crystal clear skies and chilly conditions and windy conditions. all back with us this morning. >> right behind me, you can see downtown san francisco looking up, salute the gorgeous on such a clear morning. we got your view from mount tam looking down the bay. also, crystal clear now it depends a lot how strong your winds are impacting how your temperatures have gotten spots like half moon bay, which are very breezy, are actually are more mild areas up in the berkeley hills. it's also quite mild right now due to some strong winds. but those calmer areas right along the bay shore and up in the north bay. that's where you're seeing are cold temps double in palo alto conquered as well as santa rosa in petaluma all down in the 30's right now. take a look at berkeley, though. you're at 60 degrees and a very windy in berkeley right now. so the direct correlation between those 2 factors adding up to quite a variety in temperatures. we do have frost advisories in the in the north and east bay. those will be in effect through 09:00am this morning in mostly for those lower elevations where winds are generally calmer. as for

mind a couple issues out there this morning. darya james, back to you. thank you. in a 602. and happening today, california attorney general rob bonta set to make a major announcement on. >> the opioid crisis here across the state now the powerful drug has claimed thousands of lives. >> across california in recent years and cropper's joey horta standing by live in san francisco with more on the real situation that that poses here in the bay area. joey? >> yeah, good morning, guys. we're about to hear from a man who says that opioids destroyed his life causing him to live in the streets to feed his addiction. but he's just one example. take a look at the numbers here that really tell the story of how deadly drug is really in the state, according to the california department of public health, the latest statewide numbers showing from 2023 more than 7500 people have died from an opioid overdose in california. more than 6800 of those from fentanyl and more than 22,000 ended up in emergency room over 13 million opioid

prescriptions are written across the state. those numbers tell a powerful story, one that you can see firsthand on the streets of san francisco every day, the tenderloin neighborhood is notorious for this. and that's where tom wolf of daly city tells us he ended up. >> really late-stage addiction with heroin and fentanyl addiction. that all started off of opioids. painkillers after a had surgery back in 2015. and that spiraled into heroin and fentanyl addiction. and let me to homelessness on the streets of san francisco in 2018. >> it's a trap he fell into after a long battle. but tom says he is now in recovery. we're expecting to hear from the california attorney general at 9 o'clock this morning on the steps of the state is taking now to tackle the opioid crisis. they say it's going to be an important announcement to that. it's coming up later for now. back to you. all right. thanks a

lot, tony. >> 604 is the time the pacific. a school district voted late last night to close ocean shore elementary school. and that sparked a wave of backlash crown for stephanie rothman has the latest. >> families flooded in griddy lacey school. one of the schools that has now proposed to take on hundreds of relocated students. the school board now facing backlash for many who say that decision quickly and without consideration. >> families, teachers and students rallying wednesday, head of a school board meeting to decide the fate of an elementary school. many parents say they are upset over how the district has been moving forward with the proposal. >> it felt suspicious. it unusual because normally the the administration and the school community has a lot of communication transparency in this case. they snuck right after the new york. >> and ocean shore school k 5 closes 400 students will be relocated to sunset ridge school at the start of next

i don't think the kids who really like the school will be happy make me. >> despite the board's vote, many families say they will continue fighting to keep their schools open. reporting in pacifica, stephanie rothman kron. 4 news. >> well, the oakland unified school district now under pressure to close or merge some of its schools, according to a letter sent to the district by the alameda county office of education, usd is on track right now to run out of money by november and will be unable to meet its financial obligations unless it make significant budget changes. usd is currently facing 152 million dollar deficit. the board has considered merging 10 schools that currently share campuses. but they have still not had a vote on that option. the education office has also appointed a fiscal adviser for the district. district says it will work closely with that adviser to find a solution. >> time to good and just cause. and after i

