the north bay hills and then out along the coastline, half moon bay around 30, 40 miles per hour gusts. this morning's some of us are comparatively calm and a lot of that wind is dependent on where your temperatures are this morning. i should say where your temperatures are as dependent on if you got the wind palo alto at 36 degrees. oakland at 47 breezy up in berkeley, which means your head, 59 degrees. so some of us are hanging out right around 60 degrees while others are right around freezing like up in santa rosa and fairfield at 33. so quite the ride, variety of temperatures going on this morning. we do have frost advisories for the inland east bay and much of the north bay to mostly removed from the map in areas like san mateo county and santa clara county. so not quite as cold on average as it was yesterday. as for you what you can expect today with daytime highs. it's back to the 60's and even some low 70's, another mild and sunny

representing fernando, the lenawee vogue. al, this is the police dog ripped a chunk of her clients ear also biting into his face, all the parts of his head arm. police used a cane while responding to a stabbing at apartment complex back in october of 2023. investigators say villanueva galv as was told to surrender and they waited outside his apartment for several hours before the sun to the canine. the show's the police dog latched onto villanueva kelvis arm. his face was bloodied and police officers were failing to get the dog to let go. attorney says the canine was being used as uncontrolled weapon. now suing the department over excessive force. a dog. >> refused to let go. you know, the officers a pretty big guy as a second strong guy was using all of his might to try to physically remove the socked in by the dog is continuing 2. why not to attack the is missing out but bottom, half of this year,

multiple people are displaced after fire broke out at a san jose apartment complex. crews responded to the billion loss connell's on wooden row. this is around 2 o'clock wednesday afternoon after multiple reports of flames and smoke, firefighters say 7 units were burned and for extensive wind damage. everyone inside the building was able to safely get out. no injuries were reported. the cause is under investigation. well, when you find school district under pressure to either close or merge some of their schools, according to a letter sent to the district by the alameda county office of education. usd is on track to run out of money by november. they're going to be unable to meet their financial obligations lest they find a significant budget change. usd is currently facing 152 million dollar budget deficit. so the board is considering merging 10 schools share campuses, but they still have not voted on that option. the education office has also appointed a financial adviser for ou st. the district says they're gonna work closely with the adviser to try and find a solution. well, in the north

bay, sports is out at sonoma state university. the school announced wednesday to get rid of the entire athletics department and the big in some other big changes because of the budget for sarah stinson has that story. >> sonoma state students tell me the news about the cuts came through an email wednesday morning on the second day of the spring semester. every single student i spoke with says this has them in disbelief, but they also say this as the morning to transfer to another university. i was honestly shocked because my roommate, he's on the baseball team. >> and he was completely like she was shocked to it was actually really shocking. we did not think that happened whatsoever. sonoma state students in disbelief after learning about the university's plans to layoff faculty, eliminate academic departments and cut the entire athletics program. student athletes will remain eligible to receive scholarships as long as they meet the current

requirements. but to first year, students on the women's soccer team say this disrupts their four-year college plan we all had like offers everywhere else and chose here for soccer. and so now it just makes us all want to leave 11 division. 2 ncaa teams will be cut by this fall. the university says they have to address a nearly 24 million dollar deficit projected for next school year. know a lot of athletes are in the same boat like they came here for their score. academics is also getting a major hit with more than 20 degree programs being cut. i'm going to have they limited my major, completely. nicholas froehlich is a first year astrophysics major. he says while he got a 4 last semester, he still left scrambling to figure out where he'll continue his education. and it's just a big letdown because, you know, it's a nice cool off like i have a lot of friends here. 46 faculty members will be let go. there's a lot fear. a lot of consternation, chicano and latino studies, professor ronald lopez says his

augustine ort has tried getting inside of a plane. deputies say ort has been trying to still another plane but was unsuccessful and ran away. former san jose police union manager will avoid jail time after illegally importing drugs from foreign suppliers last october. joanne suh govia confess to ronnie and illegal drug smuggling operation out of her home. federal prosecutors say she was motivated by addiction and not greed. and the city of san jose. they're unveiling a new affordable housing project dedicated to housing, former foster youth. now young people enrolled in the program are going to move into those apartments. these new residents will be joined in their move in by the city mayor at 02:00pm. >> let's look outside at this view from east bay hills. and as you can see, we are nice and clear out there. there's no fog yet again this morning. we are a little bit on. the windy side, though, especially up in the east bay and north bay hills and out along the

coastline. you probably heard that last night and that's leading to a large variation in temperatures. spots like berkeley. you're at 59 degrees right now. well, up in santa rosa, you're hanging out a lot closer to freezing. so it all just depends on exactly where you're at. as far as our current conditions go, that high pressure is not here for long. in low is about to dive in this weekend. and with that, we have quite the switch up happening this weekend. now. want to break it down for you in detail now. so today, tomorrow, your thursday or friday, nice and dry comes saturday, though, towards saturday afternoon and evening. the bay area could see a few very light showers. this sierra a few inches of snowfall. again, this is later in the day saturday, saturday night into sunday. this low traverses a little bit further southward in sunday. looking like a day that will bring some much needed rain and much more significant rain in the bay area will get for southern california. we will continue to see those snow showers up in the sierra for your sunday to some needed snow up there.

