good afternoon. thanks for being with us today on kron. 4 news at 4. i'm grant lotus. i'm justine waldman, a food truck workers in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. >> after getting shot outside of a popular mini market crowd for super bowl has the latest now from the layout. >> it said. >> you know, you can't meet your house now. a food truck owner based in richmond popped up in front of all my a food mart and liquor in vallejo thursday night. and at one point to witness says someone wearing dark clothing up to the truck, parked out front on marine street, exchanged a few words with the man and fired one shot before running toward the marina. debra lives nearby. here i am. i'm 72 years old. it's. >> i get scared. a witness says the victim's mother was inside the food truck at the time and called 9-1-1 bystanders performed cpr on the victim before police and paramedics arrived. police say he remains hospitalized with

even say anything good especially the young police have not released a motive behind the shooting. so far no arrests have been made in vallejo. philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. >> along the coast today marks 2 years since a mass shooting at half moon bay killed 7 farmworkers today. neighbors are remembering those who died and raising awareness about the living conditions of farm workers. kron 4 charles clifford has the details. >> well, here in half moon bay, it has been 2 years since that tragic shooting on friday. neighbors and local officials came together to discuss the tragedy and also talk about some of the challenges that the undocumented immigrant farmworker community is facing. in half moon bay on friday, nonprofits, all us and the national farm worker ministry along with local elected officials. >> held a ceremony to honor those who died in the tragic shootings 2 years ago. >> as we remember their lives, we honor them. we honor the work and what they contributed and continue contribute many

ways to this community following the shootings farmworker chunli zhao was arrested and charged with allegedly killing 7 of his co-workers at 2 different farms in half moon bay. >> he has pled not guilty to 7 counts of first-degree murder and is currently in custody awaiting trial in the wake of the shootings. a lot of attention was focused on the poor living conditions that many farmworkers indoor friday ceremony are also concerned that in the months and years ahead, many undocumented immigrants could be forced to leave the country as the trump administration ramps up deportation efforts. >> the rhetoric coming down from the federal level pushing those who need the most help into the shadows. people who we rely upon to bring food to our table. >> it is our farmworkers, their labor, their sacrifice, their hard work of then and their families that make america what it is that provides food on our table every day. and finally, the city of half moon bay is currently working on designing and installing a permanent

memorial. >> to honor the victims of the shootings in half moon bay, charles clifford kron. 4 news. >> let's talk weather as we get a live look at sfo. >> we're going to check in now with our meteorologist gil on for details on what's happening outside right now. >> yeah, i've notice we're cloudy today. we're cooling down that condition today. we're going to see a change in our weather pattern, especially this weekend. you see the clouds over by the east bay hills. let's take a look at the current readings were in the 50's today. upper 50's. >> in mountain view oaklyn and some low 60's out there. remember, we are in the 70's yesterday. so you'll notice that change this weekend because not only are we expecting cooler temperatures, also a chance of rain and some breezy conditions, but just heading out the door on this friday evening. you'll notice some cloud cover and some upper 40's and 50's this evening. but when i come back, we'll be talking about the rain on the way and also a little bit of the rain that will help southern california, not too much rain because as we know what those recent

wildfires them a chance of too much rain could trigger mudslides. so that is a concern down there. and we also have sierra snow. so a lot of changes this weekend in the weather department. back to you. >> thank you, gayle. now to this developing story, a spokesperson for the u.s. immigration and customs enforcement agency tells u.s. yesterday's alleged encounter between an ice agent and a san francisco unified student did not happen. this is in response to a letter by balboa high school's principal that said a student reported being approached by an ice agent yesterday who asked them for id asked where they're from. the school district did call the encounter an unconfirmed report and added the district will remain a safe haven for all students. regardless of citizenship status. san francisco's mayor daniel lurie also responded, immigration concerns. he said the topic is part of an ongoing discussion. >> we're reaching out to community leaders were talking to people were gathering information in yesterday's

rumors. it's just it. we understand people are fearful. and so we we are in contact right now with community leaders and we will continue to communicate with the public. >> kron four's lezla gooden is looking into this story. she'll have more details coming up tonight on kron. 4 news at 5 and supervisor shamann walton following statement for anybody contacted by an ice agent. he says the stay calm, remain silent says you're not required answer questions about your immigration status or where you were born. recommends people not opening the door without seeing a warrant. they also want people to document these incidents safely without interfering and they say, too, ask for a lawyer if you are, in fact, it ain't. >> half moon bay nonprofit received a postcard that was filled with anti immigrant rhetoric loss. this nonprofit dedicated to supporting latino

