8:14 am
hold off until maybe this afternoon. so we've got the light as rain below in lower elevations, and the snow about 5, 5500 feet will go for quiet and sunny. by the time we get to tuesday. so it's going to be beautiful. here's a look at the futurecast. this is forecast model showing the snow going through the tahoe area and then rain in pines and look up quickly. it comes away. so it's really just a morning event. and that's the same front that's bringing just a few raindrops in the bay area. in fact, we see a lot of clouds in the bay area, but there are a few rays of poking through. you can see it whether the sfo, san mateo on the bay bridge. now, tammy golden gate bridge, which been bridge. it's all really a lovely day. here is that storm is bringing just a few rain drops and more snow to the sierra. it really dissipate. sits a dying front. it's a weak front. goes right across the bay area and boom, it's gone. and then we go for a drier air mass, mostly cloudy skies today. and tonight and
8:15 am
then look, look, here is wednesday into thursday. another quick pop of rain. so it's going to be just a light. one. basically the weather pattern is fairly settled, even though we have a few bits of rain here and there the rainfall totals are not impressive. look at the santa rosa 100th of an inch up to maybe a 3rd of an inch come by by wednesday system by thursday. we'll see maybe a quarter of an inch in novato and 18, 100's in mountain view. so really don't need to get the big rain. you're out. you don't need to worry about your umbrella. forecast highs today. a lot of areas in the 50's a few in the low 60's san jose where the warmer spots at 62 degrees. concord, 59. so if you're heading out this afternoon, it's a lot like yesterday afternoon, maybe a degree or 2 warmer in a few spots. a look ahead. yes, shows us the mostly cloudy skies today and then we get that chance of rain coming in again on wednesday. and the 7 day forecast is a feast for the i know we get a few clouds

8:17 am
america may eventually had international influence. and so globe organization rooted right here in oakland, california. well, and you're the co-founder of the museum. so walk us through the work about getting that off the ground. yeah. well, first of all, thanks for having me back again. been little over one year since we opened up the museum and this past thursday night, we opened survival pending revolution. it's a brand new exhibition. it is about the 65 survival programs at the party put this is the programs where they fed kids before they went to school, woke up at the crack of down because kids were hungry. could learn in class were talking about people who couldn't get access to medical care system of free medical clinics and coordinated doctors and nurses and students to provide that there are seniors who are getting robbed when they went to the atm to cut the pension checks of social security checks. they asked oakland pd to protect them. oakland pd said well closer to the curve. so as the panthers who came out, escorted them to those atm's. and so these are the stories, these programs that we're talking about, a museum this time around. well, and walk us through some of the notable
8:18 am
artifacts and images that are presented in the new exhibit giving people should really pay attention to. yeah. i mean, we have 5 photographers featured in exhibition. people know like stephen shames and probably jones. we also have a roof, marion route. we have 2 children as he was up at the photographer. so we have these very captivating images. we also have stuff from the duct issue up to the foundation collection that we're digitizing its house, the stanford. but we all know p and it's been digitized and brought to the downtown oakland. so we knew some of the stuff from that collection like examples of the a medical clinic budget. there's a lot of things on display, whether it's on the was on the table to split case. yeah, we are showing some of the images as well. you may be walk us through what kind what we're seeing here. so some of these images are from each one teach one. this one right here is bobby headed. he was the first recruiter, the party and at 17 years old, he was actually the first person to be killed in the party. and so that image was actually tribute to fallen comrades from 1968 to 1971, there were 32 panthers who
8:19 am
were assassinated by beheading, was killed 2 days after dr king was assassinated. most folks don't talk about and so we talk about how progress of the bay area's or what our values here. we sometimes forget that is entrenched in panther blood. and so it's there's a balance in the exhibition. it's highlight of all the programs and services that the panthers did. but also the intense repression they face from the state government. and so, you know, it's important both sides of that story and how well is this exhibit going to be around its going to be a for at least a year? okay. people have time to see it. absolutely. what about the curation process? because i'm sure so much history as you just described with the panthers, so many different images. how did you decide? well, first of all, i had a friend a fantastic team. i was the leak curator, but 2 other curators believe jennings was a veteran panthers been preserving panther history since 1998. winning local red. she was independent curator out of texas who help me out with a lot of the visuals. and we also work with a collective
8:20 am
of panthers about 10 different folks who feedback and gave input on the narrative in on the stories being told to make sure we did it right. a lot of museums, the subject of the history don't get to tell their own stories. but we kind of thought it was important to reverse that in this particular instance, because the federal government controlled so much of the panthers narrative, 70% of news articles about the party at that time were penned by influenced by the fbi. so we want to make sure that the panthers had a voice in this and that they could contribute to the exhibition about themselves. now you had a launch event for this new exhibit just a few days ago 100 ago, that thursday night we had over 800 people come to the opening 6 edition graduations. thank you. it was a packed room all night. and how did it feel just to see all those faces and to get that feedback from the community? yeah, i mean, i was inspired because i see all these people just really taking it in. mean, that just take a moment. reflect on what they were experiencing. some people came in black panther history. some didn't know at all. but there was a space for
8:21 am
everybody to learn something. and then opening night we had 5 panthers come speak on the stage and give their personal reflections on this about programs. and how would you say that the work of the black panthers continues today? look at the state of the country when we're talking about the free breakfast program, that was a program that the federal government took a nationwide and that they're now looking at repealing. and so the repurchase program, it became national because the party was national. and so they made it a big deal when the federal government took it over. it's because the fbi director said he was more scared of the free breakfast program than the guns at the pettit said as they want to neutralize the panthers and make us more reliant on the government, the non ourselves. and so it's a perfect time to be thinking about the legacy of the party and where we go for as we start to wrap things up here you have a message for viewers this black history month. i mean, come down to the museum. there's a lot to learn a lot to be inspired by and mostly i

