we'll start this press conference off. >> news at 5 >> we're following breaking news in la county. another massive wildfire has just exploded today along i-5 near castaic. this is just north of santa clarita they're calling this one. the hughes fire. we're looking live here at a fire retardant drop from one of the planes. it started just before 11 o'clock this morning at 50 acres quickly grew to

5,000 acres. it is now north of 8,000 acres. no containment on this fire. it is burning in federally owned land. we just got an update is now 9,000 acres. this thing is moving awfully quickly because >> of those winds whipping around there. the the good news here that no structures have been damaged, roughly 19,000 people, they're being evacuated from communities just south and west of this wildfire. thousands more are under evacuation warnings, including several schools. it is intense indeed. and with that, we say good evening. thanks for being with us tonight for kron. 4 news at 5. i'm grant lotus and i'm vicki liviakis. this of course comes as la continues to clean up from the devastating eaton and palisades fires. thankfully, as of right now, as we mentioned, no structures are damaged and they're calling this the hughes fire yeah, they're preparing have a news conference any minute now. we'll be monitoring that. and

as soon as that happens, we'll let you know of the latest developments. again, what they're calling this hughes fire now to 9,000 acres. no containment, some 19, 20,000 people have been told to get out of their homes. now, this also comes as mudslide. preparations are underway in the burn areas. con first chief meteorologist lawrence karnow here to give us an update on all of that. we hear, lawrence, the winds are whipping around 65 miles an hour. yeah. over the mountain tops. you get very, very gusty winds right now. >> course, these are extremely dry to go along with that. they haven't had any rain, almost all of winter. and so here we sit dry conditions. every time they get one of these santa ana wind events, they're going to be some issues with fires until we do get some rain here. the very latest conditions outside. it is warm. you get that northeasterly wind. that is that downslope on. that's a santa ana wind continue to howl outside right in santa clarita. they're seeing winds gusting right now at 18 20 miles per hour. but look, the

humidity. i mean, it is down to 5%. we're talking desert dry conditions out there right now. so what happens as you get those winds and those kind of dry conditions. and boy, these fires will just take off in a hurry with really nothing to stop a red flag warnings have been posted. of course, we've got also some wind warnings as well as we've seen some very strong gusty winds. and that's only going to be through today. that is going to be through the night tonight and tomorrow to so we've got a long way to go. and this is going to continue to play out until we actually get some real things are going to be difficult there. now there's a hint that we could see some rain this week and a boy. do we need look at the humidity all around los angeles valley and boy, it is just extremely dry out there right now. the danger is you get too much rain. all of a sudden we start to talk about mudslides will have more on the prospects for rain not only here but southern california. coming up in a few minutes. all right, lawrence, a these fires down south, you know, coupled with winter weather across the country is forcing the american red cross

now to cancel hundreds of blood drives. >> the fremont fire department put out a public call for help. the community responding by showing up dropping in arm and donating blood. i've been voting rights for years. totally were. yeah, worth whatever i had to do today. fremont fire chiefs rated e as among the donors. she says her department partnered with the american red cross to host a blood drive at its administration building wednesday because the nonprofit is in desperate need been unable to collect donations in la because of the fires and the and the winter. >> storm resulted in 500 cancel blood drives nationally. and collectively we've missed out on 12,000 units of blood collected. the red cross says donors of all types, particularly type o negative blood donors and those giving platelets are essential to saving lives. this month. i signed up for this before the fires, still,

is a constant fear in the wake of president trump's new crackdown on immigrants, especially now that schools and churches are no longer off limits. now, second time, in fact, that's good. you will tell you that it yeah, go to church a lot. so, you know, with the new suppose the changes that that the rays can happen in fearful, i don't know. should i go should not go. i go there earlier and then my my son goes later. but right now we've decided that we're going to go together. case, something happens. we want to be together and the fear these 2 women have is not just for themselves. both have children in their 20's and the concern revolves around whether the president will be successful in redefining birthright citizenship, which their kids currently have. 2 men don't go back to candidate does it worries me a lot that they buy take their citizenship away because are new unity kids that have worked very hard to be citizens for now. all they can

do is press and take extra precautions and get as much information as possible only think it's important to to go to workshops and also to watch tv and get information because instead of being panicked, create power here. powerful la raza says those that have questions about how these new laws impact them and what their rights are should contact the local community organizations like la raza to get the answers. >> in san francisco, dan kerman kron, 4 leaders across the bay are responding to trump's mass deportation plans. alameda county officials held a meeting in oakland today. >> announcing protections and resources for immigrant families. >> i have asked president president david haubert to put forward a committee ad hoc committee that will protect our alameda county communities. i am very, very excited that we're moving forward in that regard. i hope

that you will common expressed support for that committee so that we can do the proactive work to protect to support and lift up our communities who might be fearful during this time. >> in addition, county officials have launched a website to provide resources for the community. the alameda county, immigration, legal and education partnership. it provides a list of legal resources and has information on future workshops that are aimed at educating the undocumented community. with a hotline to report an answer. questions is expected to be ready by february 17th. new at 5. a federal civil rights lawsuit has been filed in sunnyvale following the death of a 19 year-old. >> who was shot by a cop? the lawsuit claims the last year manual that sarah was having a mental health crisis and cllled 9-1-1 to report someone with a knife in his mobile home park. the lawsuit claims officers saw this era walking with a knife and repeatedly told him to stop. sara finally