immigrants and workers says it received this postcard in the mail tuesday. it contained a list of places where the center says immigrants can be found and reported. it includes schools, churches, restaurants, and other places. also included a phone number and an online link to report undocumented immigrants to ice. the non-profit says it now will be adding extra security measures moving forward. >> concerns over the immigration issue or not just within the latino community, the asian law caucus joined other immigrant rights organizations this week to sue the trump administration over the executive order to remove birthright citizenship. in a statement, the executive director for the asian law caucus said, quote, if you're born here, your citizen period, no politician, including president trump can decide who is american and who is not. >> and pulitzer prize winning cartoonist who was recently arrested for allegedly possessing child is now out of custody with a gps monitor.

derrick bell is being held on a 1 million dollar. he was being held on a 1 million dollar bail in sacramento, but was granted released by a judge at the same time, prosecutors brought up 3 new allegations against him and are asking that all of his devices be searched and for him to be barred from having any contact with minors. investigators say they found more than 100 videos of child abuse material linked to an account controlled by bell. prosecutors believe thousands more exists and bell is expected to be back in court next month. >> police are looking for property and electronics that they say were stolen from a santa rosa high school. the santa rosa police department released these pictures from piner high school in fulton road. they say they show somebody stealing a handful trailer. multiple science textbooks for ipads and a mac book air officers made an arrest but they say they still

need help finding this stolen goods. anyone with info is asked to contact santa rosa police. >> san jose residents are addressing key issues. they want city leaders to improve on this year. and according to a recent survey, homelessness is a top priority. mayor matt mahan released the survey results on social media saying, quote, we're listening and taking action to build a stronger, safer. san jose. other top concerns from residents are the lack of affordable housing and public safety. >> happy people there. santa clara county's biggest homeless shelter is back open after. getting a facelift of sorts. the upgrades at the baca raw dough reception center include redoing rooms, painting the lobby and adding bathrooms. >> we are able to support individuals and meet them where they're at. we can provide a safe and welcoming space for individuals that are coming in from the cold. our

>> fire crews in los angeles county continue to make progress on containment, even as 2 new wildfires just started this week. the palisades fire has burned over 23,000 acres and has now reached 77% containment. the eaton fire has burned over 14,000 acres. it's now 95% contained and that fast-growing flare up that happened near castaic lake is called the hughes fire has burned over 10,000 acres and it's 14% contained. and then ventura county, the laguna fire has burned about 50 acres forward. progress has been stopped, but there's no containment there. >> today, president trump is touring disaster zones. he started in north carolina months after that state was

hit by hurricane alina. and then he landed in los angeles a little over an hour ago. obviously the wildfires there. governor newsom was on the tarmac, greeted him with a handshake. the 2 spoke to each other and then reporters. >> the president here to also expressed some concerns about how disasters have been dealt with across the country. our washington, d.c., correspondent hannah brandt joins us now live to explain. thanks for being here. hi, justine and grant. >> like you mentioned, president trump is now on the ground in california touring some of that damage and the moment that he met, governor newsom on the tarmac was really interesting because he has previously blamed california officials for the damages caused by the fire, but the to pledge to work together on recovery efforts in california, though, as you mentioned, president trump is very critical of federal recovery efforts in general. in western north carolina. help us help get our community

back. families described losing everything to hurricane helene on. it's just heartbreaking as president donald trump listens and pledged federal help. you are not. >> forgotten any longer. you were treated very badly by the previous administration throwing jabs of the biden administration. the president told them his team will step up to deliver faster fixes like better long-term housing solutions and more access to clean water. we're going to get you the resources you need and the support that you deserve. and will be a new side through every step of the rebuilding. and he said he planned to sign an executive order to speed up rebuilding of roads to go through a permitting process that's called know, permitting, just get it done. president trump is also visiting los angeles area today, which was devastated by recent wildfires. it is a bad, bad situation. and he says california officials are to blame for the widespread damage, accusing them of mismanaging water. you dot't have water and the hydrant. you don't have water. the sprinkler system. the governor gavin newsom pushed back

calling that damaging misinformation. maybe the president just doesn't know. that there's not a stick. it. that can be turned to solve. >> all the water problems that he alleges exist. but going forward, president trump says he wants the government to handle disasters differently and he's considering getting rid of the federal emergency management agency. fema, fema has been a disaster no matter where they >> president trump says fema is too costly and works too slowly and he argues the agency needs to be overhauled or terminated altogether. >> live in washington, i'm hannah brandt. so hannah, what is the president suggesting instead of fema for disaster recovery? >> well, he said he'd rather see recovery efforts be led by state and local governments and suggested that the federal government could give funding for these relief efforts directly to the localities. >> he also mentioned that he plans to sign an executive order doing a major reform at fema.

