don't just work in sloan driver's own. they work preventing severe and fatal traffic crashes. >> slow down or pay up. new speed cameras coming to san francisco traffic safety advocates say will save lives. thanks for joining us here at 10. i'm noelle bellow speeding and san francisco will soon cost drivers as the city installed more than 33 cameras. >> the goal is to slow down drivers and save lives. kron 4 sarah stinson joining us live in the city with the very latest details. sarah. >> no, all these cameras are being installed in san francisco as it comes off its deadliest year of traffic crashes in the last decade. i spoke with safe street advocates at walk sf who say speed is the number one cause of deadly crashes and they're hopeful these cameras will

prevent more deaths. >> speeding drivers will soon be caught on camera in san francisco. sfmta is installing speed cameras at 33 locations across the city last year. there were 42 people killed in traffic crashes in san francisco. that was the worst in a decade. and so the speed cameras can't really get on the ground soon enough. this map shows where the cameras will be with at least 2 in each district and 7 in the south of market neighborhood. marta lindsay with walk sf says they recently visited one of the locations on ala many boulevard where they measure drivers going. 48 miles per hour in a 30 zone. all of the locations make a ton of sense. if you look at how the city chose these its base on very high crash rates, high-speed you know, they went out and tested all of these. the cameras will snap photos of rear license plates of vehicles driving 11 miles per hour or more over the posted

speed limit. then the registered owner will receive a citation in the mail ranging from 50 to $500 depending on the speed. lindsey says she's confident these efforts will slow people down. speed cameras work and they don't just work in sunriver zone. they work in preventing severe and fatal traffic crashes. sfmta has put up 8 billboards warning drivers of the cameras coming this march saying obey the speed limit. permanent signs will also be placed at 30 major city entrances that say traffic laws in san francisco are photo enforced and crews were seen monday afternoon installing new speed limit signs on gary street. i do hope that they >> encouraged other people to. so is like a lot of people that don't have the money to pay those off that hopefully like people, if people are starting to pay attention that, you know, there's like cameras, they won't. >> at least have the courage speed. i grew up walking the street to school. so honestly that way kids are safer. lindsay says the best way to

avoid a fine is to slow down, there's going to be plenty of signs around that show where these by speed cameras are. so this isn't going to be any sort of gotcha experience. >> and again, this is to change behavior. it's not to make money. >> the cameras should be up by march and sfmta plans to issue warnings to the speeding drivers for the first 2 months. and then these fines will start to be sent out by mail. i'm sara stinson reporting in san francisco. >> back to sara. thank you. a new traffic installation. meanwhile, in the sunset neighborhood of san francisco is causing some confusion. it's called the neck down. it's located on street between 9th and 10th avenues. it follows the two-way traffic into a one-way street. and then back to a two-way street. the sfmta says the purpose of neck down is to slow down cars and address traffic volume in the neighborhood. >> the people on this side to that are yielding don't know

what to do. there's the bicyclist that i worry about because i feel like people are trying to the neck down and it's just confusing. >> sfmta says the neck down is a trial. it is subject to evaluation and possible changes in the future. new at 10 scientists have detected in unusually high concentration of heavy metals at hamas landing nature reserve just 2 miles from the site of the recent battery plant. fire researchers with san jose state university of been monitoring the soil in elkhorn slough for years in the week and a half since the fire. they recently detected an increase and metals commonly found in batteries. the fire at this truck power plant forced evacuations and burned for days. researchers say their findings are clearly connected to the incident and will have an impact on the local ecosystem there continuing to monitor the soils and say monterey county officials have been made aware

appear to san francisco office buildings on friday and interacted with their union janitors, but made no arrests. they came in as best regular like they were. office workers. >> when in fact, they were not. >> olga miranda is president of seiu, local 87, which represents san francisco janitors. she says employers stood up for the janitors and asked the agents for the proper paperwork such as search warrants in judicial orders. we had bosses that spoke that. >> and if it hadn't been for the due diligence and there solidarity with workers that have been with them for many years. it could have been something different. it could have somebody could have them to walk on every floor. start asking, you know, what country were you born remember that you have rights and they can exercise those rights. whether documented or not you have rights. nicholas gonzalez is an immigration attorney was san francisco's a community resource center. >> he says those rights include the right to remain silent, the right to an

