tv Presidential Address to Congress KRON March 4, 2025 6:00pm-7:01pm PST
6:01 pm
right, welcome. we're taking a live look right now into the senate chambers in washington, d.c., tonight as lawmakers are getting ready to hear. >> president trump's joint address to congress. good evening, everybody. i'm vicki liviakis and i'm grant lotus. appreciate you being with us. it's president trump's first joint address. >> of his second term the almost 40 plus days of him being in office. there have been mass federal layoffs that we've seen. shocking foreign policy moves like the recent tariffs on next kin. then canadian goods that went into effect today. lots of executive orders like rolling back diversity, equity and inclusion programs and the federal government. we're also just 10 days out from the deadline to avert a government shutdown. so a whole lot to talk about and we understand we are being told that this is going to be. >> a fairly lengthy presentation. it's a speech that could go well, certainly
6:02 pm
more than an hour, even up to some 2 and a half hours. the president writing on trees central on monday. tomorrow night will be big. i will tell it like it is. everyone is gathering now anticipating a what is going to to happen. the theme of tonight the renewal of the american dream is what they're calling it. the white house says that the president is expected to lay out his achievements since returning to the white house as well as he's going be appealing to congress to kick in some more money to finance more. some of his aggressive immigration crackdowns. once the president begins his entrance, we will take you to washington live and you will hear his remarks in full. >> what democrats are going to has been a topic of conversation as we see the former house speaker, san francisco zone, nancy pelosi. there some democrats are not attending, obviously pelosi,
6:03 pm
the congresswoman is attending. some have said they will go and sit on their hands. i talked to east bay congressman eric swalwell, world earlier today and he said he's going to go because that's what his constituents elected him to do. it. he said we're not just going to sit there though and get punched in the face of trump says things that we don't like that will be vocal about the opposition and they're going to be kicking things off in a matter of moments. as we see members of congress still >> pouring you know, as as we've heard the president speak before, he will certainly have his speech writers writing things, but he tends to go off script. so, you know, all bets are off there and there is the first lady melania trump walking in to applause. >> william mcfarland, the house sergeant at arms will announce mr. speaker the president of the united states. and once that happens, the president will follow the first lady into the chambers there, a joint session of congress. and you can people
6:04 pm
are standing and applauding. we have the house speaker and the vice president there. and there she is taking her seat. >> so the backdrop against all of this as a certainly a lot going on. polling shows inflation, high prices. still top of mind for most americans who are very concerned about it. there concern perhaps that the administration could be doing more to address that. we're likely to hear a plenty of talk about immigration about the border. >> and it looks like it's about to start right no
6:05 pm
>> all right. to the cabinet members entering their and after the president is finished with his remarks. you have a slotkin the michigan senator who will deliver that democratic response that is expected to be about a 10 minute speech from michigan and we will bring you that live after the president is finished with his remarks. we also will have far political analyst michael yaki here and he will break down what the president said. also what senator slotkin, who is a former member of the cia, new senator from michigan has to say to speak on behalf of the democrats. and of course, seeing some familiar faces there. >> as you see, robert, a >> kennedy junior a walking in their heads. seth behind kennedy. was kristi noem and there is a adam schiff way off there in the corner to the left. so all of this is, of
6:06 pm
course, the big build-up to the entrance of the president, should be happening any moment now. >> the big news of the day obviously the trade unprecedented debt, trade war between the 3 north american powers. also an increase on china tariffs up to 20%. now the biggest trading partners of the u.s. involved in a trade for tonight. president trump is expected to take credit for quotes its swift and unrelenting action reorienting the nation's economy, immigration and foreign policy and see lets the american people know what he's thinking him lets the members of congress know what's on his mind. and certainly we've been hearing a lot about ukraine. it's anticipated that >> the president will be making some remarks about that. certainly keep an eye out for. yeah. how much time the president is talking about and and trying to reduce the
6:07 pm
the federal budget and federal government elon musk who is heading up. those is expected to attend the speech. we hear. so we're also hearing that will possibly be some some fireworks, whatever is to be interpreted you know, the president has a tendency to want to be performative. so we should see some interesting things to come of this. >> from the bay area to washington. elon musk is expected to be in attendance as we see rfk junior there. the secretary of health and human services. and it's going to be interesting to see what congress members do in response to what the president says. certainly republicans in the house and senate. have not pushed back much at all. >> in terms of, you know, their opposition to the president, if they believe that he's doing something that
6:08 pm
