community park turned open air drug markets. how one san francisco leaders working to make the area safer. an evening and thanks for joining us for kron. 4 news at 10. i'm dan thorn and i'm noelle bellow. we begin tonight in san francisco where unionize workers with h bay area museums are calling for better pay and more transparency from leaders. >> tonight, the group protested outside san francisco's park. 55 hotel demanding a seat at the table ahead of a dinner for museum managers. the group includes workers from the california academy of sciences has that the young and other museums, some of the staff are currently working to negotiate new contracts.

>> little and farrah to screen sits atop and so we've all got to pay our bills having a hard time the bottom. >> workers also say they want more involvement with decision making at the museum's service clot cuts are looming in san francisco is a city is dealing with the more than 840 million dollar budget deficit. >> an internal memo from mayor daniel lurie instructed all city departments, including the department of homelessness and housing to cut between 15 to 20% of their budgets. nonprofits, like the young women's freedom center that focuses on youth, homelessness say there worried. >> there are are ready. overcrowding inside of. and shelters. they're still waiting lists for people to get it's important that we're able be able to deeply

little more sunshine begin to peek through and little more of that on the way. as we head toward 10 looks like it's a beginning of some much warmer weather. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. thank you, lawrence. new at 10 oakland police have arrested the driver suspected in a hit and run that killed renowned sociology professor michael burr. avoid 61 year-old kerr ms miller has been booked into santa rita jail. the crash happened back on february. 3rd at the intersection >> of grand avenue and parkview terrace. that's in oakland's adams point neighborhood. police say bureau boy was in a crosswalk around 7.15, that morning when he was hit and died at the scene for a boy taught at u c berkeley for nearly 50 years before retiring in 2023. one person is in the hospital tonight after being struck by a car in san jose this afternoon. police say that crash happened in the area of north first and east mission streets around 4.15, a stretch of first street was blocked

off for several hours before reopening around 8 o'clock tonight, police did not provide any other details about the crash. they say the investigation is ongoing. nearly 35 years after an east bay woman was found dead along a trail with a rope around her neck. >> dna evidence helped track down the killer who ultimately took his own life. maria, why firm was reported missing back on november. 15th, 1990. the next day. she was found dead in tilden regional park in the east bay hills in 1997 eastt bay regional park district police department sent dna found at the crime scene to the contra costa crime lab. but there was no match found. then the fbi got involved in the investigation in 2020 and on wednesday it was announced that advanced to dna techniques have linked a killer. >> through this investigation. john, the party was determined to be a potential suspect. and later became our primary suspect in 2024.

>> investigators do not believe. the killer and why different knew each other prior to her death. >> jurors have decided maddy middleton's convicted killer is still too dangerous to be released from custody. adrian gonzalez was 15 years old when he lured 8 year-old maddie into his mother's santa cruz apartment where he strangled the girl on his bed sexually assaulted her and stabbed her to death. he has served nearly a decade in juvenile custody, but his 25th birthday triggered today's hearing under state law. any criminal convicted in juvenile courts qualifies for possible parole when they turn. 25, however, gonzalez was ordered to return to juvenile hall. he will be eligible for a new trial in 2 years. >> young person injured in a shooting in san francisco. this happened just before 3 o'clock this afternoon on 37th avenue and santiago street in the outer sunset. police say the person was found with a

gunshot wound. they were taken to the hospital and expected to be okay. still no word tonight on a suspect. >> in mill valley, a major crash shut down the road in front of temple pies. high school tonight. police responded to miller avenue shortly before 07:00pm. 2 cars were involved. airbags deployed in both vehicles. but no word on what led up to the crash or if there were any injuries. road was closed in both directions was expected to reopen at 10 o'clock. we'll, of course, bring you more information as we receive it. >> the bay area council on american islamic relations speaking out against stanford university. they say the school has been suppressing palestinian advocacy through arrests, suspensions and restricting protests on campus advocates argue these actions have created a climate of fear for those speaking out for palestinian human rights. >> while scampered claims to be committed to upholding free

speech rights and freedom of expression also repeated be subject to students who protested the genocide to harsh disciplinary measures, including suspension and the threat of exposure. >> last fall, the university said it will be prohibiting disruptions on its campus and violators would be subject to disciplinary action. kron 4 has reached out to stanford university comment. and as of this report, they have not responded. >> celebrity chef tyler florence has left union square and are some questionable circumstances. he opened to mueller and lux provisions cafes in 2023. one knox to stockton street and the other near powell, both however, closed abruptly last weekend. city officials say florence $440,000 grant from the city to upgrade the spaces and launch those eateries. a spokesperson for the san francisco office of economic and workforce development said all of the money was used for

start-up costs, but now they're lingering questions about whether the cafes were supposed to be startups or not. at the time of the opening than mayor london breed said florence was given a three-year leases for both spaces with options for extensions. we did reach out to the chef to try and learn more about the reasons behind the closures but have not heard back. hearings and lawsuits in the alameda county superior court were disrupted today after a few dozen employees went on strike. union members say they've been working without a contract since december 31st. after negotiations for a new one failed. they also say the court is using workers who aren't trained to work as courtroom clerks because one of the one in 5 positions are currently vacant. >> having folks in the court room that aren't chain can result mistakes. huge airs we

