>> news at 6. >> good morning and thanks for waking up with us. i'm darya and i'm james starting off this monday. more on this presidents day. happy presidents day. i don't expect to be too many people on the roads. no should be pretty quiet out there. we would like some good weather. you have the day off? right after, you know, you have that chance to sleep i hope you are doing that a little bit. this president state once the sun comes up, it is going to be nice and a half with look at the time highs in the 50's to low 60's. >> right now we're seeing outside the embarcadero. no fog, no cloud cover, no wind. it's pretty calm out there to get this morning started. >> we do have fog up in the north bay, though, and a mix of some mid-level clouds drifting across the bay area times today will make for a mix of mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies. once the sun does come up right now, fog is limited to around santa rosa. so watch your travel on 101, elsewhere, though, including our bridges mountain passes, things are actually looking

really good. lot of people heading back from the sierra after a weekend of skiing. good for that as well. 50's to 40's for most of our current temperatures fairly mild morning. all in all the and as we move into the afternoon today, daytime highs are going to stay in the 50's to low 60's tomorrow. going to be actually a little bit warmer. i'll be breaking down the rest of the week's forecast as we continue back to you. all right. let's check the roads real quick on this presidents day holiday. >> we'ri expecting it to be pretty light all morning long. and that's certainly the case at the moment. 06:00am. and you've got just an 8 minute ride to get from oakland into san francisco. your san mateo bridge drive looking good. 12 minutes to get from hayward out to foster city richmond, sandra fell bridge. one set of headlights. there's another couple. that's probably how it's going to be all day long. 7 minutes to get across that span. and then lastly, just a trickle of traffic on southbound 101. this folks head for marin county into san francisco to 20 minute ride from nevado to the toll plaza. 61 right now in the south bay. new details are coming out now about a deadly stabbinu that

happened friday in san jose. we now know the stabbing victim was a 15 year-old boy. >> kron four's will tran on the story for us in san jose. will. >> but james, what we do know are the suspects as they are still searching for the suspects behind all of this. this all went down in santana row, a very posh shopping center in the south bay. let me show you the video. there were thousands of people out at that particular time. we are talking valentine's day night date night with so many people out in santana row. but it did not stop the suspects from stabbing the victim by the time officers arrived to the scene. the suspects were long gone. the person was still alive. they try to save his life, rushed him to the hospital. but ultimately the injuries simply too much for him to survive his injuries. there are plenty of surveillance cameras in this particular area. so they spent the weekend looking at surveillance footage. also

talking to witnesses. but at this point, they don't have any solid descriptions to pass along to the public to help them track down whoever is responsible for the stabbing. we do know that the 15 year-old is san jose's 3rd homicide victim. this very young gear. thanks as 602. right now let's go to the east bay san leandro. police were involved in a shooting that happened in ashland. >> they were investigating last night around 8.30. they were looking a vehicular assault. and during that investigation, there was a shooting involving the san leandro police. the suspect was taken into custody and no injuries were reported. search and rescue efforts have been suspended now for a man who fell from san francisco pier. 32 saturday night. this is citizen app. video of the

bridge there. a second person. a woman was rescued and hospitalized. first responders could never find them and they looked. we have no details on their identity or what happened. >> well, now some other local news groups in silicon valley are calling for the removal of the mural at the palo alto branch of the santa clara county superior court. the naacp, san jose silicon valley, along with the but loney tribe says that the mural displace calling imagery denigrating native americans. however, the court can't make a decision without approval from the county. and at this point, the county says that they have taken the position at this point that the mural is a historical piece of art that cannot be painted over. the naacp does plan to meet with county supervisors to talk about this further. and the south bay. now, the santa clara county office of education is planning layoffs. the office says that workers will be notified of their dismissal by march. 15th. the

office hasn't said how many jobs will be cut. officials say the layoffs are because of cuts in federal funding and expiring grants. this comes as the office look for potential evidence of misspending under former superintendent mary and a want the board of education voted to fire dewan in october. and that sparked backlash from state lawmakers and educators and educators and independent audit by the board was turned over to the santa clara county district attorney in december. >> well, it was a fun filled all-star weekend at the chase center. take a look at some of the video freeway have from the weekend. all kinds of events they've wrapped up now. but a lot of people enjoyed obviously outside and inside the chase center and the big stars showed off. they did. yes, sporting events, skills contest, slam dunk. 3 point. all that fun stuff leading up to the big all-star game sunday and kron. 4 sports director scott reese takes a look at it all. >> the nba all-star game here in san francisco. the