is not benefiting their constituents are the american people. you hear that mostly from sources and privately, republicans thus far have been hesitant if not on willing to go against the president publicly. i to other topics that might come up. >> maybe the gulf of america may be buying are negotiating to get greenland for national security. also retaking the panama some of the things that we've been hearing and and certainly one that is really stuck in the craw of our neighbor to the north and making canada the 51st state trudeau as governor trudeau. >> earlier. yeah, you know, so it's become very contentious. with the trade war that is now underway. >> and there's no indication that canada is set to become the 51st state. so we can set that aside and focus on the trade war. one other issue
6:09 pm
that that figures to come up is the issue with israel and hamas and the administration's support of israel. they've doubled down on that in the same week that they have halted a to ukraine. >> now we haven't seen this the shot there yet. but the democratic women's caucus, they're expected to be wearing pink out there in protest. if you remember, i'm past years, they were white honor. the suffragettes. so we haven't seen that shot. get that likely once things begin will be able to get view of that. >> our political analyst michael yaki is with us. still be with us after the president speaks to discuss it. what we've heard, he'll provide his analysis and then we'll head to michigan where senator alyssa slotkin will be delivering the democratic response. it's really a time when democrats are trying to find their way as they look for what their message is, what to push back against what
6:10 pm
to kind you know, not push back against and it'll be interesting to see how the democratic members of the house and senate protest if they do in the chamber there and also what the greater democratic messages from senators lockett. >> yeah, you'd likely we have an idea what we're going to be hearing about from the president some of the things we probably will not hear health care, obamacare. no solution for that other. the cutbacks medicaid to some of the >> social services, the safety net for americans. the other thing that will not be brought up likely is abortion. that was certainly trump's achilles heel on the campaign trail. the democrats, of course, making that kind of a cornerstone of their policies. >> and it's going to be especially interesting to see what the american people make of this. if they're tuning in and if they are, what issues
6:11 pm
matter to that during the economy during the election, it was the economy. >> that a lot of people and according to polling had as their number one issue, they want a cheaper gas, cheaper groceries. they wanted to be able to afford their lives more and they thought president trump was the avenue to take them in that direction. prices by and large have not gone down it at least not noticeably. and with the tariffs imposed in the trade war that follows all economists say that prices on goods that americans pay for are set to go up. so it'll be interesting to see what the reaction is from the american people yeah, i mean, polling party indicates that inflation in high prices are still really top of mind for americans as they try to put food on their table. >> i mean, all you have to do is go to the grocery store and see that the price of eggs have not come you know, lot of folks also think that the administration could certainly be doing a lot more to address
6:12 pm
some of these concerns. it's yet to be seen if the president will address that. >> commerce secretary, sorry, howard lutnick of representing the administration said regarding the tariffs and the trade war in north america, he was on fox today. >> and he indicated that there could be a quick to these tariffs and trade war he said it's not going to be a pause. none of the pause stuff. but i think he's going to figure out talking about trudeau, the leader of canada, that the more you do you can meet somewhere in the middle. >> and so he says we think we're going to be announcing something tomorrow regarding that. so that'll be fascinating because i think a lot of americans right now they're aware of the, you know, drama in the white house friday with president zelensky
6:13 pm
and the u.s. situation as it relates to ukraine and russia. but i think people care about is their pocketbooks and bank account. absolutely. and as we are anticipating a >> president trump coming out, he was supposed to be out some 10 minutes ago. so apparently things are are running behind here to help us kinda wade our way through this. michael yaki here again. michael, thanks for. absolutely joining us do you have any idea what's going on here? >> i think that he's doing the. typical hollywood thing, which is waiting a little bit building the anticipation getting everyone talking and then. he'll show up. i mean, fashionably late as the fashionably late in. this is this is so we were they anticipated him when he would begin speaking till 6 between 6, 10 6.20. so and to that extent, he's pretty much mister president of the united states.
6:19 pm
6:20 pm
members of the united states congress. thank you very much. and to my fellow citizens, america is back. 6 weeks ago. i stood beneath the dome of this capital and proclaimed the dawn of the golden age of america. from that moment on it has been nothing but swift and unrelenting action to usher in the greatest and most successful era. in the history
6:21 pm
of our country. we have accomplished more in 43 days than most administrations accomplished in 4 years or 8 years. and we are just getting started. i returned to this chamber tonight to report that america's momentum is back. our spirit is back. upright is back. our confidence is back and the american dream is surging, bigger and better ever before. the american dream is unstoppable in our country is on the verge of a
6:22 pm
comeback. the likes of which the world has never witnessed and perhaps we'll never witness again. been anything like it. and president joe, the election of november. 5th was a mandate like has not been seen in many decades. we want all 7 swing states giving us electoral college victory. we the popular vote by big numbers and juan counties.