>> welcome back. san francisco leaders are working to curb drug use across the city and learn which groups are most at risk. today, public health officials shared new data on accidental overdose deaths. they say the accidental overdoses are on the rise for the 3rd month in a row. a total of 59 people died in january and health officials are particularly concerned about one community. >> we continue to see a disproportionate number of black african americans dying due to overdose. despite

representing just 6% of the san francisco population. 28% of preliminary overdose deaths in 2024. among black african americans. >> that means african-americans are dying at a rate 5 times higher than any other community and the city. now in recent months, city teams have been responding to drug use hot spots in the tenderloin and soma neighborhoods. but a new neighborhood is now seeing an influx of activity as kron. 4 sarah stinson reports that one supervisors proposing a plan to make jefferson park cleaner and safer. >> it's pretty it's us that losing it. >> it was clean during the day. jefferson square park in san francisco is a go-to spot for dog walkers. but at night things take a turn for the worse cell phone video shows the park overrun by an open air drug market. well, they call it to some of the park now. yes, a some people eat. a new un class signed sebastien

has lived nearby for nearly 30 years. he wants to remain anonymous for safety but feels compelled to sppak out about how frightening the park has become in the last few months. it's very scary because, you know, they have to schools and on here. >> we have out there early and people that live in the neighborhood, the effort to walk, you know, with all to dealers and the use of all over the place. this park is located on goff street about a half-mile away from city hall. >> and next, a sacred heart cathedral. the school has put up no trespassing signs by their field pockets. a mess. now, all the neighbors have been complaining, supervisor, beloved, mood, has heard these complaints from people saying the drug dealing has moved to the park from his district in the tenderloin. and that he are looking really good compared to even a couple months ago. but some things are getting worse. in other neighborhoods. decided to see it for himself walking the park with staff from the drug market agency coordination center or d mac. a task force

with several different agencies. we didn't see any arrests that day because sometimes a lot of these things can be solved without an arrest. >> and that's something that the d mac organization knows and i saw firsthand that they are treating all types of solutions to help people suffering on streets as but sebastian says when the park does get cleared out, all the people just move down to van ness and eddy streets. so as you can see mask, the use suspended just wall. >> slowly here and that they would law back and forth back and talk to you don't feel like anything's actually being solved. no, nothing has been soft so far. anything else learned that kind of prevents can from getting kicked down the road and then 2 things. one, that's why we need a holistic approach. and we saw that with makin. they kind of made it very clear if they're able to operate more hours during the day every day. >> that ensures that can be in more places at once and ensure that were permanently shutting on the market. and we're not just kicking it down the can down the road or spreading it and displacement into other neighborhoods as well to provisor will be proposing new

legislation to the rest of the board. >> to increase staffing for dmx task force that way they can have people out there 7 days a week. this has neighbors like sebastien feeling hopeful that the nearby park and streets will be safer and cleaner. i'm sara stinson reporting back to you. >> 2 high school communities in the north bay anxiously awaiting an answer on whether or not their schools will close. tonight, the santa rosa school board is weighing the decision at the district is facing a multimillion dollar deficit kron four's. lindsey ford reports. >> inside and outside santa rosa city hall students, parents and teachers from elsie allen in montgomery high school protesting, but signs expressing their love for their schools and for them not to close. this comes as santa rosa school board is facing a 20 million dollar deficit and their plan to fix it is

through school closures 16 year-old jonathan creo. another student said elsie allen believe the board wants to close their school because of racism. 100%. yes, they we are a full school of many ethnic groups. says he is part of a uc program at the high school were juniors and seniors can take classes at sonoma state university, which is big deal for us because no other high schools have opportunity. parents of students at montgomery high school feel the same way. they say their school also has so much to offer students. this isn't for me. >> cnn >> in >> santa rosa, lindsey ford kron. 4 news.

