>> family traumatized by the palisades fire showing their gratitude to san francisco. firefighters after firefighters save their home. thank you for joining us here on kron for news at 5. i'm justine waltman and i'm grant lotus. our top story tonight, remembering. >> the 7 lives lost 2 years ago and half moon bay, a candlelight vigil is scheduled to begin in about an hour. organizers say the goal is to remember the victims beyond their names. >> as we remember their lives, we honor them. we honor the work and what they contributed and continue contribute many ways to this community. >> farmworker shanley shout was arrested and charged with killing 7 of his co-workers at 2 different farms. he's pleaded not guilty and is currently in custody awaiting

trial after the shootings. a lot of attention was focused on the poor living conditions. many farm workers endured and people at today's ceremony expressed concern that in the months and years ahead, many undocumented immigrants could be forced to leave the country as the trump administration ramps up deportation efforts. >> the rhetoric coming down from the federal level. >> he's pushing those who need the most help into the shadows. >> people who we rely upon to bring food to our table. >> it is our farmworkers, their labor, their sacrifice, their hard work of them and their families that make america what it is that provides food on our table every day. >> your there from the founder and executive director of lhasa. nonprofit dedicated to supporting latinos. they feel the need to add extra security moving forward after receiving a postcard in the mail filled with anti-immigrant rhetoric.

it had a list of places where the center says immigran s can be found and reported. that includes schools, churches, restaurants. there is also info on the postcard about how to report undocumented immigrants to ice. but a law says they feel supported by their political leaders during this time. >> on the contrary, we're standing strong. we're very blessed in this county and in this community to have folks believe in our immigrant community. and that's what's driving our hope. our sheriff's office also contacted they're here to support, you know, whatever they need. >> they're also heightened fears within immigrant communities in san francisco after a recent report of ice on a muni bus city officials have since boats that report. but as kron four's lezla gooden reports. >> it's not using panic in the immigrant community. that's right. there is growing concern right now about ice agents being in and around the bay area on thursday, an official with the san

francisco. >> unified school district sent out a letter to parents saying a student was approached by an ice agent on the 29 muni bus and that the agent asked for their id and where they were from now, according to san francisco's mayor who i spoke with directly that did not occur. now today i was able to catch up with the mayor. >> at a san francisco fire station. and he did share that this incident excuse me that this incident and president trump's promise on mass deportation has many residents living in fear. and i asked him directly about this and this is how he responded. >> and the question, sorry, sorry. we got many want to know about the muni, concerned that we're close out a statement that it wasn't fair. fresno, i'm sorry say it, make sure that you guys i got it. but we got around. mayor, do you have anything to say? a lot of people are very scared right now. they would like to hear directly. really appreciate now make sure that you have are that the state and the people want to hear directly from you. this care.

very scared were reaching out to community leaders were talking to the people were gathering information. yesterday's rumors. >> it's just it. we understand people are fearful. and so we we are in contact right now with community leaders and we will continue to communicate with the public. >> we also reached out to ice about this encounter and they told us in a statement that they were not involved in a reported incident. and coming up at 6, we're going to learn how local immigration leaders are reacting to this alleged incident and what to do if residents do encounter ice. agents reporting in the newsroom was going kron. 4 news. >> let's let thank you. there are fears of deportation that are not just happening within the latino community, but also within the asian community with concerns of ice agents asking them about their citizenship status so far. >> neighbors and i and other asians, we are saying least we're in the san francisco bay area where we're somewhat protected. so we feel safe

here. but unfortunately, for our friends and family there outside. california. yeah, our house are open for them. >> a study found that one in 4 residents in the bay area are asian. cruz and san diego county are trying to get a hold of a fast-moving fire near the border at this fire has jumped to more than 4,000 acres with 10% containment. no structures are believed to be threatened at this time. meanwhile, firefighters are continuing to make progress on that hughes fire, which started this week just north of >> santa clarita, the fire began late wednesday afternoon and it has burned more than 10,000 acres. containment is up to 56%. no homes have been lost. but evacuation orders for castaic lake charlie canyon and bitter canyon remain in place and the threat of rain this weekend is raising concerns in the recent burn zones. >> residents are being urged to prepare for the possibility of mudslides or flooding.