attorney and in some cases the right to prevent ice agents from entering when you're in a private place for their be your home or a private office. >> remember that you have the right to demand a warrant before letting anyone into your home, specifically ice officers. so he did not have to let anyone into your private home a private office until you see a sign warned by a judge. the janitors union agrees knowledge is power and it's important. people become educated. we do not want to panic. >> that's why we're exercising our power over panic. and that's what every worker in the bay area needs to exercise. but we also need our bosses to speak up for us. we need the places that we work to speak up for us as well. the janitors union will appear alongside the mayor and local law enforcement on tuesday morning. >> to discuss the ice raids and san francisco is commitment to being a sanctuary city. >> dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> they area jewish leaders

mark to 80 years since the liberation of auschwitz, the largest of the nazis concentration camps, kron four's lindsey ford attended tonight's commemoration of remembrance of the holocaust in san francisco. >> evening of remembrance in san francisco honoring the millions of lives lost in the holocaust and marking 80 years since the liberation of auschwitz, the largest of the nazis concentration camps, guest include international diplomats from israel, germany and austria, as well as lieutenant governor eleni kounalakis. so by being here all together to part, lift up the jewish community on this. you know, very solemn is very important that the greater message. >> it's also important tolerance and love and respect knock us as well as marco sermon, the counsel general of israel, pacific northwest acknowledged the rise of anti-semitism in the state of california, which they believe has stem from the israel and

hamas war seminar. as part of his job is to teach people about the holocaust. so history won't repeat itself. that thing that i'm remembering the shoah, the holocaust of the jewish people in it's somethign that does not only does not only belong. >> with just community, the lieutenant governor said last year california colleges saw a rise in anti-semitism. her team put out a list of not to do guidelines to schools, such as not allowing permanent protest structures around campus. >> and designated areas to express free speech. it's not about stifling freedom of speech >> but about making sure that our campuses are safe for everyone at are doing what they're there to do, which is provide the opportunity for education. >> later in the evening, guests were able to sift through files from the international institute for holocaust research. so they may find pictures of their relatives killed during the holocaust, which is the way rabbi shimon margolin was able

to find his grandfather was one 1921. he perished in 1941. margolin was also responsible for hosting monday's commemoration. he says he is proud of his jewish heritage with don't allow ourselves to become bitter, but don't yourselves to become unified. darkness was more darkness. you don't fight hatred. >> was mark each it. so you can only fight darkness with light. >> in san francisco, lindsey ford kron 4 news. community members in the south bay also gather to remember victims of the holocaust and hear from survivors. the ceremony and san jose was hosted by council member david cohen and several local jewish community organizations, santa clara county district attorney jeff rosen spoke about losing family members in concentration camps and the strength of the jewish community today. the jews that are. among us today. are the sure up time other surviving remnant? one of the teachings in the talmud. is that the remnant saves all. it's a

>> a san jose restaurant is closing up for good. they say it's not just because of expensive operating costs. the restaurant also been broken into 4 times in the last year. we showed you the surveillance videos of those burglaries, 3 of them happened in the same month. but kron four's jack molmud reports, the restaurant is planning to go out with a bang. >> funny farm restaurant here says been non stop break-ins over 2024. set the back by tens of thousands of dollars. but they said what also is putting them out of business is simply just the high operating costs of running a restaurant in silicon valley. >> there may never be a place to get with that combo. a grubber kick quickly service and delicious food has the funny farm in san jose's

evergreen. we love welcoming new guests. we love hosting everyone. it's invaluable to us. that's just who we are. decor. we first got to know funny farm and its staff last summer. >> from back-to-back break it 3 of them in just one month. co-owner monica levi says each one of them cost thousands of dollars to repair costs of the, you know, the break-ins and repair costs and all the things that people don't think about when they think restaurant. everything since the break-ins that funny farm, local leaders have tried to protect the businesses on this trip with an increased police presence that. >> help prevent crimes but not the other challenge. we went from an $1800 a month. >> bill, 3 years later, we're paying 6,500 a month for pg. e the restaurant has also been dealing with increasing costs of food like eggs, levi says decided to close was not easy. one of my staff said. >> this is not a business. this is our home. this is where we feel safe. san jose councilmember domingo can dallas sent a statement to

