fires. investigators still trying to determine the cause of both of those fires for the palisades. some are pointing to a fire that had started by fireworks on new year's eve. residents believe those flames were put out and may have somehow reignited a week later, palisades fire has burned nearly 24,000 acres. it is 18% contained tonight. and here's a look at what's left of altadena after the eaton fire had then. >> moving through that area and the death toll was updated from 16 to 17 earlier this evening. at least 7,000 structures and homes have been destroyed. it's now 35% contained and burned more than 14,000 acres for lawsuits have been filed against southern california edison, accusing the power utility company of sparking the eaton fire. burning altadena lawyers for homeowners in that area who had to evacuate or lost their homes entirely filed the suit yesterday. they claim and

blame that edison is the cause of the fire potentially starting under an electrical transmission tower in eaton canyon, southern california edison, who operates a transmission tower, says it does not believe its equipment was responsible. an official cause for the fire still under investigation. les's fight continues against these deadly wildfires burning in los angeles county. the bay area is stepping up to help their neighbors to the south. it's inspiring. many is in san francisco holding a donation drive this week for those affected by the eaton fire in altadena kron 4 sarah stinson. >> joining us live in studio with the details there. sara. >> yeah, take a look at this. i mean, just day 2 of the didn't know nation. drive-in manny's packed to the brim with donations from people wanting to help those affected by the fires in los angeles. the owner making sure each item donated his match with an organization down in southern california. that is requested it. >> the images of loss and devastation are inspiring

people in the bay area to step up and help. that includes the owner of manny's in san francisco. >> really boggling my mind. what images i've seen of many you could. tl says the fire hits close to home as he's from there. devastating. what i've seen happen to my hometown. you could. tl says he decided to host a week-long donation drive after asking a friend in altadena. >> how he could help. >> word of mouth and tongue. tons of people have come in. and as you can see, we've gotten overwhelming amount of goods donated los angeles organizations have become inundated with donations from all over. so you could. tl says he is making sure that goods they drive down are actually needed. there's a list of organizations requested specific things. we are pairing them with specific drivers. >> and so we're packing their cars with the things that they need, feminine hygiene products, toiletries, non-perishable foods, kids, toys, kids, clothes, new underwear, sleeping goods and

looking focus on southern california right now with all that damaging winds. >> with the red flag warnings, a particularly dangerous situations. it's critical fire concerns. extreme fire behavior and this petite pds red-flag warning, particularly dangerous situation that goes from 03:00am to 03:00pm tomorrow. so the gusty winds will be up to 70 miles per hour. low relative humidity, high risk for large fires. so here are some of the winds and i stopped it at 03:00pm cause those those are the strongest winds starting early tomorrow morning, all the way through 03:00pm. and the concern really is, of course, the fire. it's it's a risk for damaging winds and the windiest areas considering this extremely dry state of the fuels and the strength of the winds. the recent fire behavior. it's a particularly dangerous situation truly and there's a high risk for large fires, rapid fire spread and long-range spotting. so there

are all kinds of concerns down there. we have to keep our eyes focused there at times. back to you happy new at 11, a 17 year-old among 3 people. >> killed tonight in a crash in gilroy. chp says happened on shore road shortly before 7 o'clock. the driver of the car lost control and crossed into the opposite lane before hitting another vehicle. police say it's unclear if alcohol or drugs may have been a factor. >> in san francisco, 3 people are in the hospital after a crash involving a car and 2 big trucks. this crash happened just before 4 o'clock this afternoon in the outer sunset shutting down the intersection of sunset boulevard and santiago street fire crews had to use the jaws of life to cut into a sedan. andreescu that driver and the person was taken to hospital with serious injuries. a construction truck could be seen in the center divide box truck was also involved. the drivers of the 2 also in the

hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. people walking dogs in the area saw this aftermath. and say shows just how dangerous the spot can be. >> hopefully everybody involved is going to be ok and maybe that will be and listen to when you're driving on sunset just. >> calmly wish everybody would just drive a little slower. we've been having to add a lot of speed bumps in the neighborhood in the area because of things like this. >> multiple lanes were blocked in minibuses out to be rerouted. but all vehicles have been towed away in the intersection has since reopened, but it's still unclear tonight what caused this crash? >> chp says speeding is possibly a factor in a crash that shut down all westbound lanes of i-80 and also crash happened around 6 this evening on the freeway east of cutting boulevard. chp says 4 vehicles were involved here. that includes an sfo shuttle s. one person was injured. they're injury is set to be not life threatening, though.