all in all even into monday could be some lingering southern california showers. the bay area long dry at that point. how much rain are we looking at here will get a close look at these numbers on the map as we get a little bit closer. you can see that the bay area could see nothing more than just a few light showers. more likely for areas a little further inland and a little bit further southward. the sierra those couple inches of snowfall still absolutely panning out. well, southern california, this is decent rainfall by no means really breaking this drought conditions that have evolved down in the southern part of the state. but san diego quarter of an inch, an la coming close to quarter of an inch. it's something that we absolutely do need to see. so we will take it even if it's not that much. we still do have red flag warnings. and as you know, we do have that new fire that broke out yesterday right around the grapevine actually having i-five points over the past. 24 hours as that fires had a rapid spread, those red flag warning still

exist until 08:00pm for about this areas in southern california here locally. we are looking at temperatures right back to the 60's and in some cases, some of us to get close if not to 70 degrees today. san bruno at 64 degrees. we've got foster city at 65 south bay temperatures. 71 in san jose, morgan hill. 72, this is january. these are 70's. this is very warm for this time of year. union city, san leandro, walnut creek, all getting close to that 70 degree mark today, north bay mid to upper 60's for you. santa rosa, though, after freezing this morning, you'll get up to 70 degrees later on today. so today is definitely a warm one. we will be looking at a few clouds tomorrow and temperatures still mild. a cooldown this weekend with some afternoon to evening showers on saturday sunday, a slight chance of a lingering shower before clearing out for your last week of january.

roadways this morning doing okay. we are looking at 8 minute commute across the bay bridge. no back up just yet. hopefully we can hold onto these clear conditions for a little bit longer. 7 minutes of the richmond, sandra fell the golden gate moving along without any slowdowns, all right, john, thanks for that. so yesterday we first brought you the story. we were talking about ice agents. >> now being able to re churches and schools. the department of homeland security says under the new policy called criminals will no longer be able to hide in america's schools and churches to avoid arrests. prior to that reversal, officers were usually required to get approval for any enforcement operations that school and church is except for cases like in national security. now the move is causing lot of bay area residents to be fearful of possible deportation. they're even afraid to leave their homes yesterday, a community resource center in san francisco's mission district sot less attendees unusual for a food pantry event. many of those who did show up expressed concerns over the crackdown.

description trying to make a stop resulted in the driver. flynn at high speed chase ended when the suspect crashed a car into a concrete block before running on foot. and also shortly after spotted a rideshare car nearby. discover the suspect inside man from east policy was arrested in the car. he crashed stolen from one of his neighbors just around the corner. police arrested a man tuesday night for breaking into a taco bell in pittsburgh. they say they responded to a video alarm on century boulevard. they found the suspect inside the restaurant. when police arrived, they spotted him casually strolling away. carrion some stolen taco bell items. the man was arrested and booked into the contra costa county jail. happening today. the people are going to be rally outside of the travis air force base in fairfield, the protesting against u.s. military aid and weapons, the in supply to israel. so this is video from the protests last november. 28 people were arrested following demonstration against the violence happening in the middle east. organizers say they are glad for the

areas are generally are colder spots. palo alto at 37 dublin in concord in the mid 30's, santa rosa. 33 you head up into the hills, though. it is an entirely different story. the berkeley hills are hanging out right around 60 degrees right now. so from 60 to freezing, it is definitely not a uniform morning across the bay area. we do have a few frost advisories not near as many as yesterday, mostly just in the inland east bay and upper elevations of the north bay moving into the afternoon today, do expect temperatures in the 60's and 70's today in some cases will be warmer than yesterday was. so if you've got some time, another one to get out there and enjoy. >> asked on the roads that some of these fairly enjoyable. so part 10 minutes across the bay bridge. that's not bad. metering lights tend to turn on here in about 15 to 20 minutes, though. so, you know that lack of a backup won't last 7 minutes at the richmond center fell and doing

just fine at the golden gate. >> right. all right, john, thank for that. happening today, california attorney general rob bonta is set to make a major announcement on the opiate crisis in the state. the powerful drugs of claim 1000 lives right here in california. in recent years. proffers joey horta is live in san francisco with more on how real the situation is here in the bay area. joey morning. >> yeah, good morning to you. yeah, we're going to hear from a man in a moment here whose life was destroyed by this drug. he says by opioids. he says it cost him his family, his home and forced him to live in the streets of san francisco to feed his addiction. but he's just one example. take a look at the numbers right here. according to the california department of public health, the latest statewide numbers which are from 2023 show more than 7500 people have died from an opioid overdose. more than 6800 of those from fentanyl and more than 22,000 ended up in the emergency room over 13 million opioid

prescriptions were written in california. those numbers tell a powerful story. one you can see firsthand on the streets of san francisco every day and tenderloin neighborhood notorious for this tom wolf of daly city tells us that he became addicted to opioids after having surgery. he got hooked on fentanyl and found himself homeless in the tenderloin. >> you're not sick street going to the tenderloin over by un plaza and that open drug scene. is there. it's just it just continues to remain still, you know, 5, 6, 7, 100 people deep in that area right there with dozens and dozens of organized drug dealer selling fentanyl. >> it's a trap that he fell into back in 2018 and after a long battle, tom says he is now in recovery for 6 years. now. well, coming up here at 09:00am we're expecting to hear from the attorney general rob bonta on what the state is doing to tackle the opioid crisis. more on that later
