people all over the state. take a look at these numbers right here. preliminary data from the san francisco medical examiner revealing over 630 people died in 2024. in the city from an overdose. the majority of them fentanyl poisoning. that's lower than 2023 when the city saw deadliest year for overdoses with 800 accidental deaths. those numbers tell a powerful story when you'll see first hand on the streets of san francisco everyday tom wolf of daly city tells us that he ended up homeless in the tenderloin addicted to fentanyl until law enforcement eventually caught up with him. >> it was held accountable for the crimes that i was committing are the behaviors i was exhibiting as a result of my drug addiction. so whether that be stealing or shoplifting or holding drugs for the dealers. and you'll like i was doing to support my addiction. i was finally held accountable for those things. but, you know, it took 6

students rallying wednesday, head of a school board meeting to decide the fate of an elementary school. many parents say they are upset over how the district has been moving forward with the proposal. >> it suspicious. it unusual because normally the administration and the school community has a lot of communication transparency in this case. they snuck right after the new year. >> and ocean shore school k 5 closes 400 students will be relocated to sunset ridge school at the start of next school year, possibly using the gym and other non classroom space for learning with doubt. and eamon, to completion. that is new to crest. that shows that there's no planning. there's no pen. we don't know how they're going to hit us all and elomar school 6th through 8th grade program would moved in griddy lacey, middle school in the 2026, 2027 school year students of color and of lower income live in the north. and they want to make the only k 8 option all the way in the south. that seems very

cautious and races to me. astray shuns ran high during the pack school board >> morning to a recent report by the district enrollment over the past decade has decreased 17%. >> school officials believe a merger would help balance the budget if i school shuts down. i don't think the kids who really like the school will be happy take me. >> despite the board's vote, many families say they will continue fighting to keep their schools open. reporting in pacifica, stephanie rothman kron. 4 news. >> well, the oakland unified school district is under pressure to close or merge some of its schools to, according to a letter sent to the district by the alameda county office of education. usd is on track right now to run out of money by november and they'll be unable to meet their financial obligations unless it makes significant

budget changes. usd is currently facing 152 million dollar deficit. the board has considered merging 10 schools that currently share a campus, but they still haven't voted on that option yet. the education office has also appointed a fiscal adviser for the district, which school officials say they will work closely with to find a solution. >> time to good and just cause. and if the >> sunnyvale family has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit because of the police shooting that ended in the death of their teenage son last year. and we have some body cam video of the police response and what happened. we want to warn you, you may find this footage disturbing. this is video from march of last year when the sun actually was the one who called the police because he didn't know what to

do. you just knew something was wrong with himself. something was going on. so here you see the sonny bill police. they ended up shooting 19 year-old emmanuel perez basara police were responding to that call at the mobile home park to investigate. you know, a man who was walking around in the area naked in a clearly upset. so one officer ended up shooting that teenager who continue to walk towards him. the lawyer representing the family says officers did not follow protocol that day and using a firearm should have been the last resort. >> and he found himself that day mental health crises. this was a young man had enough awareness. what he was experiencing and his family was not there, that he called 9-1-1. looking for help. >> the family says that they are ready to take this case all the way to trial. and in

the next coming days, they are going to court don't be scheduling an appointment with the attorneys preparing the case. we want to give you the latest 8.11 now on the wildfires in southern california. the hughes fire. this is a new one that just started yesterday morning near cast lake in los angeles and ventura counties. and you can see all the smoke from it. more than 10,000 acres have burned since yesterday when it broke out. it's only 14% contained looking from above all of that black smoke about 31,000 people have been evacuated and thousands more are under evacuation warnings. the smoke from that fire is creating an extremely hazardous air quality situation in an area that already has been just flattened by fires. >> they limited my major completely doesn't seem like. >> inversely, if there's no sports. >> it did not think that happened whatsoever. >> still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news sonoma state

spots are calmer spots this weekend. we do finally see something to drink. break this dry trend, at least for some of us towards the saturday afternoon. low pressure starts to dive in. we could see a couple sprinkles for the bay area, but this is mostly going to be a sierra light snow maker with 3 to 4 inches of snow in the sierra and then saturday, sunday into monday around a quarter of an inch of rainfall for southern california. now, this is good news for sure is far as dampening those areas that are very dry been very fire active lately. the problem with this quarter of an inch of rain on those burn scars that are very fresh is the potential of mudslides and debris flows. so those in the vicinity of our recent fires are going to be concerned about that. a few inches of snow, as i mentioned in the sierra, maybe a sprinkle in the bay most likely further south. we do still have red flag warnings and actually extended through tomorrow morning in southern california yesterday, the hughes fire broke out right around the grapevine. in fact, closing the great find. i-5

