ground. and as the camera pans from this chopper view, you can see how fast this area is. fortunately, no homes have been damaged or destroyed. and that was a water drop. i believe that chopper was making, but certainly it seems like the winds may have died down a bit. but been dangerous wind conditions today that's expected through tomorrow. so another dangerous situation in la as they have been through it the past 2 weeks. certainly, boy, have they ever. and you know, this is all going on in the dark as they're trying to fight this thing. >> also, as the palisades, the eaton fires there near full containment. now, knew weather is looming there. this is separate from the fire that started today talking about the fires that have burned in officials are saying those burn zones. those burn scar areas. >> could seat maybe half an inch of rain this weekend, which is good and bad. the

ground is already unstable from the fires and that rain, they say could increase the risk of mudslides. kareen wynter has a closer look at what people are doing to get ready. >> bracing for another potential disaster while fire-ravaged communities from the eaton and palisades fires that burn scar areas could see more devastation this weekend. the threat of mudslides with expected rainfall on the way the threat of mud and debris flow in our fire impacted communities is real. the county led by our department of public works has been taking aggressive measures to clear potential hazards ahead. >> of the rain storms and the county public works has already mobilized storm patrols with other reinforcements in the works. we are going to be active tomorrow in the burn areas. you will see full-scale crews including >> crews from the national guard from state, california. oh, yes, from state dwr from la county, flood control district along with city's road departments deploying

best management practices or sediment traps throughout the burn meteorologists predict this upcoming storm may not bring enough precipitation to trigger mudslides in burn scar regions. >> the southland could get a good dose of some much needed rainfall. yesterday i spoke with the governor emphasized that. for our communities. decimated by fires. we must respond with urgency to protect from future disasters. >> governor gavin newsom also taking proactive measures going specialized debris flow teams to sow cow to help protect communities with specialized equipment for possible hazardous debris flow rapidly during the storm. the county is the lead for the region on this critical work to to clear to clear debris from watershed, prevent landslides and mudslides ahead of upcoming rains. we are the lead of a partnership that is happening with state and federal partners and working together. we will be able to provide this service for the

entire la county region burned scar areas from the eaton and palisades fires have little to no vegetation and a particularly vulnerable to heavy rainfall. officials say they're preparing for the worst case scenario that could further damage or destroy homes and put lives at risk here at the santa monica airport near the palisades fire crews set up a staging area for debris. cleanup. >> that included 10,000 care rails. and 25,000 gravel bags just in case of a disaster. >> and that was kareen wynter reporting for us. so you don't want do could have would have should have. you can imagine if this rain that is reportedly coming just calm week. i know earlier just generally are yeah. in january, it might help to know keep the fires from spreading. yeah, but i'm glad to see stage in for the possibility of rain and mud slides right now because here we are in the middle of winter season at some point they're going to get some rain may not get a lot from this storm system. this may not be able enough to trigger mudslides, but eventually we're going to get there. we're going to see some

heavy rain on the way. want to show you this drought monitor map and you can see. >> all the way from the bay area all the way into southern parts of the state and or they are under severe drought conditions right now. they have had 1600's of an inch of rain in downtown los angeles. can you believe that? that's all they've had for the entire season. so, yeah, extremely dry there. now you get those strong. santa ana winds kicking in and well, they've just been terrible and extremely bone-dry conditions outside. you're at 5% right now. relative humidity in santa clarita that is like desert dry. and remember, that's where a lot of this air is coming in right out over the desert coming over the top mountains and drying out even further as it begins to subside and seek an approach the coastline but dangerous place to get that fire going in the cast daycare in the mountains there in the canyon. there is a reservoir a reservoir that continues there probably able to draw some water from there. but the winds have a whip and so strong over the mountain tops are still talking. 65 on our winds across the mountain. so fire weather warnings have been extended now until friday

morning. we're hoping we do get that rain there. but that's not the only place that could have issues. the greater los angeles area, even though the winds have backed off right now, they're likely to continue and the dry conditions as well and further south, we've got more dry weather as well. but look at the humidity all around. you're down to 3% and yorba linda chinos checking in at 5%, ontario. so very, very dry conditions makes it easy. if a fire were to start, things could spread rather rapidly. and that continues all the way toward a san diego as well. what they need to some rain, they may just get a few showers this weekend. hopefully more to come as we head in toward february. >> all right, lawrence, our parent company nexstar media group is partnering with the red cross to raise some money for wildfire victims. you can scan the qr code to help out. the family of an elderly woman who police say was pushed in front of a bart train in san francisco last summer is now suing the transit agency. 74 year-old corps and and then was waiting for her train home at the powell street station.

