>> deborah: other news today, snow was falling in many parts of the country and it was so bad at virginia tech university that classes were canceled, which led to a massive snowball fight. hundreds of students and civilians taking part in the snowball fight, pelting each other with as as many snowballs as meantime in chicago, this is the scene. temperatures are freezing, and that has led to a floating ice on lake michigan, where people are actually walking on them. officials are saying, please do not do that. stay off the ice because obviously, you could fall through. and road debris causes around 200,000 accidents every year. this bus driver was transporting the high school basketball team when a piece of metal through dome i flew through the windshield and hit him in the chest. incredibly, he was able to guide the bus off the road and keep the students safe. he spoke with ann mercogliano. >> a school bus driver is heading down the highway. then, this happens.

a metal projectile flies right through the windshield, hitting him in the chest. he screams in agony. two high school coaches come to the driver's aid. they try to calm the driver and call 911. >> the driver is injured. >> miraculously, the driver was able to keep the boss on the road until he could safely pull over outside bellevue, washington. and here he is today. >> this is a piece of steel that is about 8 inches long, 3 inches wide. >> did you even know what hit you? >> i did not. it came in, hit me on the right side of my chest. it then fell to my lap. >> deborah: the driver thinks what hit him is a spring leaf, that is a piece of metal attacked to an axle that helps with the suspension. every 30 seconds in this country, a car is stolen.
