denigrates native americans. and police investigate a stabbing death in san jose on valentine's day. what we know about the victim, the kron 4 morning. good morning. thank you for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news. it's monday, february 17. >> i'm james fletcher in for a harvey here at the 05:00am hour and we want to start the hour with a check of the weather. couldn't have asked for a better weekend. we've got john with a look ahead. hey, john, i know it was pretty nice one for sure. got all that rain out of the way on thursday. and it did indeed cooperate for lunar new year, nba all-stars. and of course, all your valentine's plans this morning. pretty cooperative to as we get the work week started your look outside from sfo is looking nice. we do have a little bit of low and high clouds mixed in together across the region, but don't let that stop you. not going interfere with anything in your day. any sort of shower activity as well up

north towards the oregon border. we do see a little bit of fog this morning. that is mostly concentrated up around santa rosa for the most part, what we're seeing is just some low clouds up above us in visibility as of right now is actually holding okay for most areas. temperature wise. we're in the 40's, not a lot of 30's on the map this morning were actually holding on to a fairly mild start courtesy of some of that mid-level cloud cover. we're seeing the only spot in the 30's we're seeing is vacaville at 38 degrees this morning. so all in all today, we are looking at a few passing clouds. temperatures fairly mild. daytime highs comfortably cool in the 50's to 60's and some nice peeks of sunshine between those clouds. >> roadways so far, you know, right? it was a busy weekend on the roads, though. and you can expect today to likely be a pretty busy one as well. but not this morning. so far, we're doing nice and easy out there and nothing holding you up on any of our spans. as i

mentioned, we have fog up around santa rosa, but that is not interfering with any of your bridge crossings. james. john, thank you. 502, is the time. and boy was a fun filled weekend at chase center, creating lots of memories for all the fans that showed up. >> nba all-star weekend in the bay area all wrapped up now. but well, we have the best players in rising star showing up to show off and sporting events, skills contest. you name it all led to the biggest night on the court, which was, of course, the all-star game on sunday and kron. 4 sports director scott reese has the highlights from chase center. >> the nba all-star game here in san francisco. the culmination of a weekend's worth of fun and entertainment. you had the best basketball players on the planet all gathered under one roof. the game did not disappoint with steph curry being the kobe bryant, most valuable player. and we got our storybook ending. >> as celebration of a lot of great things happen in basketball to be playing with these guys for as long as we have light. it's obviously our

spots come out, put on a show and i thank them for, you know, help do that and are and and go to state because, you know, a lot histories have been out here, but the competition and the camaraderie and the legacy that we operate is what it's all about. have to be a part of that celebration. it was way more. >> like fun, chaos. and i thought it would be there's so many moving parts and, you know, it takes like in ba is really good at like putting stuff like this together. there's so many things behind the scenes that, you know, don't get talked about enough that go through the weekend, which was really special and cool to just be a part of that. obviously just being back home with my family and friends is really do for the weekend. it was, though week it was cool to bay area came out show major it's always good reunite with so over teammate james curry is good deal florida you know, got that so that we get a world. >> now that the all-star game is in the rearview mirror, the

warriors can enjoy the rest of their all-star break. they will reconvene for their next game on friday in sacramento. at chase center, scott reese kron 4 sports. >> well, for the fans who couldn't get inside chase center, the fun literally overflowed into the shops and businesses all around thrive city. hundreds of people celebrating the fact that bay area hosted the nba all-star weekend kron four's jack moment has more on that part. hundreds of people were piling in to thrive city on sunday to celebrate the final day of the nba all-star weekend. it also gave many folks who call san francisco home. >> a chance to show off to the world what their city and also the bay area as a whole. >> ha >> a celebration for the end of a successful weekend in san francisco. the nba all-star weekend taking over the bay for the first time in 25 years. and you guys favorite part about the weekend. so just the festivities, the vibes, the coach people lined up early to go through security and check thtmselves

