plus president trump making his first trip second term. it is about arrive in southern california this afternoon. wildfire devastation. thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 news at 2. i'm justine waldman. a food truck owner was shot, one said point blank range and that person remains in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. >> kron four's philippe djegal reports. the shooting happened outside of a popular mini market in vallejo. >> it said, >> you know, you meet your house now. a food truck owner based in richmond popped up in front of all my a food mart and liquor in vallejo thursday night. and at one point to witness says someone wearing dark clothing up to the truck, parked out front on marine street, exchanged a few words with the man and fired one shot before running toward the

marina. debra lives nearby. here i am. i'm 72 years old. >> i get scared. a witness says the victim's mother was inside the food truck at the time and called 9-1-1 bystanders performed cpr on the victim before police and paramedics arrived. police say he remains hospitalized with injuries, threatening his life in his 7 years. and i thought, you know, this many people as states unless neighbors are concerned about violence citywide less than 2 weeks ago, a 4 year-old girl was critically wounded during a shootout in the crest neighborhood considered a rougher part of town. the marina is seen by locals as more welcoming to visitors. but neighbors say it is changing and they are keeping their heads down other night. i walked up to buy a car. >> s a 3, 4 all in black last 2 of them holding weighs

shooting, but also to discuss some of the challenges that that community is facing. in half moon bay on friday, nonprofits, all us and the national farm worker ministry along with local elected officials. >> held a ceremony to honor those who died in the tragic shootings 2 years ago. >> as we remember their lives, we honor them. we honor the work and what they contributed and continue contribute many ways to this community following the shootings farmworker chunli zhao was arrested and charged with allegedly killing 7 of his co-workers at 2 different farms in half moon bay. >> he has pled not guilty to 7 counts of first-degree murder and is currently in custody awaiting trial in the wake of the shootings. a lot of attention was focused on the poor living conditions that many farmworkers indoor friday ceremony are also concerned that in the months and years ahead, many undocumented immigrants could be forced to leave the country as the trump administration ramps up deportation efforts. >> the rhetoric coming down from the federal level is

pushing those who need the most help into the shadows. people who we rely upon to bring food to our table. >> it is our farmworkers, their labor, their sacrifice, their hard work of then and their families that make america what it is that provides food on our table every day. and finally, the city of half moon bay is currently working on designing and installing a permanent memorial. >> to honor the victims of the shootings. >> all right. back live now is housing criminal trial in this case is expected to start at some point this spring. but for now in half moon bay, charles clifford kron, 4 news. charles, thank you. >> we'll go to southern california where the threat of rain this weekend is raising concerns in the recent burn zones. residents are being urged to prepare for the possibility of mudslides, even flooding. firefighters and the national guard are doing their part to help out the residents. so they feel prepared.

>> we're trying to make sure that anything that might be toxic or any large debris year. fast-moving water gets trapped here for so that the communities downstream from here aren't affected, which would lead to flooding and possibly those committees, which is the last thing they want after a big fire up into the community. >> los angeles is preparing to see rain today. excuse me tomorrow and sunday. and now within the next hour, we know president trump is expected to land in los angeles so he can see the burn zones for himself. will have a live report when that is happening. and we're gonna go now to our meteorologist gil on with the latest on the forecast for los angeles. >> yeah. stark contrast coming out of a red flag warning this morning. now a chance of that rain this weekend. here's our future cast model where also going to get a little bit of that rain as well. so we have the cloud cover today and tonight and this is saturday morning. you could even see some snow in the sierra and more widespread rain across los angeles county here. and most of it appears to be beneficial. but of course,

there is a slight chance, a very small chance of thunderstorms. and as we know, that could really trigger mudslides debris flows and possible flash flooding along the burn scars of those recent fires. and la is expecting some mountain snow as well. so that will be something we're keeping an eye on up to an inch of rain, half an inch tt an inch in los angeles about a quarter to possible have possibly happen inc for us in the bay area, but not a whole lot. we dry out monday for much of the state. we have some more of those offshore winds coming our way here. the protected rain totals just across the state. 2 to 5 inches of snow along the sierra and over in la about more than a quarter of an inch of rain. and, you know, with that chance of that moderate rainfall. hopefully that's not the case. but for us, as you can see, just traces of 10th of an inch san francisco. so bottom line, we could see some unsettled weather this know when i come back, we also have chilly temperatures and breezy conditions in the forecast. i have details in the extended forecast back to justine.