culmination of a weekend's worth of fun and entertainment. you had the best basketball players on the planet all gathered under one roof. the game did not disappoint with steph curry being the kobe bryant, most valuable player. and we got our storybook ending. >> as a celebration of a lot of great things happen in basketball to be playing with these guys for as long as we have light. it's obviously our spots come out, put on a show and i thank them for, you know, help do that and are and and go to state because, you know, a lot histories have been out here, but the competition and the camaraderie and the legacy that we operate is what it's all about. have to be a part of that celebration. it was way more. >> like fun, chaos. and i thought it would be there's so many moving parts and, you know, it takes like in ba is really good at like putting stuff like this together. so many things behind the scenes that, you know, don't get talked about enough that go through the weekend, which was really special and cool to just be a part of that. obviously just being back home with my family and friends is

also the bay area as a whole. >> a celebration for the end of a successful weekend in san francisco. the nba all-star weekend taking over the bay for the first time in 25 years. and you guys favorite part about the weekend. so just the festivities, the vibes, the coach of people lined up early to go through security and check themselves into the chase center for the all-star games. it's the first year they're hosting a mini tournament. but those tickets inside they cost an arm and a leg is good. that's been really good. actually, countless fans just like this couple from fresno drove hours to be here in the moment, taking it all i always grew up or at lemon bay area big giants niners fan. actually grew up not really watching basketball, but the gentle warrior games to come on after the giants games. so brother grew up watching the warrior games and became aware everything was a celebration. some fans were upset. big games weren't blasted on the big screen at the front of the

[ambient noise] >> we're back at 6.13, here for things to know today. the san jose police officer was injured while trying to break up a brawl saturday night. it happened in the downtown area right near santa clara and san pedro streets. several people were arrested in the end. that injured officer should be okay. police arrested a man in san pablo accused of shooting into somebody's home. so

police say the suspect actually lived inside the victim's backyard shed. and when searching that shed, they discovered rifle and bullets. you see a picture of it there. police say the man is a convicted felon and is not allowed to own guns. 4 people are without a home this morning after a fire tore through a house in burlingame. it took firefighters several hours to put it out. luckily, nobody was hurt. and the chp arrested 2 people in contra costa county for having more than 125 pounds of marijuana in their car. so officers say they pulled over the car over the weekend for speeding and then spotted the garbage bags looking inside. they found are all stuffed up the driver and the passenger been arrested now on drug possession charges. >> and looking outside morning at the coastline, it's the same view that you're getting pretty much everywhere. we are seeing a little bit of low cloud cover. here's something to note, though. you may notice sunrise a little bit earlier on this morning. we

are seeing some of our for sunrise is before 07:00am officially. so the days are starting to get a little bit longer as we near the end of february skies out there are partly cloudy. that's the way they're going to stay today. a few passing clouds here and there across the bay area, a few peeks of sunshine in the middle, though today's actually going to be the coolest day of this week's forecast. so that shows you where we're going winds, not much of a concern this morning. low pressure sitting to the north and west of us is actually going to skirt right past the region as we move into wednesday. so today and tomorrow are dry days. wednesday is our low chance of any sort of precip in this forecast. and it's really going to be north coast centric. we are looking at just a few sprinkles possible middle of the day on wednesday here for the bay area moves out pretty quickly. and then that dry trend of weather does continue. how much rain will we see will for your weekend? that will exceed well over an inch mendocino. well, over half an inch by the time you get to santa rosa, you see

less than a 10th of an inch. and that's a trend that will also see in the bay area. so just a few light sprinkles on wednesday and then we're in the clear again. today's daytime highs in the upper 50's for the peninsula, including san francisco as well as areas from sfo southward into burlingame in redwood city. a few low 60's, though, in the south bay as well as across the east bay, san jose. you land at 61 this afternoon. pleasanton dublin at 60 degrees. hayward, 61 oakland on up to richmond, also rising into the low 60's. something you also see in the north bay low 60's for your daytime highs. as for next 7 days, even with that interruption with a few showers on wednesday. this is generally a warming trend of weather, especially leading towards the weekend with daytime highs forryour final weekend of february rising as warm as the low 70's. back to you. >> president's day monday, not surprising. the traffic is light as most people are

sleeping in with the day off of work. here's your bay bridge toll plaza camera showing just a handful of headlights heading into san francisco. 8 minutes to cross that span. so that was a little little like most people are sleeping in one of day. all james, keep doing the draft. that's the bitter 30 minutes to get across the san mateo bridge this morning on westbound 92. >> and the richmond, sandra fell bridge just 7 minutes to get from the east bay over to marin county. and for those in the north bay working their way southbound, i want to one heading into san francisco. it really is a quick just 20 minute drive from the battle all the way down into san francisco. >> back in the news for your health this morning, the fda has approved a new drug to treat diabetes. >> it's called mayor a log and apparently its rapid acting insulin that's meant to lower your blood sugar spikes. the drug were told needs to be ejected 5 to 10 minutes before a meal either in the stomach or the arm and should level out your sugar spike 6.17, right now, san francisco has expanded the united nations