>> the sunnyvale family has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit. now connection with the police shooting that killed their teenage son last year. we have body camera footage of the incident. we want to warn you, you may find it disturbing to watch, but here is a portion of it. this video recorded in march of last year. you can see a son of police officer shooting at 19 year-old emmanuel perez. but sarah? police say they responded to a mobile home park to a call about naked man walking around the area. an officer shot the teen as he was walking towards him. the lawyer representing the family says officers didn't follow protocol that day and we used a firearm or use of a firearm should have been the last resort. >> and he found himself that day and mental health crises. this was a young man had enough awareness. what he was experiencing and his family

was not there, that he called 9-1-1. looking for help. >> the family says they're ready to take the case all the way to trial and in the next coming days are going to go to court to schedule an appointment with attorneys to prepare their case. it's 608, and the san jose police department's facing a federal civil rights lawsuit over a canine attack. >> we have blurred the video because it's graphic and you may find it disturbing. those are the cries of a man named fernando villanueva galv as and here he is after the police dog took a chunk out of his ear. you can see there and that his face and parts of the head and arms and neck. police are using that canine to respond to a stabbing that happened in an apartment complex and october of 2023. investigators say that villanueva gal thas was told

to surrender and they waited outside of his apartment for several hours before sending in the canine. the video shows the police dog latching on to his arm and officers. he said failed to get the dog let go. the attorney says the canine was being used as an uncontrolled weapon. in that case and they are suing the department for excessive force. >> refused to let you know, the officers a pretty big second strong guy was using all of his might to try to physically remove the socked in by the dog is continuing 2. why not to attack is missing. but bottom, half of his years, not just your low. this is the defendant part of this year. he does have hearing loss now of that year. he has very deep his arm because intervene and just want hold the san jose

with trying to steal an airplane from the sonoma county airport in october. a 29 year-old augustine ortiz. they say tried to get in a plane and then tried to steal another plane, but a mechanic stopped him. he was unsuccessful, ended up running away and they say they found and arrested him. police arrested a man for breaking into a taco bell in pittsburgh. the video alarm went off tuesday night at this taco bell on century boulevard. and when officers found the suspect he had some stolen taco bell items on him. the city of san jose is unveiling a new affordable housing project and it's dedicated to housing. former foster youth, 9 young people enrolled in the program will move into the apartments and these new residents we'll at would be with the mayor today for a press conference unveiling a 2 o'clock.

>> out there, take a look at this view at downtown san francisco where skies are crystal clear because so much of the rest of the country is in the midst of a deep freeze. san francisco is actually one of the warmest places in the country right now at 58 degrees near 60 to start off the morning. and that's because of some breezy conditions. it's the same in half. moon bay are breezier spots are more mild areas this morning. we're a calmer spots like conquered and santa rosa are down in the 30's to kick things off. high pressure ridge no longer towards the weekend. a load ives and this is a pretty moisture deprived low-pressure system. so it's not a huge system. but what it does do for us is late saturday into sunday result in a few sprinkles for the bay area. some light snowfall up in the sierra. but for socal from saturday, sunday, even into monday, a fairly decent amount of rainfall panning out. and this is absolutely excellent news for them. of course, as we have seen recent fires now comes the risk of some mudslides, some debris

flows because there are burn scars in southern california that are absolutely fresh with no root structures to secure that least ground. as for where we're sitting with our future cast of rainfall totals, very light sprinkles for the bay area towards the weekend. the system is not a big rainmaker for us. it will result in a few inches of snowfall in the sierra and about a quarter of an inch of rainfall for southern california for some parts of the southern part of the state. this will be the most rainfall in the only rainfall they've seen literally since last rain season. and that's been one of the reasons that we've seen such a very odd fire season in the middle of january. the dry offshore winds, the lack of rainfall. we still do have red flag warnings with that rapidly expanding fire right along the grapevine actually closing i-5 at points last night into this morning. temperatures in the 60's pretty much across the board except for one particular area that's going to be even warmer than the 60's today. and that's the south bay rising well into the

70's. it is about to be an exceptionally warm january day for spots like morgan hill at 72 in san jose at 71 60's. pretty widespread for the east bay, oakland, you'll be close to 70 at 68 degrees today. this is within striking distance of records and very much so unseasonably warm santa rosa all the way up to 70 yourself now today. and tomorrow are the warmer days of this forecast as that low passes near bias towards saturday and sunday. we'll start that cooldown process into the 50's in afternoon to evening shower on saturday is possible after a mostly sunny morning with just a slight chance of some lingering sprinkle sunday morning right now. all right, john, let's continue following this breaking news on our roads this morning. >> right now, there's no bart service between antioch, north conquered because someone drove a car onto the tracks. photo of the aftermath right near the pittsburg bay point station. bart officials are saying riders should go to the north congress station to get to next rain. we're going to be following this and keep you updated. we know that crews

