>> all right. new video now into our news room of the hughes fire. that's first started right before 11 o'clock this morning. it's now grown to about 5,000 acres. it's burning in both los angeles and a portion ventura county right now, ktla or station. they're providing us a lot of these images. they are saying that roughly 19,000 people, including residents of castaic, are being evacuated from communities that are in the south north and west of this fire. and they're still thousands of more people who are under evacuation warnings. we can see all the smoke here. it is impacting at last check part of the 5 freeway that is
2:31 pm
goes through that area. this fire his fire is burning just north of santa clarita. it's impacting the traffic there in the 5. they've closed some of on and off-ramps. this fire is just exploding in size. there has been a ground and air attack to try and put it out. we can see all the smoke that is coming from the spire. it said just over 5,000 acres there, 0% containment. but we have seen from some of our images here that there are air attacks happening. they've been dropping water and fire retardant on it. there are so many people, 19,000 people that are being evacuated right now. so there's a massive e0fort right now. is there a saw so many roads that are closed and governor gavin newsom just put out a response to the hughes fire. he put this on ex quote, it says state resources have been deployed to the hughes fire in the angeles national forest to assist in the federal response. we will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide the federal

government with whatever it needs to distinguish extinguish this fire 5,000 acres in just a couple of hours. we're seeing the live images of all the smoke. one of the issues is the weather there. the winds that's just fanning the flames. we have meteorologist gayle ong in the weather center with an update on what's happening there. they just can't get a break. yeah, i know it's still another long stretch of red flag warnings since monday. >> and you can see very dry conditions. 6% humidity. and you could see where that fire is north of castaic junction. that's north of santa clarita and winds are at 17 miles per hour coming from the northeast that classic santa ana wind direction. and as you can see, still under those red flag conditions. now to the other fires that that the palisades fire on the west side of los angeles county than altadena the eaton fire on the east side. there humidities are very dry. 5% are in foot. the readings are right now and we the winds are calm, but it's
2:33 pm
still very dry. so that's something that is that has been a huge factor. as you can see, humidity levels expected to be 2 to 10% with barely any recovery overnight. that's why there are red flag conditions and not only in los angeles and ventura county benton says san diego area as well. we are south some brush fires pop up yesterday and today, too, so that it's they're not out of the web's. that's until thursday evening and friday for areas, there is a pattern change for the end of the week. the area of low pressure will be fighting in land. there. and that's going to bring a chance of rain for southern california. that is. and here's the future cast model plated motion for you. we're dry until friday. and look at saturday. maybe some snow in the sierra just a few inches of snow. but then towards sunday, that's when we could start to see a chance of some rain. hopefully it's beneficial. but there is a slight chance of some thunderstorms with excessive rainfall, a very slight chance and that could trigger mudslides over those burn scars. and you. here's the rain forecast about quarter, you know, quarter of an inch
2:34 pm
in the fresno area. but a 10th of an inch or more in los angeles. so that would be very beneficial rain. we are trending just around the drier than normal and just around normal over the next few days here for us in the bay area. so temperatures right now, these are daytime highs. very pleasant weather here. and when we come back, we'll be talking about the 7 day forecast. you'll see a cool down. but for now we're going to enjoy these nice temperatures in the 60's. back to you. we're gonna go back to los angeles as they're now preparing for rain this weekend and how that could create mudslides where the fires have burned. >> cal fire and the california conservation corps are making thousands of sandbags to give to people who live in the eaton fire burn zones. that fire did so much damage that there's really nothing to hold the soil back. >> this fire burned 2 feet deep into the roots in the foothills. and so there's nothing holding the soil. we seen this with other significant fires. the mud and debris flows. the good news is we have several days to get prepared. you think is better
2:35 pm
than nothing. right? so >> if they have plywood dam up those areas with reinforcing that sandbags, that's a great asset to. >> governor newsom is sending specialized teams and equipment to help protect communities and natural resources from the possibility of debris flows that are already placing fencing and other barriers to try and contain and filter the runoff. water. and this is bringing back memories of the month to see the mudslides from 2018 23 people died in santa barbara as 15 feet of mud came down the mountain side, destroying homes. the mudslides occurred in the thomas fire burn scar area showing just vulnerable that land is to heavy rain following a fire. and the fires down south coupled with really awful winter weather across much of the country is forcing the american red cross to cancel hundreds of blood drives kron 4 certain all reports today the fremont fire department helped by

2:38 pm
by tall, dry grass and that could pose a hazard. if a wildfire starts to run through the foothills, the president of the san jose firefighters union tells us now is the perfect time to learn from las angeles and prepare. >> where prime for this same type of scenario here. it's not to take away from the people down there. what's happened down there. but let's learn from the current events. let's learn from history. this isn't something that's going away. so we need to focus on stopping being prepared and be part of that emergency management cycle. >> the mayor tells us it's now up to the city manager's office to determine what the fire department needs to better prepare for a massive wildfire and they could make some recommendations as early as this summer. >> and i was going happen with our school. why does our school need to close? >> more bay area schools are facing possible closures. the vallejo city unified school district held a town hall last night to discuss the fate of 8