6:23 pm
6:24 pm
>> business optimism. so its single largest one-month gain. >> every court a 41 point job. >> id to hold and maintain decorum in the house and to cease any further disruptions. that's your morning. it will cool and continue. a breach of decorum in the chair is prepared to direct the sergeant at arms to restore order to the joint session.
6:25 pm
6:26 pm
directed to uphold and maintain decorum in the house. this president continues. thank you. >> over the past 6 weeks, i have signed nearly 100 executive orders and taking more than 400 executive actions or record. to restore common sense safety optimism and wealth all across our wonderful land. the people elected me to do the job and i'm doing it. in fact, it has been stated by many. that the first month of our presidency, it's our presidents. is the most successful in the history of our nation.
6:27 pm
>> makes it even more impressive. is that? >> you know, number 2 george washington. how about that? but we'll take it. within hours of taking the oath of office. i declared a national emergency on our southern border. >> and i deployed the u.s. military and border patrol to repass. >> the invasion of our country. and what the job they've done as a result, illegal border crossings last month were by far the lowest ever recorded ever. they chose
6:28 pm
not to come much easier that way. comparison under joe biden, the worst president in american history. >> thousands of illegal crossings so much. >> and virtually all of them, including murderers, drug dealers, gang members and people from mental institutions and insane asylums released into our country. who would want to do that? this is my 5th such speech to congress. and once again, i look at the democrats in front of the and i realize there is absolutely nothing i can say to make them happy. we're to make them stand or smile or applaud. nothing i can do. i could find a cure to the most devastating disease, a disease that would wipe out
6:29 pm
entire nations announced the answers to the greatest economy in history. or the stoppage of crime to the lowest levels ever recorded. and these people city right here. well, not clap will not stand and certainly will not cheer for these astronomical achievements. they won't do it no matter 5, 5 times i've been a it's very said. >> and it just shouldn't this way. >> so democrats sitting before me. for just this one night. why not join us in celebrating so many incredible winds for america. for the good of our
6:30 pm
nation. let's work together. let's truly make america great again. every day my administration is fighting to deliver the. change america needs to bring a future that america deserves. and we're doing it. this is a time for big dreams and bold action. upon taking office. i imposed an immediate freeze on all federal hiring a freeze on all new federal regulations and a freeze on all. >> foreign aid. >> it's the ridiculous green
6:31 pm
new scam. i withdrew from the unfair paris climate accord which was causing trillions of dollars. >> the countries were not paid. i withdrew from the corrupt world health organization. also withdrew from the anti american un human rights council. restrictions that were making our country far less safe and totally unaffordable. and importantly, we ended the last administration's insane electric vehicle monday, saving our auto workers and companies from making. and
6:32 pm
jacko our economy. i have directed that for every one new regulation, 10 old regulations must be eliminated. >> a successful >> we set records on ending unnecessary rules and regulations like no other president had done before. we ordered all federal workers to return to the offers. they will either show up for work in person or be removed from their job. a nice government where as an example, a sitting

whether you are a doctor and account and a lawyer or air traffic controller. you should be hired and promoted based on skill and competence, not race or gender. they still merit and the supreme court it a brave very powerful decision has allowed us to do so. thank you. thank you. the poison of critical race theory from our public schools. and i signed an order making it the official policy of the united states government that there are only 2 genders, male. also
6:36 pm
signed an executive order to ban men from playing in women's. ago. payton mcmahon was an all-star high school athlete, one of the best preparing for a future in college sports. but when her girls volleyball match was invaded by a male, he smashed the ball so hard. peyton space causing traumatic brain injury. partially paralyzing the right side. and ending her athletic career. it was. a shot like she's never seen before. she's never seen anything like it. payton is here tonight in the gallery
6:37 pm
and payton from now on schools will kick the man off the girls team or they will lose all federal funding. and if you really want to see numbers, just take a look at what happened in the woman's boxing weightlifting track and field swimming or cycling a male recently finished a long-distance race 5 hours and 14 minutes ahead of a woman for a new record by 5 hours broke the record by 5 hours. it's demeaning for women and
6:38 pm
it's very bad for our country. we're not going to put up with it any longer. what just described is only a small fraction of the common sense revolution that is now because of us sweeping the entire world. common sense has become a common theme and we will never go back. never have let that happen. all right. very highest priorities is to rescue our economy and get dramatic and immediate relief to working families. as you know, we inherited from the last administration and economic catastrophe and inflation nightmare. their
6:39 pm
policies drove up. energy prices pushed up grocery costs and drove the necessities of life out of reach for millions. and millions of americans. it never had anything like it. we suffered the worst inflation in 48 years, but perhaps even in the history of our country, they're not sure as president. i'm fighting every day to reverses damage in make america affordable again. especially let the price get out of control. prices out of control. and we're working on to get it back down. secretary, do a good job and that you inherited a total mess from the previous administration. do a good j.