thank you. gallon. just to remind our parent company nexstar is partnering with the red cross to raise money for wildfire victims and you can scan this qr code to help. >> now on to developing news out of san francisco where there are several denials coming out about alleged student encounter with an ice agent on a muni bus today. an ice spokesperson told kron 4 there was no encounter between agent and a san francisco unified student. this was yesterday. this is coming in response to a letter by balboa high school's principal which said a student reported being approached by an ice agent who asked them friday and wanted to know where they were from the letter added that the student was not harmed or detained another with their family. san francisco unified called this encounter an unconfirmed report and added that the district will remain a safe haven for all students, regardless of their citizenship status. muting also telling us here at kron 4, it is not able to confirm this encounter ever took place. supervisor shamann

walton released a statement here for anyone contacted by an ice agent say to stay calm and remain silent, who are not required to answer questions about your immigration status or where you were born. do not open the door without seeing warrant document the incident safely without interfering. ask for a lawyer. if you are to tate. to the peninsula now and a half moon bay nonprofit received a postcard. they say was filled with anti immigrant loss, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting latino immigrants and workers says it received this postcard in the mail on tuesday. it contained a list of the places where the senator says immigrants can be found and reported. it includes schools, churches, restaurants, and other places. it also included a phone number and an online link to report undocumented immigrants to ice. group is saying it's

now going to add extra security measures moving forward. it concerns over this immigration issue not just happening within the latino community, but among members of other groups as well. the asian law caucus joining other immigrant rights organizations this week to sue the trump administration over the executive order aiming to remove birthright citizenship. in a statement, the executive director for the asian law caucus says if you are born here, you are a citizen period. no politician, including president trump can decide who is american and who is not. in the south bay. san jose resident sharing key issues. they want city leaders to improve on this year. according to a recent survey, homelessness is the top priority. mayor matt mahan released the survey results on social media saying, quote, we're listening and taking action to build a stronger, safer. san jose. other top concerns from residents are lack of affordable housing and public safety. and this is coming as sentence. coming as

santa clara county is opening up its largest homeless and shelter. now the reception center can serve 250 people every night. the renovation of the center redoing the rooms, taking the lobby and adding bathrooms. one of the organizers telling us this is beyond improving the shelter's appearance. >> the transformation uphold the dignity and humanity of everyone who walks through its stores. they're able to support individuals and meet them where they're at. we can provide a safe and welcoming space for individuals that are coming in from the cold. >> our center is going to be more clips to really provide that quality service and providing privacy to individuals to meet one-on-one. there's not one answer to solving homelessness, but what i can say is that there is one solution and that means that we're all working together meet the community needs and assist. >> the non-profit that runs the shelter says as more encampments are cleared, more people will seek shelter in

>> today president trump is touring disaster hit communities in north carolina and here in california, he talked about supporting the ongoing recovery efforts but also expressed some major criticism about how the disasters have been dealt with, even throwing out the idea of getting rid of fema. washington, d.c., correspondent hannah brandt joins us live now to explain what this is about. thanks for being here. hi, justine.

area today, which was devastated by recent wildfires. it is a bad, bad situation. and he says california officials are to blame for the widespread damage, accusing them of mismanaging water. you don't have water and the hydrant. you don't have water. the sprinkler system. the governor gavin newsom pushed back calling that damaging misinformation. maybe the president just doesn't know. that there's not a stick. it. that can be turned to solve. >> all the water problems that he alleges exist. but going forward, president trump says he wants the government to handle disasters differently and he's considering getting rid of the federal emergency management agency. fema, fema has been a disaster no matter where they >> president trump says fema is too costly and works too slowly. and he argues that the agency needs to be overhauled or terminated altogether. just seen back to yes, so if he is, >> wants to do this, what is he suggesting instead of fema for disaster recovery?

