>> thanks for joining us here at 11 o'clock. i'm noelle bellow and i'm dan thorn. a busy road back open tonight in san jose after a major car crash sent 2 people to the hospital. it happened on all that expressway just north of brenham lane kron. four's joc moment reports. >> it was a multi vehicle car accident that shut down out of the expressway in both directions here on tuesday. the accident has many neighbors concerned that the next time that this happens, it will be deadly. home surveillance camera footage capturing the moment of impact. it shows a car heading southbound on out express way kicking up dirt from the center median before slamming into the car headed northbound. the crash happened just after one 30 in the afternoon and police arrived within just a couple minutes. so we knew that something

really significant had happened and one person suffered minor injuries and the other is in serious condition as of tuesday night, michele ferrari came to see the damage for herself. very sound. >> you know, we further down in the albany area this you can get some bad driving up in this for certain. she says she's not surprised by the crash. people that people don't respect the speed limit. >> and they. stepped in and out of lanes this particular section about what the expressway is part of a high priority corridor. according to the city of san jose's vision, 0 plan aimed at reducing the number of traffic fatalities in san jose in 2024. san jose had 49 traffic deaths 2023. >> there were 47. the truth is we're not treating this as a crisis. >> we're treating this is a fact blocks and we need to look forward to seeing how we can deal with that with the resources that we have not seagulls streets advocate and says large expressways like alamuddin are treated like highways. wasn't designed

saying when we design our highways and as a result, it has a lot of the speeds of highways with the safety measures, not a city planner. i don't know what they would need to do it would be nice if they found a way to do that. the road reopened around 6 in the evening. >> and for neighbors like ferrari, they hope something is done soon to slow the historic rate of traffic accidents in san jose. i don't know what they would need to do. maybe more frequent stop lights along the way particular section about. but an expressway is actually one that the city of san jose says needs improving. according to the 2025 draft plan from the city of san jose's vision, 0 goals. >> this section about expressway, specifically the fox where the intersection is slated to receive grant money from the county and the city to improve street lights reporting here in san jose jacmel. but kron 4 news. >> a south bay deputies in critical condition tonight after he was injured in a head-on crash. the santa clara county sheriff's office confirms deputy daniel arevalo

got into a crash while driving to work on valentine's day. the peace officers research association of california has set up this online fundraiser to help the deputy and his family. according to the page, arevalo has been with the santa clara county sheriff's office since 2020. he has undergone multiple surgeries since this weekend. the sheriff's office says they're still getting more information about what happened. >> congressman eric swalwell back in the east bay tonight meeting with his constituents for the first time since president donald trump took office again this week. swalwell has openly blamed in criticize the president for the recent major plane crashes. kron 4 sarah stinson spoke with the representative and has this report >> nearly one month into president donald trump's second term. congressman eric swalwell encouraging his constituents to stand strong at a town hall in union city tuesday night. our job in government is to protect

people. and right now they don't feel safe. they see cuts to the faa and plane crash the latest plane crash happening monday when a delta flight from minneapolis crash landed at the toronto pearson airport flipping upside down on the runway. all 80 people survived. but 21 passengers were hospitalized. 48 hours prior to people died in a small plane crash in georgia. >> and last month, the deadliest u.s. air disaster in 15 years happened in dc when an army helicopter collided midair with an alaska airlines flight sending both into the potomac river killing 67 people. president trump has publicly faulted federal diversity and inclusion efforts specifically with air traffic controllers. however, swalwell places the blame on trump writing on x, quote, no president has had more plane crashes in their first month in office. then donald trump, president trump. >> needs to tell us that he's going to take responsibility.

is the chief executive of this country to make us safer and the skies because he seems to want to blame everything on dei. he blamed the crash over the potomac on dei. but to me, if donald trump says something was caused by dei, it means didn't even investigate because he just uses it. now as an alibi, it's not just the faa seeing cuts. >> elon musk's department of government efficiency or doge has laid off thousands of employees from several agencies. 14 democratic states challenge musk's authority on this as well as his access. >> to government data, but a federal judge refused to block musk on tuesday, but they're not in favor any transparency. and so right now, people want to know >> what the is. elon musk, you know, doing with our data? you do we still have privacy role? tells me one of the main issues is office works on is immigration. he says many people in his district are living in fear over ice raids

