clashed with the mayor karen bass during his visit to los angeles today. the president calling los angeles mayor's timeline for wildfire relief to slow demanding she wave permitting requirements so people can start rebuilding immediately. mayor bass said residents should be able to return to their homes within the week. but keeping people safe from hazardous materials is her top priority. we will have a full report on the president's meeting with local and state leaders coming up tonight at 10, 30. as for those deadly wildfires, both the palisades and eaton fires are nearing full containment tonight. the palisades fire is now 79% contained and has burned nearly 23,500 acres in the pacific palisades area. meantime, the eaton fire is 95% contained. it has burned just over 14,000 acres. crews have gained a lot of ground in the hughes fire tonight. >> burning in castaic north of santa clarita. that's now at

79%. containment up from 54% from just a few hours ago. that fire has burned about 10,000 acres. evacuation orders have also since been lifted while rain is needed for the very dry region, it could present some new dangers for areas that have already been left scorched. let's check in now with our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow for the latest on the conditions in the la area. all the talk of the fires and the wind. now we're talking about rain, even some snow. >> across the mountain tops there in the los angeles area right now. the best news they can get. the santa ana winds have backed off and we're seeing more of a seabreeze and more of a gentle wind kicking in. so that's really helped firefighters throughout the day today as those winds have calmed down. now we are expecting the chance of some rain to begin to move in. so there are some spots we're watching very closely. some of those burn areas. we could see some rain falling only expecting about a 3rd, maybe a half an inch. so not a whole lot of rain. the concern is that we might see some thunderstorms develop inside some of these storms as they

rotate through. if you get a heavy downpour with a thunderstorm that could cause some mudslides debris flows that continues along the coastline toward the malibu area. 2 of the fire concern there as well. more rain expected there as well. but the good news is they're going to be getting some rain, something they have see. very little love at all this season. less than two-tenths of an inch of rain for the entire season. finally, more rain coming. in fact, they're going to see more rain from this storm system that will continue on and off through the weekend and monday to than they have for the entire season. guys, back to you. all right, lawrence, thank you. a message of gratitude for san francisco firefighters today. more than 50 crew members have been down in southern california fighting the deadly wildfires as kron four's. rob nesbitt reports a resident from pacific palisades got the chance to say thank you. >> on friday, the firefighters at station. 25 in san francisco. got a thank you from someone whose homes survived the palisades fire because of their hard work. eugene quote, got a tour of the fire station and got the chance to shake the hands of

several firefighters. he lives in pacific palisades where the palisades fire burned more than 23,000 acres. it was really chaotic. everyone was. >> everyone was doing the best and the fire was spreading fast and pass that throughout the day. and by afternoon it was spreading so fast that the entire area had to be after evacuation orders were lifted, he was able to go back to his home. he saw firefighters from station. 25 on scene. >> working to protect his neighborhood. captain jonathan baxter says the san francisco fire department had more than 40 firefighters in southern california when the flames were at their worst. we just it was called the crew change. >> mean that we send fresh firefighters down to relieve the firefighters who ave been there for 10 to 15 days walk says without their efforts, his home by now be standing today. he's still not able to move back in because of smoke and ash damage. so while staying with family in san francisco, you want to stop and show his appreciation with me being evacuated. i spent some time too. >> with my family here and i

with minors. investigators say they found more than 100 videos of child abuse linked to an account controlled by bell. and that thousands of more exist. bell started his career as a cartoon us while attending berkeley and went on to freelance at the san francisco chronicle and oakland tribune. he's expected to be back in court next month. >> new at 10 police have identified a man who was struck and killed while riding his bike in walnut creek. 49 year-old carlos aguilar reyes was bicycling on north main street near ne show valley road when he was hit by a car earlier this week. police say the driver remained at the scene. spokesperson for the city of walnut creek said police do not expect charges to be filed in the case. aguilar reyes leaves behind a wife and 2 children. the gofundme has been set up to help his family with funeral and burial expenses. also new tonight, san francisco transit officials say they're facing a

