history month celebration. deputy chief of staff stephen miller celebrated the end of the country's diversity equity and inclusion policy. and now schools have been given an ultimatum, get rid of dei programs or risk losing federal funding kron four's rob nesbitt reports. >> schools k through 12 colleges and universities have been given 2 weeks get rid of their diversity initiatives programs put in place to help diversify a student body are viewed as discrimination by the white house, ending diversity, equity and inclusion is a precondition of receiving federal funds. the white house is threatening to withhold federal funds to schools that promote dei. this letter sent out by the department of education gives k through 12 schools 2 weeks to end race-based admissions, hiring scholarships or graduation ceremonies. vallejo superintendent ruben are yellow, says his district is one of the most diverse in the country. diversity is built into our town. it's built into the students we serve. >> and we honor that. we honor diversity we see. we have a very powerful strategic plan.

israel the department of education's letter also included an online complaint link for anyone to click on who believes that a school has committed unlawful discrimination. reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news 2 schools are closing in vallejo by the end of the school year and another will be relocated. >> the school district voted last night to close mare island, health and fitness academy and loma vista, environmental science academy, the charter school that will be relocated to the mare island campus and the district will make nearly 13 million dollars in budget cuts and layoffs. staff. the decision was part of the board's effort to address 36 million dollar budget deficit over the next couple of years. it is traumatic. no one wants their child to have to go to this. we know we have to put a lot of things in place to continue to serve, hold our families and support them. >> through that through this transition in the end, it's their baby right? it's their child who gets dropped off at a school and they want to make

sure that their child feel safe at school is going to be well taken care of and educated. and that's alternate goal. >> the superintendent says the district staff is reaching out to families affected to help them with the transition to a new school controversy. a vote is forcing 3 santa rosa elementary schools to close brook hill elementary albert, bla elementary. those are going to close this june and steele lane elementary will close in june of next year. but the future of other schools, it's on hold. the board ended up running out of time and had to end the meeting at 11 30 last night. so still no decision on if the district will shut down montgomery or elsie allen high schools. >> lot of anxiety. a lot of frustration lot of mixed emotions, of course, that there's a lot of uncertainty. and so that got a crash is mail there's a lot of just uneasiness of what's next. you know, we don't know what's next for any of us. and so it's just more of a waiting game, especially after the decisions last night.

>> the district is facing a 20 million dollar deficit, forcing them to make some pretty tough decisions that are going to impact the families they serve. the board is also considering laying off employees. >> another big story tonight, at least a dozen cars had their windows smashed in near tourist hot spot. and san francisco kron four's gayle ong joins us live from the city with details. good evening, gayle. >> good evening grants. and yes, a string of car burglaries caught on camera. take a look. >> just before 4.30, thursday morning, security cameras capturing a car driving in the area of leavenworth and greenwich in san francisco. moments later, this person in a bright hooded sweater smashes a window and dives in and out of the passenger side. we found william bennett covering up his broken windows hours later. >> person, a car in francisco for about 12 years. this is the first time it's ever happened to

>> and he is not alone. at least a dozen cars parked near his could be seen with smashed windows. savers ago. police spent the morning taking reports this scene of the auto break-ins right by the famed lombard street. while the incident took place near a prime san francisco location. residents say the area is not usually targeted for these crime scenes like. >> it just hurts here for 12 years. and this is the first time that happened. probably the bigger surprise crime data from the san francisco police department central station which covers this neighborhood. >> shows reported burglary and larceny thefts are down since january. 1st larceny theft is down. 61 1% from this time frame last year. citywide. those crimes are overall down. the car owner we spoke with says not much was taken and auto glass repair. van was also at the scene. just going to quote from those guys for 300 plus.

practices. the union is calling for better pay and bereavement time. but the court says that they are overstaffed by 100 employees and they would have to lay off staff members in order to increase pay as ahe strike continues. it could halt trials and delay hearings throughout the system in alameda county. >> the oakland firefighters union says in apartment fire last night is a perfect example. 5 fire stations shouldn't be closing in the city. last night's fire started around 9 o'clock. this is 55 macarthur, the apartments about a 2 minute drive from fire station 10, unfortunately, that station closed in november of 2022. for renovations. it still hasn't reopened as a result. firefighters from another station had become. that's about 5 minutes away. fire fighters, union members say when it comes to response time, every minute is crucial. >> every time someone calls 9,

