled up to san francisco is mcphail senior dog rescue from fire-ravaged angeles. we're taking dogs that were at the shelter and up for adoption at the shelter. >> and we are taking those shots and we're just integrating them up here to san francisco to put them back up for adoption. up here so that the shelters, the local shelters la have room for the evacuee dogs and the dogs that they find but feels dogs range in age from 7 to 17 and 2 of the la transplants are sierra and kit there around 7, 8, years old. they their actual guardian passed away. so these dogs were brought to the pasadena humane and put up for adoption. probably a couple weeks before the fire. so we were able to take them. melissa and glenn dive. miller

stopped. it might feel tuesday after hearing they were taking in dogs from southern california. i have been wanting to come in for a while to volunteer and with the la fires have been i've been wanting to help in some way. >> and i have heard that there were a number of dogs who were coming here we just thought we could come here help. >> for now, the goal is to get as many of the senior dogs adopted as possible because another 10 will be arriving from southern california on wednesday. and that's just the beginning. i think we're probably going to get about 50 of of these stocks and their that's above and beyond our normal intake. so we're really excited to be able to help. so if you've been thinking about adopting, especially a senior dog like this guy now is a great time. open tuesday through sunday from 10 to 5 in san francisco. dan kerman

>> well, some big changes could be coming to a major road that runs between marin and solano counties. highway 37 is used by thousands of drivers every day, but it is prone to flooding and certainly congestion. but caltrans says that it's got a new plan that would fix that. it would improve the intersection highway 37 1.21. by replacing the bridge over

to lake creek and then add new lanes in both the east and westbound directions in order to raise the money that they need to maintain this, sir route. well, caltrans says it is considering making a part of highway 37, a toll lane. the project is expected to cost about 430 million dollars. and will be paid for with federal and state grants. now, all goes well, construction could start next year. starbucks is putting a in place a stricter rule for those who hang out in the lounge area of its shops. so if you have use the bathroom or linger around, officials say that you're going to need to buy a snack or drink first. the new policies are going to include adding signs that ban harassment, violence, threatening language outside alcohol, smoking in panhandling. starbucks says that its new code of conduct for customers. it's all part of an effort to make stores a little more hospitable. >> still ahead on the news at
