news. the cause of the fire remains unknown. tonight. the smoke, though. >> forced the temporary closure of the 5 freeway through the grapevine in both directions. tonight, firefighters are attacking those flames from the air and the ground hoping to gain even more control before any santa ana winds increase in the overnight hours. chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is here. lawrence, it's a good sign that the crews are able to fight it from above. that means the the winds aren't as terrible as they were a couple of weeks ago with the palisades fire. yeah, they do have cast lake right there as well. so they've got a water they can dip into. >> to help fight that fire. unfortunately, southern california has hardly had any rainfall at all after a long, hot summer. now we're talking about 18, 100's of an inch of rain since the beginning of the wet season. so-called wet season. so our drought monitor showing you there under severe drought conditions right now. and so things are going to continue to burn in that area until we get some significant rain. and so offshore winds.

the santa ana winds pretty typical this time of year there once again, firing up some gusty winds all around those active fires. see the fire in the castaic area and also a very strong gusty offshore winds continuing and dry conditions down below 10%. so very combustible right now. you get that low. as far as the relative humidity in the temperatures. yeah. by day it was in the 70's again. we've got fire weather warnings in effect. they're expecting that the blow back towards more populated areas that is an area in and around 6 flags magic mountain along i-5. if you've driven down that way before. but they're not the only ones with issues really continue to see problems all across the los angeles basin and all the way down in the san diego fire conditions there, expecting gusty winds for the next 24 to 48 hours. florence, thank you. jose police department facing a federal civil rights lawsuit. >> over a violent canine attack. we blurred the video because it is graphic and some viewers may find it to be disturbed. and attorney

representing fernando villanueva galvez says the police dog ripped a chunk of her clients. you're off. we'll also biting into his face other parts of his head and his arms. police used the canine while responding to a stabbing at an apartme t complex back in october 2023. investigators say villanueva galvez was told to surrender and they waited outside of his apartment for several hours before sending in the police dog. and the video shows the canine latched onto villanueva galvez his arm. his face was bloodied and officers were failing to get the dog to let go. the attorney says the canine was being used as an uncontrolled weapon. and now they're suing the department over excessive force. >> refused to let go. you know, officers a pretty big guys. and second strong guy was using all of his might to try to physically remove the socked in by the dog is

inside was able to safely evacuate, though no injuries reported. the cause is under investigation. there was a major police response in the east bay this evening after resident reported finding a box containing military explosives, pleasant hill police, the walnut creek police department's bomb squad personnel with u.s. air force responded to the home on shirley drive this afternoon and safely removed everything. they say there's no active criminal investigation linked to the incident but no other details were the oakland unified school district is under pressure to close or merge some of its schools. >> according to a letter sent to the district by the alameda county office of education. ust is on track to run out of money by november and we'll be unable to meet its financial obligations unless it makes significant budget changes. usd is currently facing 152 million dollar budget deficit. the board has

considered merging 10 schools that share the campus, but they still have not voted on the option. the education office is also reported a fiscal adviser for the oakland unified school district. the district says they're going to be working closely with an adviser to find a solution. >> in the north bay, sports is out at sonoma state university. the school announced today they're getting rid of the entire athletics department and making other significant cuts to deal with some significant budget issues. kron 4 sarah stinson has reaction from students and faculty. >> sonoma state students tell me the news about the cuts came through an email wednesday morning on the second day of the spring semester. every single student i spoke with says this has them in disbelief, but they also say this has the morning to transfer to another university. i was honestly shocked because my roommate, he's on the baseball team. >> and he was completely like she was shocked to it was actually really shocking. we did not think about having

whatsoever to do with state students in disbelief after learning about the university's plans to layoff faculty, eliminate academic departments and cut the entire athletics program. student athletes will remain eligible to receive scholarships as long as they meet the current requirements. but to first year, students on the women's soccer team say this disrupts their four-year college plan we all had like offers everywhere else and chose here for soccer. and so now it just makes us all want to leave 11 division. 2 ncaa teams will be cut by this fall. the university says they have to address a nearly 24 million dollar deficit projected for next school year. know a lot of athletes are in the same boat like they came here for the score. academics is also getting a major hit with more than 20 degree programs being cut. i'm going to happen they limited my major completely. nicholas froehlich is a first year astrophysics major. he says while he got a 4 last semester, he still left

scrambling to figure out where he'll continue his education. and it's just a big letdown because, you know, it's a nice cool off like i have a lot of friends here. 46 faculty members will be let go. there's a lot fear. a lot of consternation, chicano and latino studies, professor ronald lopez says his department has been spared, but the cutbacks are still affecting him. cutting a large, you cold apartments and faculty. >> is going to have a ripple effect across the entire institution. and the rest of us are going to do our best. but under very stressful conditions. the university is citing a 38% drop in enrollment since 2015. but students say the changes will only cause enrollment to drop even further because who wants to go to a school with no athletics seem like. >> the university, if there's no sports will be a town hall on campus on january 30th, where people can get more information and ask questions. >> i'm sara stinson reporting at sonoma state. back to. >> still ahead on kron, 4 news

live. look at tonight's night sky. yeah. above the embarcadero here in san francisco, we hope that the weather would hold up. i was afraid i was going to say, but lawrence has been talking about a lot of rain cut. we need the rain february on its time. so what's going on? lawrence? hate to rain on your parade. yeah, but usually that's kind of an issue for the chinese new year's parade. but >> we'll have to wait and see on that. looks like we're getting ready for a major pattern shift after a very dry january outside. still, we're going to squeeze in at least one more really warm day. i clear skies out there right now. it's going to be very cold in spots overnight. not of coles was last night, but closer still see some temperatures dropping off in the 30's. get cold out there already. 42 in palo alto. it's 47 in fremont 40 in dublin right now. 39 now officially in napa. 36 in fairfax, 34 in fairfield and 37 degrees in vacaville. so dry air out there right now. temperatures

could be falling off. ross. yep. likely to see that again. all the way up to santa rosa, the napa valley and parts of the east bay to these temperatures. yeah, get really chilly again. maybe not the 20's, but you're still talking 30's. lot of 40's even inside the bay and low 40's as you make your way towards san jose and also the mountain view. so a cold night out there dry so far looks like things are just about to change long range pattern. looking a little more impressive now as it looks like we're going to see whole phase shift in the pattern. that's really important. we've been stuck under this. a ridge of high pressure, pretty static pattern, but that's about to change. a watch over it starts to flatten out. finally, as we head into friday, a few more clouds begin to skirt across our skies. weak system, kind of rotating in all right. over the sierra nevada, you can see bringing with it a slight chance of showers here in the bay area. snow in the high country then rotate down to southern california. it's great news for them. they could definitely use the rain. and i don't think it's gonna be real. heavy rain on southern california. but make it into a more extensive rain as we get in toward the beginning of this next month. that model start to pay another chance of rain as we head in toward the following
