>> news at 6 begins breaking news. and that breaking news out of san jose where a pedestrian. >> was hit by a car. >> we were going to show you some video from the scene just into our news room. we are efforting that right now. thanks so much for joining us on kron. 4 news at 6. i'm vicki liviakis. i'm grant lotus san jose. police first reported the collision around 4.15 this afternoon. >> this is around north first and east mission streets. southbound first street is currently bdocked off from hedding street to mission street. the pedestrian has been taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after being hit by the car.

>> police are not providing any other details about the incident, at least at the moment, including whether or not this was a hit and run. we'll certainly be updating you as soon as we learn more. new at 6. san francisco is budget crisis continues and we could see future cuts to important departments throughout the city like the department of homelessness lezla gooden is taking a look into how this will affect the daily lives of residents. >> service cuts are looming in san francisco as the city deals with more than 840 million dollar budget deficit meeting. the city's projected spending is expected to exceed its revenue over the next 2 fiscal years. city will not have enough money to cover the cost. yeah, this is devastating and internal memo from mayor daniel lurie instructed all citywide departments, including the department of homelessness and housing to cut between 15 to 20% of their budget due to the current financial state. the city is it nonprofits like the

young woman's freedom center that focuses on youth. homelessness says they are worried there are are ready. overcrowding inside of. >> and shelters. they're still waiting lists for people to get in. if you take away resources to something that's are ready behind it's important that we're able be able to deeply invested this community to get them the access they need. we reached out to the mayor's office about these cuts and were given the following statement has time to deliver of responsibly balanced budget that focuses on core city services. >> if we don't take decisive action this year, the impact on our city, our ability to keep streets clean and safe. our public health infrastructure in our economy will be further jeopardize. he also stated that mayor london breed directed departments to find 15% in savings and he's

just maintaining the previous directed instead of budget cuts homelessness department. i think that we should be in testing young people and families. we reached out to the department of homelessness and supportive housing several times for comment but have not heard back as of news time was a good in kron. 4 news about 1000 national park workers. they've lost their jobs. the firings are all part of president trump's plan. >> to eliminate federal jobs to save money. cut for us. nesbitt spoke with workers who lost their jobs at yosemite about how they think the park experience will change this year robbed so many people visit yosemite. they've had to, you know, an act policies to restrict crowds recently. what are they telling you? >> well, grant, vicki, a lot of people who visit those parks are wondering what they'll look like this summer. the workers who were fired were from national parks who are all newly hired this year. and it's what's called a probationary period. but they also include workers who had

through. >> they are going to do anything to really address the deficit situation, that that's the president and elon musk are trying to do here. the u.s. national resources committee has jurisdiction over national parks. i spoke with the ranting democratic member of the committee representative jared huffman, who expects the national park decisions by trump and musk to be taken up in court. some of these firings we think are illegal. others are just wrong, headed. and so, you know, there will be litigation by. >> federal employee unions and others after firing notices were sent out friday. the park service added to the confusion tuesday saying it will reinstate about 5,000 seasonal jobs that were initially rescinded. those with national park experience likes a busy summer season combined with under staffing. >> will result in a dangerous situation for visitors keep fighting because this a highly illegal and me and the thousands of buttered probationers evan terminate illegally. we want after this. we feel very passionate about the park service.

>> protesters against the national park firings are planning to gather saturday from 10:00am to 04:00pm. >> at the exploration center in yosemite valley reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> in the east bay hearings in lawsuits and the alameda county superior court were disrupted today after a few dozen employees went on strike. union members say they've been working without a contract since december 31st after negotiations failed. they also say the court is using workers who aren't trained to work as courtroom clerks because one in 5 positions are vacant. >> having folks in the courtroom that aren't chain can result mistakes. huge airs we make mistakes here. the mistakes affect real people's lives. >> union members say they're demanding better pay and bereavement time. but the

court says it's already overstaffed by 100 employees and in order to increase pay, they'd have to lay some people off. the court says some felons could be released from jail if there cases can be heard before the state deadlines. the council on american islamic relations, san francisco is speaking out against stanford university. >> citing the university's ongoing suppression of palestinian advocacy, including arrests, suspensions and restrictions on student protests. kron gayle ong has >> today care is former formally designating stanford university as a hostile campus from palestinian and pro-palestinian students and faculty. that designation coming from the council on american islamic relations, san francisco or care members held a rally to speak out against the university's handling of pro-palestinian demonstrations. a clinical researcher at stanford shared her experience taking part in the rallies. one of our