>> alright, lot figure out there. still had a brett. thanks for the update. state attorney general rob bonta is responding to president trump's executive order that declares there are only male and females and the people cannot transition from one gender to another or be considered non-binary. but this is in part, quote, here in california, the lgbtq+ community is and will continue to be protected under a myriad of state laws in california's constitution. the president cannot eliminate fundamental rights by executive order nor can the order federal agencies to violate the law. bonta goes on to say he's committed to defending california's values. in southern california. the threat of rain this weekend is raising some mudslide and flooding concerns in the recent bird. sounds. >> firefighters and the national guard are doing their part to help people prepared. >> we're trying to make sure that anything that might be toxic or any large debris year. fast-moving water gets

trapped here for so that the communities downstream from here aren't affected, which would lead to flooding and possibly those committees, which is the last thing they want after a big fire up into the community. >> los angeles is preparing to see rain over the weekend. and our meteorologist gayle ong joins us now with the latert forecast for la. >> it, you know, it looks to a beneficial rain, but there is slight chance of some thunderstorms and >> as we know, excessive rain over the burn scars could trigger mudslides, debris flow. so we're hoping for the best here. that area low pressure sliding in here is going also bring us some cold temperatures and windy conditions. so let's play played up for you on the future cast model. we noticed the increasing cloud cover today that transition day today and over the weekend. and that's when we can see that chance of rain for the bay area. sierra snow and rain for los angeles. as you can see, more widespread sunday. so here is what we're expecting. maybe about a quarter of an inch or more los angeles area with the potential of moderate rainfall. so that is what

they're concerned about. so it you definitely want to be prepared to. that's why we're seeing a lot of stories about that in southern california over in the fear about 2 to 5 inches of snow expected this weekend and for the bay area. maybe about a 10th of an inch depends where you are nevado can see almost half an inch between saturday and sunday. so just depends where you are. you. so it just unsettled weather this weekend. we also have the winds. now the winds are light now in the overnight, but early tomorrow morning right after midnight that we see a pop in the winds in the north bay mountains and they'll be breezy throughout the weekend here there is a wind advisory posted tonight through sunday. so windy in the mountains and cold in the valleys. we have a frost advisory overnight. once again, this is going to upgrade to a freeze. watch till tuesday. so another long stretch of chilly temperatures. these are tonight's lows, 30's and 40's across the board. and here's that 7 day outlook. we cool down for the weekend. daytime highs to the 50's and know we'll see those windy conditions at chance of light

but plans are in works to turn the decades old shopping center into a biotech office space. this comes after the mall was sold to a new developer about 3 years ago. people will still be able to shop at the 7 other jc penney locations in the bay. >> more road. no parking curbs are popping up around san francisco, leaving some residents confused this red a curb on 18th avenue near balboa street is among several illegally sprinted spray painted. near crosswalks. the sfmta says it's working to repay the curb and that others have also been tampered with. and this is coming after california announced this new daylighting law requiring people to park at least 20 feet away from crosswalks and sometimes even further away if the curb is painted red officials say these fake herbs are causing some confusion about the new law. so anyone who notices something suspicious about the sign or the curb markings should call

county's district attorney's office made that decision. they announced it last night. this sunday will mark 3 years since cape was reported missing is kron 4 sarah stinson reports. >> the gabe family is extremely disappointed. >> it's over for there was a big day and very big the supporting day for us. >> when gabe feeling defeated after learning the mother of the man accused of killing his daughter, alexis will not be facing charges. very sad day for it will be 3 years the sunday since gabe was last seen. the oakley woman was 24 years old when her remains were found in amador county after her family reported her missing in january 2022. gabe's ex-boyfriend, marshall curtis jones was charged with her murder, but he was shot and killed by arresting officers in washington state in june of 2022, the contra costa county district attorneys office was also investigating if jones's mother, alicia coleman, clark

helped cover up the murder. the da's office says investigators searched her home and interviewed her boyfriend to see if she paid for her son to fly to washington. and while prosecutors say some information raised suspicion about coleman clark's potential culpability as an accessory after the fact they could not find sufficient evidence to charge her. this despite the gabe family presenting evidence to the da last month, there's just a mountain of small pieces of evidence. that's one of the attorneys for the game family. dara cashman. i fundamentally disagree. >> with the da's decision, presented the evidence in a manner that i thought was compelling to them. so what she did in my mind is unconscionable and he's clearly. >> not lawful were confused to why. >> think it's still not in doubt. that's what really infuriates me. no da diana becton released a statement saying in part.