academy school officials first noticed that outage when they showed up for an indoor basketball tournament on saturday. the games had to be canceled. the schools also expected to be closed for at least a week. >> you don't want to see that. these are these are children. it's just disappointing that that somebody would do this to a school where these kids did nothing, didn't. it didn't deserve this. >> but district spokesperson says initial repair quotes range from 150 to $250,000. while kids got today off and likely tomorrow as well. teachers were at the school district's headquarters on mare island today. they've been working on at home lesson plans for their students to participate later this week. the bay area gearing up to celebrate the year of the snake, the lighting of the giant firecracker will take place wednesday to officially kick off the lunar new year festivities will culminate with the annual lunar new year parade set for february. 15th. hundreds of thousands of

people are expected to attend. >> wow. this year, the chinese you we definitely we have fireworks there. we also actually have this is the first year ever having a drawing stroll that will happening in this chinese new year parade. we also have a lot of new event coming up for his new year's celebration. and i think that's one of the reason why we can attract so many people to join us in siskel. >> this year there's going to be a total of 21 floats in the parade event. organizers expecting about 200,000 people to attend this year's festival talking about drones. drone shows are always really cool. we you know, we we do fireworks right here. but i feel like drones are becoming the new. they're kind of became the thing. yeah, hopefully we're not seeing too much rain, but i know we need the rain. always hard. always happens, though, for yeah, we have a festival in the middle of february, right in the heart of the rainy season. so yeah, rain that something may have to contend with, that's easily probably the prettiest

a fireworks display are going to see. >> anywhere. and boy, what a parade it is up there. you got a nece clear skies right now. it's going to be very cold around the bay area chile. >> out there already. so these temperatures are going move into the 30's outside saint clear in the san francisco, too. and with that in mind, these temperatures are dropping off. 39 in palo alto. 39 now and the more 38 in dublin. 47 in san francisco year. 38 napa. 39 saline. a chilly 38 in vacaville. so getting cold out there already temperatures going to be falling off. in fact, we've got some freeze watches posted across much of the north bay, the east bay, even on the thin side of the down into the south bay as well. going to see some patchy frost all around the bay area pretty much tomorrow morning. maybe even along the coastline. you might see that as well as these temperatures likely to see a few numbers drop off in the 30's out toward the coast. so overnight lows, there you go. 39 in half moon bay about 32 in freezing in live more. you can below freezing tonight. places like santa rosa about 33 in napa. 34 in nevada and even about 38

degrees in san jose. so cold overnight tonight and a cold start your day tomorrow. of course, that storm system rolling all the way into southern california, bringing them some beneficial rainfall, helping control some of the fire situation. they're in fact, they had more rain just from this one week system than they've seen all year long behind that things kind of clearing out. but yeah, we've got a sense that we're going to get back into some stormy weather. in fact, clouds going to begin to roll back in about the middle of the week. then as we head in toward well about friday or so. maybe we start talking about more rain will have more on that in your tent. coming up a few minutes. >> thank you. lauren center is a police pitching the idea of adding drones to their force. the police chief there says deploying drones would significantly cut down response times making a big difference when lives are at risk. >> and right now it takes us on average of 6 minutes. and 31 seconds for an officer to arrive on scene to a priority. one call perfect example we get a call of a shooting or stabbing at one of our local parks within 90 seconds to 2

minutes that drone could be overhead and it's still taking on average the officer, another 4 and a half to 5 minutes to arrive on the scene. so during that crucial time, that gap between the drone arriving in the officer, we now have a e event or not. we're able to see our suspects fleeing the scene. >> officers say the drones would be useful during natural disasters like wildfires, but not everyone's in favor. some residents there are worried they could be used to spy on people. in response. the police department says those drones would only be used for emergency situations. never for random surveillance. francisco police are asking people to avoid the area of 9th and mission streets in the soma neighborhood tonight after a shooting there left one person injured. police say happened just before 5 o'clock this evening. officers were told the shooter could still be in a nearby building. the victim was taken to the hospital with multiple gunshot