>> we're trying to make sure that anything that might be toxic or any large debris year. fast-moving water gets trapped here for so that the communities downstream from here are affected which would lead to flooding and possibly those cormittees, which is the last thing they want after a big fire up into the community. >> all right. we'll go now to kron four's chief meteorologist lawrence karnow who's tracking the forecast in la. yeah. fire now. some snow, some ice and rain. maybe some mudslides. a lot going on in southern california right now. the good news is those winds backed off. the santa ana winds have gone. now you see more of a seabreeze begin to kick in. that means the humidity is going to start to rise and that's going to slow down the progress of some of these fires. but well, you don't really help of some of that rain. you just don't want too much. see the areas shaded in green. yeah. worried about the possibility of some flooding. those a flood watch is up until monday, expecting some rainfall, not all that heavy, although there could be some isolated thunderstorms embedded in this system as it rolls on by. and of course, if you get a thunderstorm all

around any of those areas that could actually get things going very rapidly. as far as the rain coming down extremely hard for a short amount of time. and that could cause some mudslides, maybe even some debris flows on the coastline toward malveaux. you've got the palisades fire, of course, concerns there with the possibility some flooding there along that area. there are some bigger changes on the way for us to locally. we'll talk about the u.s. with a chance of some rain coming our way in a few minutes. sounds good. thank you, lawrence. also still ahead, initiative. >> to save people money, charging their electric cars. how some people can earn cash. well going green and a food truck worker allegedly shot at while on the job. the latest on this investigation in white house and then target is the latest company to but boss, sean, its diversity goals after that executive order from the white house to eliminate dei programs.

>> target is the biggest company to announce it is rolling back diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives following president trump's executive order. the retailer stated that will be ending a program that was established to help black employees. >> build meaningful careers target last include dei goals. the company had previously set several other major corporations like meta, mcdonald's, walmart, even forward have retreated from similar programs feeling fearing legal risks despite major brands scaling back yesterday, costco announced it will not be following suit. the company is rejecting a shareholder proposal that calls for a review of the

business risks of the dei policies that they possibly pose. >> state attorney general rob bonta is responding to president trump's executive order that declares there are only male and female sexes and rejects that people can transition from one gender to another or be considered non binary. >> california doj has your back. we support you have rights. you have protections to lgbtq+ community has state rights and state protections, federal rights and federal protections to trump's order while certainly concerning. i can't change those right and those protections that you have and i will make sure to do everything in my power to protect your to defend your proteltions. >> president trump has signed the executive order but much of it requires more federal action. attorney general bonta says california's department of justice will be ready to go to court if and when the law was broken. thousands took to the streets of dc for the annual march for life. >> our washington correspondent basil john

brings us the details from the capitol. >> people from all across the country marched in washington, d.c., friday to make their voices heard in stand against abortion rights. this year, president donald trump shared a video message and told everyone his goal during his second term in office we will again stand proudly for families and for alive. but ask our movement is to protect innocent life. >> it's defend the unborn and it's also to be pro family. >> and pro life in the fullest sense of that word possible. vice president jd vance was in attendance and reiterated the message during the 52nd anti-abortion march for over. >> half century. this march as united tens of thousands of americans from all walks of life >> to rally for the cause of life, it's been 2 years since the supreme court struck down roe v wade. the those in

right now all around the bay area. we started to see really the clouds begin to move in today. give me a sign that things are going to start. switch gears. we get in the weekend. beautiful sight out there. look at all the colors looking from the east bay hills out toward the coastline. some high clouds up above, watching that as we head through the night tonight. but yeah, the numbers around the bay not bad. still there. a little bit cooler outside today compared to just yesterday. still 60 degrees right now. pleasant evening in san jose. that's 56 cooling off a little more. 55 in san francisco. 58 in oakland and 59 degrees in santa rosa. speaking of cool, it's going to cold overnight. freeze watch has been posted up across the north bay and the east bay frost advisories to go along with that. that's going to be a chilly night around the bay area. some cold air beginning to make its way in across our skies. then by tomorrow, maybe start to talk about the possibility of at least a couple of scattered showers not to be a rain out around the bay area. temperatures for overnight lows tonight down about 33 degrees downtown santa rose. that means some of the hour spots around santa rosa likely to see some temperatures down