having a major impact from. that's recent fire 60's for your highs for most of us today, although there are some 70's on the map and that includes some of us in the south bay where morgan hill, you can expect your daytime high today to reach 72 degrees. santa clara at 71 east bay times getting right close to 70 degrees. union city at 69 while oakland at 68, while the creek and concord at 66, some low 70's as well for a couple spots in the north bay. now, tomorrow is going to be a fairly mild one as well before a subtle weekend. cooldown back into the 50's slight chances of sprinkles. really nothing more than that for the bay reyna. >> a park service has been restored between indiana and north conquered. remember, there was early morning accident that impacted bart and also the highway the year. and we did have a 20 minute delay at one point, we no longer have a delay on the antioch line. so that's good

news. everything's moving along pretty nicely now that accident were just talking on the bart line also impacting the highways. it started here, but all lanes are currently open. this was bailey road. and so now things are a little bit slower because of that along highway 4 on the westbound side. but things are recovering 17 minutes into the city on the bay bridge. no accidents or hazards. their will want to want to be traveling for morgan hill up to san jose about 15 minutes. if you are going making your way along the east bay 8.80, are down to 37 around. 54 minutes starting. james, back to you. >> in the san jose police department is facing a federal civil rights lawsuit over a canine attack. and we have blurred out the video because it is a graphic encounter. take a look. that's fernando villanueva galv as who you here screaming in pain as a police dog was attacking him. and here he is after he was

bitten, as you can see on the face to head, the ears bitten off their his neck and other parts of his arms as well. the canine was responding and the police to this stabbing incident that happened at apartment complex and 2023 and investigators say that villanueva galv as was told to surrender and they waited outside his apartment for several hours before they sent in the canine. the video shows the police dog who has latched on to him biting him and he says that the officers we're failing to be able to get the dog off of him to stop biting. the attorney says the canine was being used in that case because of that as uncontrolled weapon. and now they're suing the department for excessive force. refused to let you know, the officers a pretty big guys. and second strong guy was using all of his might. >> to try to physically remove the socked in by the dog is

smuggling operation out of her home. she was smuggling for a supplier in india. so go if it was an office manager for the san jose police officers association planned social events. federal prosecutors say she was motivated by addiction and not greed. well, san jose city officials have narrowed down their candidates to fill the vacant seat on the city council. so on your screen right now are the list of potential candidates that are being suggested now to fill the district 3 seat that was left vacant by former councilmember omar torres. you may remember he resigned and was arrested in november for alleged child abuse. we have on the list. bob stadler, jamaal williams, danielle marie christian, karl eugene solace and baltasar lopez. all 5 will be interviewed on january. 28 1 will be appointed to represent the downtown area until voters can pick a permanent replacement during that special election that's scheduled for april. >> it's a 21. and despite pressure from the trump

administration officials in some bay area cities say they are committed to protecting immigrants and not helping arrest them. alameda county officials held a meeting in oakland yesterday announcing a new effort to uphold the protections of those who are at risk of being deported. >> i have asked president president david haubert to put forward a committee ad hoc committee that will protect our alameda county communities. i am very, very excited that we're moving forward in that regard. i hope that you will come and express support for that committee so that we can do the proactive work to protect to support and lift up our communities who might be fearful during this time. >> county officials have launched a website to that scott resources for the community, including a list of legal resources and also information on future workshops. >> aimed at educated, educating undocumented immigrants. >> and there's going to be hotline to answer any questions you have that should be up and ready by february.

hour at the time of the accident. kron four's lezla gooden has more on the story. >> this deadly crash took 27 year-old cal woman nichols life on sunday, i spoke with his mother who calls him isha. she says he is her youngest son and that his smile and heart touched. a lot of people was kind and helping everybody using all his skills his knowledge, he would never refuse. >> anyone meet julia mom to 27 year-old macau. better known as miesha be. she was involved in the 7 car collision at the intersection of 6th street between bryant and harrison originally from southern california. he called san francisco home for the last 4 years and worked as a computer engineer. his mother says she hasn't slept since the accident. he was in wrong place at time. she tells me he was very active, love nature and sports and hearing that he

was in another crash, difficult freeway exit ramp down here south orange county. it by a stolen car in pursued off multiple police units. >> and the cars with a total. but luckily there were no injuries and no lives lost at that time. we didn't have conclusion to that because even though physically me she was not hurt. but he was he was shaken emotionally, according to sfpd. the crash took place sunday night. >> and the tesla driver, 66 year-old jean has been arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter. waymo spokesperson tells us their vehicle was struck from behind by speeding car that was going about 98 miles per hour, adding that no was inside waymo during the crash and the steps should be taken how to

reduce the accidents >> lives lost on the street because it's everybody's safety. and she says he also dreamed of having a family someday and raising them. >> like how he grew up with her, adding that he will be deeply missed, especially by his brother, his irish twain. we also reached out to tesla for comment about this crash. >> but we have not heard back as of news time. and according to sapd, they say this still is an active investigation. reporting in the newsroom. let's go in kron. 4 news. >> 33 the time in the east bay, a man convicted in december of killing 2 young women in fremont 39 years ago is now sentenced to life in prison on tuesday. 63 year-old david misch was sentenced to 2 25 years to life prison sentences for the murders of jennifer dewey and michelle xavier. back in 1986, their bodies were found in a remote area after attending a birthday party at fremont dna