into the chase center for the all-star games. it's the first year they're hosting a mini tournament. but those tickets inside they cost an arm and a leg is good. that's been really good. actually, countless fans just like this couple from fresno drove hours to be here in the moment, taking it all i always grew up or at lemon bay area from big giants niners. actually grew up not really watching basketball, but the gentle warrior games to come on after the giants games. so brother grew up watching the warrior games and became aware everything was a celebration. some fans were upset. big games weren't blasted on the big screen at the front of the chase center. yeah, i was hoping they're going to play it, but it's alright. we'll find somewhere much it. it got find out that they were going to do when we came but fans can still watch from inside bars and restaurants. but for this couple, think also yeah, far very far. if you're coming all this way from taiwan, you better get a ticket inside all

have harassed long maybe 16 years war. yeah. just tried to get their moment of fame on the tnt sports cast like this gentleman who had it out of silver 2028 poster. i think you'd be a great candidate and yeah. >> it actually does. is i think what he's done great of a shia that's been a huge success for local businesses in raising the bar for the city of san francisco says mayor daniel lurie, business leaders are nba owners are here and they're oh, you're city looks good. and there's sense of optimism energy in the city that they haven't seen for years. they all have said that to me all weekend long. so it's been a great weekend for us to show off and tell the world that san francisco is on the rise of mayor. larry also hinted at the fact that this was a huge weekend for san francisco knowing that this time next year, the pay will be also be hosting the super bowl as well

as several world cup games later on in the year. for now, reporting in san francisco, jack womack kron, 4 news. >> and san francisco mayor daniel lurie also took to social media posting, quote, it was amazing to see curry take home the mvp on the home court. thank you to the nba and all our city workers who made this weekend. >> a success. >> all right. now onto some other local news groups in silicon valley are calling for the removal of a mural at the palo alto branch of the santa clara county superior court. the nc or the naacp, along with silicon valley and san jose along with the milwaukee alone eat rive said the mural displays columnist imagery denigrating native americans. however, the court can't make a decision without county approval. they've raised concerns about the merrill for several years, but the county has taken a position that that mural is a historical piece of art that cannot be painted over the naacp plans to meet with the county supervisor. margaret of a colgan who

represents that district to discuss removing we're covering the mural were see where that goes. meanwhile, there are new details now and that valentine's day stabbing death. it's antennas are san san jose. santana row. the victim was a 15 year-old boy. police say they originally responded to reports of a fight and found that injured teenager. he was taken to hospital here he died of his injuries. no arrests have been made yet. this is san jose's 3rd homicide of the year. in san francisco. the department of health help more than 450 unhoused people get treatment for behavioral health and housing in 2024. that was done via their street care team. the department stating that they were there are still committed to providing care and support for the unhoused with medical needs. well, san francisco celebrated the year of the snake on saturday with its big annual parade. the colorful and lively event was one of the largest celebrations of chinese culture outside of asia and

back at 5.13. here are 4 things to know today. san jose police officgr was injured while trying to break up a brawl saturday night. >> it happened in the downtown area right near santa clara and san pedro streets. several people were arrested. the injured officer is expected to be okay. >> meanwhile, police arrested a man in san pablo accused of shooting into someone's home. police say the suspect lived inside the victim's backyard shed when searching that shed, they discovered a rifle and bullets. police say the man is

the convicted felon and was not allowed to own guns. 4 people are without a home this morning after a fire tore through a house in burlingame. took firefighters several hours to contain the flames. no injuries were reported. and the chp arrested 2 people in contra costa county accused of having more than 125 pounds of marijuana in their car. that will hap en this weekend. officers say they had pulled over the driver for speeding and then spotted garbage bags stuffed with marijuana. the driver and the passenger been arrested now on drug possession charges. >> and good monday morning to hopefully it's off to a fairly smooth start so far. mother nature is not going over complicate any things for us. as we get this week started. so nyce invitation to get out there. at least once the sun comes we're looking outside from the east bay hills. some mid-level clouds are above the bridge level. you're doing fine, visibility wise, but today is not going to be a