to about freezing. 35 degrees and live more about 38 in fremont. 42 in mountain view and about 40 in hayward. so cold all around as we start out your morning, that's kind of way it's played out right now. things are changing low pressure spinning off the coastline just to the north. we've got a more substantial area of low pressure that's coming down. that's bringing with it. some very little moisture. but some cold air. it's going to be that system that's going to wrap around some of this moisture bringing with least a chance of some scattered showers as we head in toward tomorrow and even a better chance of rain for southern california. lot of clouds moving in up above right now. if you are headed out the door this evening plan on some chilly temperatures, those numbers dropping off into the 40's and 50's o'clock this evening, then get really cold by early tomorrow morning. but the best change of all seeing a chance of showers for the weekend. not going to be a lot of mean if we see a scattered showers, consider yourself lucky. but it kind of open up the pattern looks like by next weekend we're talking about more progressive pattern, maybe some above normal rainfall in february. that be great? he wouldn't even put any money on this weekend's it's going to be so scattered. yeah. it's

hard to say like, hey, yeah, it's gonna rain as temperatures go but it may not rain in daly city. something like that. that's what it's going to play out. consider yourself lucky. then if you get there we go. all right. >> san jose residents are addressing key issues. they want city leaders to improve on this year. according to a recent survey, homelessness is the top priority. mayor matt mahan released the survey results on social media saying, quote, we're listening and taking action to build a stronger, safer. san jose. the other top concerns from residents are the lack of affordable housing and public safety. this is coming as santa clara county's largest homeless shelter is now back open. carter reception center can serve 250 people every night. the renovation of the center included redoing the rooms, repainting the lobby, also adding more bathrooms. one of the organizer says this goes beyond just improving the shelter's appearance. this transformation upholds the dignity and humanity of everyone who walks through our

doors were able to support individuals and meet them where they're at. we can provide a safe and welcoming space for individuals that are coming in from the cold. >> our center is going to be more clips to really provide that quality service and providing privacy to individuals to meet one-on-one. there's not one answer to solving homelessness, but what i can say is that there is one solution and that means that we're all working together meet the community needs assist. >> profit that runs the center says as more encampments are cleared, more people will start to seek shelter in the coming months. they say this is why it's important to create welcoming spaces that offer shelter. >> the san francisco zoo's leaping lemur cafe is closed for now after a health inspection found a rodent problem. inspectors say they found rodent droppings and recommended immediate pest control measures, including sealing gaps and trimming vegetation. the restaurant must also sanitize affected areas and remove contaminated food. the cafe will stay

closed until those issues are fully addressed in the permit is reinstated. the business has 15 days to request a hearing to contest the suspension. the last remaining jc penney location on the peninsula, shutting down for good jc penney in san bruno's, 10 friend ball is permanently closing in. may spokesperson for the store did not say exactly why the company made the decision, but plans are in the works to turn that decade's old shopping center into a biotech office space. this comes after the mall was sold to a new developer about 3 years ago. residents will still be able to shop at the 7 other locations that the store has. the company has across the bay area. >> pg e is offering bay area residents a new way to save on ev charging costs. residents in santa clara contra costa and alameda who have an ev charge and do it at home can enroll in a new program called ev charge manager. let's the participants know when to plug in when the grid demand is low

it's centered around his experience playing little league baseball in the city cc attended vallejo high was drafted straight out of high school by cleveland in 1998. he pitched in the majors from 2001 to 2019 awesome career won a cy young award and a world series title made 6 all-star games. should be a cool movie. excited to see it. no word yet on a release date. >> the humane society of silicon valley reached a major milestone with the program that provides free pet food to homebound owners. volunteers were able to deliver 1 million meals as of today, the special delivery was at a supportive housing site in san jose help feed multiple dogs whose owners are experiencing homelessness workers with this nonprofit say the program is crucial for unhoused residents who depend on companionship from their 4 legged friends. we definitely have one resident where we notice that their rent paid and it was

>> tonight at 5.30, a food truck owner shot once at point blank range remains in the hospital with life-threatening injuries try to work for sleep. to call reports the shooting happened outside a popular mini market in vallejo. >> alone gunshot slipped past most years. niro my of food, mart and liquor in vallejo thursday night. >> it took just seconds for a verbal encounter in the parking lot to turn violent when the suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire at a truck owner is always bad somebody gets ways the victim hosted a pop-up selling chicken wings outside the store on race street coming into town from his home base in richmond. a witness says someone wearing dark clothing walked up to the truck, parked out front, exchanged words with a man and fired one shot.