skate. >> plus, as city leaders and you can see there, some skaters gathered to unveil the 2100 square feet that they have in this new space and its downtown. it was paid for by the partnership that they have with the skate park project and converse. it's a redesigned and so it'll it while it first opened when it was redesigned in 2023. at about 2 million dollars that earned those old signs that say no skateboarding here in san francisco, the department of health help more than 450 homeless people get treatment for behavioral health and with housing in 2024, this was via the street care team. the department says it's committed to providing support and help for the homeless with their medical and mental health needs. >> well, oakland fire officials are investigating the cause of this warehouse fire. it happened saturday night right here. they fruitvale bart station, which is right along the intersection of 40th in san leandro street crews were able to get it under control fairly

quickly. they say nobody was hurt. the investigation into the cause is ongoing. 6.18, right now. and do you live in a dangerous fire zone? there's some new maps that are out now show the severity. >> of the fire risk in certain areas all across california. and this comes after the governor signed an executive order to accelerate the release of these maps. turns out grass valley and truckee saw a major jump in severity as did auburn, juliet smith has the story. >> approximately 1.4 million new acres of land have been added to the 2 higher tiers of fire hazard severity. according to a press release from the governor's office, cal fire drew this map based on vegetation. data, topography, weather and climate change patterns to calculate the wildfire probability and intensity. the new executive order will require an ember resistant. so within 5 feet of structures located in the highest fire severity zones. officials say this is the key to stopping

wildfires from spreading to homes. >> many people say we've got a wildfire crisis in the state. i like to say we actually have our admission crisis in the state. this means the removal of all brush vegetation and flammable fencing, gravel and concrete should be used instead of or combustible greenery. and if an amber lands within the first >> 5 feet of your house and can ignite. ne. when the education it can get into eves. it lands on the roof. if you've got that debris because we haven't cleared you better than your roof. and if the numbers are hard enough. it will ignite. so the idea is to be able to create this buffer of defensible space. some note that replacing existing fencing like this could cost a pretty penny, but a former fire chief says when you consider the big picture, it's fair question should really be. >> the relative cost of implementing zone 0 versus the cost of rebuilding existing

homes will have 3 years to complete this task. >> what we what we're asking those people to do is to, you know, take one bite of the apple of time. but cal fire says all new construction in these areas must comply with regulations. affective immediately question still remains about how this will affect homeowner insurance. >> which is continue to break. california homeowner bank accounts year after year. officials say compliance with stricter safety regulations could eventually reduce the cost. if the homeowner is going to demonstrate to the insurance companies that they are making significant efforts to reduce their risk, in my view, they have to be rewarded for that effort. once local jurisdictions received the maps, they have 30 days to make them public and 120 days to adopt them. now, as juliet smith reporting, the california highway patrol held a women's hiring seminar were on to something else. this is where >> recruits are asked to come. they want to hire more women. so they have 700 vacancies

your license requesting documents. >> ordering the placements or registering your vehicles. so there you go. also in the news today, a man accused of shooting a driver on interstate 80 in solano county has been arrested. chp says the suspect had this loaded ghost gun on him when he was taken into custody. police say was 45 year-old robert small, who fired shots on westbound 80 right near milk farm road on wednesday, hitting another driver. that driver called police and provided a description that ultimately led the chp to the suspect. small is now facing charges of attempted murder and assault. >> police say her daughter was shot and killed here in the east bay. and now grieving mother is sending out a

>> 6.29 right now and we're checking out the weather. things have turned yeah, looking great out there. as you can see behind us, relatively clear we've got john with our presidents day forecast. hey, john. yeah, it is looking so much different than last week's forecast was one that was just talking about more rain ahead of us. we're not really talking a lot of that in this week's forecast. just one day with a few light showers on wednesday. really looking outside at sfo. today's probably going to be a busy travel day. lot of people leaving starts weekend and lunar new year parade. >> and some people coming back today because it was a three-day weekend with today being presidents day. good travel weather today. we are seeing dry skies across the bay, a few clouds and only a little bit of fog. fog is mostly concentrated up around santa rosa. we do have some low clouds that will be

drifting across the bay today. so not a perfectly clear one. and it is going to be a little on the cool side, suffering the jackets with you all in all, though, pleasant, winter weather 40's for most of our current temperatures in this afternoon. most of us are going to stay in the 50's, although a fair share of low 60's on the map and are increasingly clear skies. so a decent amount of sunshine. >> all right, john, a quick check of the roads. it's not really a commute check because it is a holiday. so a lot of folks have the day off. that's why we've got really light traffic here at 6.30. and that's just a slow stream of cars with a lot of gaps between making their way to san francisco. 8 minutes to cross the bay bridge right now, the san mateo bridge looking good. 13 minutes to get across that stretch of 92 and on to the peninsula. richmond, sandra fell bridge building, but obviously very light lighter than a normal workday. 7 minutes to get over into burnet county. and then lastly, we've got our golden gate bridge camera right at the toll plaza. looking at cars streaming southbound at