>> 2 schools and delay home will be closing the city's unified school district voted tonight to close mare island, health and fitness academy. and loma this environmental science academy. in addition, vallejo charter school be relocated to the mare island campus in the district will make nearly 13 million dollars in cuts and lay off staff. the decision was part of the board's effort to address 36 million dollars and a budget deficit over the next 2 years. several spent parents spoke out ahead of the vote, demanding transparency. >> but they all charter coming to this campus is not a closure. it's just moving us around. and that's what we want. transparency over even loma vista. leave them alone. you got that li coln over there. let's talk about transparency when everybody we knew we were at the town hall and said it was 70 kids there. clear transparency. we can't close that campus because nobody understands why they're 70 kids there. >> parents and staff deserve

to know more transparency is what we're asking for. our kiddos. needs to know if they get to see their 4th grade teacher that she's looking forward to next year. you've talked about how many students you've lost. >> you've lost a tremendous number of students and you're there's no plan to bring kids back. well, guess what? of this environmental sciences academy is away to bring students back to the school district. it is a gem. it is unique. it is one of only a handful of schools like it in the entire united states of the presentation. well, both mare island and loma vista will close this summer once the current school year ends. >> and the charter school relocation will happen at the beginning of next school year. san francisco is for speed camera up at the busy intersection of geary boulevard and 7th avenue in the richmond. the city is installing more than 33 of

these cameras. there will be at least 2 in each district and 7 cameras in just the south of market neighborhood. the cameras will step photos of rear license plates tend the registered owner will receive a citation in the mail ranging from 50 to $100 depending on how fast they wereigoing. safe. streets advocates with walk sf say they are hopeful the new technology will prevent traffic deaths as 2024 was labeled the deadliest year for traffic crashes in a decade. loved ones of those affected by car crashes are celebrating the installation, hoping it will save lives. >> my mom did lead to position. she do that. she's a impacted by some kind of car. that's why i tell people i represent my can i know she was cognitively not impair. she would want to use what has happened to her too, educate our community to not let this happen to someone else. >> cameron. so today is a first for the city and the state advocates and lawmakers say it took 6 years to pass

legislation legalizing the speed cameras. >> an exciting and unusual sighting in the north bay cameras capturing black bear cubs at could mountain regional park in sonoma county. the park's say this is the first time in nearly a decade. cubs have been spotted at hood mountain. look, good. little group and estimated the cubs are about a year old and will leave mom pretty soon. the park say this is a good reminder. sonoma county is their country. black bears are not usually aggressive, but you should not feed if you see them. it's interesting to see them. you know, the acute. yeah, they're very cute. getting out there. rather. that's i mean, we're gonna have some nice changes. love that. but a real taste of spring coming our way as we're going to get back. >> into some dry weather looks like we may not see rain until the end of the month of may be

beyond how about that? so today they have been last shower that we see in quite some time out there right now. we are already drying things out around the bay area today. temperatures. yeah, right around the average for this time of year. i want you to know this that we've got some 50's and some mid 60's by tomorrow. we start to warm things up by this weekend. yeah, we're talking the talk about a lot of 70's popping up around the bay area. so storm clouds rolling on through. there's that front driving on by just not much energy to it. so a few 107 inch of rain around most of the bay area. now things calming down and things looking good as we head in toward the next couple days. we're drying out now as high pressure begins to build in that ridge is going to set the stage for some warmer weather. it's also gonna help the bump. all those storm clouds well to the north. that means we've got some nice weather coming our direction overnight tonight, something we're going to watch out for the rain. yeah. even though wasn't much to leave some moisture behind. and so we could see the development some patchy valley fog overnight tonight and early tomorrow morning. but well, after the morning hours, that's long gone. start to clear out your skies very nicely. we're see a lot of sunshine. just a couple of passing clouds and really a

>> today u.s. officials tasked with investigating yet another plane crash at us. one happened in arizona. investigators say 2 people died after their small planes collided this morning. ed, more on a regional airport around 15 miles northwest of tucson. the faa says 2 people were aboard each plane in them are on a regional airport, has 2 intersecting runways, but operates without an air traffic control tower.

multimillion dollar project was underway to build a but delays because of the covid pandemic pushback that construction, tens of thousands of flights arrive and depart from that airport annually. the ntsb is now investigating this crash. >> meantime, delta now offering $30,000 to each passenger from the plane. that crash landed upside down in toronto on monday. this comes as authorities continue to investigate exactly what went wrong here. everyone on board survived, but 17 people including a child were injured. a video showing the moment the plane crashed is raising questions about the pilot's actions. experts say it looks as if the pilot did not raise the aircraft's nose during the descent. canada's transportation safety board with the help of the faa are heading up this probe. in total 8 plane crashes have happened just in the last 3 weeks and both the united

>> today marks 83 years since japanese internment camps were created in the united states this afternoon, a san jose state university helda ceremony to remember the lives of japanese californians forever changed on for stephanie rothman joins us in the newsroom now with more on their dedication, staffing. >> and while the event was somber, but informant, nonetheless, the goal was to make sure the history books remember and prevent the discrimination from happening again on february 1919, 42 president franklin d roosevelt signed the executive order that forced more than 120,000 japanese americans, the 10 cars and jason camps on the west coast. two-thirds of those incarcerated were u.s. citizens. wednesday's a remembrance looks back at san

and gration officers and may be allowed to make arrests in places like churches, synagogues and temples. >> we do not turn our backs on each other. we do not round people up. we do not send them back into harm's way because sanctuary is not just a place. it's a calling. it's wholly resistance. this. >> more than 2 dozen religious organizations have filed a federal lawsuit challenging president trump's immigration policy allowing ice raids and places of worship schools and hospitals. all of the places that had previously been protected under other administrations. >> lauren, the 1000 national park workers have lost their jobs in the firings. a part of president trump's plan to eliminate. federal jobs to save money. kron four's rob nesbitt spoke with workers who were fired at yosemite national park. the workers who were fired from national parks were all newly hired in the last year and in what's called a probationary period.