and deportation. >> he says he works on 1000 immigration cases per year and town halls like this one in union city. keep his fight alive in dc i'm sara stinson reporting back to you. >> new at 11 superior court of alameda county workers are set to go on strike county wide beginning tomorrow morning. according to the seiu 10, 21 workers union after months of bargaining in the expiration of their contract at the end of last year, court workers will hit the picket lines at 06:00am courtroom clerks across criminal civil in juvenile justice divisions will be striking. union says there is an under staffing problem and workers are pressed to perform tasks. they are not trained to do. the strike could halt trials and delay hearings throughout the alameda county justice system. we will, of course, follow any fallout from this on air and online. >> taking a live look from our mount tam cam. as you can see,

a little bit of moisture in the air tonight as we await some real rain. yeah. are we going to say we're going to see some light showers? not going to be a goalie washer. >> we might see a couple of scattered light showers overnight tonight and tomorrow morning. and then it looks like things are going to taper off as we head toward tomorrow afternoon. so >> want make a little bit of a comeback out there right now. beautiful look out toward the bay bridge. it's dry there right now. but we have seen a couple of scattdred light showers showing up in the north bay. temperatures cooling off. but with the cloud cover kind of holding up a big you've got some low to about the mid 50's outside right now. but yeah, there you go. the doppler radar. get a little active right now. you can see a couple of pop-up showers around the bay area and some of those make its way further to the north. and that's kind of what we're going to see. just some light to rush hours making their way through the bay area tonight and tomorrow morning. but it could affect the commute early on is we're going to see the brunt of that moisture come through by tomorrow morning. and then by the afternoon, turning to some partly cloudy skies. you'll see it right here as we head to the night

tonight. just some light showers begin to move into the state. few snow showers over the high country. but then by tomorrow afternoon, things begin to clear out and well looks like some much better weather coming our way. in fact, could be talking about some spring-like weather. we'll have more details on that coming up a few minutes. thank you, lawrence. tonight, a north bay family remembering a loving husband and friend who died in a plane crash in alaska. santa rosa native andrew gonzalez was among 10 people killed when that plane. >> what he was in went down earlier this month. tonight, kron four's auntie ford spoke to his wife and friends who say they're devastated by the loss to joins us now in the newsroom with more. lindsay. >> yeah, this is been a heartbreaking loss for gonzales, his wife, whitney and loved ones. they say that there is nothing that could ever replace his spirit in their lives. >> someone that's very hard to define so many things. whitney bowers, the widow of andrew gonzales, says he was selfless

soul crushing everyone's at a loss. it is unimaginable. what what is our current reality? gonzales, who is from santa rosa was one of 10 people killed in a plane crash in alaska earlier this month. the small commuter plane went down in the bering sea gonzalez who worked as a power generation technician had to travel a lot to small remote areas. so i was at home waiting to come from. and landing from that flight. got a feeling check to flight tracker. there is no new information on it. and i knew something was wrong. bowers never got the call from her husband, andrew. his remains along the others was found by search crews days later. whitney and andrew both grew up in santa rosa and got engaged in moved to alaska back in 2022. >> whitney's close with gonzales is older. sister francisco are gonna who is also grieving, though he's might be my baby brother. this.

>> part of our family. all feeling it. all of us. that's all as his co-workers, michael burden, jared beaudoin also feel the pain. michael's favorite thing to do with andrew was having game night. he definitely had a sense of humor that could make anybody laugh and you never knew it was coming. >> he was a blast to work with jared help gonzales get his job in alaska. he lived a life full. he loved and he captured the hearts of everybody. i mean, i don't think i've ever met anybody. >> who didn't like him? and gonzales is mother-in-law. heather bowers sharing that he was whitney's world. >> that was her universe. that was her everything. and we loved him. he was part of our family to his part of so many people's families. he what he was just a great human being. and he's going to be so severely missed. >> the family is focusing on moving forward and healing and have created a gofundme to

says the group used a car to repeatedly ram through the front entrance on early sunday morning. she says this is now the first burglary to happen at this location on 5th street since she took over the business back in 2008. >> i'm in a $50,000 worth of that the physical damage to the stories. >> measurable. >> so a lot was taken. but hey, the community is stepping up, though, so far more than $50,000 has been raised to help them with their recovery effort. >> teachers and staff in the san ramon valley school district protesting proposed budget cuts today. the school district says it needs to close a 26 million dollar budget deficit in order to reach that goal. it says it needs to increase class sizes and eliminate management, administrative and custodial positions. teachers and staff are pushing back. i think a

lot of us feel betrayed. because we understand declining enrollment. we understand budget issues. >> but we also understand that it's management's responsibility to ensure and safeguard our kids. the school district says it will work with the unions representing teachers and staff. but >> even if the district reaches the desired budget savings, there could be even more cuts and changes ahead. layoff notices could start going out on march. 15th. >> community leaders in oakland are pleading with the city to rethink budget cuts they say will impact. >> vulnerable communities know that you've no >> this was at a rally today at the fruitvale transit village were they were calling on city leaders to stop millions of dollars in cuts more than a dozen organizations were there and they say the cuts hurt the unhoused seniors, immigrants, young people and violence