wounds. police are still on scene investigating. a sideshow led to a shooting in oakland last night. one person died. 2 others were injured at the intersection of 12th street and 9th avenue near 8.80. those victims were later located at a nearby hospital following the sideshow of the one of them died. the 2 others are said to be in stable condition tonight. gilroy police asking for your help in finding an armed robbery suspect too. they say aimed at their gun at a cashier and stole money. this was around 03:00am on thursday at the garlic farm centers along the 101 travel park circle on ramp anyone with information on who this person might be is asked to contact gilroy. police. coaches and students from sonoma state university are considering filing a civil rights lawsuit to block them from cutting athletics programs at the university

last week. the university suddenly announced it was cutting those programs saying it was facing a 24 million dollar budget deficit. the decision to cut the sports programs laying off dozens of faculty and eliminating some academic departments was a punch in the gut to students and coaches who got the university was doing well. we were all caught off guard. >> i know there's a lot of budget cuts to be made. is pretty shocking to find out that they're just eliminating like entire departments. >> the university says it is aware of the grievances but has no comment at this time. >> coming up next on kron for news at 10 new legislation to help victims of natural disasters by getting big oil companies to pay up. why the proposal? it's starting some controversy in the state legislature. plus, time is running out for trump era tax cuts. republicans and democrats debate over whether or not to bring them back. and

trump taking action to reshape the military. he signed an executive order today. >> barring transgender people from serving openly in the military. kron 4 stephanie rothman has reaction from bay area's the transgender community. >> i saw traumatic things about the way people outed hunted, humiliated. stephanie

waite is a transgender woman who served in the marines for 9 years during the 80's and the 90's before she transitions. >> she says banning a group that already makes up a small minority in the military will only push people back into the closet like she had to do herself. >> we have a shameful past history in the past that were making progress on and now this administration and its, you know, its supporters want to turn the clock back, at least 50 years on lgbtq, right, that groups of people simply because of what they are is completely contrary to that core military value. jorge reyes, salinas is with a quality california. >> he says the new requirements in the order that accuse transgender troops of being not physically or mentally capable to serve hurt the country more than help, but they're already thousands of transgender service members currently in the military who have met the standards and more than proven themselves to serve. >> want to protect their country on inauguration day. the president also revoked and

>> at an assembly meeting assembly budget hearing in governor gavin newsom, special legislative session. lawmakers debated to specific bills. the first will allocate 25 million dollars for immigration-related legal services in the state. the newsom administration says those funds will help fight against mass deportations. the second bill will allocate an additional 25 million dollars to the california department of justice to help the tourney general rob bonta fund future lawsuits against the trump administration. the full assembly is expected to vote on the legislation pieces this thursday. if passed, they will advance to the governor's desk. tax season started today. there are a few changes this year. the irs will accept and process 2024 income tax returns from now through april. 15th, new tools and features are making the process a bit easier includes online chat bots and voice bots to help filers who call in for help as americans

opened their w twos. republicans and president trump are warning a tax increase could be on the horizon if existing tax cuts are not extended. the sweeping cuts congress passed back in 2017 under president trump are due to expire at the end of this year. republicans say the tax cuts, grew the economy, but democrats accuse republicans of ignoring the middle class and giving the largest tax breaks to the top one percent. they can provide a massive tax cut. >> to the very rich to give tax breaks for the wealthiest americans. take the trump tax cuts and make them permanent. and that's exactly what we're doing. >> president trump says he'll likely need votes from democrats to extend these cuts. the non-partisan congressional budget office does predict extending them. would add 3.3 trillion dollars to the national debt by the year 2035. new video from a gas station. security camera points to a possible cause for

the deadly eaton eaton fire in los angeles county. a law firm representing a woman whose home was destroyed in the fire released this video which shows electrical sparking out utility transmission tower near altadena. the lawsuit alleges southern california edison, the primary electric utility for las angeles caused the fire. a spokesperson for the utility says it's too early to say exactly what caused the fire. so far. there are more than 20 lawsuits filed against the utility and connection. as people in southern california work to rebuild after those devastating wildfires, a new bill would allow them to sue major oil and gas companies for damages. the affordable insurance and climate recovery act alleges the fossil fuel industry has contributed to climate change, causing natural disasters like wildfires. it would let natural disaster victims and insurance companies bring lawsuits against major companies in the industry. san