crystal clear one necessarily. you will see those peaks of sunshine between the clouds, though, shower activity. well, to the north, up towards the oregon border, nothing making its way down our direction. winds are also nice and calm. so all is clear, is good to go as we do kick off this workweek, this low pressure area sitting to the north and west of us is about to descend towards our neck of the woods come wednesday. and that brings us our loan opportunity of a few showers right in the middle of the week on wednesday itself. any sort of shower activity from this descending? the low is going to be relatively light and brief for that matter. here's wednesday morning at 05:30am, some showers drifting up north into mendocino county dropping into the rest of the bay towards midmorning to the middle afternoon. again, just light sprinkles for us with much more significant rainfall up in those north coast counties. and you can see just how much rain areas like eureka will be getting. well, that bay area may just see a couple drops of water. again, that's all on wednesday. up

until that point, skies will be dry and things will be pretty comfortable. the city today just below the 60 degree mark getting into the upper 50's mid-fifties at the coast peninsula. also much like the city just below that 60 degree mark this afternoon saying carlos at 59, same in redwood city, south bay, temperatures rising into the low 60's in san jose, santa clara and sunnyvale. much the same from hayward on up through oakland, hitting 60 degrees today. walnut creek. you'll be at 61 with concord at 62. similar up in napa and youngsville getting up to 62 degrees today. a look ahead show today for your president's day. a nice one to venture outside. i know it's a three-day weekend for a lot of folks in. hey, good one to get out therand maybe enjoy that walk around the neighborhood tomorrow. even warmer, mostly sunny with highs in the mid 60's. slim chance of showers on wednesday. and then we're really smooth sailing the last weekend of february saturday and sunday looking nice could even see some low 70's for a

few of us. roadways this morning doing all right. of course, that being president stay means that traffic just going to look different today is probably going to be a lot more of us at the grocery stores or at your favorite hiking trails. if you're west of us, making our tracks across the bridges and you can see that reflected in the rhoads. nobody at the richmond center fell bridge and hardly anyone at the golden gates. james. >> john, thank you. 5.17 is the time search and rescue efforts have been suspended now for a man who fell from san francisco pier 32 saturday night. you have a live look or this is actually video from the citizen app showing the area that's being searched a second person. the woman was rescued and hospitalized but first responders couldn't find the man who fell in. no details have been released about the identities of either person. oakland fire officials are investigating the cause of a warehouse fire that happened saturday night right near the fruitvale bart station along that intersection of 40th in san leandro street. >> crews were able to get it.

>> under control fairly quickly. luckily nobody was hurt. cal fire meantime has stated there started releasing some new maps that outline the severity of fire danger in communities across california. this comes after governor newsom signed an executive order accelerating the release of those maps, grass valley and truckee saw major jump in severity as did auburn, juliet smith has the story. >> approximately 1.4 million new acres of land have been added to the 2 higher tiers of fire hazard severity. according to a press release from the governor's office, cal fire drew this map based on vegetation. data, topography, weather and climate change patterns to calculate the wildfire probability and intensity. the new executive order will require an ember resistant. so within 5 feet of structures located in the highest fire severity zones. officials say this is the key to stopping

wildfires from spreading to homes. >> many people say we've got a wildfire crisis in the state. i like to say we actually have our admission crisis in the state. this means the removal of all brush vegetation and flammable fencing, gravel and concrete should be used instead of park or combustible greenery. and if an amber lands within the first >> 5 feet of your house and can ignite ne. when the education it can get into the eves. it lands on the roof. if you've got that debris because we haven't cleared you better than your roof. and if the numbers are hard enough. it will ignite. so the idea is to be able to create this buffer of defensible space. some note that replacing existing fencing like this could cost a pretty penny, but a former fire chief says when you consider the big picture, it's fair question should really be. >> the relative cost of implementing zone 0 versus the cost of rebuilding existing homes will have 3 years to

complete this task. >> what we what we're asking those people to do is to, you know, take one bite of the apple of the time. but cal fire says all new construction in these areas must comply with regulations. affective immediately question still remains about how this will affect homeowner insurance. >> which is continue to break. california homeowner bank accounts year after year. officials say compliance with stricter safety regulations could eventually reduce the cost. if the homeowner is going to demonstrate to the insurance companies that they are making significant efforts to reduce their risk, in my view, they have to be rewarded for that effort. once local jurisdictions received the maps, they have 30 days to make them public and 120 days to adopt them. well, that was julian smith reporting. the california highway patrol, by the way, held the women's hiring seminar, reaching out to recruits to fill up. >> about 700 vacancies from officers to dispatchers over the weekend. right now, only

