>> right now at 6, a new traffic installation meant to increase safety in san francisco is actually causing confusion amongst drivers. people who live in the area say it is not working. >> but first, president trump is set to sign another executive order targeting transgender people in the military. >> is at 6 and thanks for joining us on kron. 4 news at 6. i'm vicki liviakis. i'm grant lotus just one week after taking office, president trump is making waves with some of his new policies. >> he's expected to sign an executive order banning transgender people from serving openly in the military. kron 4 stephanie rothman joins us live in the newsroom now with how the transgender community is responding to this. stephanie.

>> graham, president trump says openly allowing transgender people in the military undermines the readiness and unit cohesion advocates say this is the latest example of an administration determined to restrict the rights of the lgbtq+ community. local groups say they're not backing down. >> i saw traumatic things about the way people outed hunted, humiliated. stephanie waite is a transgender woman who served in the marines for 9 years during the 80's and the 90's before she transitioned. >> she says banning a group that already makes up a small minority in the military will only push people back into the closet like she had to do herself. we have a shameful past history in the past that were making progress on. >> and now this administration and its, you know, its supporters want to turn the clock back, at least 50 years on lgbtq, right, that groups of people simply because of what they are is completely

contrary to the core military value. jorge reyes, salinas is with a quality california. >> he says the new requirements in the order that accuse transgender troops of being not physically or mentally capable to serve hurt the country more than help, but they're already thousands of transgender service members currently in the military who have met the standards and more than proven themselves to serve. >> want to protect their country on inauguration day. the president also revoked and executive order that allowed transgender people to serve and prevents the military from discharging soldiers because of their gender identity. >> this new military executive order makes those restrictions. official is executive order comes as pete headset starts his new role as the u.s. defense secretary has previously criticized transgender community as well as women soldiers. he later backtracked on those comments during his confirmation hearing. but wait says he's someone who may have served quite honorably. >> you know, who is clearly not qualified for his job and

talks big game about meritocracy. but, you know, you keys, you know, he has management experience to quit california. and other advocat,s say despite the ongoing attack, they will not stop fighting. >> president trump also recently signed executive order demanding that be defined only by 2 genders, male and female. on federal documents. this includes passports but activists say the community should not lose hope as legal challenges are already underway. back to you. >> all right. thank you, stephanie. president trump not holding back when it comes to enforcing his immigration policies. ice agents have been spotted conducting operations in san jose. the rapid response network is a nonprofit that tracks ice activity. that group says the agents were seen along capitol avenue near alum rock avenue this morning. this is video from yesterday near story road in king road. the nonprofit believes the person was

detained it also believes isis targeting people with existing deportation orders. in a statement, san jose's mayor matt mahan said, quote, i sincerely hope that ice remains focused on enforcement actions related to violent and serious criminals harming our city, not neighbors who are contributing and law-abiding members of our community. added that san jose police do not assist with ice operations. ice agents are not simply carry out. president trump's directives in san jose know kron 4 has confirmed that ice agents were also in san francisco on friday. kron four's dan kerman is here with us live in the studio with that part of the story. dan. well, the janitors union in san francisco confirms ice agents were into san francisco office buildings on friday. they say they were expecting this to happen at some point. >> so their focus has been on preparing their workers, not panicking. and part of that preparation is knowing your rights. >> they came in best regular like they were office workers

when, in fact, they were not. >> well, not identifying which buildings, seiu, local 87 is confirmed. ice agents did appear at to san francisco office buildings on friday and the interactive with their union janitors, but made no arrests. yes, it is alarming. >> but we're not surprised local 87 president olga miranda says employers stood up for the janitors and asked the agents for the proper paperwork. we have bosses that spoke that. >> and if it hadn't been for the due diligence and there solidarity with workers that have been with them for many years. it could have been something different. it could have somebody could have them to walk on every floor. start asking, you know, what country were you born ice officers or any law enforcement officers for that matter can't just come barging into the door without assigned work from the judge. >> immigration attorney nicholas gonzalez with san francisco as la raza community resource center says knowing your rights is critical among

them, the right to remain silent, the right to an attorney and in some cases the right to prevent ice agents from entering. they come knocking at your door asking announcing themselves and say that they want to come in. first thing you can do is say that you won't let them in until you see a sign war. >> are to see the sign were. it's important to note you don't need to open the door. they could slip it into the door and then you can expect that after that, the janitors union agrees knowledge is power. that's why they want to educate their workers and not panic but don't be an economic collapse of folks don't speak up. >> we need business to be a better be become allies. and it's not just because you want your buildings claim. it's because it's the humane thing to do. >> now, the janitors union will appear alongside the mayor and local law enforcement officials at a news conference tomorrow morning to discuss these ice raids and the city's commitment to being a sanctuary city. vickie grant. >> all right. thank you, dan. san francisco state senator scott wiener today also addressed the recent ice