demonstrations such as the one some students performed in the spring. graduation ceremony are now an authorized. the university warning at the time. violators are subject to disciplinary action. kron 4 reached out to stanford university about cares designation but have not heard back. go on kron 4 news and we reached out to j c r c for their response. but they have said they aren't able to comment. >> at this time. >> happening now, the vallejo city unified school district is holding a board meeting to vote on school closures and consolidations. happening. it mare island, health and fitness academy starting at 6 o'clock. so they're just getting started. the district is considering 3 options, including closing the mare island academy. >> also happening now, the santa rosa school board is expected to make a long-awaited final decision on which schools will close yesterday. they took part in a final five-hour session where they narrowed their options down to 2 scenarios. the

closures would take place during the next 3 years. tonight's meeting is at santa rosa city hall in the city council chambers are crawford's lindsey ford. she'll have more on this story ahead at 10. now at 6, a young person was injured in a shooting in san francisco, which happened just before 3 this afternoon on 37th avenue. >> and santiago street in the outer sunset, police say this child was found with a gunshot wounds. they were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive. no word tonight on a suspect. >> in the east bay, a man has been arrested in walnut creek after police say he shot a gun at someone. it happened just after 7 o'clock last night on sierra drive. not too far from broadway plaza. very popular place. police say that the shooter identified as 43 year-old kevin or rather melvin kibbe was already gone. when officers got to the scene, no one was hurt. they say that the suspect and the victim knew each other kibby

is facing charges including attempted murder and being a person who is not allowed to have a gun or he's behind bars on a $600,000 bail. >> after a few days of drying out, we saw some rain this morning, not a ton, but it got a sweat as we take a live look here from the top of sutro tower over the city news. we've been noticing a little bit of fog is just kind of creeping in on us. lauren stella got more of that coming our guys, some more fog and role on one side will seek a more facts fog. but. >> yeah, nice little shower rolled through the bay area today. things move down the afternoon. here's where we sit now. skies begin to part just a bit. couple patches of clouds out there right now. and even a couple patches of fog across the bay area. rainfall amounts. yeah, not real heavy with this system, but we had over a 10th of an inch of rain in mill valley. also into san leandro. alameda less than that, temperatures go just 406, 100's in half moon bay in just a little more than a drop in the bucket. there inhaler. but all around the bay area. some nice, gentle rain continue to fall.

there it goes rolling on through kind of finishing up, though, as we head toward the afternoon and this where we sit now as we dry things out here, the storm really kind of just falling apart as it moves southward. still some lingering showers and a few snow showers in the high country toward the yosemite valley. you're seeing some patchy stuff up there toward lake tahoe as well. but overall, things are going to quiet down tonight, partly cloudy skies. still, though, if you're headed out the door, a few more patches of fog developing, especially in the interior valleys. watch out for some of that ground fog late tonight. otherwise grab a jacket. temperatures dropping off the 40's 50's by 9 o'clock. tonight. all right. thank you, lawrence. back to our. >> breaking news that we told you about at the top of the hour. that person who was hit by a vehicle. the person is at the hospital with life threatening injuries. you can see the roadway is still closed off in san jose. this is a situation that happened late this afternoon and

>> accidental drug overdose deaths continue to be on the rise in san francisco after several months of them declining last fall come for centerman tells us there's now renewed focus on a community that is seeing a disproportionate amount of deaths. accidental overdose deaths continue on the rise in san francisco for the 3rd month in a row with 59 people dying in january and public health officials are especially concerned the while african-americans represent just 6% of san francisco is population. 28% of last year's overdosed. s where african-americans, black african americans are dying at a higher rate and other community members in san francisco. and this is true across the country. this is a tragedy with african americans dying at a rate 5 times higher than any other community in

san francisco, the department of public health is expanding access to medications, to treat those addicted to opioids. last year we launched on demand buprenorphine with a focus on of nighttime telehealth outreach in the tenderloin. >> and we are happy to say we are on track to bring the service to the bayview not neighborhood this spring. we've it will be in the bayview getting people on the phone with a doctor when they want treatments. people are feeling what it did for me. it gave me time and space so that i could recover and i didn't have to deal with those >> those cravings and i got a chance to rebuild my life. siobhan allen is featured in the department's living proof campaign and does outreach with the community group co tenderloin. >> when i see the other ship want out there. i'm able share my story and represent what living proof looks like. and that recovery and returning to a meaningful purposeful life

