>> face funding cuts, taking aim race based practices in programs. >> is at 6. >> thanks for joining us on kron. 4 news at 6 tonight. i'm grant lotus and i'm vicki liviakis. a line of parked cars were targeted in san francisco. there are well-known tourist site in the city got force. gayle ong joins us live in san francisco with details. gayle, unfortunately, this is something we see. >> i know grant and vicki, a car break-ins, not new here in the bay area. they do seem to happen in 2 ways. and this incident captured on video. >> just before 4.30, thursday morning, security cameras capturing a car driving in the greenwich in san francisco. moments later, this person in a bright hooded sweater smashes a window and dives in and out of the passenger side. we found william bennett

covering up his broken windows hours later. >> person, a car in san francisco for about 12 years. this is the first time it's ever happened to >> and he is not alone. at least a dozen cars parked near his could be seen with smashed windows. sabres ago. police spent the morning taking reports this scene of the auto break-ins right by the famed lombard street. while the incident took place near a prime san francisco location. residents say the area is not usually targeted for these crime scenes like. >> it's just part here for 12 years. and this is the first time that happened. probably the bigger surprise crime data from the san francisco police department central station which covers this neighborhood. >> shows reported burglary and larceny thefts are down since january. 1st larceny theft is down. 61 1% from this time frame last year. citywide. those crimes are overall down. the car owner we spoke with says not much was taken and

auto glass repair. van was also at the scene. just going to quote from those guys for 300 plus. >> but to have triple a insurance and the only responsible for $100 deductible on this. >> so that's the good news for us. as for repairs, are gonna send a guy tomorrow afternoon to fix it. so it's not raining. >> and new state law is making it easier to hold people accountable for breaking into cars. the new law no longer requires california car owners to prove their doors were locked or unlocked. when it was being broken into reporting live san francisco, gayle ong kron. 4 news. >> it to thanks, gayle. >> also in san francisco, this is not good either. a shop owner in chinatown has to clean up all this mess after his shop was burglarized this morning. the owner says it's the second time in 6 months they've been hit. we've reached out to the sfpd to get more details. but we have not

heard back. >> san jose is announcing some recent arrests that they've made in separate cases in connection to retail theft and attempted kidnapping. one of the men arrested is accused of robbing a business several times in the span of nearly a year. police say that the man first robbed a store on river park drive back in november of 20 twenty-three's accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of items. he was booked into jail for grand theft. 2 more men were arrested for attempting to kidnap a bank employee. police say the man impersonated federal agents when they approached a woman outside her home back in november. they attempted to arrest her, but the woman resisted. both men drove off before police arrived. the 2 men, though, are currently being held in las vegas, but they'll be sent to the santa clara county jail. >> why weather time as we get a live look over san francisco chief meteorologist lawrence karnow joins us. lawrence, this is one of those days. if you are visiting today, you'd want to move here. yeah, no

kidding. special are the kind of weather they're seen in other parts of the country. but i hope you ha a chance get out there to enjoy. >> that sunshine today, a couple passing high clouds in the afternoon. still looking at. >> what was a beautiful sunset here in the bay area's the sun has set into the ocean. you can see a couple high clouds up above, but otherwise mostly clear skies around the bay area. but the temperatures really pop today quite a bit. in fact, all around the bay area. we saw some very nice weather shaping up some temperatures sneaking up into the 70's in places like concord, 73 degrees in santa rosa. how about that? just a taste of things to come our way. i think as we start to look toward the weekend, as can see, a lot of sunshine and a real springfield to it here in the bay area. good news is we are drying things out around the state after a very stormy start. the 1st half of the month. couple high clouds drifting over the top of that ridge of high pressure. otherwise a pretty calm conditions around much of the state. here's where we sit right now. you see those high clouds drenched across parts is the worst of it. no t that raindrops to speak of. we've got more sunshine on the way

and some warmer temperatures to. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. let's look forward to that. thank you, lawrence. the oakland firefighters union says in apartment fire. >> last night is the perfect example of why fire stations shouldn't be closing in the city. last night's fire started shortly after 9 o'clock at 55 macarthur, the apartment fire there is about a 2 minute drive from fire station 10. unfortunately, that station has been closed since november of 2022. for renovations. it's still closed as a result. firefighters from another station had to come about a five-minute drive away. the firefighters union says when it comes to response times every minute is critical. >> every time someone calls 9, 1, because they need help right away. a fire doubles in size every 60 seconds. and this apartment fire could have been kept to something on the stove or something inside of one room. but instead it was total loss for this one apartment and spread to

adjacent apartments. luckily crews able to get there soon as they, you know, says they could and fought the fire rest of leave it to stop it from with the city's budget deficit being what it is, there's no word if for wind station 10 will reopen. >> at the beginning of the year, the city closed stations. 25 28 in the oakland hills because of the budget crisis for more stations are set to close later this month. however, council members say they found additional revenue which they hope will prevent the closure of those 4 additional stations. >> alameda county superior court workers are striking for a second day in a row over what they're calling unfair labor practices court management says that the county is overstaffed by nearly 100 people but a union analysis that shows that alameda county lags behind similar jurisdictions in san francisco in la in a statement to kron 4 news, the court