activity in san francisco. >> or city one function without or janitors. the keeper offices cleaned to help our economy run their salt of the earth. they're just trying to work and pay taxes and raise their families. and donald trump is creating a terror campaign to try to scare and terrify these hardworking residents. members of our community and we don't need ice in san francisco. >> on social wiener posted the following. trump says he is only targeting criminals. that is a bald-faced lie. >> in the east bay, richmond city leaders say they are pledging to stand by the city's latino population during the federal immigration policy changes the 2023 census showed the richmond community at about 114,000 people living there, almost half of them identify as hispanic or latino officials say richmond police will not ask about immigration status and they say they're committed to upholding their

sanctuary city policies. >> the bay area is just one of several places around the country that has seen an increase in ice activity. the trump administration says these operations are only going after known criminals. but as our washington correspondent trevor shirley reports tonight. some say it's going beyond that. >> ice officials say this weekend they made more than 1200 arrests nationwide. us in numbers increase the number of arrests nationwide. as we open up the aperture right now, country public safety trez national security threats. but some democrats say the administration's immigration dragnet is catching people. it shouldn't. we're seeing kind of chaos in which. contradiction of the president's commitment that he was going to start focused on violent criminals. >> they're just detaining anyone. border czar tom homan says being in the country illegally is a crime itself. >> regardless of what else, a migrant here illegally has

rain. great guys. get that rain going again. few scattered light showers over the weekend morning. not much show measurable out there, but southern california, fortunately had a lot of rain from that storm system that really help them out. but now we are looking at a whole change in the weather pattern. it is clear it is going to be cold around the bay area overnight tonight. >> and early tomorrow morning. and yes, finally, we may just get back to some rain locally as well out the door right now. those temperatures kind of all over the map. a lot of 50's showed up around the bay area at this time. but it looks like as we head through the night tonight, going to get very cold in spots. in fact, we've got some freeze watches going up in some frost advisories across most of the bay area's. we're going to see some very cold temperatures overnight into early tomorrow morning. the east bay, the north bay, even on the peninsula, some very cold temperatures to the south bay as well. so numbers breaking down. how about 31 below freezing in santa rosa? down to 32 of livermore. a lot of 30's even inside the bay. how about some low 40's along the coastline would be surprised see some places dip in the

upper 30's, even out toward the water's edge. so cold night ahead, a chance of rain on the way. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. >> i'm lauren side to the east bay. now a person is dead after a crash in pleasant hill. it happened about 9.30, this morning at the intersection of taylor boulevard and grayson road. say minivan crash causing one of them to roll over onto its roof. the minivan driver was taken to the hospital with where they later died. the car driver is expected to survive. and no word tonight on what caused this crash. >> the shooting at a weekend sideshow in oakland left somebody dead and 2 others hurt. it happened just after 7.30, last night on east 12th street. police say when they showed up they found evidence of a shooting but no victims soon after officers say 3 people showed up at the hospital who'd been shot. one of them died from their injuries. the 2 other victims are expected to survive. in the north bay. 2 people were arrested and several cars were towed after police broke up a

big sideshow in vallejo. happened a little after midnight. officers teamed up with the chp to break up the sideshow with more than 200 cars in about 300 people. police say one car was set on fire. 2 people were arrested for being involved in the sideshow. 13 people were cited and 4 cars were impounded. the chp says it is going to increase the number of patrols in vallejo on the weekends to try to get a hold of the sideshows. >> still ahead, a north high school forced to close down after a theft over the weekend. a closer look at what of major natural disasters like wildfires be able to sue fossil fuel companies accused of contributing to climate change. one building at the california state capitol aims to allow just that capital tom wallace speak with supporters and opponents.

>> class will not be in session this week at the lake o's wiedemann leadership academy. >> yeah, copper wire was stolen from the school over the weekend and as kron four's philippe reports for us. it's going to cost upwards of $250,000 to fix. >> no school this week. that is what is written on signage at the gates leading into solano. we demand leadership academy in vallejo. classrooms are empty and so were the plain fields as the entire

school was forced to take monday off. thinking at least the week we're hoping it shorter and indoor basketball tournament scheduled saturday was canceled once organizers noticed the electricity was not working. turns out vallejo city unified school district spokesperson selena bag says sometime between friday night and early that morning thieves broke in stole copper wire from the power grid, cutting electricity off for the entire kindergarten through 8th grade campus. the vallejo police department is investigating. these are children. it's just disappointing that that somebody would do this to a school where these kids did nothing didn't it didn't deserve bag. says initial repair quotes range from 150 to $250,000. students took monday off while teachers prepared at the school district's headquarters on mare island for independent learning plans starting tuesday, baggy out says the school district is committed to making the repairs and reopening the school declining

enrollment and money problems have led the district to consider closing or consolidating some campuses. but baghdad house as the leadership academy is not on the chopping block, but could eventually take in students from another campus down the road. yes, we will do their hair stand. we are working really hard and on in a statement, the vallejo city unified school district's superintendent ruben aurelio says, quote. >> we are deeply saddened and frustrated that this has happened again to one of our schools. these incidents disrupt, learning and negatively impact our families and the entire school community. >> in valais home, philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. the vallejo city unified school district has provided an update this evening saying that alternate learning hubs are going to be set up in the district so that students can continue attending class. for more details on these learning hubs, you can visit our website at kron 4 dot com. >> sonoma state university