6:40 pm
if you focus of our fight to defeat inflation is rapidly reducing the cost of energy. the previous administration cut the number of new oil and gas leases bite. 95% slowed pipeline construction to a halt and close more than 100 power plants. we're opening up many of those power plants right? like it. that's why and my first day in office i declared a national energy emergency. me say many times we have more liquid gold under our feet than any nation on
6:41 pm
earth. and by far and now i fully authorized the most talented team ever assembled going get it. it's called drill, baby, drill. administration is also working on a gigantic natural gas pipeline in alaska. among the largest in the world where japan, south korea and other nations want to be our partner with investments of trillions of dollars. each been anything like that. one. it will be truly spectacular. it's all set to go. the permitting is gotten. and later this week, i also take historic action to dramatically expand production of critical minerals and rare earths here in the usa. if or

6:46 pm
for improving learning outcomes in asia. asia is doing very well with learning. we know what we're doing should use it ourselves. now 101 million dollars with contracts at the department. of education. the most ever paid. nothing even like it under the trump administration. all of these scams and they're far worse. but i didn't think it was appropriate to talk about them. this so bad. many more have been found out and exposed and swiftly terminated by a group of very intelligent, mostly young people. headed up by elon and we appreciate it. we found hundreds billions of dollars.
6:47 pm
>> and we do start get to fight inflation and other things. >> taking back a lot of that money we got to just in time. >> this is just the beginning. >> the government accountability office, federal government office has estimated annual fraud of over 500 billion dollars in our nation. and we are working very hard to stop it. we're going to. we're also identifying shocking levels of incompetence and probable fraud. indy social security program for seniors and that are seen use. and people that we love rely on. believe it or not, government databases list. 4.7 million social security members. from people aged 100 to 109 years old. it lists. >> 3.6 million people from

ages 110. >> the 119. i don't know any of the miners. some people that rather elderly, but not quite that elderly. >> 3.4, 7 million people from ages 120 to 129. 3.9 million people from ages 130 to 100. and 39. 3.5 million people from ages 140 to 140 of and money is being paid to many of them. and we're searching right now. you're going to find it. but a lot of money is paid out to people. >> because it just keeps getting paid and paid and nobody does. it really hurts. social security and hurts our country. 1.3 million people from ages. 150 to 159 and
6:49 pm
over. >> 130,000 people, according to the social security databases, our age over 160 years old. >> we have a healthier country that i thought about the. including. to finish 1039 people between the ages of 22229, one person between the age of 240 in 249 1 person is listed at 360 years of age. more than 100 years. colder than our country. we're going
6:50 pm
find out where that money's going. and it's not going to be pretty by slashing all of the fraud, waste and theft. we can find we will defeat inflation, bring down mortgage rates, lower car payments grocery prices, protect our seniors and put more money in the pockets of american families. and today interest rates took a beautiful drop. big, beautiful job spent time. and near future. i want to do what has not been done in 24 years. balance the federal budget. with that goal in
6:51 pm
mind, we have developed in great detail what we're calling the gold card, goes on sale very, very soon for 5 million dollars. we will allow the most successful job creating peoplo from all over the world to buy a path to u.s. citizenship. it's like the green card, but >> bett r and more sophisticated. and these people will have to pay tax in our country. they won't have to pay tax from where they came. the money that they've made. you wouldn't want to do that. but they have to pay tax, create jobs. they'll also be taking people out of college isn't paying for them so that we can keep them in our country instead of having the beef being forced out. number one at the top school as an example being 4, 7, not
6:52 pm
being allowed to stay and create tremendous numbers of jobs and great success for. a company out there. so while we take out the criminals, killers, traffickers and child predators who are allowed to enter our country the open border policy of these people, the democrats, the biden administration, the open border, insane policies that you've allowed to destroy our country. we will now bring in brilliant, hard work in job, creating people. they get up and a lot of money and we get to reduce our debt with that money. given us a mandate for bold and profound change for nearly 100 years, the federal bureaucracy has grown until it
6:53 pm
has crushed to freedom's ballooned, our deficits and held back america's potential in every possible way. the nation founded by pioneers and risk-takers now drowns and are millions and millions of pages of regulations and debt approvals. that should take 10 days to get instead take 10 years, 15 years. and even 20 years before you're rejected. >> meanwhile, we have hundreds of thousands of federal workers who of not been showing up to work. my administration will reclaim power from this unaccountable bureaucracy and we will restore to democracy to america again. a friend who resist this change will be removed from office immediately. it's very simple.
