for joining us for kron. 4 news at 11. i'm dan thorn. a powerful storm slamming much of the bay area tonight. we have heavy rain causing road closures and flooding in san francisco and of course, other parts of the bay area. gusty winds out there as well ripping through communities, even bringing down some trees. caltrans crews have been out there clearing debris tonight, especially along major roadways like highway 17. let's thing send things over now to our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow for what's

happening outside with the lawrence, in a really dangerous day around the bay area. now a dangerous night outside the rain continuing out there. turning. >> more towards showers out there, but still very dangerous out on the roadways. >> you're looking toward the san mateo bridge. things are very wet out there. and now we're seeing the showers show up. it's not that continuous rain, but boy, we have tremendous amounts of rain over the past. 24 hours over 5 and a half inches. ben lowman in the santa cruz mountains for quarter canfield danville, checking in 3 and a 3rd san bruno over 2 and a half redwood city. also over 2 and a half inches and 2 inches. plus in sunnyvale. but all around the bay area got a good soaking of rain. so the ground is entirely saturated now. so you get the showers. and even though they may not seen a significant where all our brain is running right down into the tributaries, everything is so saturated. that's going to cause rapid rise on many creeks and streams still seeing some pockets of some heavier amounts of rainfall. some of that now making its way into

parts of the east bay. see some of the cells that are pushing on through right now. you get toward livermore and toss a harp pleasanton san ramon, some heavy rainfall moving to their when will it come to an end? we'll talk about that coming up a few minutes. lauren lot. we're going continue our storm team coverage tonight in the north bay where there is currently a flood watch in several counties, including. >> sonoma county kron 4 stephanie rothman in santa rosa with the very latest. >> it's pretty quiet right now in downtown santa rosa. but it was a different story earlier in the day across sonoma county. it was raining heavily making traffic conditions hazardous for some. >> rain turning roads slick throughout sonoma county on thursday. in downtown santa rosa. >> i came through occidental earlier and there was water pouring down all the hills the water side of the road. and drove great. it was flooded. to go through.

>> the westbound rona park express right here and show their id a closed because of flooding. i wait 12, road and fremont ride is also shut down in both directions. >> multiple problems spots can be near streams and creeks, including at laguna de santa rosa creek. >> in sebastopol shoppers took advantage of a break in the rain pick up groceries and other essentials waiting a lot leaving. >> yeah, i hope everybody gets a u.s. now. about. say. >> it's been some flooding, but it hasn't. just to be is on. so very thick. >> the flood watch is going to continue their saturday night. so now is the time to make sure that you're signed up for local emergency alerts. and of course, as always avoid high waters reporting in santa rosa. stephanie rothman kron. 4 news. >> the rain caused a part of

the hill to give way in moraine county. chp posting this picture of a rock slide on 101, southbound south of rodeo. one of the lanes is blocked because the rocks and dirt have spilled out onto the road. caltrans crews are on scene clearing away the debris. the lanes are not expected to reopen until at least 8 o'clock tomorrow morning. flooded roads all around the bay area. first responders are trying to drive home an important message. if you encounter a flooded road, don't try to drive through it. >> just really pay attention to this morning's. if you don't have to drive, don't drive yourself a little bit more time. >> another thing to be aware of this to the already soaked ground that strong wind out there increasing the chances of falling trees. take a look at this. a giant tree actually fell in oakland. fire department posted these pictures from skyline boulevard in brand iraq way. crews were working to get it cleared away as quickly as possible and in the east bay in martinez, a tree crashed

>> this is saratoga way that leads to the santa cruz mountains behind me. when you drive into the mountains, you'll see a lot of floodinp in several trees down. >> thursday storm closed the uterus, creek in gilroy to spill out over rent avenue. it was a common scene in the south bay with heavy rains and strong winds. that combination brought down this tree in the santa cruz mountains just outside of cupertino. keeping line crews busy according to pg e spokesperson, the south bay stephanie mag alone. we did see multiple areas damage locations. we had trees that were falling that fell over our lines, appropriate conductors. we also saw reports of underground vaults that were flooded. >> and that really played a big role in some of the outages that we saw this morning. >> at one point in the morning pg e was reporting 8,000 customers without power in the south bay. that number dropped to less than 2000 by noon because of isolating technology. what that does is isolates locations that have. >> damage so that the rest of

>> fire trucks and everything and iowa. all. the poor guy 1000 on fire. >> well, a man is dead tonight after his home catches fire in brentwood. this happened just after 11 o'clock last night. crews say the fire started in the garage and that's where they found. the victim has been identified as 69 year-old james fields. >> disabled man was a nice man. well, look, kind >> kind know you. >> it was a good name of the victim was found in a unique location for the time of day. >> the crews would have made it into the into the structure for search the common places that someone will be found. >> neighbors say he was living alone after his wife had recently passed away. but his granddaughters would visit him often. crews say the constant downpours last night made it hard for them to investigate. they also say there were no smirking smoke detectors in