says, quote, although the union claims it's concerned about public safety, he's refused. the courts repeated efforts to mediate these matters before neutral mediators and has instead chosen to critically endangered the public's access to justice by choosing to strike, unquote as the strike continues, it could halt trials and delay hearings in alameda county. schools have been given an ultimatum by the trump administration, get rid of programs that promote diversity, equity and inclusion, also known as dei or risk losing federal funding kron four's rob nesbitt reports now from the notice from the department of education. >> schools k through 12 colleges and universities have been given 2 weeks to get rid of their diversity initiatives. >> programs put in place to help diversify a student body are viewed as discrimination by the white house, ending diversity, equity and inclusion is a precondition of receiving federal funds. the

white house is threatening to withhold federal funds to schools that promote dei. this letter sent out by the department of education gives k through 12 schools 2 weeks to end race-based admissions, hiring scholarships or graduation ceremonies. vallejo superintendent ruben are yellow, says his district is one of the most diverse in the country. and federal funds are mostly used for students most in need. when we get funding like title one dollars this time, one dollars or really earmarked for students who need additional support. >> regardless of race, it's typically tied your socioeconomic status. you're language proficiency status or if you're foster youth who are homeless colleges and universities are also scrambling to evaluate their risk when it comes to dei programs. the notice from the white house says schools have discriminated against students on the basis of race, including white and asian students. >> february is also black history month. president trump hosted an event at the white house thursday. black history meet real mccain with a legal defense fund says the president is contradicting

district will make nearly 13 million dollars in budget cuts and layoffs. staff. the decision was part of the board's effort to address 36 million dollar budget deficit over the next 2 years. >> it is traumatic. no one wants their child to have to go to this. we know we have to put a lot of things in place to continue to serve, hold our families and support them through that through this transition. in the end, it's their baby right? it's their child who gets dropped off at a school and they want to make sure that their child feel safe at school is going to be well taken care of and educated. and that's ultimate goal. >> the >> superintendent says the district staff is reaching out to families affected to help them with the transition to a new school. >> the country will vote. controversial vote is forcing 3 saint rose elementary schools to close brooke hill elementary. >> albertville elementary will close in june and steele lane elementary will close in june of the following year. but the

future of the other schools is on hold. the school board ended up running out of time and had in the meeting at 11 30 last night. so there's still no decision. if the district will shut down. montgomery or elsie allen high schools. >> lot of anxiety. a lot of frustration lot of mixed emotions, of course, that there's a lot of uncertainty. and so that crashes mail. but there's a lot of just uneasiness of what's next. you know, we don't know what's next for any of us. and so it's just more of a waiting game, especially after the decisions last night. >> the district is facing a 20 million dollar deficit forcing them to make tough, decisions that obviously impact people. the board is also considering laying off employees. still ahead on kron, 4 news at 6 former house speaker nancy pelosi host roundtable discussion. >> calling out the republican budget plan. she claims it's only helping the rich. >> and after the break, local

>> pelosi heard from a variety of service providers that distribute those services and from parents who use those services vital nutrition programs that are part of the farm bill under threat. >> if the program is cut, tens of thousands of san franciscans people from marin county could be impacted when you have children with special health needs and disabilities. medicaid is your lifeline. it keeps your children connected. these proposed cuts are a death sentence community over 50% of the babies born in california are born via medicaid. pelosi says few know about the proposed cuts to medicaid and food programs. >> because of distractions coming from the trump white house. she says even the president's call for the end of the presidio is a distraction. >> take a look after the perceived a look after the federal building. a look after all of that. that's important. this is urgent and don't let anything they're doing out there. but there shiny objects

start out the day with some patchy fog early on, but not much. and then to make sure some sunshine and some clouds, temperatures, maybe just a tad cooler by tomorrow afternoon. this weekend, though, partly cloudy, but warm temperatures. lot of 70's breaking out around the bay area. a little spring fever, too. numbers out the door right now. you're still looking 62 in palo alto, 60 in san jose. currently 63 degrees lael 60 for our friends in petaluma and 62 degrees in santa rosa overall. yet we dry things out around the state. now, that's a good thing. just a few high clouds passing overhead. so traveling around the state much easier this week off the coastline, high pressure building in, you've got pretty good system out there right now, but it's going to fall the jet stream that's going to take it all the way up in the pacific northwest. so that is good news she's stepping out the door tonight. do plan to be little cool in spots as temperatures dropping off under mostly clear skies as we head toward 9 o'clock. tonight, some 40's and 50's outside. but a nice night out there. what a day it was today. how about that just around the bay area. folks are out there enjoying that sunshine. it's like we've been