>> in san francisco, authorities are investigating a deadly 7 car crash that happened sunday night in soma. police have arrested the 66 year-old driver. they've charged him with vehicular manslaughter. and reckless driving. the crash involved allegedly a speeding tesla and a waymo and it killed the 27 year-old and also a dog along with hurting to others. and we spoke with city leaders who are saying now they're moving forward with plans to install speed cameras and pedestrian safety measures to prevent future accidents. it's unclear when the cameras will be installed but city officials say they will work too ensure

the safety of the community. >> woakes sinks. the oldest independent bookstore company in the bay area is closing its berkeley location. the company said its part of bankruptcy restructuring for loyal customers, though the news is bittersweet. kron four's dan thorn reports. >> turning of every page books. has been welcoming readers of all ages to its store in berkeley for the past 10 years for neighbors like rachel lefkowitz, the bookstore has always been a part of her walk around town. come here all the time. find some of my favorite authors that i don't find anywhere else. people are always incredibly helpful. something i've been meaning to read for years but never got into treasure hunt, unfortunately, will come to an end in february books. is closing relocation. >> after filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy, we're very to see them. i go out of business. john wynette in his dog stopped by the store thursday afternoon. >> and delivered a card to

employees. he says the store has been special spot for both him and his little our dog loves to come visit here. >> the staff are wonderful now is give them a tree and he drags us here. we're also booked. file. so enjoy coming here for that. >> as well, the company is offering its berkeley employees to transfer to other bay area locations. but for sarah bacon, the store's last day also be her couple of us, including myself, have declined those offers just because of community issues or other things. we're optimistic for the future. >> bacon says she started working at the berkeley story at the end of 2023. and it's been a fantastic ride despite the downturn, inc and foot traffic. the people that do come in here and shop here >> are very, very loyal. they are very enthusiastic about how much they love us and how much they and, you know, value

hazy out there. looking out toward the bridge can see the golden gate bridge. the onshore breeze kicking back bring this moisture in the atmosphere and mid to high level clouds rolling on into. and that's kind of what we're dealing with for tonight. and it's tomorrow morning, although it's gonna be really cold. again, temperatures out the door. you probably noticed that as well. they started getting knocked down a bit. still some 15 60's around the bay area right now. but it weren't for another cold night around the bay area, expecting some freezing conditions, some of the interior valleys, in fact, a cold weather watch been issued here in the bay area's. we've got a freeze likely to develop and some of the interior valleys. so be prepared for that. watch house plants outside, of course, get ready, get an extra blanket on the bed. these temperatures going to be very cold in spots. now this work. it's interesting. we've got low pressure spinning off the coastline. we've been hardly seeing any clouds and all across the state of california for almost the entire month of january. and fact, usually almost 5 inches of rain in san francisco for the month. we've seen about 1800's and that is all so things about to change is a chance we could see a few

more scattered showers moving our way. and as that happens, well, things get interesting, i think is we're going to see that cold air sliding on through much colder temperatures rolling in the bay area. the winds we'll likely get gusty time to specially over the north bay mountains expected 40, maybe some 50 mile an hour gusts there. and that's going to be chilly all around. in fact, expecting that storm system kind of rotate through bringing a chance of rain, not only here, but southern california, and there may be more storms lined up after that. we'll have more on that coming up in a few minutes. >> definitely unsettling that what you're telling and the family saying that we're going to have transparency would have one more meeting. those going to be a conversation and it definitely did. it's not the definition of transparency. >> the vallejo ptsa board president frustrated here with the school district just days after a community town hall people, a host city unified school district, has now narrowed its choices for possible school closures and consolidations the superintendent says it needs to cut about 8 million dollars

from its budget. currently, there are 19 schools serving about 9,000 students. the board will now vote on 3 different options. one of them will go through the 3 here, mare island, health and fitness academy will close and vallejo charter school will move to the mare island campus under the second option. loma visted byron mental science academy would be converted into a tk through grade school and the 6th through 8th graders with that move to solano. wideman leadership academy. under the 3rd option, the district would completely close the limit. this to environmental science academy and the ptsa president says that the shortlist came as a surprise to her and many families have questions regarding the possible consolidations enclosures. >> i'm not only speaking for my child like that psp parent. you know, i'm rooting for the whole community. all the kids. and what about the teachers, the teachers that they grew up with, but nobody gave us any answers as to staff and