as possible. the public health department says it's also partnering. >> but various african-american organizations in the city to better reach that community. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> u.s. officials investigating yet another plane crash. this one was in arizona today. investigators say 2 people died after their small planes collided this morning. this is at the they're on a regional airport about 15 miles northwest of tucson. the faa says 2 people were aboard each plane. the more on a regional airport has 2 intersecting runways but operates without an air traffic control tower. multimillion dollar project was underway to build a tower but delays due to the pandemic pushback. construction, tens of thousands of flights arrive and depart from the airport each year. the ntsb is investigating the crash. meantime, authorities are still investigating what caused a delta plane to crash land and flipped over in toronto on monday.

>> more than a dozen people were hurt, but everyone on board did survive a video showing the moment the plane crashed is raising questions about the pilot's actions. experts say that the clip appears to show that the pilot did not raise the aircraft's nose during the descent. canada's transportation safety board with the help of the faa. they're heading the probe into this crash in total 8 crashes have happened in the last 3 weeks in both the u.s. and canada on the peninsula. contract negotiations for san carlos airport. air traffic controllers. >> we're still at a standstill, according to san mateo county supervisor. regular this could put sky ways over the county at risk. the contract dispute comes amid ongoing national questions over aviation safety in the midst of job cuts at the faa. we've reached out to the faa saying carlos airport and supervisor mueller for comment and we'll share any updates as we learn. alright,

weather time here as we get a live look out there and the bay area's getting ready for a warm-up. i am lawrence has an update. yeah. how about that guys? nice little system rolling through the bay area today. not for long, though, just a few minutes or a and then it kind of sweeping on through and >> your skies clearing out around the bay area. still some leftover clouds out there right now in enough moisture that likely see some patchy ground fog developing some of the valley. so we're going to be watching out for that. otherwise looking out toward the golden gate bridge, not bad at all. it's trying out there right now and looking good. so far. skies clearing out a bit as well. but see a couple passing clouds as we head throughout the night tonight, today's almanac into san francisco. temperatures running a little bit below the average say we checked in a 58 to be. so that's slightly below normal for this time of year. the record on the state set back in 1964. at 75 degrees. sunrise 6.54 sunset now dive. 54. some days are definitely growing longer. well, let's start to feel a little bit more like as we head toward of the spring season. you see some of that

fog in the background sfo are going to see more of that on the way highs the right around the average for the bay area looks like not a bad place to be, but we're going to see these temperatures had a well above the average in the coming days. highpressure can start to build in tomorrow. drying things out outside right now. and that trend will continue skies. yeah, still a couple of patchy clouds out there right now, especially over the mountain tops. but overall, i think the trend looking good. the breeze has been kicking up in spots. we've seen some of those winds along the coastline of 2030 miles per hour, but not too bad. just a general sea breeze. and here's the good news. the best news of all high pressure going start to build our skies. start to clear out as we head in toward tomorrow, few passing clouds as we get into friday. but really, i think the trend toward the weekend, high pressure going to send all these storms well to the north of the bay area. we're going to be on the south side. that means we're in the sweet spot, guys. we're going to be sitting pretty as we get the weekend. some 70's popping up out around the bay area a little spring fever. breaking to be a great weekend ahead. role making plans already. yeah, we should. thanks a new bill in the legislature looks to protect california,

>> nearly 35 years after an east bay woman was found dead along a trail with a rope around her neck. now local and federal authorities say are cold case murders been solved. kron four's philippe djegal reports. >> maria white hoffer was reported missing november 15th, 1990, and the next day she was found dead in tilden

regional park in the east bay hills was found with wrote around her neck. and i physical signs of a struggle in 1997, the east bay regional park district police department sent the potential suspects dna from the crime scene to the contra costa crime lab. but no match was found. then the fbi got involved in the investigation in 2020 and on wednesday during a news conference in oakland, east bay regional park district police detective christopher rudy says advanced dna techniques linked to killer through this investigation. john, the party was determined to be a potential suspect. >> and later became a primary suspect in 2024. detective rudy says these composite sketches of law party released in 2017 ended up being accurate. pari was in his mid 30's living in martinez when white hoffer was murdered. then in november, party took his own life at his home in gold beach, oregon.