think it's a testament of what people's power looks like. this is a museum that was founded by the community and by panthers and a lot of people have contributed to it and as well as exhibition we always need donors. but we did this with community support, you know, and so. it's a testament of what we can do today and what we should be continue to do in our communities and any projects that you can tease ahead to that you're will next year is the 60th anniversary of the black panther party. okay. they've a lot in store and this is also the drc peta foundation, which of the pan organization. it's 30th anniversary. so we're celebrating. we have all kind of programs in the works and with thinking about how we take this open story and make in this museum work and take it national. all right. very good. doctor xavier book with the black panther party museum. thank you so much. thank you having all right. we'll be right back. and

first of all, congratulations on the new exhibit, but also give us some context about the black panther party and its roots here in the bay area. the black panther party is from oakland. it is a bury, a story that is unique to this place. and one time it was a small grass organization concerned with police brutality, concerned with access to health care concern with. >> not having your kids fed before school, but those same issues that we're here in oakland were all over the country. and so they had a presence in 48 states across america may eventually had international influence. and so globe organization rooted right here in oakland, california. well, and you're the co-founder of the museum. so walk us through the work about getting that off the ground. yeah. well, first of all, thanks for having me back again. been little over one year since we opened up the museum and this past thursday night, we opened survival pending revolution. it's a brand new exhibition. it is about the 65 survival programs at the party put this is the programs where they fed kids before they went to school, woke up at the crack of down because kids were hungry.

a big deal when the federal government took it over. it's because the fbi director said he was more scared of the free breakfast program than the guns at the pettit said as they want to neutralize the panthers and make us more reliant on the government, the non ourselves. and so it's a perfect time to be thinking about the legacy of the party and where we go for as we start to wrap things up here, you have a message for viewers this black history month. i mean, come down to the museum. there's a lot to learn a lot to be inspired by and mostly i think it's a testament of what people's power looks like. this is a museum that was founded by the community and by panthers and a lot of people have contributed to it and as well as exhibition we always need donors. but we did this with community support, you know, and so. it's a testament of what we can do today and what we should be continue to do in our communities and any projects that you can tease ahead to that you're will next year is the 60th anniversary of the black panther party. okay.