6:54 pm
and the days of rule by unelected bureaucrats over. and the next phase of our plan to deliver the greatest economy in history is for this. congress to pass tax cuts for everybody there in there. they're waiting you to vote. and i'm sure that the people my right. i don't mean the republican right, i write great here. i'm sure you get a vote for those tax cuts because otherwise i do believe the people will ever vote you into office and doing a big favor by telling you that. this group is going to be
6:55 pm
voting for the attack. we had tremendous success enough or within a very big part of a plan. we're seeking permanent income tax cuts all across the board and to get urgent. lee needed relief to americans hit especially hard by inflation. i'm calling for no tax on tips. no tax overtime and no tax on social security benefits. >> i also inches payments on
6:56 pm
car loans, tax deductible. but only if the car is made it a match. >> and by the way, we're going growth in the auto industry like nobody's ever seen. plants are opening up all over the place. bills are being made. >> dennison. that's a combination of the election when and tariffs. it's a beautiful word. his net. along with the other policies will allow our auto a dishy to absolutely boom. it's gonna boom. spoke to the majors today. will 3 the top people in this so excited. in fact, already numerous car companies have announced that they will be building massive automobile plants in america with honda just announcing a new plant in indiana. >> one of the largest anywhere in the world. and this has
6:57 pm
taken place since our. >> great victory on november 5th, a date which will hopefully go down as one of the most important in the history of our country. >> in addition as part of our tax cuts, we want to cut taxes on domestic production and all manufacturing. and just as we did before, we will provide 100% expensing. it will be retroactive to january 2020. 25 and it was one of the main reasons why are tax cuts? we're so successful in our first term giving the most successful economy in the history of our country first we had a great first step.
6:58 pm
don't make your product in america. however, under the trump administration, you'll pay a tariff and in some cases, a rather large run. other countries have used tariffs against us for decades. and now it's our turn to start using them against those other countries. on average, the european union. >> china, brazil, india. mexico and canada. have you heard of them? and countless other nations charges tremendously higher tariffs. >> then we charge them. it's very unfair. india charges as auto tariffs higher than 100%. china's average tariff on our products is twice what we charge them. and south korea's average tariff is 4 times higher. think of that 4 times higher. and we give so much help militarily and in so many other ways to south korea. but that's what happens. this is
6:59 pm
happening by friend and foe. this system is not fair to the united states and never was. and so on april 2nd. i wanted to make it april 1st. but it didn't. want to be accused of april fool's day. that's what that's not just one day was precious. a lot of money. but we're going to do it in a very superstitious person. april second, reciprocal tariffs kick in and whatever they terrify us. other countries, we will. care of them that reciprocal back and forth. >> to keep us out of their market, then we will do not monetary barriers to keep them out of our market. >> it's a lot of that, too. they don't even allow us in the market. we will take in
7:00 pm
trillions and trillions of dollars create jobs like we have never seen before. i did it with china and i did it with others. and the biden administration couldn't do anything about it because it was so much money. they couldn't do anything about it. we have been ripped off for decades by nearly every country on earth. and we will not let that happen any longer. over the last 3 months about mexico and canada. but we have very large deficits with both of them. but even more importantly, they've allowed fentanyl to come into our country at levels never seen before killing hundreds of thousands of our citizens and many very young, beautiful people destroying families. nobody's ever seen anything like it. they are in