marin county into san francisco. 20 minutes to get from highway 37 in novato down to the camera here at the toll plaza 6.31. right now. and this is a kron. 4 exclusive. this week marks one year since the killing of up no woman right in front of her little boy. it was brutal. police say it was a case of domestic violence. and this morning her family wants to share. >> and important message. kron four's joy. hard live for us in pinole with that. joey. >> james and darya brittany lake. this is being remembered as a loving mother by her family. they're hoping that her senseless death will be a reminder of warning for those out there who may become victims of domestic violence. that this is a very serious issue. you need to paying attention to it. just 30 years old us before her graduation from diablo college. reno police say that her ex jeffrey kendall, broke into her home and shot brady in the head with an assault weapon after a manhunt, kendall was arrested in santa cruz. a little boy, liam, just 4 years old at the

time witnessed his mother being killed, according to police for the first time we're hearing from britney's mother kathy. >> they all the things we miss about you know, her kiss her high. i everything re >> i will love and i love you. britney. >> britney's mother sharing her family's painful story for 2 reasons. first to keep her memory alive and second to warn others about the dangers of domestic violence. more than half of women killed by gun violence killed by family members or partners. according to the national domestic violence hotline. if you or someone, you know, needs help, you can call their 24 7 hotline. kendall was caught on camera fleeing the crime scene according to police. he is being held in jail. still this morning, an entire year after the shooting. he's due back in court. this friday was charged with homicide. live in joey horta kron. 4 news. thank you,

joe. tragic story. thank you, joy. >> the alameda county sheriff's office is asking the community they're trying to solve a valentine's day homicide that happened. 41 years ago on valentine's day. 84 year-old christian bus linger was killed in his home on dunn road in hayward in 1984. he was last seen by neighbors and friends. 2 days before he died. >> well, san jose police officer was hurt while trying to break up this brawl saturday night. it was in the downtown area right near santa clara and san pedro streets. officers say they were attacked. that's when they called for backup. and this is video from the citizen app showing the crowd of people who watched as dozens of police cars blocked off the road. several people were arrested and those injured. the injured officer was treated and is expected to be okay. the chp arrested 2 people in contra costa county for having more than 125 pounds of marijuana in their car. police say they pulled

over the driver over the weekend for speeding and that's when i spotted these garbage bags full of marijuana inside the driver and passenger have been arrested and are now facing drug possession charges. it's 6.34, in 4 people are without a howe this morning because a fire destroyed this one. as you can see in burlingame, it started. >> saturday morning, home is on canyon road and the flames spread to cardboard boxes that were inside the house. and that's what created all this heavy smoke. firefighters spent several hours to get it under control. nobody was hurt. california insurance commissioner ricardo, lara, has rejected a request from state farm state farm wanted to hike the rates. an average of 22% and they requested this because they said they were in dire financial situation following the california wildfires that happened in socal. laura says state farm did not meet the burden of proof for this. 22 1% rate hike and requested a meeting later this month. and so they will work out more from there.

>> well, governor newsom has issued an emergency proclamation in santa cruz county as recovery efforts continue for that. partial wharf collapse. this came after a december storm knocked down part of that pier into the water. the wharf was closed off yesterday because another storm brought high surf to the area. you can see parts of the pier dangling off off the pier surface. there. the county is set to get help from the office of emergency services. now. a bird flu vaccine now has conditional approval from the department of agriculture. it's happening as the avian flu bird flu continues to wipe out. flocks of poultry, driving up egg prices. the company behind the vaccine says it's been working with government officials and that the vaccine vaccination of commercial poultry is up to national regulatory authorities will see if they give the green light. >> 6.36 right now and san francisco celebrated the year of the snake over the weekend

on saturday. they had this big parade. lot of colors there. lot of energy and excitement. it's. >> the largest celebration of chinese culture outside of asia. kron four's. lindsey ford brings us some of the sights and sounds. >> crowds packed along san francisco's market street on saturday to celebrate the year of the snake. >> the annual chinese new year parade featured a marching band dragons and people walking on stilts wearing colorful garments. >> san francisco's officials also took part in the event. families like the one of amelia, like great arriving hours early for a prime time viewing spot. my parents brought me within susie that festival. i'm i'm curious to see what it the news. and it was just like, i don't know. i thought rate really immersed the festival. i i like the costs. how it was done. it was really good. >> is there have you know, we supporting the community, simon and right go. kwan brought their daughter to the parade the game because i wanted to come impulse and i