>> well, he says he would rather see disaster recovery be handled at a state or local level, suggesting that maybe the federal government can just fund the disaster relief efforts through them directly. and he also said that he's considering signing an executive order to significantly reform fema. >> hannah brandt live for us there in dc. thank you so much. state attorney general rob bonta is responding to another executive order signed by president donald trump. this once focused on the lgbtq+ community. his statement reads in part, quote, here in california, the lbgtq plus community is and will continue to be protected under a myriad of state laws and california's constitution. the president cannot eliminate fundamental rights by executive order nor can he order federal agencies to violate the law. but goes on to say that he is committed to defending california's people and values. we're going to take a live look outside right now. looking out here towards the golden gate bridge, kind

of hazy out there at the moment. let's check now with gayle ong the scene. what's going on? sometimes i'm not sure if it's the camera need wipe offer, but actually really looks like that out there. we are cloudy. we have been hazy. you know, we had a lack of winds lately, but >> if you'll notice today were much cooler. we have the clouds out here at over by the east bay hills. let's look at the current readings. notice we're in the 50's now ever 50's and san mateo low 50's along our coastline in pacifica, maybe some upper 60's. but we are cooling down. that's the bottom line. so the next couple of hours, you can expect increasing cloud cover for the early evening down to the 50's and upper 40's will have another chilly night. we'll get to that in a bit. winds are calm for now. but overnight we will see pop and the winds in the north bay mountains once again will be breezy throughout the weekend, anywhere between 20 to 30 miles per hour. winds even 50 in the highest peaks. so breezy this weekend, mainly to the north or in the north bay. there's actually a wind advisory in place starting

tonight through sunday morning. it's a bit of those offshore winds once again. so increasing cloud cover tonight. a little bit of break of break from the clouds in the and the north bay tonight. but now take a look. we could see a chance of some rain, maybe some isolated showers, some very light rain here across the bay area throughout the weekend and we could see some sierra snow to go along with that. certainly look like we dry out towards the end of the weekend. and as for how much rain we're expecting, maybe a 10th of an inch of really depends where you are almost half an nevado from saturday between saturday and sunday and you could see more than a quarter of an inch in concord and livermore. so just depends where you are. and here are the overnight lows. we're chilly once again. there's actually a freeze watch in a frost advisory across the bay area overnight. so low 30's and low 40's once again to sum it all out. you our way. chance of rain this weekend. and in the long term, we could even see another chance of rain later

francisco zoo has this leaping lemur cafe and it's going to close for a little while after a health inspection rodent infestation, authority suspended the facilities permit citing multiple health health code violations. inspectors discovered rodent droppings and recommended immediate pest control measures, including. selling a sealing gaps and trimming vegetation. the restaurant must also sanitize affected areas and remove contaminated food. the closure will remain in place until the issues are fully addressed and the permit is reinstated. the business has 15 days to request a hearing to contest this suspension. >> still ahead here, 2 o'clock today. we have very cute story. beat the 2 little panda cubs now with the washington at a local bookstores ending a chapter in the east bay. the reason why it is now closing and no quiet priorities. san francisco, how this native animal is adopting to

>> now to a big story that we have been following, the mother of the man who's accused of killing alexis, gabe will not be facing any charges. the contra costa county district attorney's office announced this decision yesterday sunday will mark 3 years since cape was first reported missing. and as kron 4 sarah stinson reports the gabe family, he's extremely disappointed. >> it's over for it was a big day and a very big the supporting day for us. >> when gabe feeling defeated after learning the mother of the man accused of killing his