turned around the lawsuit alleges the officer shot him despite having less lethal options available like a taser and pepper spray. sarah's parents filed the suit seeking accountability for excessive force and wrongful death. we've reached out to the police department and the city we have yet to hear back. well, bart is now the target in a lawsuit. the transit agency is facing accusations that it's unsafe. >> and is failing to protect the public last year. a 74 year-old was allegedly pushed in front of a moving bart train. she died of her injuries. person has been charged in her death. and now the family is speaking out of the victim about kron four's terisa stasio has the latest. >> the family says the bart is putting lives at risk and that is why they say that they are taking this action. >> i can't express the amount of hurt. that my family has gotten through. that is the nephew. >> of course, owned and down the 74 year-old daly city resident shown here was known

as a generous, compassionate woman who loved to cook for her colleagues and care for her family members. but on july first 2024 5 minutes after dan dan left her job as a telephone operator park hilton hotel and downtown san francisco. the family says that she was pushed from the platform at the powell street bart station and later died of her injuries. it's not just him. >> there's a lot of people out there. >> cool. >> it's just circling that train station. i know because the moment that that happened to my on i went to that station myself and there's about a dozen, you know, people in there who i didn't feel safe, just we're going to that station. what more a female at, you know, 11, 11, 30. >> on wednesday, dan dance family announced a lawsuit against bart claiming that the public transportation agency failed in its job to protect passengers such as dan tan court documents, state that

>> the lunar new year is just one week way from today. it's coming up and organizers of the celebrations in san francisco. >> they gathered to announce some of the highlights. always a fun time of the year. kron four's. rob nesbitt joins us now live in the studio with what is up for this out. grant vicki, while celebrations start next week, the biggest nighttime parade in north america will be happening in san francisco, february 15th last year, more than a million visitors, a tended lunar new

year events and organizers are hoping for even more this year. >> the lunar new year will ring in the year of the snake known as a transformative time celebrations in san francisco's chinatown are a big part of the city's revenue and members of the city's chinese chamber of commerce gathered wednesday to give a preview pre-pandemic when we were looking at some of the data. >> we know that the one to one and a half month period of lunar new year generates about 30% of revenue for most of the businesses across san francisco chinatown. organizers are also excited to welcome actress and director joan chen is this year's grand marshal for the parade. captain eric cam with san francisco. police says staffing will be increased to prepare for the crowds. >> it's going to be all hands on deck. everybody working to ensure the safety not only for the participants and viewers for the cia's, you pray, but for the nba all-star game. also, the chinese new year celebrations are a reminder of the impact chinese americans have had on san francisco, chinese chamber of commerce

well, no fog and lauren, so far, no rain but the possibility it does exist. hope springs eternal, right? yes, we got a of rain in the forecast as we get toward the weekend. looks like the pattern is finally going to start shifting. and to me, that's a lot more important. we're going to see it return of some rainfall as we get though, a february right now. yes, try out there. it's been a warm day across parts. the bay area, some 60's and 70's look at the sunset. there's this evening. we've been very fortunate, have some beautiful sunsets during this january, looking on the positive side. it will be cold, though, around the bay area. no getting around that numbers out the door right now. 59 degrees in san francisco is currently 62 in oakland. very pleasant. 66 right now in san jose, one of the warmer parts around the bay area. 59 in little more. 62 in concord. 64 santa rosa and 54 cooling off now in half moon bay. well, not as cold tonight, but still chilly overnight lows last night we had a couple spots drop into the 20's like napa valley got down to 30 in santa rosa. not going to be as cold tonight, but you're still going to be the 30's. so patchy frost likely in the north bay valleys, also into

parts of the east bay, too, going to see some patchy frost tomorrow morning and cold temperatures to begin your day. just not quite as cold. 37, that's cold enough in livermore. 35 for an overnight low in santa rosa. 39 degrees in napa at about 38 degrees in samara fell no rain. unfortunately, still the jetstream staying well to the north of the bay area. there's a hint, though, that things are about to begin to shift gears as we get into the weekend. and after that, well, things get a little more progressive. but right now we're seeing that high pressure up above. of course, you've got the strong, gusty offshore winds, more fire problems in southern california for today. looks like, though, as we head toward the weekend of a sudden, we're gonna see another low pressure kind of drop over the top of that ridge spinning over the sierra nevada. going to bring some snow in the high country. they're going to be cold system. so if we do see it moved to the bay area, there's a chance that we could be talking about a couple of snowflakes across our higher peaks in the bay area. maybe some rain in southern california. guys, back to you. all right, lauren, so sonoma state university is making some big cuts to multiple

academic departments in order to help close a multimillion dollar budget deficit. the university announcing today. >> 46 faculty members are not going to have their contracts renewed next year. this includes tenured positions for management roles and 12 staff positions will also be eliminated more than 20 degree programs are going to be cut along with the nc. double a division 2 athletics department student athletes who choose to stay at the university. they can remain eligible to receive scholarships just so long as they meet the current terms of the scholarship. >> san francisco police held a community meeting. they're doing so tonight on a proposed plan to bring a surveillance system to 16th and mission streets in an effort to improve public safety there. the meeting starts at about 05:30am, tonight. it's being held at the mission police station on the let's see a street members of the public encouraged to attend. this is part of the city's public safety camera ordinance plan