>> beginning today, the irs is laying off about 7,000 workers, mostly probationary workers who have worked there for a few months or so at their jobs. this announcement comes after do jordan is a shunt announced its plans to drastically shrink the federal workforce, trying to cut government spending. the layoffs are said to only affect people hired after the irs received additional funding from former president biden to increase staff. it's unclear how the layoffs will affect the current tax season. federal aviation administration employees. we're also let go as part of the best federal layoffs. now, the president says no one with a critical safety position was fired as part of the cuts. >> reporter liberty simmons has that story. >> just frustrated a almost a sense of betrayal, disabled army veteran and former faa

employee jason king says he was one of the employees fired in the mass layoffs. the kind of shocked that you can serve your country. >> and want to dedicate, you know, the next step in your career to public service. and i mean, the way you can just so easily be tossed to the side. u.s. department of tra,sportation secretary sean duffy says 400 out of 45,000 faa employees were let go. >> all of them probationary us dot released a statement saying in part the agency has retained employees who perform safety critical functions. i believe that's i my actual role in the faa was the executive assistant and i provided direct support to the director of safety himself. jason is concerned these layoffs will threaten safety at agency that was already understaffed. well, i was there. the coworkers that i had were already stressed about budget cuts, you know, resources. they need to be implemented. but the faa says it continues to hire an

onboard air traffic controllers and safety professionals, including mechanics and others who support them. you know, weakening the faa today does lead to a preventable tragedy that could potentially happen tomorrow. >> and as republicans in congress move forward with a budget plan, democratic governors warn the proposal puts medicaid on life support. president trump says he wants to protect medicaid but clashes it with the house gop budget plan which seeks to cut medicaid over the next decade. >> it will affect millions of americans. those people tend to be children, people with disabilities with very serious illness and we're living in poverty to have the best system. >> and to have the most efficient system and to have the one that really delivers results. we need to make sure that there's no waste. there's no fraud. democratic governor say that they're going to keep fighting to protect medicaid, but with budget negotiations looming, this battle is far from over.

few more 70's beginning show up around the bay area. so you can kind of get the sense that ridge of high pressure you see a few high clouds, kind of roll over the top of the ridge jet stream moving to the north. that's setting the storm track in that direction. that's way it's going to hold at least for now, although storm rolling over the top of the ridge that you're going to see some high clouds drift across our skies as we get in toward a late saturday into sunday. even a chance of drizzle across parts of the north bay, then too. but as we get toward tomorrow afternoon, enjoy the day. it's going to be one of those gorgeous days outside lots of sunshine around the bay area. and really, i think of nice sunset with a couple of passing clouds another gorgeous day on saturday, saturday night into sunday. that's when that's weak system. kind of slides through that will bring with it a chance. some drizzle into the north bay. otherwise some dry conditions. so here we go, looking out over the next few days, we've got a great almost a spring-like weekend coming your way. the temperatures sticking up in the 70's. that is very nice compared to other parts of the country where they are in the deep freeze. we're going to talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. i lauren still ahead, kron 4 is celebrating black

>> 3 men have been arrested in san jose connected to separate cases of retail theft and attempted kidnapping. and one of the men arrested is accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of items from businesses in the span of nearly a year. 2 other men were booked into jail for trying to kidnap a bank employee. police say they impersonated federal agents when they tried to approach a woman outside her home in november. they tried to arrest

her, but the woman was suspicious and resisted. both men then drove off before police arrived. the 2 men are set to be extradited to santa clara county from las vegas facility. research from a use treatment program indicates a gen z is cutting back on alcohol. but abusing drugs. more. >> survey from addiction resource dot net. its shares 20% of adults under 28 consume alcohol regularly. but research shows that fentanyl use increased. 47% in teens over the past year, along with rising rates of marijuana, psychedelics and stimulants use. now this news comes following san francisco overdose report which shows accidental overdoses are on the rise for the 3rd month in a row. there were 59 in january to help the department is expanding access to medications, to treat those who are addicted to opioids. and starting next monday, the west contra costa unified school district is hosting a