major budget shortfall and they're calling on the community for help. as mta is inviting the public to a meeting next week to discuss ways to raise funds. this comes as the transit agency says it's staring down a potential 320 million dollar budget gap. officials cited decline in funding and high inflation as reasons for the deficit. the agency has warned of potential cuts to muni and other services its next public decision is on january 27th people can attend in person or online. >> pg e is offering bay area residents a new way to save on ev charging costs. santa clara contra costa and alameda residents who have an ev and charge it at home can enroll in a new program called ev charge manager. it lets participants know to plug in one great demand is low so they can save money if participants use the program for 3 months, they also earned a $75 gift card. the program

chilly in spots. some of these overnight lows again, well down in the 30's. so it's been cold at night. that's for sure. but it's been such a dry january, but i think things are about to turn the corner right now. it looks like we're going to see some changes coming our way. so these clouds you can see i'm rolling through right now with this weak area of low pressure. there's one of the north are really watching. these clouds start to clear out a little bit tonight as those skies clear out these temperatures are really going to plummet as we head toward early tomorrow morning. now, the low that we're watching is actually just a little further to the north. this is coming down from canada. so it's bringing some very cold air that's going to be dropping into the bay area as it moves in. that's going to break up the chance of some showers. and it's also going to get those winds howling across some of the mountain tops 2 in the north. very gusty winds, 40 to 50 mile an hour winds a real possibility. wind advisory posted by the national weather service across the higher peaks in the north bay through not only tonight but right into the weekend, too. so yeah, gusty out there overnight tonight. tomorrow it's going to be a lot cooler. forget those temperatures in the upper 60's. some 70's tomorrow. yeah, you've got

>> cupertino city attorney is leaving. christopher jensen submitted his resignation letter saying his last day will be february 22nd. he did not say why he's leaving only that. he's going back to work as a private attorney in a statement to kron 4, he wrote in part, quote, i'm proud of everything the city has accomplished during my tenure in cupertino, jensen served more than 3 years, 3 and a half years as the city attorney. >> a fuller vertex is blasting the east coast with bone-chilling temperatures and some rare sites for people. some in florida woke up the snow cover in palm trees. the reports of up to 5 to 12 inches. some areas. this extreme weather closed several schools in at least 8 states along with major roads and highways. >> and while some people shovels, snow, as you saw in that video, the sky in covington, georgia, took a bit of a different approach. just see a head says a a flame thrower worked much faster,

temperatures down the 20's 30's even down toward the tampa area. some extremely cold temperatures. we're not done with the snow yet, although it's going to start to make more of a turn toward the north a bit and along the northeast toward the great lakes where you usually see it further get some more stormy weather on the way. but those will be more moderate storms, not snow or ice storms rolling on through temperatures. yep. they're going to be dropping as we head through time, especially to the north. it's going to be chilly in spots there. but it'll start to moderate as we get into next week. in fact, you're back in the 60's in the deep south where they should be still some 30's across much of the northern tier. all right, mark, thank you. >> lunar new year begins next week here in the bay area. san francisco is getting ready to welcome a huge crowd last year. more than a million visitors attended lunar new year events and organizers are hoping for even more people to come this year for the 3rd year in a row, portsmouth square will offer free parking for the first 2 hours during any and all celebrations.

the fires. but this year it's been tie entirely different. things are going switch gears, though, as early as tomorrow. we're going to start dealing with some snow and then maybe some more significant storms as we head toward the end of the month of the right now, you're looking out towards sfo, got some high clouds up above. no delays at sfo. oakland or san jose are all looking good there. checking out your get away forecast for you. and yeah, if you're headed the monterey bay, it's going to be chilly early on even chilly in the afternoon. look at that tempt temperature difference out there. highs only running in the 50's tomorrow afternoon. low 50's in many spots and a slight chance of light shower further south southern california where they got a lot going on. of course, they've had the fires to deal with cold temperatures go along with that to a now. things begin to change. now i have to worry about the chance of some flooding there and some debris flows. but now we're talking about some snow on the mountains. and speaking of that, you have the high country and you're looking at some of that snow up there across the higher peaks. look at the highs tomorrow and the great lake tahoe area, 20's and 30's. and if you are going that direction, make sure that you pack your chains and a