>> will for your health this morning? the fda approved a new drug to treat diabetes. its name is mayor a log. and it's apparently a rapid acting insulin that meant to lower your blood sugar spikes. the drug needs to be injected 5 to 10 minutes before a meal in the stomach or upper arms. a bird flu vaccine and now has conditional approval from the department of agriculture. it's happening as avian flu continues to wipe out flocks of poultry, driving up egg prices. the company behind the vaccine says it's been working with government officials and they say the vaccination of commercial poultry is up to the national regulators. will

2 food delivery competitors are set to square off in court. uber technologies. the parent company of uber eats is suing doordash over what it says are anti-competitive practices in the lawsuit. doordash is accused of threatening to force higher costs on restaurants that offer uber eats delivery. uber reportedly filed the suit after hearing from restaurant owners who felt pressured by doordash doordash argues the lawsuit has no merit and that uber is unable to offer merchants or consumers better delivery choices. mexico's government is preparing a lawsuit now against google and other big tech companies, which are now showing gulf of america on their apps. mexico's president argues that it creates confusion because the map shows different names in different countries. the change followed an executive order by president trump. google also says it will change the name of denali. national park in alaska back to its original name of mount mckinley. it was changed to denali at the request of u.s.

and hoping we can keep that only 8 minutes across the bay bridge right now. 12 minutes across the san mateo bridge, looking at our other spans, like the richmond center fell in the golden gate. there is no fog, no rain, no winds. >> and traffic kind of like that, james. all right. thank you very much, john. >> it's 5.30, in the south bay. we have some new details emerging about a deadly stabbing that happened friday in san jose. we now know the stabbing victim was a 15 year-old boy kron four's will tran live for us in the south bay with the latest. will. >> and james, the san jose police department, they know who this person was, but they're not releasing his name at this particular time, referring to other agencies to allow them to release the name. this all went down and santana row on valentine's day night. i want to shtw you the video. this is around 7.20, a night when the 15 year-old boy was here according to the san jose police department. there

were multiple suspects who came after him attacked him. you have to imagine it was very busy, especially on date night on valentine's day. so thousands of people were at santana row and plenty of witnesses not to mention surveillance cameras that i'm sure they spent the weekend looking over the footage. but so far this morning, no arrests in the case. they are still searching for the suspects to the point where they'd have not been able to release the descriptions of who they are looking for this morning. the 15 year-old boy, we don't have any information on him at this particular time, including a possible motive. as soon as we find out, we will let you know. but again, santana row this morning, very quiet. but i've been here many times. you are never alone, especially at nighttime and especially on valentine's day night when so many people are here. so i'm sure they're still talking to witnesses to try to find out more information to pass along to the public. this person is san jose's 3rd homicide victim

of this very early year. back to you. all right. we'll thank you very much. to other bay area headlines now. this week marks one year since the brutal murder of a panel woman right in front of her little boy. >> police described the shocking shooting as a deadly case of domestic violence and kron four's. joey horta is following that story for us live in pinole this morning. joey. >> james, brittany lake, this is being remembered by her family as a loving mother. and they're hoping her senseless death will serve as a warning for others about the dangers of domestic violence. she was just 30 years old us before her college graduation before. police say her ex jeffrey kendall shot and killed brittany with an assault weapon. their little boy, liam, just 4 years old at the time witnessed his mother being shot, according to the family after a manhunt, kendall was arrested in santa cruz. brett knese professor and fellow students at diablo