francisco senator scott wiener who has offered this piece of legislation says it will help hold the industry accountable >> this is an industry that has known. that its product was fueling climate change was going to lead to these disasters for decades because they had the science. they on that science. they suppress that and they have done all of this order to make money. >> some republican lawmakers and industry leaders are speaking out against the bill saying it for a false narrative about climate change and scapegoats workers. national weather conference focused on climate and meteorology trends is underway in lake tahoe. it's called operation sierra storm. it's led by scientists and meteorology experts kron 4 meteorologist gayle ong is there today. she spoke to a former fema director about the importance of flood insurance. even parts of california that are near the water. >> we seem to go from extreme

too extreme. so the last couple years we were seeing flooding in places that never seen flooding in for a lot of folks. they warn in what was called a special flood risk. lot people call floods. also someone on the flood insurance. doesn't flood here. and to their homes are flooded. so consider a flood insurance even if you don't live worse. a requirement because there's not many places that are not at risk of extreme rainfall events. >> this national weather conference looks at the latest weather and climate trends skills going to be alive at that conference again tomorrow on the kron. 4 morning news. ski resorts in lake tahoe. meanwhile, seeing plenty of fresh snow. you saw gayle all bundled up in that video. this video was taken at heavenly mountain ski resort shows a view from the top of california base lodge. the area has received more than 10 inches of fresh. so just in the past, 48 hours, chief meteorologist lawrence karnow was talking about all that

snow. they were going to be getting it materialize, lawrence. thank goodness, right. they've had a lot of snow right before thanksgiving and then again, right before the christmas holidays. and then. >> boy, it really just shut off in january. they've had nothing since until these past storms move through. >> this weekend. so they were waiting for some of that snow. of course, they've been making snow up there as well. that of the pack up there. but nice to see all that snow coming up over the sierra nevada and working its way all the way into southern california. that was the best news of all. but yeah, more of that snow on the way. and i think we've got some more storms are going to some more snow up in the high country. in fact, really nice snow up there. so great reports across the high country. many of the resorts getting a lot of snow up there all the way. the mammoth area, good 6 inches of snow and even more than that in southern california, you can believe that the focus of the storm was really down south where some places there now ball the 17 inches of snow in the los angeles area. so that storm system rolling on through. yeah, we did have some minor mudslides, but overall, i think a very beneficial system rolling on through cold air

tonight. and so we are watching some frost advisories to 1000 oaks calabassas and almost a downtown, los angeles, a chilly temperatures in the 30's for overnight lows outside. right now, we've got clear skies here in the bay area. that is the way it's going to stay all night long. temperatures today. well, not that little bit above the average 61 degrees in san francisco, 16 oakland, 63 degrees in san jose. 61 degrees in la boarded a 63 and conquer. 67 in santa rosa. one of the warmer spots of cooler along the immediate coastline of that low, just kind of spin into southern california, bringing the rainfall there. of course, we had a few scattered light showers here in the bay area. but overall, boy, what we've seen is just that jet stream headed well to the north now, this going to be more of a progressive pattern developing outside, even though we've got ridge of high pressure out there, that's going to be moving out of town. so and the next few days going to start to see those clouds rolling back in about mid-week. and then as we get into friday, the storm starts lineup see almost perpendicular to the coastline. so this may be one of those situations where we see a lot of rain north of the

golden gate bridge. by the time you make your way in redwood city all the way down into san jose, it may be pretty dry. maybe just an occasional showers. the focus is going to be again, north of the golden gate bridge right through the weekend. then as we get into late monday and tuesday of next week and into wednesday, that storm system dropped further south. start talking about some rain for temperatures going to be on the cool side. 50's couple low 60's by tomorrow afternoon over the next few days. yeah. frosty otart the day tomorrow. and then as we get in toward wednesday, yeah, a few more clouds rolling our way and then we get to friday. there's a chance we could be talking about a few scattered showers, mainly north of the golden gate bridge. but it looks like a nice trend. rounding out january, starting february, getting back to some rainfall back in the bay area. we had our break. it's time to to ball. let's get back thanks thanks. well as storage, new mural making its debut in the mission district nearly 50 years ago today on this day in the bay video from january 1976. >> shows the stunning colors of the ci, a mural painted by