evidence and a partial license plate found on one of the victims tied misch to those murders. it was already actually serving a life sentence for the 1989 kidnapping and murder of 9 year-old micaela. garrett back. that was in hayward. he'll begin serving his new sentences after completing the 18 years to life sentence for the murder of garrett. >> it's a 34 in the family of a woman who was pushed to her death in front of a bart train at a station last year is suing bar now accusing the agency of failing to protect the public last year. 74 year-old corazon dan dan was pushed in front of a moving bart train and she ended up dying of her injuries. a person has been arrested and charged in her death. bandit dan downs, a family is now going after bart saying that bart failed to do their job of protecting passengers. >> there's a lot of people out there. >> cool. >> it's just circling that train station. i know because

the moment that that happened to my on i went to that station myself and there's about a dozen, you know, people in there who i didn't feel safe, just we're going to that station. what more a female at, you know, 11, 11, 30. >> according to court documents, trevor belmont, the man accused of pushing her, had already been banned from bart and arrested 27 times. >> take a look at this video of a burglary. you can see people with masks going into this home in pleasanton. they broke in through a rear sliding door last week and within 10 minutes they were able to leave with a whole bunch of stolen things before the police even arrived. they were seen leaving the area in a light colored land rover with a stolen license plate. >> well, yesterday morning we first told you about ice agents that are now able to arrest migrants at places like schools and churches. the department of homeland

security says that under their new policy, quote, criminals will no longer be able to hide in america's schools and churches to avoid arrest and quote, now prior to this reversal, officers were usually required to get approval for any enforcement operations at schools or churches except in cases like national security. well, now the the move that we just talked about is causing many bay area residents to be pretty afraid of possible deportation and even avoid leaving their homes altogether. so yesterday, a community resource center in san francisco is mission district saw less attendees than usual at its food pantry event. many of those who did show up expressed their concerns now about possible crackdowns. >> taking going go to church a lot. so, you know, with the new suppose the changes that that the rays can happen in fearful, i don't know. should i go should not go. i go there earlier and then my my son goes later. but right now we've decided that we're going

to go together. >> eliminate my major completely just doesn't seem like the university of there's no sports. >> did not think about happened whatsoever. >> all sports is out at sonoma state university. major cuts to close a multi million dollar budget deficit, including the elimination of the entire division. 2 athletics department and multiple academic departments as well. the university announced this on wednesday on day 2 of the spring semester. 46 faculty members will not have their contracts renewed next year, weich includes tenured positions more than 20 degree programs are also being cut. student athletes will remain eligible to receive their scholarships as long as they meet current terms of the scholarship. a woman soccer player tells kron 4. a lot of students right now whether planning to leave. >> we all had like offers everywhere else and chose here for soccer. and so now it just makes us all want to leave. like i know a lot of athletes

are in the same boat like they came here for the score. and now they're going to leave. so they're going to lose even more students. so. >> the university is also citing a 38% drop in enrollment since 2015, there will be a campus community town hall on january 30th, where people can learn more and ask questions. >> it's a 30 and the fires in southern california are now forcing the american red cross to cancel hundreds of blood drive on wednesday. the fremont fire department helped out by partnering with the nonprofit and opening its doors to donors is it's just a time when they need donors and they can to the blood drive so conference late. it all has more on how we're helping. >> the fremont fire department put out a public call for help. the community responding by showing up dropping in arm and donating blood. i've been donating blood for years. totally worth it. >> yeah, worth whatever i had to do this today. fremont fire chiefs rated e asaamong the donors. she says her department partnered with the american red cross to host a

blood drive at its administration building wednesday because the nonprofit is in desperate need been unable to collect donations in la because of the fires and the and the winter. >> storms resulted in 500 cancel blood drives nationally. and collectively we've missed out on 12,000 units of blood collected. the red cross says donors of all types, particularly type o negative blood donors and those giving platelets are essential to saving lives. this month. i signed up for this before the fires, but >> still, if regardless of where it helps, it where chief diaz says 14 of her crew members have helped fight. the la fires are making a contribution not only to people who need it such as folks who have sickle disease. >> there's a shortage in plasma and platelets. so we're really excited to be able to make a contribution in this way, a contribution that will go a long in fremont. philippe

increased faster than wages and that's across all income levels. even the median income, which is gone up, nearly 75% in the last 10 years. can't keep pace with the cost of housing because the price of a two-bedroom apartment went up 90% in that same period. so you're basically affording less of an apartment now than did 10 years ago. based on the national low income housing coalitions, 2024 out of reach report. household needs to make at least $125,000 a year in order to afford that 2 bedroom apartment. experts are calling on cities like san jose to maybe increase the city's minimum wage and change zoning laws to allow for more affordable housing. >> and the east bay, the city of san leandro is helping small businesses by offering grants. that's part of the small business security assistance program that they say have helped. 25 businesses last year launched their businesses. what she'd do if you're interested, you have to apply for a comprehensive security assessment of your