fleeing crime scene according to police. he's been charged with homicide and he is due back in court this friday. we're live up in joey horta kron. 4 news. thank you. 5.34 is the time. >> despite the crackdown on undocumented immigrants by the trump administration, deportation arrest numbers are reportedly down. the government has boosted resources but ice is struggling to keep up with the administration's goals. the number of daily arrests has fallen from 800 a day in late january to fewer than 600 this month. governor gavin newsom says he will veto a bill that would prevent the state prison system from cooperating with ice. capitol correspondent eytan wallace explains. >> well, i can not stress in not. it is extremely rare for the governor to weigh in on a bill before it reaches his desk. but as pertains to this legislation calling on the state prison system not to cooperate with ice. the governor did way and hoping to send a strong message. he will veto it. so the california

prison system cooperate with ice and federal immigration enforcement. that is the very issue is something bill 15 tried to get out when it was originally authored in december. >> in most cases it would have prevented the california department of corrections and rehabilitation or cdcr from cooperating with ice in several ways. chief among them, it would have barred the state prison system from keeping someone in custody when ice requests the cdcr to do just that the bill would have also prevented the state prison system from providing ice with the prisoners release date and from transferring prisoners to directly to ice custody. but in a rare move before the bill even had its first committee hearing, governor newsom's office announced he will veto a be 15 or a bill like it if it reaches his desk that the governor's office directing us to this message. the governor wrote when he vetoed a similar bill last year. newsom writing then, quote, i believe current law strikes the right balance on limiting interaction to support community trust and cooperation between law enforcement and local communities. for this reason,

i cannot sign this bill. i think the governor is doing the right thing in this instance and i disagree with him on a regular basis. that's the reaction from republican us. i'm a member, cho patterson. he believes the state should cooperate with ice hole after poll shows that people are concerned about crime. >> why would we possibly do not work with our federal partners on immigration enforcement for criminals were talking about criminals, not a person here hardworking. we're talking about people who work in prison. the governor's office notes since newsom took office in 2019. the state prison system has notified and coordinated with ice to transfer 10,588 prisoners into their custody prisoners. the governor's office says including murderers, rapists and violent offenders. they should be deported in our state should be working with the federal government to get them back out of this country. so continue to victimize people in this state. as for the future of ab 15, its main author, carson democratic assemblymember mike gibson

>> well, here are 4 things to know today. search and rescue efforts have been suspended now for the man who fell from san francisco is pierre 32 saturday night. a second person, a woman was rescued and hospitalized. but first responders couldn't find the man who fell in. no details have been released about the identity of either. oakland. fire officials are investigating the cause of a warehouse fire near the fruitvale bart station. crews were able to get it under control fairly quickly. and luckily nobody was hurt. >> san francisco department of

health reporting that more than 450 unhoused people received treatment for behavioral health and housing in 2024, the department stating that they are committed to providing care and support for unhoused people with medical needs. and hearts in san francisco sculpture has been given to the city of vacaville, the bright red hardship sculptures. you can see there was installed downtown at the corner of main and parker streets. this comes to a partnership between the san francisco general hospital foundation, genentech and the city. well, there were 2 small avalanches on the resort side of palisades tahoe. they happened friday morning, one in the enchanted forest area and the other near olympic lady ski patrol in search and rescue crews went were sent out. they say no serious injuries were reported. so little silver lining there, john. >> yeah, all that fresh snowfall thursday into early friday definitely made for a nice weekend up in the sierra

convicted felon so he wasn't allowed on those counts. 4 people are without a home this morning after a fire tore through this house in burlingame. crews say the fire started saturday morning on canyon road. those flames spread to cardboard boxes inside the house producing a lot of heavy smoke. it took firefighters several hours to contain the flames. luckily, no injuries were reported. the chp has arrested 2 people in contra costa county accused of having more than 125 pounds of marijuana in their car. the arrest happened over the weekend. officers say they pulled over a driver for speeding and then spotted garbage bags stuffed with marijuana inside the driver and the passenger were arrested on drug possession charges. governor newsom, meanwhile, has issued an emergency proclamation in santa cruz county as recovery efforts continue there for the partial wharf collapse that they've been dealing with. this comes after a december storm knocked part of the pier into the water. the wharf was