coaches and students say they are preparing to take legal action against cal state university board of trustees to stop their schools. athletic programs from going away being eliminated. last week the university announced it was slashing the programs because it's facing a 24 million dollar budget deficit. students and staff say the decision to cut the sports programs which would lay off dozens of. faculty as well. and then you're talking about eliminating some academic departments as well. the whole thing they say was a gut punch. they say they're prepared to take immediate action against the cal state university board of trustees. we were all caught off guard. >> i know there's a lot of budget cuts that need to be made. is pretty shocking to find out that they're just eliminating like entire departments. >> university says it's aware of the grievances but has no comment at this time. >> all right. take a good look at your screen there. police in gilroy. they're asking for

your help in finding this person. they say robbed the garlic farm center on travel park circle happened last thursday just before 03:00am police say the man in the maroon hoodie used a gun to steal money from the store. officers say that his hoodie has a dark colored nike swoosh on the chest. black face mask, a red shirt and black sweat pants. they say he was also wearing black and white sneakers. anybody with information is being asked to call gilroy police. >> all right. let's talk weather here as we get a live look at the golden gate bridge. sure, folks are trying to get home on a monday night. and lawrence is here joining us in the studio with an update on the weather yet, guys, looking forward to bringing a little rain back to bay area. would that be nice to see? and i think we may just get it as we head in toward the latter part of the we probably the biggest change we've seen almost all of january, which has been extraordinarily dry, but same another dry day around the bay area, kind of cool in spots and it's going to be downright cold overnight tonight in spots inland. so those

temperatures dropping down low 30's going to be chilly. even in san francisco. probably slow 40's there by the early morning, southern california, seeing the showers just kind of rotate on through right around that area of low pressure moved on by bringing them some much-needed rainfall. they even needed a worse than they've hardly had anything for the season. so this was the most they've seen all season so far. now things beginning to wind down. but we may wind right back up with a chance of rain. you've got low pressure, the south. you've got high pressure off the coastline, but that's not of those big blocking so it's gonna start to get out the way. and then here we go. we get in the middle of the week, started watching those clouds encroach along the coastline. then as we get into friday, here we go. we've got the system begin to roll in. but you notice the trajectory here, the main focus really north of the golden gate bridge. that's where we may see things set up kind of like we had november. remember that we had all that heavy rainfall and a good part of the north bay and they have the flooding issues, not much south of that. so we're watching that is looks like that train of moisture going to stay focused right through friday into saturday north of the golden gate bridge sunday. it does

return. meantime, president trump says that congress needs to act sooner. millions of americans will see a tax increase. our washington correspondent denise him lot explains. >> tax season approaching and many of you are getting your w twos republican members of congress warn your paychecks could be smaller by this time next year. if we do nothing this year, we're going to have 4 and a half trillion dollars of expiring tax cuts, the sweeping tax cuts congress passed in 2017 or due to expire at the end of this year. president trump and senate majority leader john thune made this pledge to take the trump tax cuts and make them permanent. and that's exactly what we're doing at the top. >> other republican agenda is extending that tax relief to help our economy. republicans say those tax cuts through the economy, but the non-partisan congressional budget office predicts extending the tax cuts would add 3.3 trillion dollars to the national debt. >> by 2035, the tax cuts actually generated more revenue. democrats accused

republicans of ignoring the middle class they can provide a massive tax cut. >> to the very rich to give tax breaks for the wealthiest americans before the trump administration took office. the treasury department said the highest earning americans would see the largest benefit from extending the tax cuts. >> for the top 0.1%, an average of $314,000 a year. president trump says he'll likely need votes from democrats to extend the 2017 cuts in washington. i'm today some lot. >> southern california is getting a much-needed dose of rain after all those wildfires that now you see crews are dealing with another issue, mudslides, the latest on cleanup efforts there. plus, president trump signed an executive order to remove the u.s. from the world health organization effect that's already having and lunar new year is just around the corner. what san francisco has in store for the holiday. keep

>> a north bay police department is looking to add drones to help in emergency situations. they're told the santa rosa police chief says those drones could be a game changer and help save lives. can force theresa has more. >> so what i'm looking for ways to use technology to be more efficient in effect that was serving our community. one of those ways that we really been struggling with our priority one response times on monday, santa rosa police chief john cregan saying his department is looking to bring in drones as first responders to emergency situations. >> he says fundamentally, this is about meeting community needs when it comes to public

safety. perfect example we get a call of a shooting or stabbing at one of our local parks. >> within 90 seconds to 2 minutes that drone could be overhead and it's still taking on average the officer, another 4 and a half to 5 minutes to arrive on the scene. so during that crucial time, that gap between the drone arriving in the officer, we now have a live stream event of we're able to see our suspects fleeing the scene. chief cregan adding that drones could help in natural disasters such as floods and fires. another thing that we really seeing that's really near and dear to our santa rosa communities, wildfires. so it's not just a crime response, but you're seeing it being able to use for structure, fires for wildfires, for helping assist. our fire department chief cregan says that what the drone first responder program is not is that it is not an attempt to spy on residents. this drone will never be used for just doing random surveillance patrols of neighborhoods it. so you're not going to see it just casually flying over a neighd.