the garage. the cause of the fire still under investigation. 3 council members are stepping in to keep fire stations open in the city of oakland. and this is as the city's navigating a major budget shortfall. kron 4 sarah stinson joining us and studio now with details on their proposal. sarah. >> dan simon and city leaders are calling this lifesaving legislation. it would reallocate funds to ensure no more fire stations close when the news first broke. >> that there were 6 slated closures of fire stations in oakland due to our budget crisis. the community rally we heard from thousands of oakland residents, petitions, rallies and now a new proposal from 3 oakland council members to keep fire stations afloat if approved, the new ordinance would reopen to shuttered fire stations. >> and prevent the closure of 4 others. fire stations. 25 28 are currently closed, at least

through june as a part of the city's effort to close in more than 200 million dollar budget deficit in this budget situation where we really have to take a step back and ask ourselves, what can the city do? >> and i think we all understand that public safety is at the top of that pyramid feet looked for every penny. this has been truly, truly. when this task of finding every last penny possible that could go towards building our fire stations, councilmembers giannini ramachandran zac unger and rebecca kaplan are proposing the city reallocate millions of dollars from 3 city funds to pay for the station's the biggest sources of funding for this. >> 2.6 million dollars that comes from the jpa. the coliseum >> has experienced an uptick of sales and revenue more than expected. so that positive profit is being able to flow back to the city oakland, fire captain and union president sepp oler described how crucial it is for the rest of the city council to approve

highway. the massive crash sending multiple injuries and sparking a car fire. this happened near multnomah falls, which is about 30 miles outside the city of portland. the area seeing 60 mile per hour winds and whiteout conditions tonight. also, the travel is treacherous in the sierras. heavy rain has been dumping down up there. chp truckee says there have been several spin outs and significant delays along the major highways. at one point, traffic was being held on 80 because of the snow. officials say a lot of traffic has been trying to move through in these conditions and crews are just trying to keep up. >> we just ask the people, you know, that patients bring a blanket, bring snacks, do expect delays. there are going to be delays and and then you're driving in the wintertime. heavy snow. it's always a good idea to increase your following distance, you know, reduce your speed carry chains. >> travelers are being told to avoid travel until the storm

clears. snow is expected in the sierra through tomorrow afternoon. and here's an example of what not to do. someone decided to drive their lambert games with a heavy snowfall in the sierra. this luxury car which goes for around $250,000 struggling to stay on highway 89 outside of lake tahoe. yeah, there it is. swerving off the road. we're told the driver eventually ended up in a ditch needed to be towed. of course, that puts a strain on the services up there. so don't do this. so let's take a live look outside right now. and highway 80 in the donner summit area. i-80 in the donner summit area cropper. see meteorologist lawrence karnow giving us a look at what's happening in the high country. yeah. pretty barren out there right now. as far as cars are concerned. just a rough ride getting over the high country now. but if you wait just a little bit, boy. >> i think by tomorrow afternoon, things going to be opening up a bit. you're gonna be able to get up there and enjoy some great fresh powder for key on this weekend up there. can see that snow coming down all day long in the high country. just piling

up over the sierra nevada. even a lake level. they're probably gonna see a foot, maybe a foot and a half of snow. so it's been coming down as still does. in fact, your chain upon 50 80, just a rough ride to get up there. but i think tomorrow things should begin to open up. winter storm warning still in effect until a friday night. but well, i think these are really ease up by tomorrow afternoon. and that should really allow things to get going as far as the roads are concerned. something to watch out for the national weather services issued and avalanche warning across the great lake tahoe area enough in the major ski resorts. they maintain those slopes very well. but you get out back if you go anywhere across the sierra nevada, boy, you've got a you can trigger an avalanche really, really easily. and these kind of conditions to all snow early on and then giving way to some partly cloudy skies as we head throughout the weekend and some dry conditions. but what a nice time to get up to the slopes. all right. it is still windy out there. look at palm trees. look at the flags waving in the wind out there looking out toward the bay bridge. we've got scattered showers popping up around the bay area. the winds been really a big issue today,

bringing down many trees across the bay area and causing power outagee. wind advisory in effect until early in the morning tomorrow. so some of those gusts of 30 miles an hour near the coastline and you're seeing the storms moved through in pockets of heavier amounts of rain moving on by. so the storm not done with this just jed, you can see they're low pressure still off the coastline. so that's going to spin up a couple more showers throughout the night tonight and maybe couple lingering showers tomorrow morning after that looks like things are going to taper off by tomorrow evening. we clear things out for your valentine's day. slight chance of showers again as we head in towards sunday, but a much weaker storm system and then maybe again by the middle of next week. but overall, looks like things are going to tail off a bit rain wise. and that's probably a good thing. we've seen so much this past week. tomorrow, just a chance of showers early on drying out by the afternoon this weekend. looking pretty good. if you want to head on out just a slight chance of showers on sunday. that's good. i think we could use a little bit my gosh. we right things okay, lawrence, thank you. well, a bit of a cute and wild rescue here for the

california highway patrol officers rescuing the sea lion pup last night from the candlestick park off-ramp. northbound 101. the agency says they got a call shortly before 10 about the pop wandering into traffic. know chp officers responded and eventually got it. that sea lion. the list of nominees for this year's rock and roll hall of fame. now out, some of the artists include mariah carey chubby checker, cyndi lauper, outkast and fish. it also includes 2 musical brothers who have had public feuds and recently unions, including the black crowes and oasis nominees will be voted on by more than 1000 artists. historians and music industry professions. on. and there you have it. nba all-star weekend not been running nba theme pop-up shops will be.