toward coy tower. nice evening out there. temperatures not all that bad. here's a look at the rainfall total so far this year, temperatures go. we've had over 17 and a 30 inch or so now running at 112% of normal. you get to san jose much better than it was to start the year. they really picked up in this last series of storms rolled through. so still sitting at 80% of normal for this time of year, only 60 percent of normal in oakland, the santa rosa, of course, the focus. the storms really north in that has meant that santa rosa just seen tremendous amounts of rain. almost 37 inches of rain there over 160% of normal. so as you can expect, a lot of the new year's usually the whether you go is toward the north, that's kind of how it's breaking down again. this is our drought monitor. you can see the area shaded in yellow toward gilroy and parts of san jose. as we're seeing a little bit, the less than normal rainfall further south, of course you get to southern california. the course heavy rain last week, but they're still in extreme drought conditions there. so that being said, we're going to get a little moisture overnight tonight and tomorrow morning, some scattered light showers as we

head throughout the night tonight. but the most part of the storm system going to fall in the jet stream that's going to add all the way up. you see focusing on the pacific northwest. they're going to the heavier amounts of forecast model for the system kind of dragged through tomorrow. some light showers kind of moving through about the middle the day and the afternoon we start clearing out as we get in the weekend. yeah, few passing clouds. we've got some very nice temperatures. likely some 70's breaking out over the weekend. another chance showers about the middle of next week or so as we see that storm system roll on rainfall amounts not going to be much for talking just a few hundreds of an inch of rain. if you get a need also tomorrow, not going to be a washout. just maybe a little wet early tomorrow morning specially for the commute. temperatures by the afternoon should be dry and 50's and some 60's next couple days. we are going to see the church showers tomorrow. then we clear things out come thursday. few clouds passing through as we head into the weekend. look at those temperatures office and we start to break out some 70 saturday and sunday and probably into monday and tuesday of next week. and that's a pretty nice place considering the rest the country. i mean, we're talking

about minor the morning a 50 degree everybody's coming out here. i think very soon. >> i mean, 70 to abc 7. they're they're getting on the flights and coming out. thanks, lauren. thanks, guys. >> mosul seal pups found roaming the streets of new haven, connecticut over the weekend. it was a state to be about 5 to 6 weeks old and spotted outside oyster bar and grill on saturday that about 20 miles from the coast. a rescue team from the local aquarium picked up the pup, brought it back to the beach only for it to wander back towards the city. the next day. they say the pups a bit underweight, though. so the zoo is now going to be taking care of it, feeding it up, fattening up a little bit so that they can then release it back into the wild. very good. all right. well, back here in california. >> the department of fish and wildlife says they have fitted 12 great wolves with tracking collars is will come from 3 packs spread across sisk. you

>> are you ready for robot umpires? we might be getting closer to that reality. major league baseball will test out. >> it's on a mated and strikes system in 13 stadiums. this spring complete with player challenges. here's how it's going to work. each team will be given 2 challenges again and will retain successful ones. only the batter catcher or pitcher can initiate a challenge. it's got to happen immediately. after the umpire's call, the results will be displayed on the scoreboard and the tv broadcast. if all goes well, we could see this regular season games as soon as 2026, i should note the giants and a's spring stadiums are not among the 13 participating. all right. speaking of the giants of good health reports so far this spring backu- catcher tom murphy infielder tyler fitzgerald are both battling sore backs, but nothing too serious and it gets better manager bob melvin spoke glowingly tuesday about the 5 in camp and the team chemistry and his second season as manager, we've had

really good atmosphere from. >> really for the last couple weeks. lot of guys reported early. you know, pictures you are usually are throwing pens, but position players have been here for a while. quite a few of men now live here and got here january 1st. so it's it's felt like spring training for a while now. but to get everybody pictures and catchers and the position players yesterday really kind of goodbye on the first day was exciting. >> major league baseball commissioner rob manfred confirming tuesday. what we already expected. the a's moved to vegas remains on track for the 2028 season. they'll play home games at sutter health park in sacramento for the next 3 years venue, which manfred called, quote, charming. the nfl season might be over. but the news cycle does continue. john madden's grandson, jessie madden, has joined the commander staff as offensive quality control coach, former stanford head coach david shaw was officially announced as the lions new pass game