all lanes did reopen shortly before. 8 o'clock tonight. >> and oakland business owner says he's dealing with back-to-back robberies, both of his gas stations. robin, the same day within minutes of each other. kron four's. lindsey ford spoke with the business owner and joins us in the newsroom now with more lindsay. >> yeah, the robberies happened around 3 monday morning. their owner rushed psaki owns a total of 4 gas stations in oakland. he says all of them have been robbed 5 to 6 times each within the last year and with the 2 recent robberies, he says he doesn't know if you can make it as a business owner in oakland. >> surveillance footage from grand gas station in oakland shows an employee plating as a group of masked men pry open the door and jump over the counter. then then empty the trash cans and fill it with secrets off the back. shell is the owner. a rush soucie says he was disturbed watching

footage and says police didn't show up. >> and boys calling 9-1-1 thing, the phone above polls showing you know, sis. >> this just ruthless and at field. 24 7 down the road. robbers smashed their way into the storefront and take off with a trash can full of cigarettes call the police. you would think the police will be on site. >> you know, not the first robbery that we're doing on the second problem is that position, they're nowhere to be fought. >> psaki owns 4 gas stations in oakland and says each of been brought 5 to 6 times each last year. ridiculous issue. one who wants the blue? i get repeats. and december 29th at another gas station he owns. you can see a robber smashing their way through a bulletproof cage where an employee my heart goes out to my boys and their safety psaki says he's considering closing

closures comes as the school district is. >> trying to cope with a 40% decline in enrollment over the last 15 years. kron four's zac moment has more. >> nestled under the san jose international airports. flight path is an american hero cemented into history. so yeah, it's a really tough seeing some of those schools, captain jason and all elementary is named after the pilot of flight 93, which was taken over by hijackers and set to crash into the capitol on 9/11/2001, but crew and passengers took over and saved countless lives crashing into a field in pennsylvania. dole's legacy has been living on in his hometown as the namesake of this school, which is now one of several schools that could be close. franklin mckinley school district says it's faced with a severely declining enrollment. my first. started teaching at bridges. it was fair. and i think there were like 80900 students who richard brooks teaches at the district and says the decline in enrollment has been going on for years. and i know parents are worried

about. >> their schools because they're, you know, pretty much community centers. and while his school bridges academy is not on the chopping block, he has a personal tie to dall elementary's. i attended there when i was a child. i had a long history. there was nice to see an honor for the 9.11 victims and for, you know, james don't sell. so it's kind of sad to see something that i thought to be around forever. and the community, you know, possibly going away forever. the district telling kron for news in a statement, quote, at this time, no decisions have been made regarding which school sites will be impacted if captain jason and dodd elementary is selected for closure, we remain deeply committed to honoring and celebrating the legacy of kept and all. and for brooks, he hopes whatever closures do happen. >> aren't too the community knowing about it makes a little bit tougher for the kids to focus because >> they wonder about the future a little bit. the district tells me that there are a minimum of 5 schools that could face being closed.

>> it's a gorgeous evening. we do have clear skies and we'll see some cool temperatures overnight and maybe even some patches of fog. so outside right now, if you go outside, it's going to be just gorgeous. you don't need your umbrella that you might need. a coat is a little bit chilly as you head outside temperatures right now, mainly in the 40's, some areas reaching down into the 30's half moon bay. 37 39 in napa. so temperatures are on their way down. and by tomorrow morning, it may be as chilly as it was this morning, which means a few areas could see some freezing temperatures may be in the north bay may be in the east bay. maybe not because humidity is up a little bit a lot extra surface water vapor. some relative humidity really a little bit higher. now. and so that could bring the formation of a few patches of fog. you're heading out tonight, especially tomorrow morning. be careful because when you drive, you don't want to have to do with those visibility issues we have seen day after day of an offshore flow, meaning thatt the wind flows from the land

of the see day after day. and it continues tonight and into tomorrow morning around sunrise and then everything changes because all of a sudden little white wind barbs pushing away from the land. all of a sudden turn around and go toward the land. that will bring us some more moisture in the atmosphere and we need every drop of moisture that we can get because we certainly are facing a problem with this big area of high pressure that is just blocking all of the storms, keeping all of the rain way away from us heading far north into the pacific northwest. so temperatures low temperatures tonight, mainly in the 40's 30's could be freezing temperatures tomorrow. my goodness in the 60's, everywhere, mid 60's for san francisco low to mid 60's. but at the beaches, bay shoreline again in the 60's low 60's, a little bit warmer as you head down toward the santa clara valley as warm as 69 degrees in san jose. and 69 in santa clara that you head up toward the east bay. and we'll continue with that 60 regime all the way through to the