>> when she was pushed to her death as kron four's terisa susko reports the lawsuit claims bart is not safe and doesn't protect people. >> the family says that bart is putting lives at risk and that is why they say that they are taking this action. >> i can't express the amount of hurt. that my family has gotten through. that is the nephew, of course, owned and down the 74 year-old daly city resident shown here. >> was known as a generous, compassionate woman who loved to cook for her colleagues and care for her family members. but on july first 2024 5 minutes after dan dan left her job as a telephone operator park hilton hotel and downtown san francisco. the family says that she was pushed from the platform at the powell street bart station and later died of her injuries. it's not just him. >> there's a lot of people out there. >> cool. >> it's just circling that train station. i know because the moment that that happened

to my on i went to that station myself and there's about a dozen, you know, people in there who i didn't feel safe, just we're going to that station. what more a female at, you know, 11, 11, 30. >> on wednesday, dan dance family announced a lawsuit against bart claiming that the public transportation agency failed in its job to protect passengers such as dan tan court documents, state that trevor belmont had been banned from bart, adding that he had been arrested at least 27 times and 2018. he had been convicted and engaging in lewd conduct when he exposed himself on bart. >> we are. filing this complaint. to make sure it doesn't happen again to to anybody else. a criminal is now under. you know, investigation for murder, appalling. >> bart is on notice. you have to stop and make these trains

and stations say for riders. this is appalling as far out lawsuit claims wrongful death. >> elder abuse as well as public endangerment. we reached out to bark that they did not have a comment about the lawsuit in san francisco. theresa kron. 4 news. in the south bay. several people have been arrested after police say they were involved. >> and a large burglary operation that spanned across santa clara county officers say that the trio they are now facing more than 70 counts of burglary. police have identified the suspects as alberto viejo gonzalo ramos and jaime arroyo. police say that they stole more than a million dollars in items like jewelry and other valuables, specifically from asian households in san jose cupertino, saratoga, campbell, in mountain view. officers say they believe the group burglarized dozens of homes in other cities. people search

warrants were executed in the cities of stockton, hayward and french camp with the suspects are from during the operation. we recovered a large trove of evidence, including over 700 pieces of stolen property ranging from hundreds of pieces of jewelry, large amounts of foreign currency purses, luxury watches and family heirlooms. police say that there may be more victims out there. anyone with information is being asked to call san jose police. >> today state lawmakers held their first committee hearing of governor newsom's special legislative session. the bills that they took up include billions of dollars in emergency fire aid and another one focusing on paying for legal battles against president trump. court orders. capitol correspondent eytan wallace reports. >> with that the state assembly budget committee officially gavel, governor gavin newsom, special legislative session. i am pleased to call this hearing to order at this. the first assembly hearing of the

special session members took up the governor's proposal to allocate 2 and a half billion dollars for emergency fireaid 4 million dollars to help with building inspections and expedited approval for reconstruction and 1 million dollars for impacted schools, republicans and democrats agreeing with this approach calling for to be approved as soon as possible. we are committed to standing with folks in these impacted communities every step of the way. i'm encouraged by we calling this extraordinary session on this issue and i completely agree with the chair. this is the beginning. we have a long ways to go from here as part of that long ways to go members from both sides of the aisle say it's vital the fire make it to all impacted areas, including the lower economic communities where there isn't as much of an incentive to come in invest to rebuild. so i think that's something to talk about. look at, but beyond fire 8, there was a bipartisan call for more fire prevention, including one proposal for cal fire to hire more full-time firrfighters instead of part-time

firefighters brought on for just certain seasons time cal fire. as a year-round agency. it's crazy that our state department, our state fire department. >> he's not year-round. >> pension truly is our best medicine. the cost of making cal-fire year round is minimal compared to the cost of continual response to these kinds of disasters. and i think our communities are saying enough is enough of this. and i was just encouraged by the fact that so many folks want to work together on this issue. >> we have a lot of work ahead of us come to order. but later in the day in the senate budget committee, it was a different story as lawmakers took up the other bills of the special session. among them proposals to allocate 25 million dollars to the attorney general to help fund a future lawsuit against the trump administration. then there's a bill to fund another. 25 million dollars for immigration-related legal services in the state.

republicans say that is the wrong approach. they instead want california to do away with that sanctuary status. we're not as a state directly. >> working with immigration, too, to connect him with those folks that have and do pose a safety threat because of our sanctuary status. so that's that's my concern. but democrats disagree. they believe california must spend money to fight against mass deportations. the president, united states. >> unbelievable terror and saying we're going port. >> all of you. that threat is absolutely real. i these dollars, although we we would love to have triple the amount 100 fully amount will go a long way. >> and these hearings were strictly informational. so no formal action was taken. lawmakers are expected to formally vote on the emergency fire aid package in the next 24 hours. and on the trump related bills next week reporting at the state tom wallace kron 4 news

fire department helped out by partnering with the nonprofit and opened its doors to donors. >> the fremont fire department put out a public call for help. the community responding by showing up dropping in arm and donating blood. i've been donating blood for years. totally worth it. >> yeah, worth whatever i had to do this today. fremont fire chiefs rated e as among the donors. she says her department partnered with the american red cross to host a blood drive at its administration building wednesday because the nonprofit is in desperate need been unable to collect donations. >> in la because of the fires and the and the winter. >> storms has resulted in 500 cancel blood drives nationally. and collectively we've missed out on 12,000 units of blood collected. the red cross says donors of all types, particularly type o negative blood donors and those giving platelets are essential to saving lives.