daughter, alexis will not be facing charges. very sad day for it'll be 3 years the sunday since gabe was last seen. the oakley woman was 24 years old when her remains were found in amador county after her family reported her missing in january 2022. gabe's ex-boyfriend, marshall curtis jones was charged with her murder, but he was shot and killed by arresting officers in washington state in june of 2022, the contra costa county district attorneys office was also investigating if jones's mother, alicia coleman, clark helped cover up the murder. the da's office says investigators searched her home and interviewed her boyfriend to see if she paid for her son to fly to washington. and while prosecutors say some information raised suspicion about coleman clark's potential culpability as an accessory after the fact they could not find sufficient evidence to charge her. this despite the gabe family presenting evidence to the da

possible school closures and consolidations. the superintendent says it needs to cut about 8 million dollars from its budget. currently, there are 19 schools serving about 9,000 students. the board will now vote on one of 3 different options will go through them mare island, health and fitness academy will close in vallejo charter school move to the mare island campus under the second option. loma vista, environmental science academy would be converted into a tk through 5th grade school and the 6th through 8th graders with that move to solano. been leadership academy and under the 3rd option, the district would completely close the loma vista mental science academy. ptsa president. there's also saying they shortlist came as a surprise to her and air island have a lot of questions about the possible consolidation. >> i'm not only speaking from my child like that psp parent. you know, i'm the whole community. all the kids. and

what about the teachers, the teachers that they grew up with, but nobody gave us any answers as to staff. we came and faculty even class sizes of you're going to bring in another 30400 your packing the island to school with 700 plus students. like, what are your racial is looking like? >> the options we voted on at the next board meeting, february 19th and whatever is decided but start during the next school year. young people sitting foster care in san jose are being offered new opportunities. a program called my first place is moving 9 of them into transitional housing. kron four's rob nesbitt gives us a closer look at some of their new homes. >> the first 9 people to move into the apartments here at roosevelt park apartment, screw up in foster care. their new apartment is a way to make sure they can stay in the community. they call home the san jose apartment is empty now. but soon it will be fully furnished at a place to call home for someone exit foster care like giselle during who got to move into her apartment

phd in the fall of 2019 and the most interesting things so far has just been the sheer amount of human food. these animals are what are they eating? >> so the number item that i detected that we found in over 70% of those gas samples we collected was chicken and they're not really hunting that many backyard chickens in san francisco. that's a human diane item that they can get from garbage from composting from pet foods and also from intentional >> like chicken wings from safeway, something like that. exactly foods that you think people are feeding them or they're mostly just finding scavenging around. it makes well. >> so obviously we know anything. have garbage winner on the ground that's easily accessible. we put our garbage bins outside on garbage day. animals can get into that. but unfortunately, there's also intentional feeding of coyotes by some people in san francisco. and that's something we really want to discourage because i always learn that it's safe to

approach people if they're associating that with some sort of positive reward like food and i can really contribute to human coyote conflict in the sand is what should they be eating? what would be their natural diet? yeah. so they are still eating a lot of natural die in san francisco to after 2 gunmen, most commonly detected side item was pocket coburn, which i'm sure everyone in the city has seen. we have plenty of an all or parts. they also eat raccoons and skunks and bulls. different bird species docks roth and myself. they're really can really eat anything that they come across. so. >> if i live in san francisco, should i like not be putting my garbage out anymore? like of the code is coming down and eating the trash more than they should be eating the stuff that they're supposed to be getting. >> so really important to make sure that we're not sort of advertising what i call attracted sorties diet item, but coyote like to eat might want we're not making that super easily accessible. so we want to be securing our only

putting our garbage bins out in the morning before garbage truck comes making sure we're not feeding our hats in the backyard. we're picking up fallen fruit from our just anything avoid attracting new animals into our backyards and neighborhoods where we you know, austin, our pets or children walking around. >> for the small pets that are out there, the little dogs, little cats, even like little kids. now, this coyote, these are just becoming so much bolder in coming out you know, going after them, is that because they're just sort of used to living with humans now in the city? >> one thing i really want to that being attacked by a coyote is still extremely, extremely coyotes recall and i san francisco in 2002 and then the entire time they've been back since 22,002 until today. there's only been one eye on human which occurred this summer ash. and so you're just sort of general rest being met