>> but there are also workers who were fired who had been with the national park for 20 plus years before switching to a new role. >> the sounds of nature bring millions of people to yosemite national park each year hikes, waterfalls and wildlife are abundant, but there will be fewer workers in 2025. president trump authorized the firing of about 1000 newly hired national park employees, looks more who was fired from his job at yosemite as a custodial worker. this country has a lot of black marks against downs history. >> and things we've and we can argue and they care about these things. but, you know, our national parks are truly are treasures and never before had been other more threats. more is notice that his firing was due to poor performance, but he had always received in exceeded expectations. review from supervisors. >> the firings were not publicly announced but confirmed by democratic senators and house members. the plan is being led by billionaire elon musk and the new department of government efficiency. senator alex padilla says must decisions

probationers evan terminate illegally. we want after this. we feel very passionate about the park service protesters against the national park firings plan on gathering saturday from 10:00am to 04:00pm. >> at the exploration center and yosemite valley reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> let's go to southern california now where a mountain lion turned a quiet afternoon into a wild chase ventura county neighborhood. take a look. the big cat. they're living across roofs and running between homes with animal control officers hot on its tail. the big cat was eventually tranquilized and captured. animal control officers can move it to a safe location. was quite a scene there. not lines are also common here in the bay area. as we know, state wildlife officials say this is a good reminder to avoid keeping food outside because and can attract mountain lions to your own. >> that's a big cat. new bill in the legislature is looking to protect california drinking water from p f a s known as

forever chemicals. the bill will create a new state drinking water standards that will limit exposure to toxic and dangerous forever. chemicals that make it into the water supply. those chemicals are found in everyday products like nonstick cookware stain-resistant fabrics and firefighting foam. >> fundamentally, this is about a common sense approach with common sense regulation that everybody should be able to get behind and our kids and our families and our community should not be exposed to known deadly and toxic chemicals in our water. that is a baseline that hopefully everybody can get behind. >> similar legislation on the federal side faced opposition at legal challenges from chemical manufacturing groups concerned about the cost to remove the chemicals from the water. >> all right. let's get you a check of your forecast now as we're taking a live look at the san mateo bridge. we saw a bit of a mixed bag today, but it looks like maybe in the

clouds are moving on. now. let's check in with our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow a lot. yeah, looking good now as we are sailing a little bit close to the weekend now and things going to really shape up nicely. i think wheather wise going to see a lot of sunshine. even some temperatures popping up in the 70's. but out there today, a few scattered showers showing up around the bay area. most that just some light rain moving on by and lasted boy 10, 15 minutes in my neighborhood. that was it kind of moving on out right drying things out, though, toward the golden gate bridge, going to stay that way. the clouds? yep, some patchy fog forming overnight tonight, especially in some of the valleys. tomorrow morning. fog and then warmer as we head toward the afternoon, a dry weekend on tap for the bay area. and it's going to be warmer, too. so we're joined that nice weather, other parts of the country. boy, the arctic cold air just sliding in snow along the eastern seaboard. the storm system producing lots of snow there and sliding off the east making its way back in the atlantic. but behind that cold air in place. in fact, we're talking about extreme cold warnings all the way down the houston area. they've seen incredibly cold temperatures

but things for us weather shaping up to be very, very nice. high pressure building in. that's going to send the storm track to the north fewc high clouds drift over the top of that ridge. otherwise dry into friday. we had the weekend looks fantastic. storm clouds still staying to the north, maybe just clipping far northern california. the bay area going to stay dry and much warmer to. in fact, looks like the long-range models are keeping things pretty dry out there all around as we head toward the end of the month, slight chance we might some rain as we get in toward the beginning of march. overall, things staying drier than normal. looks like and long range models. and that's not a bad place to be considering how wet it was to start out the first part of the month. temperatures are going to be noticeably warmer as we head toward tomorrow afternoon. 69 degrees, napa. 69 in santa rosa. as we get toward the weekend, even warmer than that. so here's your 10, 10 forecast. couple numbers looking good as we get toward the weekend, 70's on saturday and sunday, a few clouds roll in come monday. and i think we watch as temperatures pop right back up, how into the 70's as we big that some nice for this time of year?