>> 6.25 and a major police response in the east bay. when a resident reported finding a box full of military explosives pleasant hill. police responded at this was the walnut creek police bomb squad responded and also personnel with the u.s. air force. they all went to the home where this was repord on shirley drive yesterday afternoon and everything was removed safely and there was no active criminal investigation that is ongoing. they didn't give us any other details, though, of where that box came from. >> in the south bay, the cost of living has seen a major increase in santa clara county. in fact, it's reported that the cost of living has gone up faster than wages across all income levels, even though the median income has gone up nearly 75% of the last 10 years. the price of a two-bedroom apartment has gone up 90% during that same period

mother. julia now remembered her son. >> was kind and helping everybody using all his skills. his knowledge. she was in place at time. the steps should be taken. how to reduce the accidents lives lost. >> well, the crash is still an active police investigation. the sfmta says they're also taking necessary measures now to reduce speeding at that intersection. in the east bay. a man convicted in december of killing 2 young women and fremont. 39 years ago is sentenced to life in prison on tuesday. 63 year-old david misch was sentenced to 2. 25 years to life prison sentences for the murder of jennifer dewey and michelle xavier. back in 1986, their bodies were found in a remote area after attending a birthday party and fremont dna evidence partial license plate found on one of the victims tied mission to the murders. he was

already serving a life sentence for the 1989 kidnapping and murder of 9 year-old mikhaela garrett in hayward. he's going to be a rain or he's going to be serving. his new sentence is now after completing the 18 years to life sentence for the murder of garrett. >> its 6.36, and the family of a woman who was pushed in ended up dying at a bart station last year is now suing bart. they accuse the transit agency of failing to protect the public last year. 74 year-old corazon dan down was pushed in front of a moving bart train. she ended up dying of her injuries and a person has been arrested and charged in her death. family just announced a lawsuit against bart saying the agency failed in his job protect passengers. >> there's a lot of people out there. >> cool. >> it's just circling that train station. i know because the moment that that happened to my on i went to that station myself and there's

about a dozen, you know, people in there who i didn't feel safe, just we're going to that station. what more a female at, you know, 11, 11, 30. >> according to court documents, trevor belmont is the man who's accused of pushing her and he had already been banned from bart and had been arrested. >> 27 times prior. we have some new video showing masked people lurking outside a home in pleasanton before they broke in. here's the video. 3 people entered the home last week. the burglars got in through rear glass door and then in 10 minutes they were able to steal several items and leave all before the police got there and they were seen leaving the area in a light colored land rover with a stolen license plate. if you know anything about the case, you're asked to call the police.

>> well, in the north bay, sports is out at sonoma state university. the school announced wednesday. they're getting rid of their entire athletics department. extreme move. there also may see making some significant cuts to deal with budget problems. kron 4 sarah stinson has more. >> sonoma state students tell me the news about the cuts came through an email wednesday morning on the second day of the spring semester. every single student i spoke with says this has them in disbelief, but they also say this has the morning to transfer to another university. i was honestly shocked because my roommate, he's on the baseball team. >> and he was completely like she was shocked to it was actually really shocking. we did not think that happened whatsoever. sonoma state students in disbelief after learning about the university's plans to layoff faculty, eliminate academic departments and cut the entire athletics program. student athletes will remain eligible to receive scholarships as long as they meet the current

requirements. but to first year, students on the women's soccer team say this disrupts their four-year college plan we all had like offers everywhere else and chose here for soccer. and so now it just makes us all want to leave 11 division. 2 ncaa teams will be cut by this fall. the university says they have to address a nearly 24 million dollar deficit projected for next school year. know a lot of athletes are in the same boat like they came here for the score. academics is also getting a major hit with more than 20 degree programs being cut. i'm going to happen treachery. they limited my major completely. nicholas froehlich is a first year astrophysics major. he says while he got a 4 last semester, he still left scrambling to figure out where he'll continue his education. and it's jupt a big letdown because, you know, it's a nice cool off like i have a lot of friends here. 46 faculty members will be let go. there's a lot fear. a lot of consternation, chicano and latino studies, professor ronald lopez says his
